PSXE Poll Update: Most PS3 Owners Want Killzone 3

Although 2011 is young, Killzone 3 is clearly one of the year's best thus far.

And despite the fact that we don't have a huge shooter contingent here at PSXE, the great majority of readers say they either picked up Guerrilla's latest effort the day it came out, or plan to grab it at some point. KZ3 is a fantastic FPS by all accounts and stacks up very well against the competition. There's some talk that the team may want to tackle something new in the future, although you can bet a fourth Killzone will be forthcoming. We're also hoping KZ3 is a much bigger sales success than KZ2; the latter sold relatively well for an exclusive title, although it's likely that both Sony and Guerrilla expected more. This time around, we are seeing more commercials - thanks, Kevin Butler - and it appears that many PS3 owners are appreciative of Guerrilla's efforts.

This week, there isn't a huge amount going on in the gaming world and it's Oscar night, so let's find out- who's watching the 83rd Academy Awards right now? Which picture is going to win? Does anyone else think James Franco looks a little out of it? How many costume changes will Anne Hathaway go through before the night is over? Which of you are movie buffs? ...who just wants to watch the exceedingly wealthy pat themselves on the back for five hours?

I picked up KZ3 day one. I wouldn't classify myself as a shooter fan, but I do dabble! lol

Anyways, after playing KZ3, even my CoD nut friends have switched! (YESSSSS!!!) I don't have any idea why anyone would play CoD over this... it's just SO much better... Nostalgia maybe? I dunno... but it's silly to favor anything over KZ3. I've played Halo since day 1, too... but NOTHING matched KZ3 in the shooter realm. (Have to see how Crisis 2 does.)

As for the new poll, I'm a theatre major. I don't miss the Oscars.

I see a lot of similarities between CoD and KZ gameplay wise. Though, KZ is the higher quality product. I can't really see myself going back to CoD because it just feels like a lesser version of the same type of gameplay.
But I do prefer Halo and Half Life over KZ for several play design related reasons. Which those reasons are simply more compatible with my personal preferences. All 3 of them are really different games. Neither one feels quite like the other.

@Temjin
The one mode I really love about Halo:Reach is the zombie mode. I can't remember exactly what it's called, but it's the one where one person starts out infected and has crazy speed, no shield, and a sword. The other players turn to a zombie when killed... you know the one? I don't own an XBOX360 anymore, so I don't play enough to remember. But my friends own them, and we system link from time to time.

Truth be told... if the wives didn't go shopping while we played, we would probably play more often. :p Suddenly, system linking gets expensive quickly! We're pretty sure they do it on purpose to get back at us for being gamers. lol

So yeah, I can understand preference due to gameplay preferences. That zombie mode was crazy fun.

I believe its called Infection? And yes, it is very awesome....I also really get a kick out of GrifBall.
Halo (all of them) would be hard to compare to Killzone. I'd say that Killzone is def more comparable to Call of Duty (and much better IMO) if simply because of control scheme, pace, style. People always want to compare Halo and Killzone because they are their respective systems' flagship FPS, but I feel as they are way too different. I love both of them though.

KZ3 was/is both satisfying and dissappointing. It's still possesses high quality, but that 'been there done that' feeling came over by the end of the campaign and the ending in my opinion was terrible. KZ2 did a better job. The MP maps are also smaller and this new spawn point idea kills alot of the fun of placing your own spawn points (increases the likehood of campers) and maps feel much smaller and cramped this time around except for the Highway map and Frozen Damn. Too me the campaign's action is above KZ2, but the story and MP in Killzone 2 were better in most regards. Custom matches would make matches so much better as longer time for objectives would give people a chance to capture spawn points and make a good pushes to advance. Everything feels too short and that why I always played long matches on KZ2...just better in my opinion. This time...everything is get in and get out. Not sure I dig this. This spawn point idea to me sucks big time...bring back spawn bombs. And the hit the detection is out of wack. Anyway I'm enjoying the game, but KZ3 is definitely a downgrade from KZ2 in my opinion. I do like the new controls though.

I experienced that spawn point camping crap yesterday. This one guy wouldn't get out of a tactical spawn point so I kept going in after him. This is were your point about the hit detection comes in. I cooked 'nades and tossed them in and he somehow survives and kills me. I even got there before him, he spawns, I shoot him a few times and he walks up and melees me, once again I die. Eventually I captured the spot and did the same to him. After a while it was just like only me and him we were playing because no one else was even bothering to complete the objectives. KZ3 is not COD. Anyway we wound up getting in a squad together because like me he realized this flaw in the gameplay. Its annoying but I am sure the GG can correct the little thing in future patches. At least I can still pop in KZ2 whenever I want.

