Uncharted Movie Director Has Us Scratching Our Heads

"Dear Naughty Dog: Please pay attention to what Hollywood has planned for their movie adaptation of your wonderful video game. ...something bad may be happening."

While the "Uncharted" film may feature a star-studded cast - Mark Wahlberg, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, etc. - and a competent director in David O. Russell, it appears there's something...missing in his understanding of the video game. During a recent IGN interview, he says he has "total respect for the game" and that his "kids love playing it." He also says he loves to play it and then goes on to mention some "family dynamic," talking about "a crime family that metes out justice in the world of art and antiquities." But it doesn't end there; Russell goes on to compare the "Drakes" to the Sopranas, in that they both have "great taste" and "a sense of justice." When asked why he wanted to make this game into a movie, Russell replied:

"Because it's centred around a family, and I like the combination of criminals and truth. These guys they're tough but they're working on this crazy case, and they can't do it without truth. I think that's cool."

...what's he playing? Did we miss a step? Nathan Drake is the only Drake we know of; Sully isn't related and neither is Elena. Chloe definitely isn't related. Drake's a lone-wolf treasure hunter that gets a little help here and there; this "family dynamic" thing doesn't seem to exist.

But then again, we imagine the chances of Russell actually having played either Uncharted are...well, low. And this is why Hollywood and the video game world just don't gel.

A crime family? WTF! Drakes not a freaking criminal, I think it was clearly established in the last game that he's not really into that.

Come on, this is bull, if this is how the Drake movie goes, I won't even bother my butt to rent the sucker on disk or download.

There are words running around my head that I can't really type here, and even if I do, the filter will remove them. So let's just say that Uncharted isn't about the bloody mafia. The Sopranos are an utterly different thing, different concept, different scenario, different characters, different bloody everything. Someone at ND and Sony - who have actually played the games - needs to step in and crack some heads or this will flop bigger than a movie based on say...Doom, Wing Commander or even two supposed plumbers of Italian extraction.

Well, technically Drake is a criminal. He has demonstrated a casual disregard for the law. But even so he's totally unaffiliated with any criminal organization and of course has no known blood relatives. I've got real bad feeling about this.

Mayhaps this family is referring to is Drakes family, as in Ma and Pa Drake. Might we expect the movie to show some of his childhood and adolescence, progessing into the man he is today.

Wow I wish there was something ND could do to stop this. Last I heard they liked the direction the movie was going, but this can not be right! It sounds to me like he is playing something completely different. Or rather not playing it at all! What a joke!

I was very excited about this movie a year ago. As of right now this could be a devastating blow to even the game series! ND needs to and better be aware of this. This could turn upside down! I'm piss**!!

It looks like this guy knows next to nothing about the source material and doesn't really care to know.

It sounds to me like he doesn't love the source material. He only loves what he can do with the source material, or more to the point do TO the source material. It's the same kind of situation that gave birth to the travesty of "The Last Airbender".

Nathan Drake has never demonstrated any particular interest in justice. He's mainly just trying to make a living. He just happens to clash with people who are the scum of the earth in the process.

But I actually kind of got a bad feeling about this early on when I heard the names Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci. First, their inclusion is going to jack up the budget unnecessarily. Second, this is "Uncharted", an adventure franchise. It's not some gangster flick like Casino and it sure as hell isn't anything like The Sopranos. And I have watched the Sopranos before by the way.

In order for this movie to succeed it needs (aside from the biggest script rewrite in history) to have no big star power whatsoever. Actually they would do quite well just to hire the voice actors as they already have the attitudes, voices, and looks down pat. This should be done for the Heavy Rain movie too.

Yeah even the Live action movie of Ryu Ga Gotoku (Yakuza ) sucked.They hired the right actors but the most important thing,they didn't base the story on the Original,that's what killed the movie.
I think the same thing will happen with Uncharted if they're not going to follow the original story.

I haven't been excited about a video game to movie adaptation since... Mortal Kombat, and I was 11 years old could ya blame me?!? (the 11 year old in me still loves that movie by the way)

I just don't get my hopes up for these movies anymore. I cringe every time they are announced. It's always bad, Hollywood just has no clue.

Hell, a lot of these games have upwards of 60 min of cutscenes nowadays right? So just give the game devs 30 million dollars to re-render and paste together all the cutscenes/FMV's. Maybe make a few more to fill in the gaps and make that 90 min mark. I'd rather go to the theater for that than some bastardized hollywood garbage that does nothing more than tarnish the name of a great franchise...

What the fu**? This is an insult. If those remarks actually came out of this "director's" mouth then I'm damn pissed. Crime family? Criminals? The Sopranos?! What is this guy bias and narrow minded? I sure as heck aren't and I sure as heck don't want to watch another "East Coast" based movie where the world only exists in "Boston, New York, or New Jersey" and we have to settle for dialog full of "East Coast" accents. Save that kind of stuff for a different genre and a different type of film.

For a film based off the "Uncharted" series it needs to be in a world similar to the one we're familiar with when playing the game.

If this movie becomes a complete joke then why even continue supporting the video games?

