Pachter Expects PS3 Price Drop In June

Most assume the three major console players will drop their prices this year, but it's looking more and more like Sony might be the first.

After a slew of sales found at various retailers and the rumor that a hack-proof PS3 is on the way, one of the industry's major analysts has weighed in: Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter says Sony might cut the price of their machine by June.

E3 starts on June 7 this year and Sony might announce the price drop during their press conference. As of now, they haven't mentioned anything about such a possibility, but the evidence is beginning to mount. The PS3 costs $299 but if Sony could manage to drop that price by $50 or even $100 some time this year, it could cause a definite sales surge, which might be the final push the system needs to top the Xbox 360 in worldwide numbers.

I don't think Sony would drop it by $100, to a price where it's lower than the Wii and equivalent to the price of a PSP bundle. Probably a $50 drop if they do indeed cut the price.

I'm a little bit torn about it, in one hand I would jump on the chance of getting a slim for 200 bucks (Please forgive me my phat love, you'll always be my number one :)) but on the other hand I would hate for them to be losing money on the hardware side again...
But at the 200 dollars price point, they would dominate the rest of the year and set the pace for overtaking the XBOX360 in the US.
This price the avalanche of top games coming down this year would be just too tempting to pass on. They would surely overtake MS.

If SONY lower the price too much, they will make a loss on each sale which is basically what they have been trying to combat since the launch.

They might be able to pull off the losses again and hope that all the Exclusive games this year sell amazingly well.

Maybe they are bundling Move to sell more hardwares

Money on console sales is generally not the case until late in the cycle. the money is usually made from the game licenses/royalties and the accessories. The Wii is the most notable, and only modern example of a console that sold at a profit from the start.

I think that they might being a new unit as a bundle for $299, and then at E3 announce that there will be a 450 price cut, and they'll start selling the base unit (no bundle) at $250. I also think that they will take the opportunity at this year's E3 to start bringing colors to the PS3 case. Though they might allow the dust to settle after the price cut, and then bring difference case/controller colors in time for the Holiday season.

I got a great deal this past Friday and it's still available in Canada at Best Buy until Feb 24/11.

A 320 GB Slim, with Modnation racers, U2, Karate Kid Blu ray movie and a PS3 Blu ray remote all for 299.99 Canadian.

My Phat is still alive, but for the past year I've been getting connection errors many times logging onto the PSN and at times it tells me an ethernet cable isn't connected, when it actually is.

The 299.99 deal was a great buy.

If you leave up an active torrent downloader on your computer it will cause havoc with your PSN connection and errors. Dunno if that's your problem, just sayin.

I hoep this is going to be true. I had some of my listed features i would like sony to have on thier next version. Espcially the 6 usbs and a RSX and CELL smaller than 40 NM so the console can produce minimal heat.

I think asking for a $50 price cut is a lot, seems all the evidence is there, but seems too much to hope for.

If it drops $100, I may have to run out and buy a couple before they all disappear.

So if it does drop $50, will we still get bundles like the kz3 bundle, but for $250? Because if the answer is yes, I might hold off on my infamous 2 order, in hopes of a sweet ps3 superhero bundle of my dreams.

Please dear Sony, make me an infamous 2 bundle with a lightning design on my ps3. If that was $250, yeah I'd buy more than 1 and if they made a more expensive version that had the hero version of the game, I'd be in heaven. Dare to dream.

If there is a cut, my bet is that the new 300GB SKU on it's own with a controller will be $250, and either a Move bundle at $300 including with the new 300GB SKU inside, or a game/BluRay bundle at $300 with the new 300GB SKU inside.

That's my prediction, I want Pachties job and pay-check.

If this price cut and the new "hack proof" model is an ultra slim model I'll pick one up by next year. I love my Slim and its going strong but it's starting to get louder and louder.

You think that's normal Highlander? Could dust build up on the fan cause it to work harder or something?

It's especially loud when I play DVD's or ripping a CD. The best way I have found to keep it quieter is placing it on the bottom shelf of the TV stand with the window cracked open. Since cooler air drops(it's winter here)the PS3 fan sucks up the cool winter air keeping the temp down.

Dust could build up, and the bearings on the fan could go bad - that can happen rarely. It's more than likely dust build up on the fan blades causing them to become unbalanced.

$100 seems quite out of the question. Not only because its insane, but also coz a certain upcoming "handheld PS3" might end up costing quite a bit more than the actual PS3!
