KZ3 Retro Map Pack Delivers Two KZ2 Multiplayer Maps

These days, developers just love to talk about downloadable content as early as humanly possible. Well, we don't mind.

Killzone 3 won't be out until February 22, but Guerrilla Games has announced the Retro Map Pack, which will include two multiplayer maps we first saw in Killzone 2. Both Salamun Market and Blood Gracht will let you play KZ2 maps with the upgraded KZ3 goodness, and these will also be available via the PSN. We don't have a release date or a price just yet, but we imagine they'll arrive soon after the game launches. One of the maps will boast a few changes, though: Salamun Market has been "rebalanced for maximum carnage" and will be playable in Warzone mode, while Blood Gracht, the "fan-favorite" from KZ2, is basically the same. You'll be able to play the latter in KZ3's Guerrilla Warfare mode. If you want to test out the multiplayer ahead of time, feel free; the public demo is up now, and you're more than welcome to join in on the fun. Plus, the single-player demo will arrive on February 15.

Wow, all this playing the game before it actually releases stuff is a little overwhelming. I still remember when if you saw a screenshot ahead of time, you thought you hit behind-the-scenes gold.

I think these maps come free with a pre-order from like Amazon or Gamestop.

I believe that as long as you pre-order the game then you get the Retro map pack for free. I know Gamestop, Bestbuy, and Amazon have that going.

IGN done their review (8.5 overall. It scored lower in graphics then both halo reach and MW2, from IGN, ha.), as well as PSLifestyle (10/10). Theirs been a few reviews popping up already.

Crap, it's like KZ3 review explosion out there.
Man, some disappointing scores out there. Gamespot, IGN, and CVG gave it an 8.5
And Joystiq gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

An un-expectant and disappointing response.
Ordinarily high caliber games have a few black sheep reviews, but this one is looking like a majority consensus.
I still look forward to playing it, though. I love good tech showcase titles.

It would seem the only real gripe the harsher critics have is the story. I'm surprised it would get penalized so hard for that when the gameplay and graphics and even sound look superb. I mean, dang, those graphics look incredible, like ultra, holy crap!, incredible.

There is a conspiracy to keep PS3 exclusive scores slightly below 360 exclusive scores for their year end wrapups on the console wars. Not sure how else to explain the best console graphics in an FPS to date getting pooped on. ;)

From the two review I just read (IGN and Gamespot) they're really bashing the story element of the campaign...I think this is one of those things that I'll definitely have to judge on my own

Well what I don't understand is how 1up gave KZ2 a perfect score. In their review of KZ3 say in most ways it's a better game, especially in the MP but give it an 81? where is the justification? I'm so baffled at the way websites are reviewing games. I'm so surprised at the stuff I'm reading about te game.

I havnt played it obviously lol... But with what I'm reading it's a better game as most reviewers are saying than it's predecessor, yet getting lower scores. Idk don't really care cus regardless of scores every reviewer says its a must play. Just strange to me...

I don't like the CVG review either, not because they gave it an 8.5 that's a good score! But because the whole time they can't just talk about KZ3. The first 3 paragraphs or so are one long metaphor about KZ2 being a girl in your life and how you'll marry her... Or something... But something just doesn't click. And now 2 years later she's back into your life as KZ3... Stop it! Just review the damn game! It's kind of funny actually, but not what I came for! Their review is like the girl I'll never take home! Ha how bout that! Or something... ;) Not to mention all te halo references, although mostly in KZ3' favor! Which again makes me wonder how reach got a higher score than KZ3 from them... But whatever!

So it would seem that KZ3 will end up being reviewed like GT5. I really hope this doesn't become a trend. So bets on PSX review score, I am shooting for a 9.6.

Right...Mass Effect 2 received an overall 96 because of one game...Uncharted 2. Yeah ME2 in most cases deserved it, but we really know whats going on here. Sad that reviewers love their 360's so much.