Because they are freaking awesome, and just because Hollyweird screws up the premise making a movie, doesn't mean that ND had anything to do with the movie going in the wrong direction. So why punish them?

Actually they been quoted saying they like direction it's going in & they're basically standing off to the side letting it happen so so technically it is they're fault for even approving it as a movie. But yeah the games are good so we should still support the games at least.

I though at WORST it would come off as an Indiana Jones ripoff, but oh how I was wrong. That would be a blessing compared to this travesty. George Clooney is right about this guy.

A crime family? Are you effing kidding me? This thing is just doomed. I hate what Hollyweird does to our games but at least they typically have no real affect on how much we love the game series they butcher.

Wow, a lot of defeatist attitudes about something that hasn't even started to be produced yet...

But this is what I stated a few months ago that I was worried about... the director's take on things. While I continue to defend the actor's abilities (and Mark Wahlburg, too!), it will ultimately be decided by artistic direction of the director and the screen writer. Even if the actors fully understand their characters and nail them, if the director says otherwise, then "otherwise" happens.

Here's hoping these are just preliminary thoughts. Casting directors understand things much sooner than the actual director. It's quite possible that Russell hasn't begun his research much yet. (Directors often take credit for the casting director's work, by the way)

Either way, I wouldn't count my chickens til the eggs hatch, guys. All this early boycotting is a little silly. Be concerned, sure, but wait a bit longer. It might turn around.

I was clicking around the cable last weekend and watched Chun li fight Vega in that Chun Li movie out of curiosity and wow was that horrible. And yet recently they said they would be moving forward with more Street Fighter movies. I'm flabbergasted.

I have two more suggestions-for-change for David O. Russell in his movie.

Can you please:
(1) Change the name of the protagonist from Nathan Drake to something else, for example, Tony Soprano. Also, change the names of the main supporting characters.
(2) Change the name of the movie from Uncharted to something else.

That should just about do it.

I think Gamers need to form an official Board of Game to Move Adaptations or BOGMA. Gamers will know not to see movies that aren't Board Certified, and we will have the pleasure of mailing these companies massive lists of posted complaints during movie development in order to change the mind of the producers and directors.

Not really a surprise considering the catalogue of craptastic movies based on our beloved vidjoegames,silent hill being the closest to acceptable.
resident evil-made me wanna cry,Doom-did cry,super mario bros & mortal kombat-not to bad if you dont have a head.
Then their's the uwe boll movies;haven't seen them all but house of the dead made me want to stick a red hot poker in each of my eyes and take a blow torch to my ears!
Unless this turns out to be the next dark knight i think i'll pass.

That just ain't right.Keep the story,keep the setting,ffs.Don't expect a couple of movie stars to make your film good.Mark Wahlberg is indeed a good actor,but even he couldn't fix the abomination that was the Max Payne movie.I loved both Max Payne games,and the second trailer for the movie was absolutely awesome.Too bad it was the only awesome thing about it.Essentially,if they had copied the story of the game the movie would have been really,really good.So,learn from the past mistakes of other people and actually do it this time.Or have Naughty Dog team up with someone and make it a graphic novel.

But I could have sworn that, not only was this reported last year at some point, but there was a follow up article where David O Russel is reported to have talked to the Naughty Dog guys and said that he had "no idea" where the info in this interview came from.

I couldn't have hallucinated all this, could I have?

"First of all, all that stuff was denied by David O. Russell. He actually called us up and was like, ‘I don’t know what these guys are talking about."

That's in relation to the entire "family dynamic" idea. And now, in this "new" interview, he's just spouting the exact same nonsense, using the exact same terminology i.e. "family dynamic" and "meting out justice" etc.

Am I being a weirdo about this? Should I just let it go? I know other sites are reporting this "new" interview, as well, this isn't meant to be an attack. I'm just weirded out by this whole thing and my curiosity won't let go.

He may have very well played the game, but that has never stopped movie makers from twisting the plot into their own "vision" before. It's kinda like how everyone tries to sing their own version of the national anthem at the Superbowl and it always fails hard.

I believe Family Guy coined it, "Down Syndrome Girl" with a nice little song attached.

But no... DSW = Developmental Service Worker. She devotes her time to assisting people with developmental disabilities... helping them become independent if higher functioning... feeding them through a tube if extremely low functioning... and everything inbetween. Right now she works for 2 organizations. 1 she works at a respite home. The other she supervises a before and after school program.

She's pretty much Superwoman. Big heart, loads of patience, and I'm pretty sure every person that's ever met can't help but like/love her. And that's the truth. The woman has no enemies.

Every time I read something about the movie adaption of Uncharted I just come away SO disappointed...

I guess ND has NO say in what goes on??

Nathan Fillion is the PERFECT choice to play Drake... There is NO OTHER actor better suited for the role!

As fans of the game we need to either rise up and let it be known we are not interested in the current cast choices and especially the director who seems to be clueless.

I am a big fan of Robert Dinero but for Sully I think a better choice may be Gene Hackman...

