Rocksteady Not Bringing The Caped Crusader Online

It's probably the same comment we'd get from Sony Santa Monica in regards to God of War.

But perhaps Batman fans were hoping Rocksteady Studios would add a multiplayer mode of some kind into the upcoming Arkham City. ...you know, like almost every other title in existence today. But studio director Sefton Hill has confirmed that no such mode will exist, and that Batman remains strictly offline. A reader has jubilantly told us (he must think the addition of multiplayer would have an adverse effect on the single-player campaign, and he might be right) that Hill just recently made the clarification-

"There have been a number of rumors circulating about a multiplayer mode in Batman: Arkham City so let me start by saying, once and for all, that Batman: Arkham City is a single-player only experience."

They did consider it, apparently, but in the end, they just couldn't find a way to maintain their high standard for quality if they brought the caped crusader online. He admits it's not the "fashionable choice" but he believes that when gamers complete the new adventure, they'll be plenty satisfied, and won't regret buying the game. And you know what? We totally believe him; we're on board all the way.

Glad to hear it but i have to say the rumor about the multiplayer(one player as batman the rest as villains eg.joker, two face ect. working together to stop batman)pipped my interest.
The 1st was amazing, extreme shock & awe had me pulling my hair out trying to get 3 bats symbols but when i finally heard that ping and got the platinum it was super satisfying.

Great relief. More devs need to feel confident about their games' purpose.

Online just feels so forced into some games these days. Not needed at all.

I'd prefer that content to be used in side missions for the game or extra costumes, etc.

Fine with me. Most of my favorite games are single player.

Oh good. I am so glad that they don't feel the need to tack on a multiplayer aspect to the game, or gimp the single player experience to fit it in there.

Just give me a game with an intriguing story that I can kick back with and escape the madness that is work and pre-med.

Batman needs to stay single player. If there is an online option added, maybe make it so the other person can play Robin or Batgirl. Or Azrael as an unlockable since he's dead. Or make it so other people spawn as the thugs trying to stop you, but definitely not the super villains. That's about the only way I could see it happening.

Off topic - Nice to see Civilization IV being the first video game to win a Grammy last night. It won the trophy in the Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists category.

And in sad news, Mirror's Edge 2 has been canned :(

It was amazing but odd. Why'd they give a grammy to such an old game? Or was it just a representation of how far behind the times the grammys really are?

I'm with pretty much everybody else on this one. It was great as a single player already why ruin it with a tacked on multiplayer.

These Rocksteady guys are fantastic. Really smart devs. I especially like that they only open their mouths when they've got the right thing to say. They must be proud of what they've done with Batman, but they're not so fool as to get ahead of themselves. They're taking the franchise very seriously and not fooling around with some lame attempt at online Batman. Maybe one day they'll do it, but not this day. And I like it.

Yeah, Batman doesn't need multi-player. I'm buying AA for the story and single player fun! I'm not sure who would want a Batman fragfest?

Those that do want online can just play DC:online but for the rest of us I'm glad this is going to be a quality SP title.

Great to hear! Major props to the developers and the investors for having the balls to leave out online multiplayer. Just like we have games that are solely (or mainly) created for multiplayer use, we need some really strong AAA titles on the other side of the spectrum too. We had God of War III and Heavy Rain last year, and I am glad to see the trend continue.

Personally, I hardly ever play online. I buy games because I want to be told a good story and get a chance to act it out!

I'm kinda glad, multiplayer could have brought the review scores for this game down, but we will never know now...

I'm fine with Rocksteady's decision, but it would have been pretty cool to see Nightwing flipping in out of nowhere and helping Batman out. But only as an offline co-op feature.

Long live single player only games, you hear that you bunch of bumshufflers? Batman don't need no pompous MP addition to crap on him. He craps on you. Cuz he's a bat.

Good news for me too.
It could have been more interesting than any CoD online but it would take major time and investment, and I don't like compromising a SP.

crysis 2, RAGE, this and bioshock infinite will be dukeing it out for MP GOTY 2011!
my moneys on bioshock infinite.
looks so unique, different but then at the same time so familiar and amazing!
both crysis 2 and RAGE look FANTASTIC!
but there nothing new, so it will be batman and bioshock fighting it out for the crown!

It's nice to see that at least some companies still have their integrity intact. I'm sick of seeing games with multiplayer modes, which clearly don't need them and no one plays after the first month. It's even worse when they tie trophies to them.

Just because there's a bunch of new people on the gaming scene that only play MP, that doesn't mean every game needs it. They only buy Call of Duty and Madden, anyway, so I don't see why devs keep trying to cater to them in games they don't buy.
