Gran Turismo 5 Version 1.06 Loaded With Big Updates

Polyphony Digital continues to support Gran Turismo 5 and in some ways, the whole situation reminds us of MAG.

GT5 was a more complete game when it initially launched but in terms of massive new additions, fixes, updates and enhancements, it's indeed similar to the positive progression of Zipper Interactive's ambitious online shooter. Version 1.06 is here for last year's best racer and it's loaded: check out the full rundown over at TheSixthAxis; this new update features everything from Remote Racing (about time!) to using the Course Maker feature in online races. Here's just a snippet of what 1.06 delivers:

Remote Racing – [Remote Races] have been added to the bottom left of the [GT Mode] – [Community] screen. Here you can start a fully automated B-Spec race using yours and your friends’ “My Drivers”, and gain rewards and experience from it. For details please see section 8-4 [Remote Races] in the [Manual] accessible from the main menu, and also the new “Remote Race” page on gran-tursimo.com, under the GT5 product information section.

Using the Course Maker in Online Races – You can now use one of the “My Courses” created in [Course Maker] for your online races (in Open Lobby, My Lounge), or select themes and generate courses on the spot. (Please note you’ll only be able to use My Courses created after this update).

Introduction of Performance Points in Online Races – We’ve now introduced Performance Points (PP), a numerical index of a car’s performance for online races. You can set PP restrictions in the online race regulations (in Open Lobby, My Lounge) to limit participating cars. For details, see 6 -15 [Performance Points] in the [Manual] accessible from the main menu.

  • It is now possible to replay and save [2P Battle] races.
  • [Controller Steering Sensitivity] has been added to [Driving Options].
  • [Corner Bank Angle] has been added to the section settings in [Course Maker].
  • In A-Spec events including endurance races, a confirmation prompt has been added before restarting a race from the beginning.
  • In replays, B Spec and while watching races, you can now change viewing targets directly from the screen without having to use a separate window list.
  • Personal BGM can now be used when voice chat is disabled in a [Lounge].

But really, click through the link above to see them all; there's lots more. It seems that every time I'm ready to put the game down for good, something like this happens and I just have to check it out again.

YES! At last! Coolness. Now I have a problem though. I'm so close to finishing off what I want to on WKC, and Hyperdimension Neptunia arrives in less than a week (delayed shipment of preorder). But....GT5 is definitely back on the table. :)

No one would probably believe me, but I spent around 6 hours last night, setting up as many cars as I could for drift, drag, and race, by adjusting the gear ratios. The addition of weight ballast is definitely interesting too.

The problem now is the game doesn't have the option to have at least 3 different set-ups for each car like Prologue did, so I keep a personal database to myself.

What if they're multi-million dollar cars? :0

Cars can be expensive, plus the upgrades. Cash in GT5 is the slowest grind in all of GT. Unfortunately, the 20 million dollar cap is still there too. In past GTs, I racked up past 100 million so I don't have to worry about my money wearing out if I wanted to buy multiple cars.

PP to set fair online races = win

Thank you, that's what I've been waiting for.
Controller sensitivity is welcomed in my book. Being able to use our music online is very much welcomed. Now I can use my amazing list of songs and no more punk music.

Remote races sounds really fun, I was really hoping for this. Makes B-spec more life-like and more useful.

Who needs to watch real-life racing when you can set up remote races :D

Remote racing is a cool feature but I don't like the fact that your ps3 has to be on to use this feature. I just don't want to leave my PS3 on all day while I am at work.

Nice.
One thing I'd like to see is a fixed camera, or user controlled camera option when buying cars. It's not that I don't like the car demos, I'd just like to have more control examining my car before I decide to buy.

Wow...shouldn't these things have been incorporated into the final product...I mean 5 years man...c' mon.

Why do we (PSX communitY) always complain about others developer making poor development decisions, but as soon as a PS3 first party developers create a shooty product...we're quick to defend it. If this were NFS, I'm not sure everyone would be applauding such an update because this is the way the game should have been before they released it. I'm just being honest and fair here. These are flaws that should have been taken care of during development since it was 5 years +. We shouldn't praise them for this...but say...finally.

