PSXE Poll Update: Dragon Age II Won't Appeal To Everyone

Role-playing remains a niche genre in comparison to the mainstream titles that are so common these days.

But we were flattered to see so many people who wanted to see our video commentary before making a decision, and we hope the full text review assisted in your purchase decision as well. The majority of those interested in the game certainly wanted to hear our take on the highly anticipated sequel, so we'll just keep plugging away on our video content, if you don't mind. We try to put some effort into them, too. At any rate, the game turned out well for most, although the hardcore RPG followers remain confused: it still doesn't qualify as a straight hack 'n slash action/RPG, but what BioWare did remove is still strange...and vexing. No world map through which we can wander and explore? No equipment besides accessories and weapons for party members other than our main character? Fewer overall abilities? A little sad, true, but we still like the game, and we still recommend it (with a caveat or two).

Speaking of our YouTube Channel, we're wondering what you might want to see next. The video commentaries will continue, but we're not sure there's anything between now and L.A. Noire that deserves that attention. What else might you want from us? Please bear in mind that we have one more big announcement that relates to video, but it can't be unveiled just yet...  Other ideas?

I would like to maybe see Crysis 2 or Homefront even I know the latter would be kind of challenging since it's coming Tuesday.

I'm interested in Crysis 2, MK, Motorstorm: Apoc, and Infamous 2. I'm not interested in LA Noire.

I think you should stick to games reviews on video simply cause that's when watching a video image is of interest (to see gameplay). It's a lot of work to create such a video snippet, and those working hours are better spent on other content except for video reviews (in my humble opinion of course).

And most important, still, is the written reviews.

Lovin me some Dragon Age II, but it is kind of strange that one would just cut out lots of the good things that just make sense to keep. Stop stripping down my RPGs you crazy people! Still though, anyone who says its just a hackfest has lost their mind.

As far as the video stuff goes I can't imagine what you have up your sleeve that could be so big. Game news while skydiving?

Sometimes I wonder if RAM is part of the issue. RPG's can gobble up quite a bit of memory because of their complexity (menus, config screens, customizable character and equipment, cinematics, gameplay etc) . Perhaps that graphics upgrade caused concessions for things like world maps and a more detailed armor system.

I would agree with you except that Bioware also makes Mass Effect, which is twice as good graphics wise and probably has as many menus.

Perhaps it's a different group of people with a different set of tools within Bioware who make this and Mass Effect? Not sure, just a guess.

If it were due to concessions for graphics I would rather have back the gritty dirty look of the first one and have my rpg-ness back.

I think video commentary in the form of editorials would be nice once in a while. When you pull in examples of gaming, it would be neat to actually show what you mean.

Ben, just one point on the commentary videos. It would be good to boost the volume of the inline audio. Laptop speakers and other small device-based speaker systems usually don't have boosting features unless specific software is installed. Sometimes the video players also struggle to boost the audio, so it would be great if you could record the audio a little louder.

Also, depending on how you talk, sometimes I can't hear clearly what you say when your voice dips. Voice volume increases and then softens. Once this audio balance is corrected, or the general volume is louder, it will be great at my end.

Additionally, when controlling the camera on screen; whilst during normal game playing camera movement can be jerky, understandably so, when talking about graphics and environments specifically it would be great if you could gently pan around slowly to show detail.

In some cases it would be great to walk up close to walls and objects and show texture detailing and shadowing to see how the engine is coping.

Just some thoughts...

Thing is, I don't sense any volume problems on my end. And I'm using crappy speakers.

Ok, I will check my settings again. I will play the commentary video again or try my head phones and see if that helps. It really could be my laptop speakers then. I am using a Dell.

I know what he's talking about, on my laptop, even with the volume all the way up it can be hard to hear.

For some reason vista will not let me mess with my sound other than turning up/down the volume.

I want gameplay vids where the psxe staff proves a point.

For example, let's say you're trying to compare what you think was good with a certain genre. Using gameplay footage to compare them would be interesting.

I think footage that is used to spark a discussion is better than the regular review vids.

Might take more time to put that footage together, but I think it's better.

Not interesting in Dragon Age at all. Give me my jrpg (White Knight Chronicles 2), can't wait!

Don't care about LA Noire either. The theme looks boring/doesn't appeal to me.

I'd like to see something on Homefront or maybe Crysis 2 since I'm buying Homefront D1. Crysis is the one game that I think is just very questionable.

Lack of emotion...

It all just feels so superficial when it comes to western rpgs.

Purely subjective, but that's how I feel about it.

Dragon Age II appeals to me, but Bioware's method of releasing DLC that is, price-wise, equivalent to the main game makes me think it's better to to simply wait for GotY/Complete Editions of their games. And I'm cool with that.

As for the videos, definitely keep them coming. As for future games, maybe Yakuza 4, Motorstorm: Apocalypse, SOCOM and PSMove Heroes before L.A. Noire. But you MUST do one for Team Bondi's guaranteed gem.

Also with the videos, expand away, BUT don't let it take away from the fantastic, and frequent editorials and updates here.
Peace.

Not sure if it will be out before or after l.a. noire, but that is my biggest interest of the year, so that's where I'm at.

I like the game vids, but I don't think I would take the time to watch videos that weren't about games, I just don't think it would be a priority to me.
