Dark Souls Director: The Most Difficult Game Possible
You know how everyone was complaining about the difficulty in Demon's Souls?
Well, as far as developer From Software is concerned, those complaints fell on deaf ears. In fact, director Hidetaka Miyazaki says that rather than making the follow-up title easier, he plans to make Dark Souls even harder. This is enough to make even the most hardcore of gamers shiver and shudder, but it's true; he told Edge his diabolical plans:
"I have no intention to make the game any easier. In fact, I want it to be more difficult. The way I put it to my team is that we are trying to make the most difficult game it is possible to make, which at the same time can be conquered by those who persevere. It has to be firm, but fair."
We want any player to be able to clear any obstacle simply by learning from mistakes and paying close attention. Then, the reasons for failure must always be clear and understandable. Every problem must have multiple solutions, so players can tackle it in whichever way they want."
He goes on to say the controls can never be a difficulty generator, and that's something every critic knows: a challenge is one thing, a cheap challenge is something else altogether. And we have plenty of faith in these guys; they'll undoubtedly deliver a polished product. The only question is whether or not you can handle it...

Also if you really don't want a challenge, but want the experience, there is a way to cheat the final boss, it would make it the lamest final boss battle ever, but if you're not looking for a challenge it is there.

I liked that, world =)
I think there's too much controversy now over this matter for me to not take interest. I need to go get the game and find out for myself =)
Though, what I do find interesting is my bro's opinion. He didn't really lament that the game was all that hard. In fact, he beat it relatively quickly. Though, he is something of a "natural" with these game types, much more than me.

Of course, I'm presuming that you aren't able to save the game at will, which I get the feeling you won't able to do, as that would make the game easier, rather than harder.
Peace.

But i don't know how it's going to be but that's just a guess. I still don't know how the Beacon will be used and how many times you can use it, or how the mechanics will be.

It doesn't have checkpoints at will. Beacons are scattered about the world by developers and it's your checkpoint when you find one. No different to the checkpoints on Demons Souls.
World, C'mon. My bro has got a kid, full time job and is 39 and conquered Demons Souls and hailed it as the best RPG of the gen. You got no excuse on a FRESH and skillful way of playing a genius game.

Call an aid at every boss and you'll have a 90% chance at winning. Study the level, same thing. It was fair and well developed. I had no trouble when i figured it out.
Well, does criticising a beloved game do it for you instead? :P

And alot of people "cheat" by using their suit they got with the preorder of the special edition, or buying one of the DLC packs. That starts you off with at least 15 spaces in your inventory and +armor. They also come with weapons so you can start the game with the force gun or contact beam....either of which will decimate most necromorphs.
And that was a challenge I was willing to accept because it forces you to NOT DIE....unlike Demon's Souls which forces you to die to learn from your mistakes. I hate dying....
Clamedeus
Friday, March 11, 2011 @ 11:42:21 AM
Demon's Souls doesn't necessarily force you to die to learn. That's why you focus on the surroundings and think, learn the enemies pattern and watch out for traps, pitfalls.
It's pretty easy once you learn the mechanics of the game, and it gets a bit easier. It's fun playing with friends as well.

The problem I have is that the time I have free to play is not much. I have to approach game playing casually, and that is why I enjoy FPS's and multilayer - gives me a quick fix for twitch gaming syndrome.
Saying that, there are some innovative titles like the said Dark Souls, Last Guardian and ICO etc which require more thought and time. I can make time if necessary but it will be a tough call. If Dark Souls is too difficult it could sit on my shelf for months.
We'll see what the reviews say anyway; and importantly, what the community at PsXeXtreme say as well...

Hey bud you shold not let that discourage you from playing this game. Demon Souls is a little hard but only to those that give up on it. It has levels that can be played similiar to a FPS game. In the since that each world can be done with in about an hour or two. I don't know if that fits your definition of twitch but for me that isnt long. Sure it could take you 6 months to beat it at an hour a day. But unilike most RPG the story is pretty light and the levels are easy to remember how to beat once you figure it out. Good luck!

But Demon's Souls can be conquered with ease once you realize you have a vast amount of freedom over your eneimes. Stealth, spells, miracles, regenation, magic weapons, fire weapons, range weapons, armour, and summoning people are all out there.

I tell you that both the dragon on the bridge and the giant knight are both easy to beat once you figure out what to do. And trust if you stuck with it and finally figured it out you would have felt more rewarded than most all games that come out today.
Both of you should try again and get past your first impressions. Crap if all else fails at least go online and check to see if someone posted a walktrouhg before you give up on a game.

