Uncharted 3: The "Cerebral" Female Villain Revealed

Naughty Dog doesn't believe in rehashing anything, especially when it comes to villains.

It's time to visit the PlayStation Blog and learn about 3D gameplay in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, and the all new villain...or should we say, villainess. She - yes, she - is the central antagonist in the upcoming adventure, and her name is Katherine Marlowe. Say hello:

Marlowe is one dark, tough lady: she's "the coldly calculating leader of a secret society whose roots date back over four hundred years to the court of Queen Elizabeth I." On top of which, there's apparently a "long-standing rivalry" with Drake...see, they both think the ring of Sir Francis Drake is rightfully theirs. She's also "far more elusive and dangerous" than anyone Drake and Sully have faced in the past.

Yeah, she looks like a cross between Helen Mirren and Cruela DeVille, but that's okay. Every time we see something new from this game, we get goosebumps.

It may sound weird but I kind of like how they made Marlowe an older woman. I mean I like how they strayed away from making her some skin tight outfit wearing young woman with giant cleavage, like most games do for female characters. Nothing says evil like an old lady lol.

one of the biggest criticism (and only) of the last game was that lazarevic was too single demensional. The more they push the boundaries on how sinister the villain is, the better and darker I think uncharted can be. It looks fantastic, and this villian just from that 2 min spot looks like a character we can all get excited about. (Thank god she isn't the sterotypical female antagonist)

OK, some interesting information - background you might say.

Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh were of course famous explorers from the Elizabethan court. Christopher Marlowe was a member of the court, as a poet and associated with Sir Walter Raleigh. Here comes the interesting bit...

Christopher MARLOWE (as in Katherine Marlowe) was not only a contemporary of Drake, Raleigh and others, but he was reputedly recruited as a spy by none othe than Sir Francis Walsingham, Queen Elizabeth's spymaster...

And then there is this;

"He was amember of the secret society called "The School of Night" which was attended by fellow highly prominent Elizabethans - new beliefs were discussed and it is closely related to the mysterious Rosicrucian movement"

This information is from the following web page...

http://www.elizabethan-era.org.uk/christopher-marlowe.htm

Here's what Wiki has to say about the Rosicrucian Movement....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosicrucianism

This game is shaping up to be incredible, and full, and I mean FULL of intrigue and secrets and who know what else. Either way, it seems likely that Katherine Marlowe is related to Christopher Marlowe a Poet and spy from the Elizabethan court at the time of Drake and Raleigh. If that's not a good story, I don't know what is.

So it does not break the terms of service agreement we all have with Sony or the publishers? Getting a business permit for that won't be a problem. I was more concerned about being forced to close down by Sony. haha.

Since, I always buy brand new, what do I do with the online passes, beta codes and redeem codes that I do not use? I think that it might be illegal to sell them.

Whoa, hold on, I didn't say it was legal or not, I said it would depend on the local laws of your country. I used the example of DVD/BluRay rental because that is an established rental business model, and as far as I know game rental follows it closely. I'd strongly suggest actually working *with* Sony as a game rental service might encourage game purchasing much like happens here with Gamefly.

Each country is different, so brush up on your country's laws. Typically speaking, most major rental organizations have renting permits that allow them to transfer licenses temporarilly to legally use software. I have no clue how those agreements look in terms of how dollars are distributed or how you purchase such rights, but they exist.

I would be careful, just in case your business becomes insanely successful. If you end up making a lot of money, and it wasn't done by the book, gaming publishers, potentially represented by Nintendo, Microsoft, and/or Sony, could take you to civil court and sue for losses, thus getting your profits. If your business remaind small, they likely wouldn't care, but if you made, say millions, they would most certainly go for it if you do not have a rental agreement.

But it wouldn't be so illegal that you'd go to prison for it, I wouldn't think. It would be a civil suit if it did go to court.

I dunno... if it ends up working out really well for you, you might as well make sure you are protected. Just in case your idea hits the jackpot.

Kraygen,

What ND do sit just production values. It's the entire package. Comparing games across genre is notoriously difficult be cause we all have our genre bias. But within the genre of game that Uncharted inhabits, there is none to beat Uncharted 2 - yet. It looks like even if someone comes along and beat's uncharted 2, Uncharted 3 will once again grab the lead by the throat and not let go for a long, long time.

More than likely they're not going to explain their history with each other. That's what they've done in the previous games, and it also worked well in the Indiana Jones movies.

Also, explain to me how they didn't introduce the new characters properly in the last one please. You can't just post something like that without also posting the reason you think that.

I think it's because games have many times the duration of a movie. A typical movie lasting 90 minutes is at least 50% action (especially in this genre of story). that' leaves less than 45 minutes for story and character development/interaction. In a game, you have potentially dozens of hours of interactive entertainment on a single play through and multiple hours of cut scene to play with in terms of plot/character interaction. Using in-game animation and decent lip-sync, you can stretch things even further. Uncharted 3 might have several movies worth of story and character time in it's cutscenes and other 'character' moments. A game of this nature has more time with the viewer, and like a novel where the reader can re-read a chapter, the player can go back and replay a scene as desired. To me, this kind of thing allows a game to bridge the gap between a movie and a novel. Look at Heavy Rain for instance, it does exactly that. To me this is where one particular genre of story/character heavy game is headed. Story and character heavy JRPG/RPG games are cinematic in a different way since their primary game play mechanic is not the third person action/platformer. But still, they too appear to head in the same direction of being more than a movie, but not quite being a novel.

Yeah, I watched some of the Infamous2 footage recently. I think it was older footage though because it was still wussy Cole. God, even the voice was wussy...ugh! I need to put that out of my mind. Either way the action was awesome.

"the coldly calculating leader of a secret society whose roots date back over four hundred years"

As soon as I read that, I thought Hmm, Uncharted meets Assassin's Creed. Is Drake taking on the Templars this time around? lol

On a side note, did anyone else think that she looks a little like Martha Stewart?

Secret societies? Could it be this?

"The School of Night" which was attended by fellow highly prominent Elizabethans......is closely related to the mysterious Rosicrucian movement.

Why does the guy at the beginning look like Jason Statham? An the Kate resemble the lady from the Bond movies? Am i the only 1 who had this feeling an could this be like a setup for a movie to be made about this game considering the people already resemble real actors? Just an idea as i watched the video which seems amaaazing..

No, they tend to base the characters on real life people, thats why nate and sully are very similar to the real life counter parts. the characters are moddled of people merely for the point of making the game look good.

I agree with dirdiggler that one dude does favor Jason Statham.

Also I figured naughty dog would go with a younger villainess but I love them for changing things up. Let's go 11/2/11.