The spawn nades where bad in KZ2! Im glad they got rid of them. I remember jumping in halfway through a mp match and just being holed up in your spawn point. That crap was horrible. Seems they copied Uncharted 2 spawning which I enjoy.

LMAO maxpontiac...yes you did. I could care less if Snipers attack spawn points, fact is everyone knows where the enemy is coming from. Very easy for Heleghast on Pyrrhus Crater to be hold up at base because ISA are keeping us in check. If one random member could escape and place a spawn bomb somewhere...matches would be more balanced and less about trying to capture the spawn point. Longer matches would fix this complaint really, but they don't exist. The point that they got rid of them irks me. Why? THis is the feature that made KZ2 great.

Spawn points sucked in KZ2 because no one would throw them in useful places. They were only worried about getting the medal for having people spawn there. Plus when GG took away the invincibility effect of spawning that lasted a couple seconds, it was way easier for the enemy to just slaughter you as you spawned. Then they could push you back to your main base, and you'd get spawn camped for the rest of the match. They practically ruined Radec's Academy for the Helghast because of that.

In KZ3 I've had no real camping problems at all so far. Its clear, to me at least, that this system is working better than KZ2's. Plus its a lot more fun to be a tactician when you're capturing spawn points, sometimes behind enemy lines. At least IMO.

I had KZ3 2 days after it came out but that is because of shipping. I was up last night till 3:30am playing the campaign, on veteran, and loved it. The story is alright but man the action is so much fun. I just beat the rest of it this morning and plan on going through on elite now. I like that playing it on veteran was challenging but not once did it piss me off unlike other games I played before cough..COD..cough.

The only real problem I was seeing was my idiot AI partners sometimes would run up into the action and get dropped or when they would stand next to me when I was down and say they couldn't reach me. Besides that it's an amazing game. Also been loving the online.

But since movies have really sucked in general the last 5-10 years, with a few exceptions here and there of course, I've stopped watching them and couldn't care less about who wins them anymore. Though it was nice to see The King's Speech win best picture tonight. Truly deserving.

Meh, I'll see the Oscar results later. Really doesn't interest me. There are good movies out there, but after watching most, I'm left feeling as though I've been personally insulted. I do usually wind up checking out most of the Oscar nominees, because they are generally quality films though.

KZ3, in spite of its apparent greatness, will have to wait for two reasons: 1. The hardest difficulty can be beaten in under 10 hours. That's just not right. And 2. Games in town are always overpriced. I mean, how can they get away with selling LBP1 for $110 STILL! I may be heading to the city next month to see The Waifs play live, so I'll pick it up then, hopefully after a $10-20 price drop.
Peace.

Had KZ3 since day 1 and I am about to begin my Elite playthru for the Platinum trophy. I only go for the Platinum on games that I enjoy and is also much more obtainable than Killzone 2. GG is definitely aiming for the masses with the changes they made. I miss the weight from the guns but have gotten used to it.

No doubt it is an excellent production but it could use a few tweaks here and there. Had a few issues and some freezes. Story was a 7 out on 10 in my book. If they create 4 they should make it a truly epic battle. The Helghans attempt to exact revenge with a full on surprise invasion of earth. Take humanity to the edge of extinction. Make us cry. If next time they could just be a little more attentive of minors parts in the story. Its the little details that affect the whole. But of course this is a shooter so many don't expect Oscar material. But imagine if they perfected the story? Its the only thing missing on my book.

I do hope that GG gets the sales they deserve for this game. It has also convinced some of my OCD COD friends to defect so that is quite an accomplishment.

As far as the Oscars I try to catch as much of it as I can. Who knows, games may be a viable category someday. If the industry doesn't go all social on us.

I really haven't had too much time to game this week because my 60 GB'er was down to less than a mere 1000 MB remaining so I wanted to wait for my new Hard Drive to get here.

Just received & installed my new 640GB drive finished the Trooper setting on SP mode Thurs or Fri, so I started re-playing it on Veteran & I'm about 1/4 the way through it.

I also want to jump into the MP for the 1st time (in a real game) and since I bought the Helghast Edition, I also got the super-voucher code for 2-times the XP & all weapons & abilities for the 1st 24 hours, so I've just got to pick a day I can settle in without anything else to do that will distract me from my 24 hour KZ3 missions.

