Can Grand Theft Auto V Top Call Of Duty's Popularity?
Analysts are already predicting that Grand Theft Auto V will be another huge hit; Michael Pachter anticipates 20 million+ in the sales department. But since GTAIV, Call of Duty has solidified itself as the most popular video game series of the generation. Can GTAV really vault back to the top?
The question is, has the industry shifted? Have the tastes of the mainstream/casual gaming culture altered? There's little doubt that CoD will continue to dominate the multiplayer department and nowadays, that translates to overall domination of the market. While it's almost inevitable that GTAV will boast a fantastic campaign, few are thinking the multiplayer element will be capable of competing with Activision's blockbuster series. Furthermore, those who love the multiplayer shooters will quickly slap down the $60; to them, the game represents hundreds, perhaps thousands of hours of entertainment. No matter how long GTAV is, that can't compete.
Or are we overstating the popularity of multiplayer and understating the immense cache the very name "Grand Theft Auto" holds? Although we haven't seen a new GTA entry for nearly three years now, everybody is well aware of the power of name-brand recognition. And when it comes to GTA, few game franchises can attest to an equal level of widespread recognition. Also, let's not forget that many presume open-ended, freedom-based interactive experiences to be the future of this industry, and recent efforts like Red Dead Redemption and inFamous have proven spectacularly popular. Certainly, GTA vs. CoD is a clash of the titans and in this ever-changing game landscape, it's tough to pick an out-and-out winner. Heck, that's probably impossible.
Well, whatever happens, it'll be fun to watch.

just the other day my thick lady ps3 with original 60ghd went out on me for the 5th time(ylod). i been repairing it since the 2nd time it ylod the 1st time it was repaired my uncle did it while we watched it on youtube.
i was doing the normal routine but this time things didnt go well..... when i connected back the blu ray drive its a strap that connects to the mother board for the ps3 to operate the programs games demos & vids(dont know the proper name for this strap). i broke the latch of that keeps this strap secure. when this happened my heart damn near stopped cause my uncle is a computer technician & he tol me if the latch breaks of im basically done. i sat there for atleast 2 hours tryna figure out ways to keep it secure but nothing worked. finally i got in a postion for the the ps3 light to show blue meaning the bluray was connected i thought it was resolved &...... it wasnt. i was only able to use the ps3 net all the other programs wouldnt work. man i sat there sad like a breakup with my Xz.
luckily.... my cuzo been spreading the word to foks that i can repair ps3s & his patna(friend) had a 60gig that had ylod but wasnt repaired for a long time. cuzo bought the ps3 my way but this ps3 had more then ylod the power supply would overheat in 15 mins....... so what did i do, i swapped my power supply in customer ps3 after fixing ylod.... its more to the story but im tryna keep it brief. i tried to transfer all my data from my ps3 to customer but cxause the other power supply wouldnt stay on more then 15 mins the transfer failed......
i have data on there all the way back from feb 2007 im talking music pics vidz & game saves, (i was level 34 in GT5 with a 79% status) that i found very important & now.... its all gone. suprisingly i was heated but as long as i got a 60 gig ps3...... man my technology entertainment field is legit.
nothing against the slims i like em but i would gladly pay 400-550 for a 60 or 80 gig with bckwrds comp with the extra slots for sd & etc. thats the story though.... i lost all my data but i stil got a runing 60g & im koo.

GTV would not only need to win over die hard COD fans but also keep them. Not to mention attract additional players as well if it is to surpass it. No matter what anyone thinks of the franchise it is a MACHINE! It will take quite an effort to topple it and it will most likely take a couple of entries. I seriously doubt that this can happen with one game. It would need to be a perfect gaming experience to accomplish that feat.
The game doesn't sell itself either. Activision makes damn sure that these things sell. RockStar needs to come in full blast. Deliver that superior quality with the hook that pulls people in. RockStar is one of the few developers with enough mass appeal to pull it off.

