Dark Souls Director: The Most Difficult Game Possible

You know how everyone was complaining about the difficulty in Demon's Souls?

Well, as far as developer From Software is concerned, those complaints fell on deaf ears. In fact, director Hidetaka Miyazaki says that rather than making the follow-up title easier, he plans to make Dark Souls even harder. This is enough to make even the most hardcore of gamers shiver and shudder, but it's true; he told Edge his diabolical plans:

"I have no intention to make the game any easier. In fact, I want it to be more difficult. The way I put it to my team is that we are trying to make the most difficult game it is possible to make, which at the same time can be conquered by those who persevere. It has to be firm, but fair."

We want any player to be able to clear any obstacle simply by learning from mistakes and paying close attention. Then, the reasons for failure must always be clear and understandable. Every problem must have multiple solutions, so players can tackle it in whichever way they want."

He goes on to say the controls can never be a difficulty generator, and that's something every critic knows: a challenge is one thing, a cheap challenge is something else altogether. And we have plenty of faith in these guys; they'll undoubtedly deliver a polished product. The only question is whether or not you can handle it...

Interesting, I like that. Actually, I like that a lot. I like it when games expect you to be intelligent about your decisions when clear signs are given for you to overcome.

'sigh' am I gonna have to break down and get Demon's Souls eventually, so I can be on board with Dark Souls?
Looks that way.. but I'm swamped with games right now so I've got time until then.

It requires focus, and thinking before you take the move, other wise you'll die. I like it to be hard instead of easy and not very rewarding.

@World you're just taking the easy way out by quitting. =/

Well thank you. I guess I just lost that need, but there's definitely something to be said for that feeling you get when you beat some jerk boss that has been kicking you around for days so you stand up and yell "Yeah, take that you fu*king b*tch!"

Getting to that point isn't much worth the hassle to me anymore though.

honestly once you learn the mechanics and the monsters, most of the game isn't that hard. The final boss is by far the worst, but a lot of the boss' have tricks that you can use to manipulate them into a less difficult victory.

Also if you really don't want a challenge, but want the experience, there is a way to cheat the final boss, it would make it the lamest final boss battle ever, but if you're not looking for a challenge it is there.

I liked that, world =)

I think there's too much controversy now over this matter for me to not take interest. I need to go get the game and find out for myself =)

Though, what I do find interesting is my bro's opinion. He didn't really lament that the game was all that hard. In fact, he beat it relatively quickly. Though, he is something of a "natural" with these game types, much more than me.

i totally agree with you about the game not being all that difficult like some make it out to be. Human error made it seem difficult, like swing huge weapons in small corridors or blocking too much and running out of stamina.

nowhere near as impossible as some made it out to be

It's an open world format though. If it didn't have checkpoints, you'd have to play the entire game in one sitting. :O

Of course, I'm presuming that you aren't able to save the game at will, which I get the feeling you won't able to do, as that would make the game easier, rather than harder.

I think it would make it easier if you could save anywhere Lawless, I bet it's going to be like Demon's Souls, but they have checkpoints where you can put the Beacon down (if you can put it down anywhere, i think you can) and you will go to that spot until you can pass through and get to the save area.

But i don't know how it's going to be but that's just a guess. I still don't know how the Beacon will be used and how many times you can use it, or how the mechanics will be.

Bought it, got nowhere in 3 days, sold it. I make no apologies. The payoff wasn't worth the effort. I had to ask myself "Why am I still playing this?" a lot of times. I just don't need the perceived accolades for gamer skill by being able to tell people who bemoan the difficulty that I whooped the game and hey I didn't think it was that hard even. That does nothing for me.

well in a sense isn't every game driven by a mistake mechanic. Like I'm sure that if you ran into a room filled with bad guys in COD trying to stab all of them you would die and say to yourself "that was a mistake I won't do that again" or if your playing final fantasy and you go after a boss without any healers in your party and you die I'm sure you will recognise your mistake and do it again the other way. Hell even in god of war when you are going in to rip out a cyclops eye and it says press "O" but you accidently press "X" is that not a mistake? There is nothing different about Demons Souls. If you run into a room hoping to quickly stab everyone you might just die because of your rush tacktics. If you go after a boss without the proper healing potions you might not survive that fight. The only thing that is different in demons souls from other games is that it makes you spawn at the beggining of the world after you die. However most shortcuts and other things you have done to make the world more easy to traverse still remain

Hardcore mode isn't difficult. You just have to play for about 3 hours at a time. Getting to your first save at about Chapter 6 or 7 is the hardest part.

And alot of people "cheat" by using their suit they got with the preorder of the special edition, or buying one of the DLC packs. That starts you off with at least 15 spaces in your inventory and +armor. They also come with weapons so you can start the game with the force gun or contact beam....either of which will decimate most necromorphs.

