New Resident Evil To Be A "Squad Based Shooter?"

Capcom wanted to shake up the Resident Evil franchise and the fans may agree to a "shake-up."

Is that what we're getting with Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City? Yes, that appears to be the name of the next horrific series installment, as evidenced by the Official Xbox Magazine's May 2011 issue (and as noted by StickSkills): SOCOM: Confrontation developer Slant Six Games is at the helm and believe it or not, this new RE is apparently a "squad-based shooter." According to the tipster, players will assume the role of an Umbrella Corporation special forces member; the military team is on a quest to clean up Raccoon City after the town was decimated in RE2. We'll be able to "employ a number of tricks to fool and manipulate enemies," and we may even have to kill series hero Leon Kennedy...although we have no idea why. That dude was cool.

Operation Raccoon City is slated to arrive for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 some time this winter, if you choose to believe this information. ...a squad-based shooter? I'm not a die-hard RE fan but I've played just about every installment. All I can picture is a cross between RE and Rainbow Six...and I ain't feelin' that. In my eyes, much of the intimidation and fear comes from the fact that you were always alone; it's just you out there, with nobody to help you. But maybe that's just me.

Arent there enough squad-based shooters out there? I'm playing Crysis 2 right no w(and so should you), and i love the freedom that comes with not being stuck to 3 other people all the time.

Oh good grief. I don't even like Resident Evil, but why on earth make it a squad based shooter? Is that all developers can make these days? Squad based shooters? If so, that is a terrible indictment of our cultural values and the abilities of our software engineers.

Capcom's been riding M$ di** so much it actually caught an STD: SOTW (Selling Out to The West). We already know they're been trying to appeal to the western market, so making a Left 4 Dead-like game means they're kicking it in high gear.

Key words in their: "WHEN it was released"...

Confrontation grew to be a very good game. I also think at one point if I remember right, Confrontation had the most traffic among PSN users. That says a lot about a game. Or maybe it says more about the Socom faithful fans!

Survival Horror should mean your in solitude. Being with other people to help you kind of takes that away IMO.

Don't get down on it... Who knows, it might turn out well. Sure, having constant companions may take away the fear, but the fact that it's set in Raccoon City, and apparently goes back to the roots of the series with actual zombies and Nemesis shows the right approach (to me anyway). And who knows, a squad-based shooter could work in this environment as you're being swarmed by zombies, and need firepower to take it out. I'm thinking it'll be horror, not survival horror.

I wouldn't go THAT far. Who knows it could turnout better than RE5 at least. Besides all Koei games are basically same every year they never change.

So my question is would you really play these two games being made by Koei or Tecmo Koei as they are now called.

There wasn't anything wrong with RE5 as a game. The only problem RE5 had was that it didn't feel like RE. It was a solid game otherwise.

How can you kill Leon when you have to be him later on in the timeline?

Anyway, the bigger issue here is that the series is going full blown action and ditching any remaining horror. That makes it a no buy. Thanks for the last 15 years Resident Evil, but I think you are finally toast.

I'm guessing that the game won't be RE canon, thus allowing changes to the established narrative, including the death of some otherwise essential characters. That being the case, don't be so quick to call doom upon the series.

It's gonna have to knock off the spinoffs and just reboot to survive. And that reboot will have to be filled with scares, darkness, and decent controls with a backdrop that threatens various forms of madness. So far all of those things are gone.

While I've never been a big fan of Resident Evil, horror just isn't my thing, this is definitely not the route I would take.

The only way that I could see this working for the horror genre, is if you start out with a squad and as you play through the game, your squad gets pulled into the darkness screaming whenever you aren't watching them.

That way by the time you get done, you are all alone and it could be creepier because you've lost all your friends.

If however it's just a tactical shooter set in Raccoon City, well then I'm sorry for all the RE fans.

I'm losing more and more confidence in Capcom, not because of the westernization, but because they just have to jack up some of their franchise.

They could have just given Ninja Theory a new IP to work on but they needed the brand name of DMC to boost the sale.

I'm doubting any possibility of Capcom making a great game anytime soon.
But I'll still buy their game if it's worth the purchase.(Silently hoping that DmC will kickass)

Agreed, but like I've been saying they're good when it comes to storytelling (so I know they will give us something deep & compelling), from that trailer it looked like the gameplay is pretty much same over the top craziness we know and love (hopefully better & more in-depth IF this can be achieved) they're main focus should be trying to find ways to rid themselves of all the technical issue that's plague them since Heavenly Sword.

I might pushing it here but who knows for the people do play it they may find themselves actually liking the new Dante if they can come off all the played out twilight references (still don't understand why people use twilight... A drug addict I get, because he is super skinny, but seriously... twilight.

I think that before anyone goes off on how Capcom is or isn't handling the RE franchise, they should remember that this wouldn't be the first RE based FPS/Action game. There was another one last generation before.

This, just like Outbreak, is just an offshoot and not the next game in the series...

This may end up being essential to the series as well, but it's simply a different formula revisiting earlier stories in the franchise. It's also not the first FPS RE game at all, that was Survivor, which was followed by a sequel. Never played them, prolly won't play this.

That said, this isn't the first time Capcom has played with the RE formula and tried different approaches to it. It's definitely NOT the future of the franchise.

yep, dazed and confused the japanese developers are. the rise of twitch gaming, and 360 as console of choice for hardcore gamers in na has left them scratching their heads. they covet the na market so badly they are willing to throw out their traditional model of making games. that wacko infanue is gone, thank god. this project was probably originated by him.

capcom used to great publisher that somehow did not make the transition to this gen that well. re5, dmc4 were big dissapointments for me. re5 fell flat on its face as some kind of gears clone, and dmc4 had so much backtracking and fighting the same bosses it ruined the game for me. hopefully they can turn it around with re6. the lost in nightmares content for re5 shows they can still create a compelling atmosphere.

So true DeadReaper. I only played the first RE remake on the cube, and RE4, 5. They need to take it back to RE1 with fixed camera views(with a pin point analog scheme instead of the forward is always foreward etc), lots of puzzles, customizable weapons, and solo only, maybe co-op optional. Capcom should have held the reigns on this one. I'm not very impressed.

Squad Based Resident Evil game??? Sounds like what was attempted w/ Jericho... Doubt it will even be THAT "good" (I did like Jericho a bit but it could have been far better...) of a game after what I've seen happen to the RE franchise, 5 just down right sucked and was no where near a "survivor" or "horror" game...