GTA however, will continue to be GTA. They've been so for more than a decade already. Noone has been able to deliver any threat to the king of open world gaming so far. And the world can handle more than one premium open world game. So unless Rockstar seriously screw up bigtime, GTA will continue to float steadily.
But it looks like many of you think that gamers are either single player gamers OR only play online games. I disagree with that. It may be a generation thing, or a platform thing even, being that online gaming still is rather new on consoles. But in the longer run I believe most will be both online and solo players, ergo buy both gta AND [insert cod replacement title here].
At least I know that I will... :)

i, however, will not compromise my principles. listen, i think cod is a decent game, but does it really warrant the constant coverage, and those insane sales? i think kz3 blows it away, but somehow kz3 is barely a blip on the sales chart. if you are a fps fan, or a lover of great graphics you need to pick up kz3 guys.

Cod has some good multiplayer game mechanics, that's what made them big. There's something in there for most online gamers of this kind. But that was then. They *should* have brought more new innovations and tweaks with Black Ops. They mostly added some stuff, the basics were the same. I think for example the dogtag-feature in Crysis 2 is pure genious. That's a sign of a developer who has put his mind into the fine details of the game and come up with simple, but darn clever solutions. And who knows what the next Battlefield will contain, they seem really motivated to take over the throne after the reception Bad Company got.
We shall see, my friend. Time will tell.
But if this was a poker game I'd quite possibly go all in by now. ;)
(I'm a bad poker player, though)

IF they go back to the good old days of san andreas and vice city where you could do whatever you wanted for the fun of it.
then yea, no problem its almost guaranteed GTAV will break sales records!
if they stick to GTAIV though and say ohhhhhh noooooooooo you cant do that, its far too unrealistic!
and force you to do taxi driver missions for half the game!
then no, it wont.
i dunno about everyone else, but i find driving people around for hours on end quite boring!
if i wanted to do that, id go get my taxi license because at least with that id be getting paid!

I'm not saying that no-one likes GtaIV, there are plenty who do, but there are also a huge group who got disappointed. Somehow this is not reflected in the reviews at all... Strange.
___________
Tuesday, March 29, 2011 @ 8:25:45 AM
it was such a good looking title, not for its time but even by todays standards!
that confirms why i dont listen to reviews anymore, because all reviewers are interested in these days are graphics!
a game could play like sh*t, have so many bugs, but as long as it looks pretty it will score well!
cough GTAIV, cough assassins creed brotherhood!
as for the split, will they change?
i seriously doubt it!
they may of split there fans, but the fact of the matter remains it is still one of the industries best selling games!
if it flopped and sold only 4M units then it would be a hard choice to make, but it sold extremely well so i cant see them going back to the old ways.
exactly what i was saying the other day, what happened to games just doing things because its fun?
JC2 is one of the buggiest, most repetitive, most poorly put together games i have ever played!
but do i care?
NOPE!
why?
because its one of the very few games out there that says oh f*ck it, i know this is unrealistic but lets do it anyway because its fun!
only if more games would be like that!
i wish GTAV could be set in vice city, but with the populated detailed city like liberty city.
keep the tech, keep the amazing graphics.
but bring back all the cheats, bring back the massive jumps, bring back the dual wielding, and weapon customization, bring back car customization, bring back purchasing fronts, bring back the turf wars from san andreas, bring back the quirky WTF missions GTA has been famous for!
GTA has always been known for having the quirkiest, coolest most WTF levels in gaming history!
WTF happened to those in GTAIV?
O, and bring back the vigilanty missions from previous games!
was so much fun driving around town in a tank taking lawbreakers out!
O, and bring back the fights with the cops!
in san andreas, vice city i would spend hours shooting at the cops, running away was so much fun screwing with them!
in GTAIV you cant because if you try to run away from them in your car you die in like 2 seconds!
last even shorter in a firefight!
one game i REALLY wish we could get a sequel to is scarface.
first game i got when i bought my wii last year was that.
reminded me why its one of my favorite games of all time!
was so much fun doing all the deals to get the drugs, then transporting them back to my warehouse, then distributing them to my fronts and defending the ones under attack.
even the missions were so much fun, and the weapons were so crazy!
tis why i say games have gone downhill so much this gen!
games on the ps1 and ps2 were so much fun!
games these days, just are not!
funnest open world game i have played has to be just cause 2, but that does not hold a candle to any of the GTA games, or even scarface, or the getaway, or even driver!
speaking of driver, what ever happened to the sequel san francisco?
hope it has not been canned, it was looking so good!
was so pissed when i found out true crime got delayed, that was looking really good too!
please, dont tell me ubisoft has canned driver!