I know Chloe isn't until Uncharted 2 but Kate Beckinsale would be a nice choice!

Well it wouldn't be hollywood if they didn't take the name of something popular and turn it into they're own B.S. for a quick payday. I'm sorry but those of you who were actually looking for this to be exactly like Uncharted should have known better I've saying this since they 1st announced it, c,mon ppl it's hollywood they don't take the stories in video games seriously this is how it's always going to be, not saying it still couldn't turn out to be an ok movie but it won't be uncharted.

you know what, even though i'm pissed at this idea of uncharted movie, it gives an insight on what type of "gamers" ign is. i mean if i was the one conducting the interview and as big a gamer as i am, i would at least point out that the family dynamic thing in the game is nonexistant. i mean, you're working on the subject of gaming and you let big things like this slip by, yeah you really love the game huh.

great here comes another plumber f up movie lol. what in any shape or form does uc have to do with criminals or family. literally i think this guy is talking out of arse saying his played the game but really hasn't. i think what what someone should do is quiz the guy. ask certain parts from both games, even little bit of the uc3 20 question total. he has to get them all right, no wrong answers at all. than will see if he actually played the game. than ng and Sony go in there slap the sense out of him to make the movie the way it should be like the game.

Read the interview when it first went up and was all like "Dude... WTF?!" This guy is seriously confused. And I thought that it was announced that ND had a measure of creative control. Surely they can step in and say, "You're doing it wrongly."

Ugh, I don't care for this guy's vision of Uncharted. Give me something that can be related to the source material, and we'll be good. Give me this family of treasure hunters BS and I won't be happy. I'll probably watch it anyway, but... again, Ugh.

Off topic: I've been wanting to write a comment on this for ages, but for some reason I was logged out. Trying to log back in has been a nightmare. I'm pretty sure I'm not a automated computer or whatever, but damn was it hard to read those captcha thingies.

Anyways, I just saw the fighter movie, thought it was good. Was happy to read that this guy was onboard the uncharted movie. Having read this article, however, it appears he hasn't done his homework. At the very least play the damn thing even if you dont enjoy it.

Can't work on the 'crazy case...without the truth'? WTF?!

This just in: more casting news for the Uncharted movie.

Director Russell has stated that he wants Scarlett Johansson for the role of Elena.

DeNiro will be playing Gabriel Roman.

Also, Joe Pesci is confirmed for the role of Sully.

Paul Walker has been cast as Flynn.

Ex-rapper Bow Wow will be playing Eddy Raja.

And--in news that should surprise no one--the role of Chloe will be played by John Travolta.

Unfortunately, I'm not joking about the first one.

That would actually be some decent casting... with the exception of Bow Wow. I don't mind Scarlett Johansson for Elena, at least she's alright to look at, and I thought she played her role in The Prestige quite solidly. Haven't seen her in too much else though.

Does anyone else think that the Chloe role will go to Megan Fox. Swear to God, if that happens, I give up on this film.

The fact that I can't remember Scarlett from The Prestige just proves my point. She has no personality. That may work in Lost In Translation, but it doesn't work for Elena. Plus, she looks nothing like her.

DeNiro could probably do a decent job, but I think Stardust was his last good film.

Pesci has one note and it's nothing like Sully. Kind of like Wahlberg and Drake.

Walker is possibly the worst actor in Hollywood. Watching him do an accent would be painful / hilarious. Watch Timeline if you want a preview.

Travolta would be amazing as Chloe, though. ; )

Megan Fox was too easy a target (and unfortunately too likely a possibility) to make my point. She's about as good a match for Chloe as Scarlett for Elena and IMO as overrated in terms of looks, so I wouldn't be surprised given the other real choices.

Wow, this guy's really starting to confuse the hell out of me. First he says exactly what he's said here a few months back, then he says that he never said that, and now he's saying the exact same thing again.

He should either make up his damn mind or let ND handle the movie. Hell, even if he makes up his mind he should still let em handle it, he's obviously out of his mind if he thinks he's played the games.

Sounds like the directors "ego" is getting in the way of this film actually being a "real" Uncharted film. Sounds like he is trying to make the source material his own by changing the story dramatically.
Just look what Hollywood did to Max Payne, They couldn't even keep one of the main Plot points, The record snowstorm hitting NYC essentially closing down every business and Public works. It may seem like a little thing but, it set the atmosphere of the whole game, that feeling of muffled isolation.

Wow, just wow. I knew as soon as they cast Mark Walberg, and not the obvious choice in Nathon Fillon, that this movie may be complete crap.

In IGN's most recent article the director states,

"I'd love Mark [Wahlberg] to be in it, I'd love Bob De Niro to be in it; I love the idea of growing them into a cinematic family; I think that's a really cool idea, but… I guess you'll have to wait until you see the script."

A cinematic family.

A few weeks ago IGN had this article from Naughty Dog refuting Russell's original claims

with the heading:

Uncharted Not Really About Family?
Game director says filmmaker denies controversial comments.

Some other comments above state similar claims, but I definitely remember reading about this.

Who knows, though. Can we actually get a solid movie out of this?
