Crytek: Crysis 2 PS3 "Looks Just Like The 360 Version"

When discussing Crysis 2, PlayStation 3 owners have been asking the same question over and over: will we get an inferior PS3 version?

Well, developer Crytek has an answer: absolutely not. Executive producer Nathan Camarillo told GamerZines that Crysis 2 looks identical on the PS3 and Xbox 360, and the only difference between the versions is the key prompts. When asked if the team had encountered problems with the PS3 (due to the fact that we haven't seen the PS3 in action yet), Camarillo's reply is as follows:

"No, not at all. It's all ready to go. It looks just like the 360 version. Other than the key prompts you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The PS3 version runs the same as 360; 30 frames a second and in 3D, you know, everything. I don't know why EA chose not to. I'm more than happy to show it."

We think we know why EA chose to show the Xbox 360 version. ...we would too if we had a little extra cash in our hands. At any rate, we're just going to remain optimistic and trust Camarillo's words. We're excited to see Crysis 2 when it arrives on store shelves on March 25.

For the record, it was Sega who made that claim; I don't think Platinum themselves said the games would be identical.

Not sure, though.

The reason they went with the 360 version it's really simple:

The Xbox 360 is presently seen as the hardcore market leader by the industry. That's why they went with that version.

It's like last generation when they would show the PS2 version of a multiplatform game that came out for the Xbox and GameCube. The PS2 was the market leader and that's the version they would always promote more.

So I think EA was trying to be diplomatic with their response.

My first thoughts exactly Jawknee when I saw that title for this article.

Is it a compliment to say a PS3 game is as good as the inferior console version? Okay, maybe in running speed, but graphics? I'm sorry, but what happened to Crytek's claim of optimising the game for each console? Didn't they say that the PS3 version would look and perform better than its 360 counterpart? And now they're saying it's going to look the same!!

As I said in the last Crysis 2 article, PC only for this game, and even then will wait for it to be half price. Still need to get through Crysis and C: Warhead.

Plus, Crytek are better PC developers. I think it's better that companies stick with what they know. Bungie can stick with Microsoft for all I care, as long as Sony has Naughty Dog.

Completely agree.

Its actually a truth.

Because if they used both machines to their 100%. Then the PS3 version would run better.

Thats a fact isnt it?

Because the PS3 has better specs than the 360, so if they used BOTH consoles full potential then that would mean that the PS3 version would run better, even slightly.

So yeah I agree, as far as im concerned if they really did use both consoles to their fullest, then they need to rethink their development strategy.

Either that or the red and green glasses.

Wow, 360 is really starting to age badly right now. Not surprised if the next Xbox is only released to play catch up with PS3.

there using a new 3D mode they created themselves.
normally with 3D you render everything twice, then the display unpacks it and the glasses do their work.
tis why 3D effectively halfs the FPS because everything has to be done twice.
what crytek have done is effectively create something once then duplicate it kinda like copy and paste so everything is only done once, thus reducing the performance hit, and thus removing the bandwidth issues.
very impressive, in fact 3D only has a 1.2% performance hit according to crytek, not bad when considering all other 3D modes are more or less halving the frame rate!

MS went for the cheaper alternative. They slapped a larger RAM, better graphics card and wireless controller into the original Xbox and called it a day. And for that, PC and PS3 gamers everywhere must suffer.

If it weren't for Xbox Live and Halo, I seriously doubt the 360 would have survived at all.

Jawknee,

I’ve written this before, but I’ll reiterate it here.

Where was that sense of fairness last gen when every multiplat developer under the sun enhanced their PS2 games’ graphics when they ported them to the 360. Well, for the most part, because there were some exceptions.

Suddenly this gen it is equality for all… and a little M$ft cash too!

Also, for the life of me, I still don’t understand why the 360 gets so many exclusives (mostly shmups and adventure games… but still) in Japan. Could there be that many developers that are happy selling 4,000 copies of their games in Japan?

I don’t really care because I have a Japanese 360 (PS3 and Wii too), but I find it curious a Japanese-specific developer would choose the smaller market intentionally.

I guess M$ft must be really stuffing those developers’ pockets with Yen.

Orvisman, I wasn't even aware developers upped their game when it came to PS2 ports to the original Xbox. The only game I ever played on the original Xbox was the first Halo game when I wasn't playing Counterstrike for my FPS fix. The PS2 and Gamecube took care of the rest of my gaming needs.

All digital is way too expensive, they will either have to make a proprietary disc (also expensive) or come up with some crazy compression and stick with DVD. Sticking with DVD would have the net benefit (to them) of holding back yet another generation of gaming in their favor.

It's already 250 gbs of harddrive this gen. I'm really confident it'll be over 1 terabyte hard drives for next gen.

Multi-platform games on average will probably be close to 15-20 gb next gen. So the next console can store 50-60 games. It makes sense is storage, they just need to solve the issue of internet speed.

Godsman - The hard drives in the xboxes aren't the problem, it's the amount of data the servers can store. There is currently somewhere around 800 games available on the 360, even if each game averaged about 6 gb of data, they would need 4.8 tb to store this gen's xbox games, which is quite a bit of space, especially since they'll obviously need the games on more than one server. I really can't see the next xbox going all digital, since it doesn't seem like it would be profitable enough for Microsoft(who knows though, they could always think that because it's worked so well with steam, it will work for them too.)