And that was a challenge I was willing to accept because it forces you to NOT DIE....unlike Demon's Souls which forces you to die to learn from your mistakes. I hate dying....

Demon's Souls doesn't necessarily force you to die to learn. That's why you focus on the surroundings and think, learn the enemies pattern and watch out for traps, pitfalls.

It's pretty easy once you learn the mechanics of the game, and it gets a bit easier. It's fun playing with friends as well.

That does worry me a little bit. I haven't experienced Demon Souls yet, partly because I read and heard multiple times it was a very difficult play through.

The problem I have is that the time I have free to play is not much. I have to approach game playing casually, and that is why I enjoy FPS's and multilayer - gives me a quick fix for twitch gaming syndrome.

Saying that, there are some innovative titles like the said Dark Souls, Last Guardian and ICO etc which require more thought and time. I can make time if necessary but it will be a tough call. If Dark Souls is too difficult it could sit on my shelf for months.

We'll see what the reviews say anyway; and importantly, what the community at PsXeXtreme say as well...

Demons -

Hey bud you shold not let that discourage you from playing this game. Demon Souls is a little hard but only to those that give up on it. It has levels that can be played similiar to a FPS game. In the since that each world can be done with in about an hour or two. I don't know if that fits your definition of twitch but for me that isnt long. Sure it could take you 6 months to beat it at an hour a day. But unilike most RPG the story is pretty light and the levels are easy to remember how to beat once you figure it out. Good luck!

My point exactly this game makes you think guys. You are not going to pass the levels in the modern since of gaming. This requires a little old school thinking or just some patience and perserverence.

I tell you that both the dragon on the bridge and the giant knight are both easy to beat once you figure out what to do. And trust if you stuck with it and finally figured it out you would have felt more rewarded than most all games that come out today.

Both of you should try again and get past your first impressions. Crap if all else fails at least go online and check to see if someone posted a walktrouhg before you give up on a game.

lol, I patiently killed that dragon nice and early. Once I got to the first place on the bridge, I made my way to the top. I bought a TON of arrows, and each pass he made, I'd shoot him. Occasionally I'd use magic. Got a ton of souls nice and early in the game! It took like.. well I don't remember but I wanna say 200 shots or so.

@Jawk
That big knight was easy with my strategy. Get up on the escarpment, take out the archers, and use the escarpment for cover while taking range shots at him. He'll fall without you ever being hit.

I understand your frustration, but demon souls is so much more than redoing that the same thing over again. It actually serves the purpose of the game to die. Because being a ghost or shadow whatever you call it, is in itself a new experience. Not to mention you can go to the place you died and get your body back as long as you dont die again. I agree with not having a game be to repetitive but in the case of demon souls i disagree because it works with the game not against it. My opinion and hey maybe demon souls is not your thing which is cool too!

I so much love this director, i just love this guy, and love his thinking logic, make it hard, make it the hardest and I will try to find a way to conquer it, and i am turned on by that and I will play through it by dying 1000 times or 10000 times, and I will play through it numerous times to make it finally a cake walk, like what I did with the demon's souls at soul level 328. I can not be happier to have a game like that.

I am so convinced about this director in that he is against the trend and against the odds to make it harder rather than easier, risking it so it may sell less rather than sell more, but still doing the way he wants, for that, I respect and admire and support that. This is what the gaming world and developers should do -- make the game the way you want, not the way you can sell it.

Truly, this game and The Last Guardian will contain all my heart and souls for gaming in this year or the next!

Yeah that is a sad note about atlus not having the plublishing rights to this game. And will hold some reservations against dark souls untill i see it first hand. Not worried about multiplatform per se but then again this game means alot and From Software has a soft place in my heart, here's hoping ban dai does not screw it up.

im glad he's come out and said this. why should they cater to some people who played a small portion of it and thought it was too hard?

I don't remember too many people complaining that the game was too hard, more like loving the challenge it presented. When you die on Demon's Souls, its human error. i don't remember a single time i thought 'well that was a pretty cheap kill, thanks From Software'

Demon's souls was responsible for my slight delay in beating Uncharted 2 when it first came out, not many games can do that for me

Nice one with using uncharted and demon souls in the same sentence. Two of the greatest games to ever grave the PS3. Totally agree with you no cheap kills in this game even though some hard charging, kill em all, gung ho gamer's will cry and say so!

Screw all the petty differences and arguments. Japan has been hit by a 8.9 magnitude Earthquake and there are Tsunami waves sweeping the coast. Waves upto 10 meters (30+ feet) have been reported, and the TV coverage has been humbling. People are dying. My thoughts and prayers are with Japan and the nations of the pacific rim. If you're reading this and in that area, there are Tsumani on the way, if you're near the coast, check your local media for warnings.

Suddenly, the games don't matter so much.