Just have a little mercy on this MP n00b & make sure any head-shots you get, are of the more gentle, kinder, kind. LOL

BTW, that super-voucher's a pretty sweet deal, it also gives me that retro 2-map pack, a PS3 dynamic theme, the KZ3 soundtrack, & bonus video content giving the "behind the scenes" look at the making of the game.

As far as the Oscar's show , it's become a who's who fashion show, so I won't be watching it.

I just hope they keep the politics out of it & who ever deserves to win an oscar, wins it.

KILLZONE 3 is a good game. Ended up getting it for 1$... As I read a post before, I don't like the spawns... I liked making my own. Everytime I die I have to run up to the objective just to die again! LOL Making your own spawns is a lot better & fun. I wished the developers grew a pair & kept the weight. They should do what they think its best & not change it due to pressure from fans. Anyway, good game... very epic, awesome graphics. Really my only complaints are the weight, the spawns & that coward captain.

You could always become a tactician and capture spawn points then choose your spawns... And if you want longer matches, you could always pick Warzone or anything other than Bodycount.

Basically, all your complaints are just due to not enough experience with the multiplayer yet. You do know you can select your spawnpoint each time you die?

KZ3 was a disappointment for me.
far too short, and they improved almost everything i wanted them to improve but not much of it.
the mechs and jetpacks were cool but you so rarely get to use them.
i was so disappointed when i first saw a hig using the arc cannon, i killed him ran up and tried to pick it up but it would not let me.
so i thought oh well, will get to use it soon.
before i know it the credits are rolling and i still have not got a chance to use it!
WTF?
that was by far the best weapon in KZ2 and theve removed it?
why?
same with the bolt gun, in KZ2 if you shot a enemy they went flying so it was so easy to pin them to the wall, but now its really hard it hits them then they drop instead of sending them on a one way trip.
KZ4 needs a better story, new weapons and this time give us the arc cannon! and just longer.
when your finishing one of the industries biggest games, the ps3s flagship title in under 8 hours thats a serious problem!
for a cheap 3rd party game i could understand, but this is suppose to be the FPS of the generation!
again the hype has killed this game, people hype it to kingdom come and yet again another game falls well short of reaching it.

And they took away those awesome Helghast lightning grenades that powered up and spun in your hand before you threw them. What'd they replace them with? Grenades that look exactly like ISA grenades, except they leave a few sparks on the ground. KZ3, admittedly, has more variety, but KZ2 is the better overall game wehen it comes to the campaign. Absolutely gritty and tough as nails.

And as foul-mouthed(exploding heads are fine, but four letter words offend? Huh?)as it was, the story made absolute sense and had a clear beginning, middle, and end. Favorite part was when Garza died and they uncerimoniously rolled his casket into a corner with a bunch of others, then the second Sev starts to mourn his comrade, the alarms blare, the music starts, and Sev angrily punches the casket and gets ready to fight. There was nothing like that in KZ3 for me. No real emotion.Well, maybe when Narville was worried about the soldier not eating.

They casualized KZ3 with the controls and lower difficulty( sprinting with a rocket launcher that carries 30 rockets? Come on.). If this was any other game -FF13- heads would roll. But the fans want this to be better than COD SO much, they'll forgive the shortcomings. KZ2 was close to taking that crown. KZ3 is a step back.

i would not say a step back from KZ2 they improved allot, for example its no longer a cover shooter.
its much more open and varied.
they just did not have enough of it, they added everything i wanted but only in small doses.
like the jungle level thats one of my favorite levels, but only lasts like 10 minutes and thats it its over!
we needed more levels like that!
i cant believe im saying this but i actually prefer the levels from KZ2.
take the levels from KZ2, but add the features from KZ3 and thats the game KZ4 needs to be!
cant understand why but im finding myself wanting to go back and play KZ2.
maybe its just hind sight, everything is better in memory then it actually is.
its funny i wanted all these things changed, and now they are i kinda want it to go back the way KZ2 was.
the ending was far to anticlimactic, KZ2 ended with a bang and left the series open.
i was expecting a big finale, either a massive defeat or a massive victory, not taking a vessel down, avoiding the attack and bobs your uncle.
feels like the whole game your on a 200MPH train, then once the credits roll you hit a wall.
does not feel like a ending at all, honestly i feel like ive missed half the game!

