PSXE Poll Update: Fans Want FFXIII-2, But Desire Changes

For the record, we started the past week's poll before Final Fantasy XIII-2 became official. We're clairvoyant and stuff.

At any rate, it's no surprise that while the majority appear to be interested in the sequel, most say Square-Enix had best make some changes. FFXIII has its fair share of detractors and even those who defend it on a routine basis (like yours truly), even those people acknowledge that S-E didn't deliver the series installment we all desired. In looking back, the only other true sequel in the franchise was FFX-2, which did boast a departure from the gameplay and structure found in FFX. Some liked it, some didn't. Personally, I was a big fan of the class system because it reminded me a lot of Final Fantasy Tactics, but others didn't like the female emphasis. Either way, FFXIII-2 is going to have to reclaim some lost fans and perhaps the best way to do that is to create a full-on, true-blue role-playing game. Of course, there's no guarantee; we might end up with something that feels more like Kingdom Hearts.

This week, we ask about the game that has been a good 13 years in the making: how psyched are you for Duke Nukem Forever? With a release date supposedly solidified, we just have to wonder if enough gamers are still interested. Duke Nukem is quite the archaic name by today's standards; most people under the age of 20 haven't even heard of him. Therefore, we're thinking maybe it's too late... But then again, isn't the Duke's swagger timeless?

Why must you always stereotype the Under 20's Ben? :P I'm 18, but I've heard of, and love a lot of the classics you talk about, and I'm 18.
However, honestly I would MUCH rather see Versus XIII release before this. Versus has been put on hold long enough, and I really don't like waiting for them to put out the extra content of FF13 they pass off as a sequel, while getting away with charging an extra $60+ for it. Nomura needs to step up and get into gear, I've been waiting on Versus and KH3 long enough, and if 13-2 is as much of a let down as the original was, than I will lose SO much more faith in SE. The only thing they have holding me to them anymore is Versus, and KH3.

I have the same sentiments here, Riku994. I really want more details on Versus XIII as it's been announced way back 2006 yet we hardly know anything about it. I would admit that FF XIII is still a good game, but it's still my least favourite of all Final Fantasy games I've played.

Well hey at least we got a nice 7 min piece of footage to look at containing gameplay, cutscenes, and actual Japanese dialog.

Can you actually believe it...from 2006 we only got about...

2006 E3 Trailer (Noctis has swords)
2007 CLOUD Trailer (Noctis has skills)
2008 DK∑3713 Trailer (Noctis has friends)
2009 FFVIIACC Trailer (Noctis has Stella)
2010 TGS 2010 Trailer (Noctis has a game!)
2011 Theater Trailer (Noctis has a voice!)

Only 6 pieces of material...amazing. The game has been in development since 2003. Jeese I really hope it turns out to be excellent for an Action RPG and as a game.

Otherwise I'd feel sorry for Nomura san...as for Wada kun not that much.

It's not stereotyping to say that most people under the age of 20 haven't heard of Duke Nukem.

It's just a matter of age and time.

Thanks for the insight LV ;P, shadow, it seems that every year we get one more small detail...That leaves what, 7 years before a release date?
I'm guessing late 2012 or early 2013 for a NA release.

Yeah, it's not really a stereotype beyond the fact that it is a generalization. However, it is true enough that it is not a mere stereotype. There are exceptions to the rule, of course, such as yourself. However, the issues often mentioned here about the under 20 crowd are most certainly true. And I am reminded of that fact every day at work! (Work at a Youth centre)

In fact, as I write this from my office, I can hear in the background a mass slaying of zombies in Black Ops. It's their game of choice. ^.^

P.s. I just went out to ask them if they've ever heard of Duke Nukem. Of the 7 gamers out there, it's a resounding "nope". Oldest one is 18, youngest is 16.

Best thing to do is just hope they listen to fans and add in all the good RPG stuff that was stripped out of XIII. I'm willing to grant SE one single solitary Mulligan in the FF series, but that's it, no more.

I hadda vote yes on the Duke, but not Day 1. It might have been a day one... 10 years ago, but now I got to wait and see if Gearbox has what it takes to make the Duke reign again.

I don't have any ultimatums for S-E. While there's a number of things I could've preferred in Final Fantasy XIII. It was still well worth my time and it delivered in many of the most meaningful ways--for my interests. Basically, they're not treading on thin ice with me. I love their art design, their amazing music (I often study while listening to the FFXIII soundtrack) and the grand scale and magnificence of their projects. And importantly, I just enjoying playing games that are thematically oriented in the FF universe.

FFXIII-2 is going to be more of the same. I don't see them changing it drastically in such a short period of time.

I am curious as to what they're going to do with the characters in XIII-2. Will it just be some side story about Lightning or are they bringing back some of the others? I guess it'll be laugh either way.

It will be an amazing journey, just like it was in XIII. Knock the gameplay all you want, it offered an interesting world with interesting characters and I enjoyed the 90+hrs I put into it.

Before anyone says it:
"IT'LL LOOK BEST ON PC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I could care less if that Duke nukem game comes out or not.

