PSXE Video: Killzone 3 Commentary

You've seen the review; now it's time to check out our first ever video commentary.

The timing was great. Killzone 3 arrives at just about the time we're branching out in 2011 and so, it earns the honor of becoming the first game we address on our PSXEOfficial YouTube Channel. We've got 13 minutes of high-definition footage complete with some discussion between my brother and I - who is responsible for doing all the taping and footage for this stuff - and I think it came out quite well.

There are no story spoilers in this video, and we will always keep such things out of our video commentaries. And once again, for the record, these aren't "video reviews," per se; our text reviews will always take priority, and we will reserve the video commentary for the biggest titles. The next game on the list is probably Dragon Age II and maybe, just maybe, an unboxing of the Xperia Play...

We're new to this so feel free to offer any feedback and suggestions. If there are other things you want to see, let us know. Also, I will remind you that this isn't the whole surprise...indeed, something much bigger in terms of audience potential is on the way. Stay tuned.

Great Vid, sounds like regular questions answered in a regular none "selling" way. (you know, just between real gamers) Staright to the point and honest. I love it. Glad to see PSXE expanding! Now, we still our presence in HOME known. Great Job maintaining the best PS3 site known to man.

First of all, the YouTube channel is awesome. I thought you guys did a great job with your first videos. And now I'm really pumped for this game to arrive this week.

Second, I liked the dual commentary, it always adds something to videos like this.

Third, Where'd you get the intro music? I thought I recognized it from like an old Gran Turismo game or something....but it sounds a little porno-ish, so i'm hoping I don't recognize it from there ;)

Anyway, How long do we have to wait for this "something much bigger in terms of audience potential"?? We're dying here!

Keep up the awesome work.

Not much longer. Depends on a few things out of our control right now.

As for the music, it's from the editing program that we use, which is referenced via copyright in the credits.

kinda off topic but Ben you were looking for feed back on the video and you seemed to be following the post so i figured i would put this here...the video was good, ver informative and made me want the game more now that i saw it lol but a few small things, as sven said the music was a lil porno-ish, and in my opinion it was a tad to long, if i had to make a suggestion i would recommend staying under 10 mins...but that could just be me

other than that i liked being able to see and hear about the game at the same time

Usually don't like to look up gameplay footage for games. But that was a welcome look. I'm going to try to get it from work tonight :)

Pure awesomeness slathered in awesome sauce. After looking at that I also can't believe anyone would consider this game less than an elite 9+ title.

To the Dutkas: Great work on the video and everything. I really can't think of much else to ask for except maybe some sort of epic introduction at the beginning. I love the jingle too.

It just feels good to be a member in good standing at this site. I feel bad for the people who don't get it and opt to get booted out for foolishness. Keep up the good work, it's great to be a part of this place and if I'm ever needed or wanted to contribute again you know where to find me :)

Just watched the first minute, and I will repeat myself.

Go onto options, select controls, then advanced, then switch the crouch button to HOLD instead of TOGGLE. Then, instead of having to click it to get out of cover, you just have to release the cover button. :)

That doesn't change anything. The mechanic is still set to be stuck against your cover. You still have to DO something to release.

The problem is not being able to choose to crouch near a barrier without latching to it--same with KZ2.

From a control design standpoint, the cover button really shouldn't be shared with the crouch.

Having a cover system is nice, and it is more fleshed out and significant in KZ3.

If a person chooses to work with the mechanic, I do, it really comes natural before long. Just like the slide-to-cover mechanic.

That was pretty awesome. I didn't realize there was new vehicle combat other than the jetpack, so that was really cool to see.

Amazing how smooth it was when you were driving the saw, no lag, no hitching, smooth like butter. Was really impressive with all that was going on.

Was glad there were 2 of you, video review with only one person talking is always a little awkward, this felt conversational and made you feel like you were just hanging with your friends discussing KZ3. Good stuff, keep it up.

I enjoyed your official-first commentary! Watching footage on Killzone 3 that they didn't focus on through trailers these past couple of months was a great addition. Honestly, the trailers I've seen on this game were lackluster and though I pre-ordered the game to support the franchise and the PS3, I wasn't looking forward to it. Now that I've seen the different scenarios that bring an "experience" feel to this world I'm really looking forward to Killzone 3. This looks like an excellent game and the gameplay/pacing of this is something I'll be enjoying every minute of.

I enjoyed the casual commentary and having three parts to it was a nice touch. Not too much, not too little. There weren't any awkward pauses and you didn't sound inexperienced throughout.

I figured maybe you were a bit nervous at the beginning but throughout you came around and sounded real comfortable. Right on.

I really don't like the music you play at the beginning and end of your videos though. I don't get it. It reminds me of GT5 tackiness jazz that a lot of people thought was the wrong move to make for its soundtrack.

Still, keep up the great work, the editing and audio were great and you guys did a great job. *high five*

You should have a montage at the beggining, highlighting the most epic parts (spoiler-free ofcourse), and perhaps organising it better, and try to touch on a bit of everything (graphics, music, gameplay etc).

Well, keep in mind we are trying to keep the major review emphasis on the written articles, so going too in depth on the video commentaries would draw away from that. Think of these as overviews. As for the montage, good suggestion I would have made it longer but as I have personally not cleared the game yet I wasn't sure what were spoilers and what weren't soo you can see where creating a spoiler-free montage with epic scenes could be problematic..

You indirectly mentioned the lighting system when you said everything looked a little shiny. Whites get really exaggerated when capturing an LCD with a camera, so everything looks super glossy.

I didn't see all of the footage, just 'cuz I'll be saving the moments (as spoiler-free as they are) for tomorrow, but glad to see your brother came in clutch. Loved the following exchange, btw.

Ben's bro: "This is an awesome game, by the way."
Ben: "Yeah, it's definitely creme of the crop. There's really nothing you can say against it"

If there's a way of doing a voice over on playback footage (which you can manually ff/pause/rw) through the editing software, that may free you up if you can't find someone to assist in the future. But I think the cross-banter really works.

This video reminds me of moments where I play a game infront of someone who's already played it and they just comment on everything and vice versa. It's annoying that they do it and it's annoying that I do it...that is what this video reminds me of...lol

One thing I must apologize for: I didn't touch on the Move compatibility in either the review or the video, just because I don't have that rifle accessory.

I only have a handgun-like accessory and I really don't think it would work as well. Besides, KZ3 is clearly designed for that official rifle attachment for Move. I have heard it works quite well, for what it's worth.

This game visually is stunning. It's pushing tech features no other FPS is pushing. And judging from the demo, I just can't identify with a handful of people, only from this site, who have referred to the image quality as "grainy." Not that I don't believe it, I'm just wondering what this isolated description could be attributed to.

The game runs at 720p. CHECK (higher than the average game)
The game uses CELL driven anti-aliasing: CHECK (some times this form of AA can produce crawling edges on long thin lines)

So what's causing the grainy?

When I sit closer to the TV, like 3-4' away (abnormally close) I can definitely see aliased edges (like most games), though, from normal distance (8-10' @ 40") it looks near flawless. With a clearer cleaner picture than KZ2. The only other thing I can think of is TV setting differences. Some TV's, especially LEDS, have higher than normal brightness levels. This alone could be producing artifacts and edges much more vividly than the norm.

ALso, the shiny walls in the cave/jungle/stealth level look to be accurately representing water condensation like they should in a cave-like area with higher than normal atmospheric humidity (look at the volumetric fog). Gears has a number of environments like this.

Anyway, I'll get the full game tomorrow when I can see it in it's finished, and entire state. I'm a tech-head with these types of games and I'm ready to be impressed. The demo was.