There's a whole lot things KZ3 is doing that KZ2 wasn't doing. If KZ2 came out after KZ3 it would've definitely felt like a regression in several ways: lesser scale and scope of combat and battlefields, lesser weapon selection, lesser variety in locations, lesser player abilities, lesser enemy variety, lesser online, and no split-screen co-op. It even went the extra mile and added Move and 3D support.
KZ3 addressed and expanded upon every gameplay component any sequel should ever be expected to make. And for people to be so upset about what it didn't do needs to take a look in the mirror and ask themselves what's making them so dissatisfied about life that they've gotta harp on developers who work hard for your money but all the best you can do is spit in their face rather than say thank you.

It's not the fact that the game is horrible. Fact is the story is unoriginal, the ending is weak and the MP has been downgraded. Doesn't matter if they worked hard on this or not...preference is preference and in my opinion KZ3 didn't deliver anything special. The gameplay is solid and better than any FPS offered, but I expected more especially after the Story Trailer.

Just becasue a ugly guy works hard to get a girl doesn't mean she going to like him. Just because I work hard in the gym everyday doesn't mean I will elevate my game to Kobe status. Guerilla Games worked hard to impress me, but in the end...I'm not blown away, but I am satisfied to a certain extent. Fix the MP lag, custom matches and I will be more inclined to keep my copy of KZ3...lol

if that is true ill eat my hat i seriously doubt its him.
they improved on everything, expanded and changed and added everything i wanted.
but its cost the game its soul.
i enjoyed the levels in KZ2 more then i did KZ3, i think part of that is because KZ3s levels are so short and the overall campaign is so short.
i think the development time has really destroyed this, 50 bucks says 1 extra year in development and this game would of had the ambition of KZ2 and the scale of KZ3.
this has actually made me really optimistic for KZ4, GG have taken a massive step with this now all they need to do is hoan it properly and hopefully KZ4 will be the game KZ2 should of been!
hopefully!

I don't care much for Killzone, never have, but FPS's aren't my thing. The Ocasrs on the other hand is big as a student in film school. I am very happy to see Natalie Portman winning lead actress.

So far this year i have seen:
The King's Speech, 127 Hours, Black Sawn, True Grit and Biutiful. All have been fantastic, I'm very greatful to have seen them all in the cinema. Plus, it's making up for the lack of games released until the fall of this year.

I'll be getting KZ3 eventually here.

As for the Oscars, I'm majoring in audio production so the only awards I really cared about were the sound editing and original score. Glad to see The Social Network won for score, that's a good soundtrack.

Far too many complaints about KZ3. The only complaint I have as far as the campaign is the AI of your squad mate. They either can't keep up or can't be found..

I don't see how people complain about the length of the campaign either. It's simply idiotic if you ask me. There are games that have 4 to 5 hours total for campaign/story. Most games campaign/story are about 8 hours on average. In this generation of gaming we rarely get games that are 8+ hours..

To say this game isn't better then CoD is just ridiculous. The previous entries couldn't hold a candle to KZ2. The new entries can't hand a candle to KZ3..enough said..

btw..don't really watch award shows anymore..too scripted for me..well I should say awful scripting.

Well I'm guilty, but I honestly don't believe CoD is better than KZ2 or KZ3. KZ3 definetly plays better than KZ2, but too many military shooters have come out. Meaning it's hard for KZ3 to really capture the imagination when everything has been done before. Yeah KZ3 has some new on rail section, but personally...the last two are trial and error. The campaign is solid, but I can't help but feel dissappointed. After playing something as story oriented as ME2, KZ3 story feels weak.

Can't knock that...I have ME2 on 360 and have yet to play it so I can't really comment much on the story. I agree that stories from other games are better. It doesn't really take anything away from KZ though. I mean personally I like the Resistance story better but know KZ is the better game.

For me, I don't really judge the story off the newest entry. I look at the entirety of the story and from start to finish KZ has a good one..

I never played the first game, but KZ2 had a very well tuned story. KZ3 on the other had feels very unoriginal. The story should have been darker, more emotional, more nailbiting...but instead the story is all about action. This was Michael Bay material here.

Judging from what I've played and seen I think the story fits perfectly within the series thus far. We learn more about the Helghast and key figure heads of the Helghast. From the ISA we see what happened after KZ2, state of the ISA, and also get command being second guessed..