Most of the reviewers analyzed KZ3 poorly. They say what is bad about KZ3, but never explained why. Also, from what I read from some reviews, it sounded like these people did not play the game long enough. I feel like they merely played a few hours of it and reviewed the game through extrapolation. In contrast, Ben and Arnold give thorough analysis of every aspect of a game. Not only do they just say what they like and don't like, but they also explain why with good evidence. The integrity of most reviewers these days are highly questionable, but at least PSXExtreme's has remained intact.

Totally agree...they back it up, but sometimes a 9.9 GT5 socres is questionable as well as GT5 has major flaws even though I loved it and would give it a score between 8.7 and 9. Reviews are usually based on preference and this site is no different, they are just more realistic.

Yes and that's why I only visit this website daily. I only go to other websites to see scores, but then in that case I just go to metacritic, I never actually visit IGN as example.

But what sux is so many people visit other sites and take scores seriously. And I'm not sure yet since I havnt played it, but by reading other reviews it seems like KZ3 should be a 9, by their words alone. Yet some how scoring lower. They are not justifying their score. I mean how can you say "Guerilla has crafted scene after gorgeous scene that made me feel like you're a part of a brutal, human war that is somehow fantastic in setting but also eerily reminiscent of the wars we see on t.v.", yet somehow manage to score it less in graphics than both Reach and MW2. Well obviously 2 different reviewers but that's a major issue I have with websites. Here at PSX we generally get no more than 2 peoples reviews and we particularly know who is reviewing what. It's fair and balanced and keeps this website grounded. Where as a site like IGN who I quoted above is all over the place and you can't get an honest review from that site because if you read the MW2 review and KZ3 review you know they are not by the same person!

Man, I haven't trusted IGN since KZ2 came out. That's when I began to notice this Xbox and PS thing going on. After Snake Eater and San Andreas cameout back in the day...I stopped playing games and forget about console gaming pretty much really. As college took over my life in everyway. I heard GTAIV was coming out so I bought a PS3 since all I know is PS. Then I heard MGS4 was coming out so I was even more excited. Before these actually came out, I started hearing about Gears and such and realized these were Xbox games...and I'm like "what the hell is an Xbox". I then found out a friend had one and this was the first time played a next gen system...back in 07 adn the first game was project gotham (good ass racing game). I got my PS3 in 08, then I found out about these flame wars...lmao, then I realized reviewers are biased as well and the KZ2 article sealed the deal. I mean did anyone read the GOWIII review...terrible. IGN is a terrible website, catered to mass appeal more than anything.

I'm surprised by their choice of maps. I mean, why not remake the most popular map of all time: Radec Academy!

My other pick would be Tharsis Depot, but I guess Blood Gracht is very popular, too.
Both are tied for second most popular, I think.

Forget Radec Academy...whats so special about this map. I hated it because I always felt like I was playing on it. Either it always appears when I'm playing Killzone or a million people are hosting deathmatch in Radec Academy. The two retro maps are perfect, but then again...why just 2? How bout all the maps.

Haha.. .sorry, I wasn't necessarily saying that I thought Radec Academy was the best map.
I was thinking GG should have put that as a retro map, since it's easily the most popular map in all of Killzone 2!

I didn't mind playing on Radec. I personally like Tharsis Depot the best. I didn't mind Corrinth Crossing, either.
Not sure I would've chosen Salamun Market, though...

I loved radec academy... best map in the game, although if you were helghast you were spawn trapped the entire match... they could have added it to the retro pack and maybe opened the academy up more IMO

I'm don't remember what Salamun Market looks like, but if its the big sand storm one...yeah I don't care for it either. I play KZ2 here or there nowadays, but back in 08 and 09, I was on it everyday and I never new the name of any maps except Radec Academy. I loved all of them really, just got tired of RA and I never bought the DLC maps as noone ever had them or used them for matches...lmao, just give us all the maps.

I don't pay $60 for games any more. If I wait until games are on sale for $20, I get 3 games for the price of one. I might have to wait, but I get the same experience for a lot less money.

