DICE: Battlefield 3 Will Look Amazing On Any Platform
Battlefield has always been a great-looking series on both PC and consoles, and just because Battlefield 3 uses the fancy new Frostbite 2 engine doesn't mean any particular fanbase is going to suffer.
DICE Art Director Gustav Tilleby spoke during EA's press event at GDC, and ended up telling X360 magazine (as noted by NowGamer) that their Frostbite 2.0 engine allows them to be "a step beyond" their competitors." That much is obvious from the first few pieces of footage we've seen, but as those were rendered on high-end PCs, some were wondering if console gamers would get a slightly inferior version this time around. But nobody has to worry, says Tilleby:
"The positive thing is that the new rendering technique allows us to do more complex calculations at no extra cost. That’s the magic. The game will look very good, even on 360."
That last bit is going to prompt even more speculation; the gossip-hungry forums during GDC might want to interpret it two ways: 1. the 360 is less powerful (which of course it is, but most developers don't mention it specifically), and/or 2. for some reason, the PS3 version might actually be better than the 360 version. But we aren't going to read anything into that comment; the bottom line is that Battlefield 3 should look amazing, regardless of platform.

If I was a CoD fan I'd have a hard time settling on the PS3 version as it's noticeably a notch below it's competitor.

that awesome skyrim footage was all 360 footage with no mention of the ps3. crysis2 360 gets a sp demo. march 1st they get a mp demo, and we get promises of a demo coming later. ps3 is always back of the bus so to speak
it is a real stretch to take that quote as a compliment to the ps3. i can think of only a few mult plats that have come out better on the ps3. i have little faith in developer talk when they don't showcase the game with ps3 footage, or let alone mention the ps3.

In regard to the quote, I think he was saying "even on 360" as compared to the PC, as that was platform the demo was running off of as well as being the "lead platform" for the series.

I mean Guerilla have had to use some very interesting SPU techniques in order to offload the relatively weak RSX, using the CELL SPU's to assist in calculating the anti-aliasing algorithms and some of the post processing work, such as the full screen focus pulling effects etc.
Surely a multi-plat engine will struggle with this unless DICE have done engine "tweaks" for each respective platform. Time will tell... I know one thing... it will be a day 1 purchase!

Hopefully, whatever the technique is, it's something that can be shared with other developers so all games can have the benefits.
