GTAIV Nears 20 Million, Series Breaks 100 Million Worldwide

Even several years after its release, Grand Theft Auto IV continues to sell.

And now, publisher Take-Two Interactive has announced that GTAIV is closing in on the mammoth 20 million-sold plateau. We've stumbled upon a financial presentation posted by Wedbush Morgan, and that's where we find the 20 million stat: the crazy number represents global sell-in figures as of February 19, and also includes total sales of the "Complete" and "Special Edition." Furthermore, this means that all told, the GTA franchise has passed 100 million sold overall, which is mighty impressive. In other news, the Gearbox sci-fi shooter, Borderlands, has hit 4 million sold, and we're all wondering how well their next project, Duke Nukem Forever, fares. That bad boy drops in early May... The Red Dead Redemption update says the stellar Western-themed title sits at 8 million units, and the two Mafia titles have sold about 5 million units combined. Take-Two could be looking at yet another good year, as they continue to expand beyond the admittedly expansive GTA boundary.

By the way, we're still waiting on a GTAV announcement, which is rumored to be set in modern-day Los Angeles.

I'm playing the ballad of gay tony at the moment,like the way nico pops up in the side stories.

I'm done with GTA as a new game purchase, IV was top quality but kind of all sound and fury with little soul. GTAV? I'd rather clip my toenails... come to think of it I should get on that.

Well, I never got GTAIV... so I wouldn't mind getting GTAV... if it is anything like Red Dead... it will be amazing...

I think it just depends on what you're into Qubex. I really liked Red Dead but I couldn't stand GTAIV. The dialog was so obnoxious I had to turn it off within the first hour. I just don't see what's so great about glorifying a life of crime and gangsterism.

Most games these days glorify something that is wrong.

Heck the vast majority glorify killing.

Doesn't mean you dont detach yourself from it.

I think GTA IV showed a darker side of crime life tbh, I mean I don't think there was a single character who glorified being a criminal. I mean even the DLC I've played is pretty bleak. I actually liked the direction they took with it.

Jawknee, I dont see why people play CoD BO but they still do... I also dont see why the ISA want to destroy the helghast or the other way around. Whats the point of all these games releasing just like movies if you dont see a point in them? I greatly enjoy GTA because you get to jump in with your friends and have a blast online. Same with Kz3. As far as black ops I trully have no answer to that. Besides GTA IV is a 2008 game with one of the best engines, euphoria. Its a lil outdated but its still selling well and its a great game if you give it a chance.

I think the Helghast space Nazis attacked Earth in Killzonee 1 or something, I dunno I heard it wasn't so great so I didn't play it.

GTA IV was great. Tons of missions and Nico wasn't trying to be a gangster nor involved in the mafia. Dialogue was realistic given the situations in the game.

As mentioned, the use of the Euphoria engine is what really set this game apart. Nothing happens the same way.

BTW...the ISA defeated the Helghast in the first war. So KZ 1 shows the Helghast invading Vekta in a return attack so to speak...KZ1 was simply underrated and unappreciated by some.

It takes a great game to reach sales numbers like this. Rockstar should be proud of what they've accomplished. They've brought maturity to gaming and they've brought westerns to gaming. They're even backing some crazy 1940s detective game. Glad to see their efforts don't go unrewarded.

That's an excellent number sold. Unfortunately, it also makes it seem as though GTA has lost its long held throne of sales dominance. Black Ops nailed 14 million in the U.S. alone. Factor in worldwide sales, and it has to be very close to, if not in excess of, 20 mil.

Either way, still phenomenal numbers for Rockstar and Take-Two. Can't wait to see L.A. Noire, Agent and the next GTA. It's about time to pull it out of the hat.

I ruined GTA4 for myself by watching a crap-ton of vids before I got it (a year after). It was my first PS3 game so you can understand how excited for it I was. I recall it being amazing, but, now that I'm more in-the-know of gaming, I can see that it really wasnt that great. GTA4 in 1080p really is FUGLY. Woah, motion blur everywhere and choppy framerate! How did I not notice this in the first place!? Plus I see the story is actually kinda boring, and I don't feel compeled to do ANY side-missions. However my second ever PS3 game was RE5, and I seriously loved that game. I must've spent 300 hours total playtime in just 1 year, which back then (when I wasn't really a 'hardcore' gamer) was ALOT. It's probably that game that sucked me into the world of playstation. {First time playing online co-op was so ridciously fun..}
