Rumor: PS3 Price Drop Looming
The PlayStation 3 is currently half the price it was when it first launched in 2006. However, it might be due for another cost cut...
With the Next Generation Portable and the Nintendo 3DS on the horizon, it might be possible to see the PS3 drop in price before the year is out. PS3 sales have been popping up at various retailers, including Amazon, and UK retailer Tesco appears to be selling the PS3 Slim for less than £200. And apparently, this isn't just a coincidence; it's all pointing towards a price drop: according to an unnamed source, Sony is preparing a "massive price drop on all the official slim PlayStation 3 SKUs when the 3DS releases." This same source said the NGP would have a price tag of £250 in the UK, which isn't out of the realm of possibility. This European source may or may not be correct but we wouldn't be surprised to see a $50 price drop when the holidays roll around again. And according to this, it might even go into effect sooner.
Many will claim the PS3 is quite a decent deal for $299 but then again, the lower the price, the more accessible it becomes.

Although my Ps3 has been on for more than 24hrs straight. All I can say is Playstation3 is a well manufactured piece of hardware. The death percentage is like none! Unless you try to mess it up, it wont die on you.

As World said, I think selling off my original phat model wouldn't be wise, however I may eBay off my Silver 40gigger and then buy a new SLIM model for everyday use.
My orginal phat PS3 is being kept at a lower firmware for Linux usage at the moment.

I'm looking to get a slim, but only because I want another blu ray player and there are a few games out which have these weird glitches that only affect random fat ps3's. For most people not a problem, there is an easy work around, but I have like Titanic bad luck and they always happen to me in a way I can't get around them. So I'll be playing those games on my slim once I get it.

Would you ever play with him online or is he not that way inclined? Unfortunately my dad is nowhere near as accepting of new technologies as your dad... my father still does not use a computer nor mobile phone. He sticks to the old land line, has no internet access at home and has never sent an email in his life... he is well off the matrix.
To be honest though, as he is not connected at all, he has a very simple, stress free lifestyle and makes more money than me - he has nothing to waste it on but earns a ton of it...

If you want to get your dad gung-ho interested then try this just as a starting point, so you've given him a reason that he feels he really needs it.
Case in point, at least you've got a great way to get him into the net itself, just show him how to eBay/Amazon/1/2 price dot com/etc for the Vietnam books, DVDs, & all other related memorabilia.
Myself, I've always looking for biographical/autobiographical books on the Vietnam, WWI, WWII, & Civil War & I've garnered a nice Vietnam(& other American wars & conflicts) book & movie collection.......& for some pretty cheap prices too.
Hell, I just picked up 11 old paperbacks that written by the the guys themselves who had fought over there, for only a $1 each.
Anyway.... your dad could wind up not only having a new great hobby that he was not only an actual participant in, but also becoming a mighty proud owner a hell of a historical collection too.

If any of you guys needs an extended 1, 2 ,3 year or longer warranty on your stuff, then just use "SquareTrade" for great warranties at super-fair prices. They'll also warranty items bought from almost anywhere.

BTW, if anyone needs any cables, including the newer 1.4 HDMI, Ethernet, etc, etc, in almost any length, then use "Monoprice, the best & most upgraded cables at the best price & fast UPS shipping too.
(Example: I just paid only $4.34 each for 6 different color-coded 10 foot long 1.4 HDMI cables, and only $3.15 each for six 30 foot matching color-coded Ethernet cables, and $4.90 each for six matching color coded 50 foot cables)

For $50 they will even update your ps3 for you when you buy it. They try to tell parents who don't know any better that it's really hard to update. So lame.

there just about to release their phone and the NGP, so there going to drop the price of this bringing it ever closer to them?
you really thing people are going to shell out more for a phone which is a century old, or for a handheld?
at least at the price it is now it increases the gap between the prices so that helps justify their price.
not to mention sony just started making a profit on the ps3 so you would think lowering it again would just send them back in the negative.
and lord knows sonys going to need all the money they can get with their legal issues!
who said you cant buy the judicial system?
only in America could you get sued for doing something totally legal!
only in the country where you can buy a gun at 18 but have to be 21 to drink.
a bottle of JD is more dangerous then a loaded gun is it?
rolls eyes!

Mr Hots is in hot water for, among other things, publishing a heavily copyrighted and protected encryption key. Sadly, that isn't covered by the iPhone precendent. Neither is computer misuse or circumventing digital protections...
Oh, and while we're at it, since there are PS3s used as part of a US Government super computing cluster or two, hackers with the right keys pose a threat to those systems...something that courts don't tend to take a positive view of.

ok, so its ok for sony to break the law but not for us?
fine, as the saying goes dont do the crime unless you can do the time.
well were doing the time, so i might as well do the crime!
if M$ was to remove a advertised feature they would of found them in court seconds after they announced it!
OK, so leaking a security key is illegal.
so why is KB not getting sued?
surely, whats good for the goose is good for the gander!

2. What law did Sony break? They removed OtherOS from future versions of firmware but left it in the old ones, so people who wish to can retain it.
3. You stated "only in America could you get sued for doing something totally legal!" and yet now you accept that "OK, so leaking a security key is illegal.".
You know what, there are times when your comments are almost worth the effort, and there are times (like today) when you are nothing more than a pointless waste of my and everyone else's time. If you hate Sony so much - as you evidently do based on months and months of reading your comments, I have to wonder why you comment at a PlayStation specific site. The hyperbole and emotion that blind your comments, the seemingly limitless number of baseless statements and near total lack of factual information that peppers your comments is incredible to behold. The fact that some people still take your comments at face value is scary in the extreme.

