Will The Next God Of War Boast A Multiplayer Option?

Not that Kratos would ever need multiplayer action (in our minds, at least) but these days, it seems no new game can exist without the popular option.

Hacking-based action games seem to be the only genre left that continually bucks the multiplayer trend, and that includes last year's God of War III and Bayonetta. But might the next GoW project finally boast a multiplayer feature? If you check this job listing, you'll see that Sony Computer Entertainment America Santa Monica is currently seeking a senior online programmer for their "God of War team." They ask that applicants have experience developing tools that "support networking needs such as in-game communication, client-server, matchmaking, leaderboards," etc. Now, this is assuming Santa Monica's next project really is a new God of War entry; bear in mind that they said Kratos would be left behind for a while after GoWIII launched. Maybe they're trying something new...? Considering the critical success of the franchise, though, perhaps a new installment is a must.

So what say you? If it is the next GoW, do you care about multiplayer? Does it even need it? Will it be more popular?

Yeah I've heard the developer say way before GOWIII was even released that the GOWIII and GOW:GOS were gonna be the last GOW games so yeah it is more than likely going to be a new IP.

GOW and Kratos were never said to be done from my understanding. Even in the special features on GOW3 the devs only say the trilogy is over. The story they told is over. Theirs still a lot of room to explore. Obviously Athena is still around? Eh? Maybe? I don't know. But GOW isn't done, just the story they told in those 3 (5 if you include the pap entries, which we should) games.

Naah, but perhaps some multiplayer minigames with the enemy characters doing funny shit like chariot races would be something I'm sure can be enjoyable extras.

But ,I prefer them to focus on the sp alone.

i know what you mean. they should be hiring people for writing becuase i thought gow3 war's story was just blah. i think castlevannia is a far superior title in regards to story, open enviroment, and beautiful vistas. gow3 had too much backtracking, and was too dark. they needed something like the steads of time, or whatever their called. instead we get cramped, and dark rooms with so much backtracking around that hub. i also must point to the length of castlevannia's campign as a better value. its story just got better, and better. ii think it has the best ending for a game this gen. just blown away by it.

gow3 possibly implementing multiplayer leaves me scratching my head as to how they'd pull it off. one side a bunch of various enemies from the gow univere vs a bunch of kratos clones. maybe competitive coop.

who knows? if it is a new gow i hope they concentrate on the single player campign. not every game has to have multiplayer, you know.

I don't think i liked the new art style of god of war 3!
The art style of God of War 1 and 2 was better.
Why did they come up with that light in dark areas thing!I don't like Dark Places in these kinds of Epic Story based games.

That stufff is said all the time though. That is thrown around a lot. It's been a year that's a pretty long vacation. Wouldn't be too soon at all to see another GOW in the next 2 years!

No... Just No! God Of War does not need multiplayer, I can't even imagine how on earth you could implement it without sacrificing the core mechanic of the game.

Not that it matters, I doubt Santa Monica's next game is another GoW installment. It's the 'God of War team', that doesn't mean it's another God of War game.

I really want to see some more story to GoW... but oh well. Let's hope Santa Monica's new IP will be about Greek mythology and epic storytelling again!

I never cared for mythology before, but loved learning about it in the GoW games. I was watching clash of the gods on History Channel and was like "ya, I killed that guy, and that guy too!".

yeah, stig did do a good job and has said he already has ideas for kratos. i'm sure you watched the extras on the game. he mentioned an interesting idea jaffe had about kratos continuing onto the gods of norse mythology. that actually sound interesting.

The only way I can see them needing those talents, and working on a game in the GoW style of gameplay is if they are working a new IP with similar gameplay, but one that would allow you to do co-op online.

That would make sense and it could be uber fun, anything else I'm afraid would fail. Hack n slash MP, you're just talking fighting game.

There is absolutely no place for multiplayer in God of War. I think (and really hope) this is for something else.

The studio is incredibly talented and I want to see what they can do with a new IP. Not that I don't love love love GoW, but I think they should try some other stuff for now.

