Fillion: I'm Okay With Wahlberg, And You Should Be Too
The bottom line is, we should probably just get over it.
As most gamers know, an Uncharted film is on the way; it's being directed by David O. Russell and will star Mark Wahlberg as treasure hunter Nathan Drake. When we first heard of the project, fans immediately noted that "Firefly" and "Serenity" star Nathan Fillion boasted a striking similarity to the Uncharted hero, in both looks and personality. But Russell and Co. wanted a superstar and you know, Fillion is just fine with that. During a Nerdist Podcast, Fillion says:
"You know I would love to have an Indiana Jones for me, that’s one of my greatest heroes of all time. You can’t fault a man for A. working with someone he’s worked with before, B. Mark Wahlberg, I think that’s a talented guy. I think he does great work, that guy and he a huge international star, which I am not. I am not. I will be.
So sure I would have loved it, but I can’t fault anybody for any of the choices they make. You’re gonna make a movie, make it the way you’re gonna make it and have a great time."
Yeah, okay. We'll let it go. But just for the record, that last bit in the first paragraph, where he says he's not an international star but he "will be," is exactly why we thought he'd be a great Drake. It's just the kind of thing Drake would say, isn't it?
Well, at any rate, we do have high hopes for the movie. And by the way, in case you missed it - and you might have; far too many did - "Firefly" is coming back to TV on the Science channel this month. Check it out; it was a great show.

YES!!! You tell them, Nathan! Seriously, I'm SOOO happy that Castle has been a hit because Fillion's deserved that kind of success for so long now. Everything he's done since Buffy and Two Guys and a Girl has been great (well... maybe with the exception of White Noise 2). If you're not watching Castle, you should really do so. It's the most fun show on television right now. Fillion rocks in it and Stana Katic is super gorgeous and talented.
Anyway, as for Fillion's remarks regarding Wahlberg, I've gotten over it. Wahlberg was funny in The Other Guys and as mad as I was with the casting when it was first announced, I've accepted it and moved on. I think Wahlberg can do good for the character and like Fillion basically said, Wahlberg's a superstar. As sad as it is to realize, the film will probably do better starring Wahlberg then it would've with Fillion.
With that being said, I will NEVER get over the fact that the script sounds like an absolute pile of horse$H!+. I'm kinda glad that Fillion isn't attached to something that sounds NOTHING like Uncharted.

Notice the full stop.
If I were you guys, I'd be concerned with the director right now... not the actor. Maybe you should IMDB Mr. Wahlberg... there's a lot of nominations for VERY prestigious awards and other less publicized awards from people who ACTUALLY understand and know what it takes to be a good actor.

Right now for me as underdog said, I'm very concerned with the director. I'm very concerned with where this movie will go. I'm almost convinced it will be about drake being a theif rather than a treasure hunter, in the movie. I'm very concerned for this movie as a whole, the video games and ND for letting things start to sound this out of control. I don't know why ND would let any of what's been said happen. It's not what the fans want. Hell it doesn't even sound like Uncharted! As you can tell I'm pretty concerned!

I agree. I think you're concerned for all the right reasons. I'm a little worried as well. I'm also predicting that when the direction and script fails, people will react like it's the actor's fault. lol! Ah well... can't be helped I guess.
I still stand by my comments a few months back that Mark will be great (should he be permitted to be great).

In my opinion, and I repeat, in my opinion, Mark Wahlberg sticks to one emotion (being angry) and sticks with it in every movie. He seriously is the dullest actor on the planet.

In a way, Mark reminds me of Shia LaBeouf. Who shouts his way through most of his movies. So predictable.
However, lets also consider this: If the movie is badly written and/or directed, it won't matter who plays whatever role in it.
Just consider how many movies are out there that waste good talent. You can surely think of a few of them.

If you do some research into nominations he's had outside of Hollywood, you'd see that he's been a part of less popular productions for which he has been nominated to the en'th degree. I'm talking productions and nominations that are outside of "Hollyweird". I doubt many have seen or heard of any of them (productions or awards). But many professionals in screenplay consider them the most important indicators.
True, I admit that his highest paid and most well known parts have been that angry Brooklyn dude, but if you dig deeper, you would find performances that are just stellar. I'm not gonna lie, though... if it was me... I'd take the type casting that pays multi-million dollars over the thought provoking and touching piece that'll pay me 80k/year.

If you want some non-new yorker roles, See "A Perfect Storm", "I Heart Huckabees", "Fear", "The Basketball Diaries"... there are other movies he did well in drama, but I didn't post them because they had a lot to do with either war or guns.
But, if you've seen "The Departed", that alone is enough to solidify the fact that he, in fact, CAN act. If you want a movie to see that he's genuinely fantastic in, that's a good starting point.
P.s. oh yeah... he's also had some success as a producer.

I don't care how many downvotes I get, I know I'm right.
No, if it flops, it's due to the direction and/or the production executives. The Sopranos? Really? I doubt the direction really has a handle on the Uncharted concept based on their comments.
Just remember... even if the actors (including Nathan Fillion) could NAIL the role of their own accord, it means nothing if the direction doesn't agree. They will inevitably have to go with the direction of the director. Actors are, afterall, just employees working under the director.
On the other hand, it's likely only the casting directors have really tried to grasp the story thus far. The actual movie director really doesn't need to fully understand it quite yet... at least not until they begin read-throughs.
Seriously, guys... there are indeed reasons to be concerned, but the acting is the last of them. Based on what we've heard so far, I'd worry about the script and that weird @$$'d Sopranos descriptor...

I LOVE the game but will have little interest in the movie... MW is cool and has made some good movies but NF is just RIGHT for the role of Drake in EVERY way!
Just looking forward to the next game in November...

As for Mark-E-Mark? He's made a few decent movies but he always plays the same character. I think I Heart Hukabees was his best performance which ironic since it's a David O Russell film. Hated that movie but I liked Walhburg in it. The Departed is by far his best film.

To think, I was just starting to like David O. Russel until he started talking about Uncharted. Now I'm starting to question him! :(

We groan when we hear of an Uncharted movie because we know it's going to be screwed up, but when you hear Wahlberg's the lead, you just know you're in for a poorly executed mess.
That being said, I'll probably see it for the lulz.

And if you're so great at analyzing an actor, where's your credentials? You do realize that a -nomination- alone is a huge honor? And he has won other awards that professionals consider more prestigious than the oscars?

Here's his rap sheet. The National Society of Film Critics award is one many consider to be more prestigious than the Oscars.
Look at the list... there's a crap load of big nominations. It isn't the same professionals nominating him time and time again, you know.

For my part, I consider Wahlberg a competent actor who fits well into certain roles. He reminds me of Robert Redford in that way. I wouldn't put either in the category of a Depp or Norton or Pacino, true genius actors who can quite literally become any character, but I think guys like Wahlberg have a place in films. It's just that certain gigs are extremely well suited for their particular style.
They may not have the range, but they have acting skill. And considering Uncharted, like most action movies, won't require much in the way of extreme performance agility and diversity, I think Wahlberg will be a good fit.
...still think Fillion is perfect for the role, though. ;)

Let's just hope the stupidity of that supposed script is a bunch of rumors, and the first trailer for the movie will be just like the games we know and love. That probably won't happen, but we can hope, right?

he clearly has no idea what uncharted is, and im worried this is going to turn out to be another mortal kombat film!
oh well, the sooner its over with, the sooner we can repress the memory and pretend it never happened like the last matrix film.