But, hey these updates are more than welcome that's for sure. I still play GT5 faithfully and these updates make my GT life much easier.
That GT5 update list is longgggg!...whoa

First off I'm more of a fan of Need for speed than gran turismo, sims aren't my thing, like the arcadey.

However the difference is, that gran turismo 5 had about 10 times the content at release that NFS Hot pursuit did.

The updates that people complain about typically are things that make a game not work properly. These updates here are simply adding more content to the game. Consider it free dlc in update format.

There was nothing wrong with the game when it launched. It launched with a great deal more content than 99% of the games out there. These updates are additional content. Free DLC if you will like Kraygen said. So praise for PolyPhony's continued GT5 support is warranted and much deserved.

I agree FM23. Some of the features that were in this patch should have been included in GT5. But outside of Gear Ratio adjustment and the increased XP and credits in A-Spec, the rest could be considered nothing but updates.

Plus, PD has proven that they are listening to the fans. Look at what they have patched in thus far. Most of it is community requests.

With these other developers, I see this community (and I partake in it) bash the developers for not maximizing the PS3 or offering blanket statements about they maxed the console out in what seems like nothing more then attempt to pull a fast one over the PS3 user base.

Yeah...I see people didn't get the point of what I was saying. I liked the game upon release...didn't have a problem with anything except a few things that are prevalent in alot of games. And I did prasie PD for addressing issues. My point was people are praising a game for fixing issues that shouldn't have been there because the game took 5 yrs to create. That's pretty much all I'm saying.

Think about it...UC2 was UC2 because it had everything from the get go. If this game need patches to fix plaguing issue or add in feature...UC2 wouldn't have been as great in some eyes. GT5 is of course a racing game so comparisons don't really work and fixing issues are more lient, but the point is...these are things they should have thought about during development.

Yeah GT5 has more content then most games, but that has nothing to do with fixing problems inside the game. Never complained about content, I complained about continuing patch work for a game that didn't release to its fullest potential. I mean my professor wouldn't let me take his final again because I wasn't ready for it on a certain date. I had a whoe semester to study. That's my fault, but the teacher will applaud me for taking his course over to do right on my part. Well I'm prasing PD like the proffessor, but also pointing a finger at the student for redoing my class...or in the case of PD, pointing the finger at their development process and missed steps.

That's all I'm saying. That and well...no one views anything wrong with this. A final product is a final product...no matter how big you dreamed. I love GT5 and I love the fact they are fixing things I most likely didn't even notice. So I'm not bashing this at all...I'm just saying...they didn't think about this during development...again 5 yrs.

"UC2 was UC2 because it had everything from the get go."

Not true. Uncharted 2 received a ton of patches to fix and enhance the online experience. Too many to count.

Also you keep saying you don't have problems with the content but the problems that needed to be fixed but fail to name anything that was wrong with it.

I don't think your bashing the game, I just don't think you're being realistic. It's like you're looking for a reason to not give PD credit for giving us free content via patch work. There was nothing wrong with the game when it released other than some missing some features some wanted and didn't get. Now that problem has been remedied through free DLC.

These updates aren't fixes. The game was massive when it released and all PD is doing is growing the game beyond what they had finished in time for the games release. Nothing wrong with continued support.

@Jawknee

Bro I don't know what say to you because honestly, it doesn't seem to matter how I word it going to read wrong you know? I am not bashing them for fixing any issue mentioned in the update...I'm just pointing out issue with these type of patches because most of these are something that could have easily been incorported during the 5 yr development.

My point is...5 yrs to build this game and they still have loose ends. Most of these issues never bothered me as I never noticed alot of them from what I read except for that online bit. So yeah...I'm very thankful for this update. Better late than never. Like I said before, UC2 was a bad comparison and also...UC2 isn't about MP as it is SP.