Also, it's likely that KZ3 will have a lot of dlc that won't be free no matter what you do, so I might as well hold out until I can get the best deal available.

I have the patience to wait, so I might as well save the money.

When they first announced this map pack, they said it was going to have two of the most popular maps. So I figured Radec Academy was going to be in there. I'm sure glad that's not the way it turned out!

I'm not shooting myself in the foot with the KZ series again. Pre-ordering at $58 just to get two old maps? No. I think I'll wait and see if they've fixed the things I hated about the second before forking over this kind of money.

Yup. it's gonna be like this all year for Sony exclusive titles. The 3-shitty have like 2 exclusives.. i think? Gears of bore and Borza. gears will get a 10 cause of the addition of a shotgun and Borza will get a 10 for having all 180 cars with interior views.

No not really because GT5 is a mixed bag honestly. I love GT5 and have played it for endless hours, but this has one big flaw I can't get the pass. The premium standard crap doesn't bug me at all. What bugs me the most is the balancing of races and not knowing if I'm overpowered or underpowered. That to me ruins a race car game and that why I kind of call GT5 a driving game.

With that said...KZ3 seems to hit to nail on everything except this wide consensus the story is underwhelming. From my understanding, Halo or CoD have poor stories from bad acting, to camera work, to just plain bad storytelling. Gamespot says KZ3 is too long and predictable, but most stories in movies and games are because well....everythings been done and some. I'm a story man and if the story is lame, then it shouldn't be thrown in my face. I have to play it to get my 2 cents in, but I'm a little dissappointed...no alot because I was expecting a great story.
Everyone says the action is dead on great so that's a plus as action was the driving force for KZ2 in my book. I really hope the story isn't crap though.

Thank you for that link. What an honest, justifiable, non "my opinion" review. I usually don't watch the video reviews but this one was great. While he was explaining te game in certain areas, there was video of that game in a similar situation so I really got a feel what he was trying to get acrossed! I love this review! Some other websites need to take notes! It's about the game personal opinion doesn't always matter!

His opinion is all over that review, but the fact that it wasn't like you said an "My opinion review" makes it satisfying. He clearly presents his main topic and expands and transitions to then next topic. An honest review. He clearly stripped away my hestitation towards the story. You know whats sad, I was starting to take critical reviews serious, but then I forgot one main thing...reviewers are for the most part fanboys too.

So Ben or Arnold, when's our honest review coming?lol

What I meant was he wasn't pushing his bias on anyone. Every reviewer does what he did. It's the only way to express thought through the process. But he didn't go at it like his opinion was what mattered. He gave me as a reader or listener something to look forward to rather than how he thinks it should have been or how it compares to this or that. That's all I meant by what I said. Every review has opinion in it no matter what. And it should... To an extent.

All in all though as you said it was a good review I don't usually enjoy video reviews but that one wasn't Terrible.

Yeah, I already knew you met that. As far a video reviews go, I only know IGN, Gamespot, and Gametrailers make video reviews. IGN video reviews are entertaining to watch, but do little to motivate the viewer to call it great and they are not helpful. Gamespot does good video reviews when they have motivated clever people doing them, but sometimes they have those boring people who look like their reading big block cards. Gametrailers actually does the best video reviews as they show everything their talking about and do little comparing outside of the franchise or series. But all have one big problem, sometimes and most of the time their tone in the reviews don't reflect their score. Gamespots Dead Space 2 review plays like an 8 or 8.5, but ends up with a 9 as far as the PS3 version goes.

One of the most accurate sights I usually read reviews on is gamesradar.com, I believe they produce down to earth honest reviews though their GT5 review is harsh, but warranted.

wish they would release the last DLC maps from KZ2 to this, the one with the train and the cruiser level they were by far the best KZ2 maps!
hopefully GG will be supporting this game allot better than KZ2, 2 map packs and goodbye thats pathetic!!!!!
we need to see monthly additions like what bungie do with halo for this series to really take off, and be the definitive place for ps3 multiplayer just like halo is for the 360.