@FM23:

I don't mean to be a prick when I say this, but what KZ2 were you playing? Because when I played KZ2, I found a jumbled mess of a story with f-bombs being dropped like there was no tomorrow, character deaths that were either terribly scripted or emotionally unengaging (SPOILERS - Visari's death comes to mind - END SPOILERS), and an incredibly uninteresting cliffhanger of an ending (which is bad for any cliffhanger ending to be).

The story was completely focused on the petrusite crap, and all it really was was, "Hey, let's capture Visari! Oh no, they have a superweapon defense system, let's figure out how to destroy it! Yes, we shut the superweapon defenses down, let's capture Visari! Oh no, we accidentally killed Visari! END."

Even though KZ3 has a far more conventional and in some ways cliche story, its FAR better than that crap I saw in KZ2.

Never said KZ2 had a good story. But I was expecting a better story this time around. They produce a story, but it was far from original and a little to actiony for my taste. KZ2 wasn't perfect, but it was my first taste of something special...KZ3 didn't reach the series potential. Point is this series can't hide behind great gameplay any longer because I want good stories to go along with my games. KZ3 isn't a game based on this type of preference, so maybe my criticism isn't fair, but then again...if I don't like games like this then why would I find KZ3 story amazing. In my eyes, the campaign is no different then any other war game. Just an opinion. Doesn't matter how polished it is, if the story doesn't compel me then I don't care. KZ2 got away with this b/c it was my first go, but KZ3 doesn't get a past.

I'm glad to see that 74% don't care about The Academy Awards. I haven't watched any awards show in years and I don't plan to ever again. Why should I care about a bunch of ignorant, PR statement reading multi-millionaires getting worthless trophies? Why should I care about untalented singers taking advantage of a dumbed-down society obsessed with celebrities? Why should I care about these entertainers with their drug addictions, failed rehabs, vegan diets and attention whore mindsets? These shows have absolutely no use except to help give these people with the lowest self-esteem in the planet some.

These people are no better than I am. We're all human beings. I'm sick of seeing these spectacles.

That's all.

Well, I agree with a lot of what you said, but not all those people in these awards shows are bad. For instance, I'm pretty sure the people who won for Best Animated Short last night at the Academy Awards were not famous until that moment and did not come out worse for wear because of it.

Also, I think the Oscars are a bit more than "worthless." Sure, half the time some movies that win make you go, "What the hell were they thinking?" but mostly it shows what were the best movies of last year. That's the whole point of awards shows, to show the best of the best. Doesn't matter if we're all human, some humans are better at some things than other humans, and as long as they aren't arrogant pricks about it, I believe they should be given a chance to be recognized for that which makes them special.

Completely agree, I've been using the sharpshooter through the campaign and having a blast. I was having so much fun with the sharpshooter that I started throwing in the old "Move compatible" games to see how they worked out...Cabela's dangerous hunts is fun now and MAG is Friggin' Awesome! Especially with the 100% XP weekend that zipper was doing.

I still suck at online with the Sharpshooter, but I don't care, I'm having a blast learning.

I'm contemplating now of taking the Cabela's "Wii motion" gun that they made for the game and tearing it down. Maybe turn it into a move compatible gun somehow..because the pump action shotgun is still fun to use, it's just that the technology for the game sucked...

Killzone 3 has managed to break the hold Mass Effect 2 had on me. The Helghast have become my most favorite bad guy I like to mess up in video games between the Brutal Melee or picking up a flame thrower nothing gets old.

As for the Oscars other then the year I wanted to see if Heath Ledger won for playing The Joker I had no interest in the Oscars. Due to half these movies that are up for Oscars I haven't heard of them and that show runs way too long.

game addiction question: Have you played a game so much that you dreamed you were in the game? I had a dream few nights ago where my sister asked me did I want pizza for dinner? And before I said anything that circle option of answers from Mass Effect popped up it said 1. Hell no woman 2. Let me think about it and 3. I love to have some pizza for dinner and here's 10 bucks. So I picked 3 and ended up with 7+ paragon.

I maybe putting myself out there to be called a n00b, however I have a question:

I got the pre-ordered bonus content (retro mappack), entered in the code and installed it. When I go to multiplayer I can't seem to select the 2 maps as preferred....is there a "downloadable content" section I need to select that I'm just not seeing?

You have to select them in the "map selection" area then click the type of match you want and bam...your there. Salumen Market is for Warzone and Blood Gracht is for Guerilla Warfare.