My issues with GT5 that I would like to see fixed:
1)Incorporate an XP/Money reward system for using lower grade tires, less upgrades, and assist (like most games)
2)Be able to request a car in the used car lot by fee or something. (Too much time spent waiting for a Mit. Super Rally Lancer to appear)
3)Being able to save car settings for both tracks and driving style (Tired of manually converting a drift car into a racer and back)
4)Decreased load times/loading menus

These are all nitpicking issues with the game for me. There more, but it doesn't matter because I still enjoy the game and none of these change the overall experience. My point is, why should we only praise them fixing and upgrading features in the game? Why don't we also question why these things weren't incorporated in the final product? that took...again 5 yrs to make. That's my issue. We're quick to defend our favorite games (KZ3), but tear down games/developers we don't care so much for...like CoD.

Like I said...I'm not taking issue with this "DLC" upgrade thing...just the fact everyone is praising PD for something I'm not sure they deserve to be only praised for...you know? Why not say...FINALLY. That's how I felt when I first saw this.

Either way, I agree with everything you said about praising PD for paying attention. No beef there. I'm being realistic too...5 yrs is alot of time to realistically think of ways to improve your franchises racer. And also...this is soaking up more of my harddrive. lol

And yes...I am aware this update add features, but it also fixes problems as well. I read the article on sixthaxis. I love this update and I am not try to convice anyone not too with my previous essays...lol. Just saying...5 yrs.

I don't know where you were FM23, but a lot of people was really upset about waiting on GT5 for as long as they did. If Sony didn't force Sony to release GT5 back when it did, the GT community might be on an uproar. Back then, many people even requested to release GT5 as is, and update it through patches.

PD and Kaz could easily delay the game for another 3 months or so if they could. I bet you if people could vote back then between releasing the game as it was and update it through patches.. or release the game months later to make it closer to what it seems now, people would vote on just releasing the game back when it did in November.

GT5's community is huge, and it doesn't really balance with their minuscule staff, so imagine the pressure. Many other developers probably don't even have half as much pressure as PD have had in the past 5 years.

This is my first GT so my wait for GT was nothing compared to the fanbase. But your reply doesn't really address anything I said...your just telling me the obvious. If you aim high be prepared for both the highs and lows if you miss some steps. A game developer is no different in my opinion. Its life. My point is...5 yrs and they never thought about any of this before releasing it.

K, you're not getting me bro. What makes you think they never thought about it?? You're saying it like they've been been chilling on the beaches of California for the past 5 or so years, when they probably went through many sleepless night working on this thing. You think 5 years was an "on-and-off" thing? You're also comparing them to other developers which is mute, because PD's case isn't like most developers.

Again, you probably don't know the pressure they went through. You're even assuming they're not even thinking about it. How fair is that? How do you know they didn't want another 3 or so more months to polish the game to the point where they want it to be, but Sony pressured them to release it back in November..?

This is what I believe, but knowing PD's past and current status, at least I can back up my argument. In your case, you're just pulling out typical, obvious arguments that average GT fans pull out, with no backup or any idea and sense on how all this works. Don't believe me? Check out sites like GTplanet and just see how many of you there are.

Don't get me wrong though. Your argument makes sense, and it is what I expect to hear from a lot of people. But just because it makes sense, doesn't make it a valid argument. Sometimes you got to look at the "reality" aspect of it.

AI Adjustment
-----------------------------
Race choreography and opponent car AI controls for license tests and A Spec events have been adjusted.

Opponent car AI controls during B Spec races have been improved.

The evasive maneuver of opponent cars when a players car blocks the track has been improved.
-----------------------------

This brings tears of joy to my eyes!

Along with the amazing improvements brought forward through this update, a few little touches that I loved:

- While browsing for cars in any car lot, you get a nice little check mark for a car you already own. Bloody good idea for a game with 1000 cars!

- You can select multiple cars and add them to favorites from the garage.

Two thumbs (and toes) up for PD!