This comes on the heels of the NGP and PlayStation Suite announcements, the Xperia Play and the whole "We're putting the PS4 on the back burner for now" thing. And then there's the we're gonna ban cheaters and pirates thing. Seems like PS3 is right in the sweetspot and a price cut would be perfect for accelerating the system through the next couple of years just as Wii and 360 start to show their age. With all those users starting wondering about an upgrade, Sony says that the next generation of hardware isn't needed yet (and really, look at the SP3, the next gen is here already). Instead, says Sony, why not come buy the PS3, look it's cheaper now. If MS and/or Nintendo want to come out with a new system, they have a difficult proposition when they offer nothing much (if anything) over what the PS3 can already do, the PS3 has a huge, and growing library and a very attractive price.
I think that if Sony were to cut the price of the PS3 now (or sometime in the first half of this year) it really puts the hurt on MS and Nintendo. After all, neither offer what the PS3 does, and at $250, the PS3 could rapidly become a default choice.

Who cares what Nintendo or Microsoft do at this point?
Name me two significant features that either Microsoft or Nintendo can offer that is not already something that the PS3 is capable of.
See, that's the point. If you bring a new, expensive console to market and it does nothing significantly better than the PS3, the PS3 will be cheaper and have more games.
Stereoscopic 3D support? PS3
1080p/1080i/720p video out? PS3
Upgradable mass storage? PS3
Online capability? PS3
Motion controls? PS3
Wireless networking and controllers? PS3
BluRay/DVD/CD playback? PS3
Games in 720/1080i/1080p? PS3
Voice command in games? PS3
Camera based motion control? PS3
Internet browser/Internet video? PS3
and on, and on, and on....
What significant new feature is there that is compelling enough to command a purchase, and is not something that the PS3 can't do? It's not like we're about to switch to a newer higher resolution video standard, we haven't even come close to finishing the switch to digital TV and 720p/1080i yet.
Ok, a new console is 'new', but if it does nothing more than the thoroughly debugged, and tested console with a great game library, developer support and lower price tag, which would you buy?

lets see ps3 came out had all these new awesome hardware but regardless of all that ms, heck Nintendo was kicking Sony ass. just cause you have awesome great hardware doesn't mean people will want it or dev will want to use it. took awhile for dev to get use to the ps3 hardware, only few can actually pull off a great game.
i know what the ps3 can do, but see you don't know and no one else know what the next gen console can do for Nintendo and MS. for all we know Ms could integrate their kintect into the 360 completely and have something better than blu ray and make xbox live free(which wouldn't happen im just saying.)
until officially we see the next gen consoles of MS & Nintendo you cant say it wont be better

Yeah, actually we do know. We know what is technically possible, we know what is on the drawing boards for the next few years in terms of video display in the home. We know the parameters that cannot/will not change for the next 5-10 years.
As I see it, those parameters are;
Internet - broadband speeds will increase for some, but the average service is still to slow for the majority. A compete overhaul of the infrastructure required costs billions and billions of dollars, and takes years. therefore, current cable internet speeds are about the sweetspot for the best in Internet service over the coming 5-10 years.
TV - HDTV is still moving into the mainstream. US broadcasters have finally gone digital, but not all of them have gone HD, nor is there a requirement for them to do so. Content is increasingly being made in HD, but the broadcast standards are pegged at 720p/1080i. Without massive investment in new infrastructure and a sea change in HDTV manufacture and purchasing, we will not see the current 720p/1080i/1080p HDTV standard disappear for more than a decade.
Home video - even with video on demand over the Internet, the best available quality is BluRay, and it's the best by an order of magnitude. Most Internet service simply isn't fast enough to deliver the kinds of bitrates required to achieve BluRay quality at 720p, never mind 1080p. Those rates will climb over the coming years, but Bluray will remain the best option for HD video in the home for at very least the next 5-10 years. Until a higher resolution standard is needed, BluRay has HDTV covered.
3D - Stereoscopic 3D, whether with, or without glasses is already defined in the HDMI standard. Without a massive change in resolution, this will not significantly change in the next 5-10 years, it's still in it's early adoption phase, and the technology to actually display in 3D might change, but the basic resolution and frame rates will not.
Command and control in a video game can be accomplished via various means. a hand held controller, gesture, full body motion capture and voice. All of these are catered to by the current HD video game consoles. Short of a neural interface or a new version of the PowerGlove, this is pretty much it, apart from refinements and enhancements to the existing technology.
So, for a *home* video console what is there that can be offered that is not already here? Unless Nintendo or Microsoft can usher in a whole new wave of super high resolution TVs and persuade everyone that despite their previous statements to the contrary, HD resolution does matter, I don't see how either console maker would really be able to bring much more to the table than is already here. I don't pretend to know what's in either companies 'mind'. However in terms of technology, we do know pretty well what is possible, what is available and what will be available. You can make a statement that they'll do something, but you cannot give any idea of something that they might do?

But if there's a price drop soon, this will motivate me to adapt her slim younger sister, & drop some 640 or 750GB's down her throat too.
Anyway, Keven Butler would have to agree with me here that for a PS3, obesity is certainly a good thing.