FFXIII-2 is a waste of money. We should have a Yakuza 4 poll instead.

That's the game we should get more love. Instead of wasing money on FFXIII-2 I'll choose Yakuza. And for my rpg fix I'll get Neptunia, Ar Tonelico 3, and WKC2. And don't forget Demon's Souls "spiritual" sequel Project Dark. I'm covered.

I told my friend, a die-hard FF fan, about this game and he couldn't believe it. He's found something to like about every numbered FF game to date, except for X-2, which he barely made it past the intro movie before he had to turn his PS2 off. He hopes they learned some lessons and make it better, which I'm sure everybody hopes of S-E in general these days...

As for The Duke, I was kind of caught in between the middle two. I'm not sure I'm going to purchase it until I know how good it will be, but I'm still pretty excited to see it. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and picked the more optimistic option.

hopefully we get a revamped combat system, XIII just did not feel like a FF game what so ever!
its nice and all to have gorges graphics, massive boss battles.
but when the combat system is like that, and i dont have villages to explore around thats when you know somethings off.
i wish we could have neir but in a FF budget style.
neir was a pretty sloppy game, brilliant idea but poorly executed.
only reason why i liked it is because to be honest its the only game i have played this gen that i can honestly call a RPG!
made me feel like i was playing a ps1 game all over again!
only if we could have the neir gameplay, neir level design, neir upgrade system, neir combat system rolled into the FF story and FF graphics, scale, budget.
that would make the perfect FF game!

While I totally enjoyed Nier, that gameplay style does support the old ff combat that we're asking for. A great ACTION rpg but it relies more on real time hack slash/dogding skills than any kind of strategy concerning what spell you should use.

not so much the combat system of neir, but the style of it.
i really liked how you could go wherever you wanted, and sometimes would find yourself up against a impossible to defeat enemy at your level.
kinda reminded me of digemon back on the ps1.
just the freedom of the game, thats what all RPGs should be like.
go wherever you want, whenever you want, however you want.
the exploration in neir was by far the best part of it!

I don't think XIII-2 will be like KH. They've got Versus for that. It'll be more like the FFs of old. They must know that they've irked their fanbase, and must make amends for doing so. If that's the case, it'll be good, and everyone here will forgive them, and if it's not, well... that's likely FF and S-E in the crapper.

As for Duke, he'll be awesome, but he's in an FPS, and it'll have to be something special for me to pick it up, ala KZ3. If 3D Realms managed to pull that much off, and Gearbox can apply the requisite polish, it'll be fantastic, but I'll most certainly be waiting to see some reviews and whatnot.
Peace.

I like turn-based gameplay, but that gameplay just feels and looks too "ancient" to be in games nowadays, just like how random encounters are. Then again, going fast paced like FFvsXIII feels like it's straying too much from what we loved. FFXII is actually a good balance I think.

So exactly what type of gameplay would you guys want for this game?

*edit
About Duke Nukem, it was all too sudden for me. They literally announced the game out of thin air. I've never played any of its games, nor do I have any idea why it's worth all the attention. I have heard the name a lot, but that's about it. From what I've read recently though, it won't be in my collection of games.

I agree. I'm on board either way, but I hope that they don't go back to a slower turn-based style. I have a library of RPGs like that. FF13's battle sysetm was near perfect. Keep it fast-paced, just allow more customization.

Duke Nukem is a day one purchase for me. Even if it only has just a small inkling of the fun Duke Nukem 3D had, then it will be well worth it.

As for FFXIII-2, I'll most likely pick it up as well, just down the road a little. Just as I did with FFX-2. I enjoyed that one, and I'm sure I'll probably like this one as well. Assuming it doesn't turn into a hack n' slash.

There is no way Duke gets a day 1 purchase from me. I need to hear how it is. Any game that takes 13 years to make has gone through massive changes many times. Engine changes, employee and god knows what else. On the flip side it's Duke, nuff said. Gearbox, I am predicting will make this game great. Probably better than Broussard/3D Realms would have. Waiting 13 years for Duke to make an appearance makes me feel bad or sorry for him. Why wait 13 years to come out and then choose the most difficult year in gaming to make an appearance!!! Well, at least for the PS3 sales that is. Oh well, if the reviews spew 9 and 9.5 it will probably change everyone's mind and curiosity will reign supreme. I personally hope it gets a 10 because I love the Duke Nukem universe.

Wish the poll had an option for not caring. Chose wait and see instead. This game isn't even on my radar and probably never will be.

No plans on picking this up.

I find the idea of a FF XIII based on Gran Pulse pretty good, Had the original limited the Cocoon part and gave more time to the Pulse part I'm sure the game wouldn't have gained that much criticism... I'm hoping for a few tweaks in the battle system, and a good story, given the setting, I don't think the sequel needs much more.

As for the Duke, I played it a lot during college, I was even anticipating it... 11 years ago... now It's a wait and see for me... I thought the graphics in the trailer were... well not really good... and the vehicles sections they showed seemed to be taken from a hot wheels game or something...