Indeed. Sometimes we all must remind ourselves that regardless of nationality, ethnicity, economic or social standing or faith, we are all frail humans on a fragile world and it only takes seconds to tear our world away from us. I think we need more fellow feeling and less division over nothing but vanity.

Taiwan is about to be hit by the waves, the Philipines will be soon, and Hawaii a few hours later. The whole west coast of the US and north west Mexico is also under Tsumani warnings or watches. Everybody needs to watch closely in case the waves maintain their strength.

I saw that earlier and thought that it was absolutely tragic. I've worked with quite a few people from Japan over the last couple of years, and come to become very good friends with them. I only hope that they are alright. My thoughts and prayers go out to anyone affected by this.

The tsunami warning is also in place for the east coast of Australia, and if it hits... I don't even want to think about it.

Man... that's so messed up. Life sure is that weird and uncertain.

I hope they're ok over there. If there's one country that can handle it it's Japan.

Still, just hope they're ok and get through it.

Interestingly Kazunori Yamauchi was recently talking about how he thinks a lot about life/death and all the philosophy behind it. Life really is weird.

True Story,

Cannot believe I am telling this but it has to be done. I bought Demon's Souls and fell in love. Was it hard HELL YES! Just when you think you have that boss figured out and you think you are going to easily beat him you don't! You have to start that entire chapter over again. Do you learn from your mistakes yes! You are FORCED to learn from your mistakes OR ELSE! :) Anyway, I got to the end of the game and fought the False King. How can I say this, impossible is the word that comes to mind. I fought him 30 times and was killed every time. One time I got him down to 5% health only to get a little excited and got to close for him to SOUL SUCK from me!!!!! This soul sucking makes your character weaker until you gain the level back by the way!!! I got so frustrated that I quit the game and deleted all my data having to do with Demon's Souls!! ALL DATA, including my saved games in just a matter of seconds!!! I had put in nearly 40 hours by this point! Literally 30 minutes later I was like oh sh*t what have I done!! OMFG!!!! That was one of the worst days of my gaming life. To have poured my life into Demon's Souls and then deleted it in a second because I was mad and frustrated. That night my son went to bed early because he hadn't taken a nap. I started to play again. I kept playing and I learned and I learned. I found out that night that Demon's Souls isn't just a game it's a language. Once you understand the combat you can get pretty good at it....and I got very good at it! I kept on going and in no time at all I was back at the False King again. I won't say anymore about what I learned about the False King and my load out since I don't want to give spoilers. But I ended up beating him finally. What a great day it was! Darkness to full-on God rays!! I stood up and reached high in the sky and yelled YES!!! Demon's Souls is not just a game it is a phenomenon. It taught me some valuable lessons about frustration. I am 40 years old, you would think I would know this already. But I made a mistake and paid for it dearly! Thankfully, the 2nd play through was better because I learned. Demon's Souls is one of the best games I have ever played. Never before has a game become such an important part of my life. Anyway, to keep a long story short, to late, bring on Dark Souls!! :)

However I did read it all and I have to say that this pretty much sums up the entire DS experience. I haven't gone as far as to delete everything but I will get obscenely frustrated and not play for a week or so.

I am the same way and understand what you are saying. However Demon's Souls isn't difficult anymore once it is learned. I have no problems with Demon's Souls now. I was actually thinking about going for my Plat once we get close to Dark Souls release. I think what the devs are saying is great! Every obstacle will have many ways around it. But it is up to the player to find those paths. Dark Souls will be a new language to learn but once you learn it, it will become second nature. I applaud these devs. My only worry is that it is being developed for the Xbot as well. Oh well, they deserve all the money they can get.

Top 3 game of this generation, next to MGS4 and Uncharted2.

Demon's Souls is a true testament to everything that's good about games and the possibilities presented in our current generation.

Even the story and the whole plot behind the game gives you chills once you understand what is TRULY going on, heh.

I'm telling you, I will put Uncharted 3 on the shelf if I to. I will probably play Dark Souls all day.

Great news all around, was a bit worried that they'd dumb down the game to try to bring in new people.

Hidetaka's great, I like his vision about how the Demon's/Dark Souls world should be. It's not a work in the park.

Great direction. Gotta love someone who stands firm on the direction their fans loved them for. Kudos.

And won't be getting this probably. I don't have the patience, time nor the inclination for these type of games. I've never played Diablo nor any online MMORPG (not sure if its proper to call Demon's Souls an MMORPG tho).

Nah, AnonWTF. That's the whole point of Demon's Souls and the new game. You separate the hardcore gamers from the lucky and "easy" mode finishers who blab too much on finishing the game. This is why accomplishing tasks here is a personally more fulfilling experience. Tho I never was one to really get into that prestige of finishing tough games.

Bring on the pain I say. Games have become way too easy over the past 1-2 decades. As long as the difficulty is in the game design, and not just cheating AI.
