Dedicated Servers For Homefront
Dedicated servers are often a popular topic amongst the multiplayer lovers.
The good news is that one of THQ's most promising titles of 2011 will indeed boast dedicated servers; not only for the PC, but for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well. And if you're wondering just how important the dedicated server really is, check out what Homefront senior designer Brian Holinka, from developer Kaos Studios, had to tell Joystiq:
"You have to think about your constraints when you're making a game. If we host a server on a console, all of a sudden, that console is both server and it's playing the game. That really lowers everything: player count, the number of vehicles, everything. Dedicated servers allow us to offload all that work and basically all the client has to worry about is running the game."
The game supports 32 players online and every player on the field can summon a vehicle whenever they desire. In short, the dedicated servers mean that the size and scope of the online multiplayer experience will be much bigger. Added Holinka:
"It means everything is bigger -- there's more players, more vehicles, more targets, more airstrikes. It really helps us offload a lot of work, and now our scope is a lot bigger."
The team did test out combat arenas where even more players were online at once, but they found that with 50 or 60 people in a battle, "every time you turn around, you'd get shot." So in other words, it just wasn't much fun. Yeah, we remember that happening in the 60-player Resistance 2 multiplayer; it could be frustrating, even though it was pretty damn amazing at the time.
We're just hoping Homefront will be a surprise hit for many.

I don't have any personal interest in military shooters, but I'm kind of rooting for this game as THQ NEEDS a blockbuster series and anything that threatens CoD is good in my book.

The good thing about player hosted games is that the game will live as long as people are playing it. No continuous support by the publisher is required, so noone is there to pull the plug as soon as the game no longer give the required profit.