Me and a few others around here are of a totally different opinion regarding GtaIV. That's the nature of that beast. Some share your opinion, others share our opinion. And both "sides" are plentiful, and almost noone are somewhere between. A real split!

Actually I even liked the old GTA graphics better! It kind of suited the game better with light, bright, simple visuals that were fast to render.
Plus, GtaIV felt like a step back despite the upgraded visuals. In San Andreas we had a state to play in, we could go mountain biking, play around with hillbillies, travel, loads of "stuff to do" beside the storyline quests, we had all sorts of air and water vehicles, customize the cars, even the main character. All that was gone again with GtaIV.
That's my take on GtaIV. It's still a "good game" generally speaking, it just isnt "GTA-good", if that made any sense. :D

Now, I doubt R* will make it focus too heavily on multiplayer, but I think that they will refine what was seen in IV and RDR. Perhaps they will even go so far as to create closed zones so that it feels more like a TPS. Maybe they'll improve the shooting mechanics to be more like an outright TPS. An improvement in that portion would certainly draw fans to the online. But they also need the single player. They need to put more in, keep the serious believability of the story, but also need to include the off-the-wall zaniness of earlier entries.
I'd like to say yes, I really would. But CoD needs to change things up before it kills itself. That would mean GTA tops it by default, but that isn't an honourable victory. I think in terms of the heights of popularity, GTA isn't likely to ever achieve that success again, but if anything can give CoD a run for its money, we all know what it is.
WII SPORTS!!!! (wait... what?)
Peace.

CoD is an annual thing, all annual releases based on fads will have their moment of winning (from a numbers point of view), GTA is not released based on fad. It's released when the quality is acceptable for R* with no exceptions.
With releases so sparse, GTA lessens it's risk of burning itself out. The only threat it has is the amount of clones that hit the market and harm the original, GTA. However, judging from how different and polished GTA4 was compared to it's clones when it released back in '08, it has little to worry about in that department too.
So basically, with all that into account, no, i don't see CoD beating GTA for long.

Yes millions go to the midnight releases of CoD. But before CoD there was GTA. People have been waiting in anticipation for GTA..Where as they "know" CoD is coming. Besides GTA was the home of mindless mayhem before CoD..

GTA is a game that anybody can pick up & play without understanding a game or concept of the game & have fun for a ridicolous amount of time. my dad whos a hard working business man doesnt like gaming at all but when he seen me playing GTA4 he asked for the controller & got into the game within 2 mins he was cussing & acting as if he was in GTA.
with the number of PS3s & 360s in folks homes now & u underestimating GTA being able to sell more then COD u out ya got damn mind. with every release of a new GTA they always do NUMBERS. i think this series is what made gaming on the scale it is now.

I never got into GTAIV, but V, I will definitely purchase and make it part of the collection. I am sure there will be a host of improvements to the engine, and I am hoping all kinks would have been ironed at to make GTAV the best version yet to have and play.

I HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM AND NEED SOME ADVICE
My ps3 finally YLOD tonight and was wondering if there was anyway I could get my game saves off the HDD. Any help would be appreciated.