That big knight was easy with my strategy. Get up on the escarpment, take out the archers, and use the escarpment for cover while taking range shots at him. He'll fall without you ever being hit.

i enjoy hard games, but where it pisses me off and makes me leave is when you have to redo so much ground.
if i have already done something why should i have to redo it again because i died?
thats not challenging, thats just frustrating and time wasting!
games should be hard by the difficulty, not because every time you die you have to replay half the frigging game!

I am so convinced about this director in that he is against the trend and against the odds to make it harder rather than easier, risking it so it may sell less rather than sell more, but still doing the way he wants, for that, I respect and admire and support that. This is what the gaming world and developers should do -- make the game the way you want, not the way you can sell it.
Truly, this game and The Last Guardian will contain all my heart and souls for gaming in this year or the next!

I don't remember too many people complaining that the game was too hard, more like loving the challenge it presented. When you die on Demon's Souls, its human error. i don't remember a single time i thought 'well that was a pretty cheap kill, thanks From Software'
Demon's souls was responsible for my slight delay in beating Uncharted 2 when it first came out, not many games can do that for me

Taiwan is about to be hit by the waves, the Philipines will be soon, and Hawaii a few hours later. The whole west coast of the US and north west Mexico is also under Tsumani warnings or watches. Everybody needs to watch closely in case the waves maintain their strength.

I hope they're ok over there. If there's one country that can handle it it's Japan.
Still, just hope they're ok and get through it.
Interestingly Kazunori Yamauchi was recently talking about how he thinks a lot about life/death and all the philosophy behind it. Life really is weird.

Cannot believe I am telling this but it has to be done. I bought Demon's Souls and fell in love. Was it hard HELL YES! Just when you think you have that boss figured out and you think you are going to easily beat him you don't! You have to start that entire chapter over again. Do you learn from your mistakes yes! You are FORCED to learn from your mistakes OR ELSE! :) Anyway, I got to the end of the game and fought the False King. How can I say this, impossible is the word that comes to mind. I fought him 30 times and was killed every time. One time I got him down to 5% health only to get a little excited and got to close for him to SOUL SUCK from me!!!!! This soul sucking makes your character weaker until you gain the level back by the way!!! I got so frustrated that I quit the game and deleted all my data having to do with Demon's Souls!! ALL DATA, including my saved games in just a matter of seconds!!! I had put in nearly 40 hours by this point! Literally 30 minutes later I was like oh sh*t what have I done!! OMFG!!!! That was one of the worst days of my gaming life. To have poured my life into Demon's Souls and then deleted it in a second because I was mad and frustrated. That night my son went to bed early because he hadn't taken a nap. I started to play again. I kept playing and I learned and I learned. I found out that night that Demon's Souls isn't just a game it's a language. Once you understand the combat you can get pretty good at it....and I got very good at it! I kept on going and in no time at all I was back at the False King again. I won't say anymore about what I learned about the False King and my load out since I don't want to give spoilers. But I ended up beating him finally. What a great day it was! Darkness to full-on God rays!! I stood up and reached high in the sky and yelled YES!!! Demon's Souls is not just a game it is a phenomenon. It taught me some valuable lessons about frustration. I am 40 years old, you would think I would know this already. But I made a mistake and paid for it dearly! Thankfully, the 2nd play through was better because I learned. Demon's Souls is one of the best games I have ever played. Never before has a game become such an important part of my life. Anyway, to keep a long story short, to late, bring on Dark Souls!! :)

However I did read it all and I have to say that this pretty much sums up the entire DS experience. I haven't gone as far as to delete everything but I will get obscenely frustrated and not play for a week or so.

Demon's Souls is a true testament to everything that's good about games and the possibilities presented in our current generation.
Even the story and the whole plot behind the game gives you chills once you understand what is TRULY going on, heh.
I'm telling you, I will put Uncharted 3 on the shelf if I to. I will probably play Dark Souls all day.
Great news all around, was a bit worried that they'd dumb down the game to try to bring in new people.
Hidetaka's great, I like his vision about how the Demon's/Dark Souls world should be. It's not a work in the park.

Interesting, I like that. Actually, I like that a lot. I like it when games expect you to be intelligent about your decisions when clear signs are given for you to overcome.
'sigh' am I gonna have to break down and get Demon's Souls eventually, so I can be on board with Dark Souls?
Looks that way.. but I'm swamped with games right now so I've got time until then.
