DICE Message To Competition: We Are Coming For You

When the competition is ridiculously high, you can't afford to slip. One of your competitors will eat you alive.

And DICE has a warning for any developer that might trip and stumble: watch out. In speaking to OPM, DICE general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson expressed great confidence in their upcoming title, Battlefield 3. Remember, the Call of Duty guys have been using the same engine since 2005, while the Frostbite 2 engine is blowing everyone away.

"Our competitors are getting lazy. They're using the same engine, the same recipe for building a game. At some point you need to take that leap. I haven't seen them take that leap since a long time ago. We are doing that now. They had better watch out. We are coming for them."

Granted, the popularity of CoD may never be topped but the Battlefield franchise has proven worthy in the past, and unless the newest CoD effort steps up big time, many are thinking DICE will steal the shooter crown in 2011. Okay, not in terms of sales (that seems impossible), but Battlefield 3 may rule the school, along with the likes of Killzone 3 and Crysis 2. Added Troedsson:

"Our competitors keep building very, very high tempo games. We want to tell a story with more drama curves. It's not about pumping round after round for six hours."

Anybody else getting more and more excited?

Love how they singled out COD. Also, in a lot of forums and comments I see people saying they will be picking this up over the next COD. I like it. This is how you boast about your game. You say you are the best without actually saying you are the best.

The gameplay footage that I saw was incredible and I think if every other aspect of the game is as good as the graphics, which dice games usually are, then this game should outsell Cod.

It probably won't, but it will most likely deserve to.

battlefield 3 will no doubt be my favorite FPS of 2011, but unfortunately call of duty will probably win in terms of overall sales. its fan base it too set in stone.
but like i said, no matter what the numbers are, battlefield 3 will be my FPS of 2011

The realistic destructible environments are going to be a nice part of that leap as they appear to be putting more into that than in the Bad Company spinoffs.

"Watch out CoD" I like that.

Battlefield 2 didn't have a singleplayer campaign, it was only multplayer with a mode that let you practice with bots. So yeah, this will be an all new story.

It won't tie into 1 or 2. It's new stuff dealing with baddies who take over Russia and cause a ruckus around Europe and you are part of a spec ops team that aims to stop their wicked little plans.

@MadKatBebop Battlefield 2 'DOES' have a single player campaign. Sounds like you just jumped right into the multiplayer without looking. Go back and check it out, it's fun!!!

@frostface Battlefield 2 doesn't. Battlefield 3 is the successor to Battlefield 2, the smash hit PC game from 2005. You are confusing the main series with the "Bad Company" sub-series. This plot is stand alone, as Battlefield 2 didn't have a campaign.

Maybe best military FPS but I personally have really high hopes for Resistance 3. I think I'm more excited for that than UC3 or I2. Blasphemy I know, but someone has to be the black sheep.

You do realize only the PC version of BF3 has been shown off so far, right? I highly doubt the console versions will beat KZ3 graphically, although it'll probably equal or beat R3.

the $hitload of money cod is raking in has them going bonkers when they should just concentrate on making good games. it is called cod syndrome. it's not fatal, but does make some developers talk a little wacky.

I was hoping Medal of Honor would've dethroned COD last year, but that didn't happen. Looks like Battlefiled 3 will be one of my most anticipated games later this year. That and Uncharted 3.

I'm hoping this statement.. "Our competitors keep building very, very high tempo games. We want to tell a story with more drama curves. It's not about pumping round after round for six hours." Doesn't mean that the SP campaign is only going to be around 6 hours long..

I like the last sentence because it is so true. Most FPS's nowadays feel like most action movies nowadays: way too fast-paced and way too short, with an under-emphasis on story, drama, and emotion. The only FPS's I've seen that are not like this recently are the Resistance games, and to an extent the Killzone games (GG may not be able to make a totally stunning story, but they try damn hard and the campaign is around the high end of FPS campaign lengths).

If DICE succeeds in making a lengthy and dramatic campaign, then I will once again be impressed by them. They're excellent devs, so I believe in them and hope they can do it. Hopefully they can finally end this stereotype that an FPS can't have a good story, because in the right hands they most certainly can. Make us all proud DICE, and give CoD hell.
