Dedicated Servers For Homefront

Dedicated servers are often a popular topic amongst the multiplayer lovers.

The good news is that one of THQ's most promising titles of 2011 will indeed boast dedicated servers; not only for the PC, but for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well. And if you're wondering just how important the dedicated server really is, check out what Homefront senior designer Brian Holinka, from developer Kaos Studios, had to tell Joystiq:

"You have to think about your constraints when you're making a game. If we host a server on a console, all of a sudden, that console is both server and it's playing the game. That really lowers everything: player count, the number of vehicles, everything. Dedicated servers allow us to offload all that work and basically all the client has to worry about is running the game."

The game supports 32 players online and every player on the field can summon a vehicle whenever they desire. In short, the dedicated servers mean that the size and scope of the online multiplayer experience will be much bigger. Added Holinka:

"It means everything is bigger -- there's more players, more vehicles, more targets, more airstrikes. It really helps us offload a lot of work, and now our scope is a lot bigger."

The team did test out combat arenas where even more players were online at once, but they found that with 50 or 60 people in a battle, "every time you turn around, you'd get shot." So in other words, it just wasn't much fun. Yeah, we remember that happening in the 60-player Resistance 2 multiplayer; it could be frustrating, even though it was pretty damn amazing at the time.

We're just hoping Homefront will be a surprise hit for many.

I've been talking about this game all week. Hadn't even heard of it until then. It looks like a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to seeing what kinda scores it pulls in on release. I'm all for designated servers, just don't understand why Black Ops doesn't have them. If Homefront pulls in some decent scores, I reckon I'll be picking it up.

It costs moneys to run dedicated servers, and Activision won't spend it for their fans.

Lol, that 60 player stuff in Resistance 2 was fun as a shooting gallery if you don't mind getting cut down all the time.

I don't have any personal interest in military shooters, but I'm kind of rooting for this game as THQ NEEDS a blockbuster series and anything that threatens CoD is good in my book.

Yep> I'm all for the underdog when it comes to CoD. I had high hopes for MoH and I was slightly dissapointed. I might pick this one up but I don't know. My wallet is still recovering from Christmas.

Oh man... I just don't like vehicles in my mp fps matches. I think I got this aversion from too much Warhawk because it wasn't too bad in Bad Company.

THQ giving the DLC first to xbox make the game a bargain 20 dollar game.

This is why I will never understand people's love for COD multiplayer. No dedicated servers is terrible, not only is there less of everything, some people have terrible internet connections which can really hamper your game.

Practically *every* multiplayer game based on matches (non-persistent worlds) are player-hosted. That is why there is no monthly fee: There is nothing to charge for.

The good thing about player hosted games is that the game will live as long as people are playing it. No continuous support by the publisher is required, so noone is there to pull the plug as soon as the game no longer give the required profit.

I'd just like to add that I'm now talking about ps3 games of course. In the pc world the players themselves can set up dedicated servers for others to play on, but the basic principle remains the same - it's all in the hands of the players.

Thank you, the only games I can reliably play online on are ones with servers. Then again all I ever need to play online are KZ2, R2 and Demon's Souls

I'm picking this game up D1 because I wanna support devs who are in direct competition with COD. I think that's the problem with COD. There is nobody to push them to innovate.

see, this is exactly why i love THQ.
they dont do things for the sake of doing them, they do it properly!
not such a hard thing to do, but it gives players a much better experience.
only wish developers would follow suit!