Well I said I didn't wanna see it in uncharted 2 and I quickly retracted that statement when I played in the beta. I also said uncharted 2 shouldn't have co-op and I still stand by that as far as the campaign goes. But what they did for the co-op was great fun! So with that said I will go against my better judgment and say let's see what they can do with it!

But I really feel like tier is no place for MP in GOW. Here's hoping for a new IP in that case. But damn I want another GOW!

Godslim, what are you talking about?! Multiplayer in Uncharted 2 is some of the most fun I've ever had in a multiplayer, and I'm sure a ton of others would agree with me.

Whatever they're making I hope it doesn't have any multiplayer of any sort. We have more than enough MP games out and coming out in the future. Devs who excel at making great SP games shouldn't waste their time with MP unless they can guarantee the SP won't be affected and the MP will actually be worth playing. Naughty Dog is a good example, they did it right.

no, i doubt there will be MP in the next GOW.
simply because the guys at SM know how important a great story is, and there not going to tack on MP if its going to compromise the SP.
which it will, because all the scale they do in there games, they dont have enough time to build the campaign, let alone cram MP in there too!
i hope they dont too for the same reasons.
all i want is GOW4, a direct sequel to GOW3 beginning right at the end of GOW3.
either that, or a prequel to the series explaining who that other warrior gia was hinting at in the extras.
O, and please, for the love of god!
can we please remember GOW is about so much more then just gore this time!?

Btw, that other warrior mentioned by Zeus (Gaia said that Kratos disappointed her or something like that, Zeus actually talked about the "other one") is Kratos's brother. Its pretty obvious since they had been dropping subtle hints about his brother for every game up until Ghost of Sparta.

While I was initially in awe of what Santa Monica managed with GoWIII, I've somewhat soured on the experience since. Perhaps I simply need a refresher course, but I can't deny that it was an awesome game. But GoW has no place for multiplayer, at least not in PvP combat, or evn really co-op. I suppose platforming segments, or races could work, but not in the main campaign.

Then again, it says the GoW team, which, while giving the applicant a possible idea of what they may want, doesn't necessarily denote a new GoW, or that they're trying to implement that style exactly into a multiplayer segment. Imagine Heaveny Sword 2, running on the GoW3 engine, with Nariko/Kai co-op...

It really fits, anyone who played HS knows how fun it was to play as Kai and how well both characters compliment each other.

Would be a fun option offline and/or online.

I'm all for co-op and multiplayer in God of War as long as it's epic and it doesn't negatively affect the single player part of the game or anything having to do with the game(graphics, sound, etc) AT ALL.

I only want them to make another IP if it's going to be an epic AAA title, if not than God of War it is.

They said a while back GOW3 was their last GOW, so most likely it's a new IP.

Now, if they are like most developers nowdays that every new game they ship in a series it's their last, only to release a new game in the same series (a.k.a. Hideo Kojima) a few years later, I would say the next GOW will include online co-op.

Jaffe's idea of the ending of the GOW series is extremely well thought out and made a lot of sense. He went on to more than just Norsk Mythology. He was talking about a bunch of different mythologies. I thought the ending was good though, contrary to what a lot of people say. Maybe it wasn't the best ending but it did the series justice. Oh and the fact that you could just go to town on Zues' face until your hearts content was just awesomesauce. LOL. Anyways, I was uber impressed by GOWIII and it's art direction. Some of the best polish i've ever seen in a game. The draw in distances were down righ amazing and it's a technical achievement to say the least. Castlevania looked great but it looked a little too shiny to me. Was still a great game and i really want to finish it. Having said that GOWIII won hands down in the graphics/polish department.

I hope they do something new or do announce the next God Of War. Either way it should be a good game.

The ending was good and left a cliffhanger. Will the next game be a prequel if they do do one or will it to be continued after who knows ? Chances are it's a new IP.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I'll reserve judgment till I see what they're working on, because back when multiplayer was announced for Uncharted 2 I was unhappy, but now I love it.

IF Santa Monica decides to do MP with God of War I wouldnt be mad as long as they can pull it off. And Im pretty sure if they didnt think they could or think it wouold detract from the Single player, they wont pursue it. I have faith in ANYTHING Santa Monica does! Same with Naughty Dog and Guerilla Games. (Just to name a few)
