Annual BAFTAs Honor Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2, GoWIII

You know, as Heavy Rain continues to receive various awards, we admit to sensing a tiny thread of vindication in giving Quantic Dream's gem co-Game of the Year 2010.

After receiving numerous honors at the annual AIAS and NAViGaTR award ceremonies, Heavy Rain is once again on the lips of critics: the BAFTA (British Academy Video Game Awards) results are in: in addition to the stellar Mass Effect 2 landing Best Game honors, Quantic Dream's story-driven interactive drama won in the Technical Innovation, Story, and Original Music categories. By the way, if you're wondering why Red Dead Redemption isn't on any of the lists, it's because Rockstar didn't submit their game for consideration. It had a shot at the public-voted Best Game award but unsurprisingly, it lost out to Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Other notables: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood took home the Action prize, Artistic Achievement went to God of War III, Super Mario Galaxy 2 won Gameplay, and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit may have been an upset winner in the Multiplayer category. Man, these games sound awfully familiar...they sound a lot like the games we loved most in 2010, and the titles our readers tended to enjoy the most. Times may be changing, but it still remains true that many of the best interactive productions are also the most popular. Bring on L.A. Noire!

Quantic Dream truly deserves such attention to their title (Heavy Rain).

I hope they will release something like that some time later.

Way to go Heavy Rain. This professional writer couldn't play past brushing your teeth:

“I just thought, I’m not digging this, I don’t want to brush my teeth in a game.” --Danny Bilson

That's probably not a reason I'd choose, but we all have our fetishes, I suppose.
I still haven't pulled the trigger on HR yet. If only it had more ninja in it, I think that'd have done it for me. I guess that origami paper star I always see can be construed as a ninja star... yeah, I suppose that'll do.

I'm cool, though, with making breakfast and brushing teeth, unlike the THQ dude.

There's plenty of ninja in it actually. You'll need steel nerves and insane timing in the car chase scene, you'll need impressive finger contortion abilities to make the right moves in tight quarters, you'll need super human reaction time in the fight scenes, and anti-twitch intelligence to avert disastrous decision making when put on the spot.

I'm just sayin, it isn't as low key as some of the videos may lead you to believe. It has to be experienced. And since we are just mere humans we will have to live with the mistakes we make in HR. The goodnews is if you fail at toothbrushing you can do it again, but if you fail in other areas cool folks can die.

So does Mario's "gameplay" award mean it's the best "game"?

Happy for Heavy Rain, but seeing black ops win anything makes me want to vomit.

The amount of mindless, spoiled, prepubescent, children playing video games out there must be staggering.

Actually no, I do not want a sample. I hate listening to little 10-12 year old kids cursing, talking gang bang slang, and making sexual jokes they don't ever get right because they don't understand them themselves.

Since I avoid a lot of mp for that reason, I'm not going to go seeking it out on some website.

Tis good news every time that game gets an award. It means the production was worth the risk both in accolades and above expected sales. Which means QD can feel confident going forward with their next two projects.

Half the time the public accepts cheaply-made crap as a great thing. That is what the public is doing with CoD here. No matter how high and mighty you may act, you have no proof to tell me why the public is always right about everything.

________________,

David Cage will make a fantastic FPS complete with that same Heavy Rain emotion to it.

Cage has stated in an interview that he want's to do a military FPS after his next 2 projects are done.

But, he wants to turn the whole military FPS genre upside-down, by making it all about individuals & how the war has greatly affected them, and about the real ravages & spoils of war, not just any everyday kill spree galore game.

Mark my words here, if Cage does go ahead with this project, he will own the whole military FPS genre.

HOLY CRAP! Saint, that sounds awesome! If I was going to try to make an FPS, that's be exactly my idea. Make it about the characters, rather than the action. You've honest-to-God just ratcheted my excitement for that project up through the moon. Just ten more years to wait...

i just cant understand how people dont get bored of playing the same sh*t over and over again!
everyone loves ice cream, but would you not get bored of it if you had nothing but ice cream to eat for breaky lunch and tea for 20 years?
id much rather him do another different unique game like heavy rain, then do a common as the common cold FPS!

Yup, well deserved. Also I'm pleasantly surprised to find Mass Effect as Best Game 2010 - well deserved too imo.

But one of the more... exotic nominations has to be the one for Fallout New Vegas. Nominated against Fifa, Civilization and Starcraft for STRATEGY of the year??? LOL!

Awesomesauce. I really hope that more accolades for Heavy Rain persuades more devs to create full games that really think outside the box, with such gripping, involving and mature storylines. QD seriously need to keep bringing them, and bring on L.A. Noire indeed.

Speaking of which, it apparently clocks in at 25-30 hours. Which, considering that is devspeak, means 18 hours at a stretch. Still, that's not disappointing. I'm more into it for the atmosphere than the length (as a nice change of pace). May 20 cannot come fast enough.
Peace.

That's just critics' opinions Digitalstorm (all of which can be easily fallible to stupidity or bias, it seems). If he didn't like the game, then he has a right to say that he doesn't think it should be GotY.