4.8 TB is quite large for an individual console or PC, but for a large scale server, it's quite small.

I will find out. Oh yes, I will find out indeed.

This is Crytek's moment to show us that their engine should be preferred to the UE3 when it comes to multi-plats. And judging from the Xbox LIVE demo, the graphics engine seems to be more than up to the task at trumping the UE3.

I'm optimistic for this game. Not so much for it being a tech showcase as it is being a game that's more my gameplay style.

while it may be better than UE3, what isn't, I still would hate to see devs continue this practice.

I hate that devs are taking an engine made for fps and using it for action adventure games, 3rd person shooters, rpgs, and everything else. It's just dumb.

Even if it was the best fps engine in the world it wouldn't matter. You can't use a ferrari for a school bus and you shouldn't use other people's left overs when trying to make a triple A title.

Unreal Engine 3 may be showing its age, but it isn't THAT bad.

I mean, Rocksteady certainly impressed with Batman A.A. Gears of War 3 looks pretty darn good. Sure, none can hold a candle to the awesomeness of Uncharted or Killzone, or even Heavy Rain for that matter! Least those games don't make everything look shiny and plastic like UE3.

Point is, sure UE3 has its flaws, but it's still awesome! Like Tiger Woods, showing his age, still the most popular name but there are better golfers out there winning tournaments right now. That's UE3 in a nutshell.

its funny that they stated that crysis 2 would take every ounce of power out of this gen consoles. now they say both versions will be identical.

okay, its a fact that the ps3 hardware is the better of both systems. we also know that the ps3 is capable of making xbox quality exclusive games and also capable of completely surpassing them. so why dont developers use xbox exclusive quality as the bar for multiplatform game? all i can think of is that devs dont really care about doing the best they could. i really hate this "good enough" attitude that multiplatform developers are adopting. i blame this on activisions and their developing subpar quality games and the people who buy them, so i'm partly to blame becuase i did buy cod games from 4 to black ops. although black ops is definitely my last. its all killzone, uncharted, resistance, and battlefield for me.

Is that supposed to make PS3 owners happy? That basically means that the PS3 version was downgraded in order to be identical to the 360 version. Everyone who has played the awesome PS3 exclusives knows that the PS3 is the more capable machine cause those games are clearly more advanced technically than any game on other consoles.

After all that smugness Crytek had generated, all of it concludes to nothing. They probably found coding on the PS3 harder than they thought. If so then they underestimated Guerilla & Naughty Dog.

Or maybe they believe that if there isn't a balance between both systems then the sales would be comprimised. This happened with FFXIII. Though unlike FFXIII, I wouldn't see a reason to do this, as the majority will purchase this title on the 360 as if it was a rule of thumb.

As a result of this supbar attempt, aggressive PC gamers will now find a lame excuse to shit all over consoles. Great.

Honestly im so sick of hearing about how developers these days say that both versions of the game are equal and its usually the ps3 version that gets shafted with the inferior version while we all know the ps3 is far more capable than the xbox 360.
i dont ever remember hearing developers say the same in the last generation of consoles, it was well known that the xbox was more powerfull than the ps2 and developers took advantage of that and dint hold back and pretty much all the games reflected that but in this generation its the ps3 that is more powerful than the xbox 360 but instead of showcasing that they cut the ps3 short when it can do so much more.
thats why those developers will never earn the respect that developers like naughty dog and kojima have earned.

I've never really known him to mince words, I trust what he has to say. If they encounter limitations and problems, Crytek is known for voicing those issues without remorse.

I'm excited to see this game running on PS3.

Another lazy development house porting the Xbox 360 version over to the PC and the PS3. I don't even think this game will sell all that great on the console front. There are too many FPS games out there already as is and more are on the way. Crysis 2 is a PC game to me.

I feel more sorry for the PC gamer getting some build from a 2005 machine with 2003 technology. PS3 owners at least have Killzone 3 and Resistance 3, games powered by the PS3 and the PS3 alone.

I agree, Crysis is a PC game in my mind. Crysis was the golden apple I could never get to. My rig wasnt up to par to play it...still have the same system so obvious Im STILL not able to play it :(

But Crysis is one of the most beautiful game I've ever seen...STILL! (Only on the PC, consoles look watered down)

Im going home tonight to try the online demo...*crosses fingers*

I didnt understand half of that.

But Crysis 2 on PC WILL be the best version by far.

If anything is a crappy porting over to 360 and PS3.

But trust me, Crysis 2 PC will be the best of all.

This doesn't sound like they're pushing the consoles (at least the PS3) to their limits like they claimed to. I'm one of the bigger 360 fans here but I'm not blind to the fact that the PS3 is the technologically superior machine. The best on the 360 is not nearly as good as the best on the PS3. While they might be pushing the 360 to its limit, it doesn't sound like they're close to pushing the PS3 to its.

I still think its funny that devs have to reassure everyone that the more powerful console will be up to par with the weaker console. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Isn't this contradicting their statement from the other day about how they squeezed out every ounce of power.

Gee Crytek, don't do PS3 owners any favors! Yet another multi-platform game I won't be picking up anytime soon. I'll be spending my money on Killzone 3 and Resistance 3, thank you. ;)
