Report: PS3 Tops 360 In Global Active Console Race
There are many ways to interpret sales figures, especially when it comes to worldwide products with a wide range of features.
According to new research released by Strategy Analytics' Connected Home Devices Service, the PlayStation 3 has surpassed the Xbox 360 "to become the number two TV console worldwide by the end of 2010." The report is entitled, "Global TV Games Console Forecast: Will New Sensor Technology Revive the Demand?" and it presents the numbers as follows: the active installed base of the PS3 reached 43.4 million, which just tops the Xbox 360's 42.9 million. Unsurprisingly, the Nintendo Wii remains in the top spot, with 75.5 million active devices. Said Strategy Analytics' Digital Consumer Practice Senior Analyst Jia Wu:
"While the Kinect peripheral has given a boost to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 strategy, the console’s performance outside of the US continues to disappoint. Global demand for Sony’s PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years."
The report further makes a prediction for the current year, saying global sales of the 360 will increase to 13.7 million, while the PS3 will expand even further to 15.7 million. The expectation is that the Wii's decline will continue, with overall sales falling to 10 million. For the record, they also predict that Nintendo will launch a successor to the Wii before the start of 2013.
The console race is in an interesting position, isn't it? In terms of overall sales, the PS3 has also surpassed the 360 in Europe.

It still has Gears 3, Forza 4 and Project Kingdoms (completely forgot about that one).
And bash Kinect all you like, Star Wars Kinect looks interesting at best, Child of Eden (while multiplat) looks great on Kinect and then there's Steel Battalion.
I know, I know, it still pales in comparison to Infamous 2, Uncharted 3, Twisted Metal, Resistence 3, Motorstorm Apocalypse, The Last Guardian, ICO/SotC Collection in 3D, Sly 4, The Agent (a Rockstar exclusive, of course it'll be fantastic), FF Vs XIII (PLEEASE stay exclusive!!!), Ratchet and Clank All 4 One, SOCOM 4, Sorcery, Portal 2 with Steam on PS3, the new Yakuza spin-off AND the new God of War spin-off. Not to mention Littlebig Planet 2, Killzone 3 and MLB The Show 2011 which are out now.
You know what, even if Sony only announce 2 new games for 2012 exclusive to PS3, I will still be very much content, and will probably only match what 360 is offering as exclusives.

if crysis 2 looks that good as a MP game, imagine what they could do with that as exclusive!
interested to see what the gameplays like too, the trailer they showed reminded me allot of 300!
apparently its undertaken allot of changes from then, so will be interesting to see what the gameplays like!
i pray we get a new crackdown game!
1 was freaking sweet, but 2 sucked!
i would kill for a new crackdown game, but this time make it a proper full fledged AAA game!
not that low budget DLC crap!

And the Star Wars Kinect game? Could be interesting, but that is a definate wait and see. I remember being excited about SW Unleashed when it was announced, thinking of the possibilities of using the Wii-mote as a light sabre, and well, that didn't exactly pan out.

So this can be interpreted as either a result of the colossal failure rate of 360's (what portion of those monthly sales are replacement consoles I wonder?) or a waning interest in Microsoft's console... or a nice mixture of both.
Either way, this comes as no great surprise. The competition may be a little stiffer this go round, but this is still Sony's game, and nobody plays it better!

So another Xbot jumped into the fight, so I hit him with the wave of games that's PS3 only games. Then he came back with the sales b.s and called the PS3 exclusives boring so I came back with those who think games like God of War 3 and Uncharted 2 are boring probably think replacing burned out 360 after burned out 360 is a good thing.

I started it up and wow, just wow. It had way more delay than even I thought it would. It lagged and the hand on screen was never where mine was. You have to hold your hand in the air for about 8 seconds to select something? Lame.
No wonder it barely boosted sales, ps2 eye toy had better tracking.
I put a lot of time researching both platforms before release because I knew I could only afford one. It was obvious then that ps3 was the way to go and I'm glad other people are starting to get that too.

hardly boosted sales?
is that why it has become the FASTEST ELECTRONIC DEVICE IN HISTORY?
i dont really like it either, too many restrictions but you cant say its been selling poorly!
thats all thanks to M$s marketing, they have spent a absolute fortune on it!
electronics NEVER make it onto the news, but the whole week of release kinect was on the news every night!
that was a first!
M$ even bought out all the westfields stages in the country and had kinect on display for everyone to try out!
something neither sony, nor ninty did for there products!
maybe one day both will wake up and realize you have to spend money to make money!
never underestimate the power of advertisement!
every harvy norman in the country has a kinect set up outside its gaming section!
does sony, or ninty have any of there products setup for display?
nope!
thats how M$ manages to sell there products so well, they actually spend the time and money to advertise it!
only wish sony took a leaf from there book!

Doesn't matter what form of electronics it is whether be it a smartphone, highend keyboard, electronic drumset, high def TV or a gaming console. They all fall under a certain percentage failure rate.
The point we are all trying to make , which it seems ---------- doesn't get is that 360's failure rate was horrid.

Despite what the folks on X-Play say if the PSP has a weakness it's that for every great PSP game that comes out you're stuck playing an average to below average PSP game.

1. While Mass Effect 2 and 3 are now on PS3, Gears of War remains exclusive. That's still a large audience right there, but if the rumours are anything to go by, we might see a Gears of War trilogy on PS3 by the end of 2012.
2. Kinect, while technically inferior to Move in terms of precision and use, is the most hyped device and biggest selling console peripheral of 2010 and most likely 2011. Kinect Adventures along with Dance Central and fitness games requiring no controllers or anything is truly fantastic. But like the Wii, it's a casual gamers fad, so it'll be interesting to see how long it lasts.
3. Halo fans. Even if Bungie is gone, brand value is through the roof and MS still has control of that franchise. I wonder if quality will still be good without Bungie at the helm now?
4. Stupid amounts of money thanks to Windows and PC profits. That money is used to promote what little the 360 has, so to the ignorant fools who only pay attention to ads, the 360 has everything that's cool and popular!!! If they read even one internet article, many views would change to PS3 preference.
5. Xbox Live. The creme de la creme of the 360. Sure, you gotta pay a yearly fee to use it, and play friends online, and chat with friends. In fact, what can you do with a simple Silver membership? Last I checked, not much. Anyways, cross game chat, party options and demos of every game offered certainly makes 360 better in the eyes of many. Once PS3 gets cross game chat and party options (free or with PS Plus), 360's edge may well be completely gone.
6. Current 360 gamers. The hardest hurdle to jump. Like many of my friends, many others have already invested so much time and money into their 360s that jumping ship is out of the question. Most have a PS3 as well for the exclusives, but still use their 360's for multiplats and online gaming with friends. If PS3 can find a way to jump that hurdle, I tip my hat to them.

XBL.
There are only 17 million (or so) gold subscribers to XBL, despite Microsoft claiming to have sold well over 50 million units, and despite the 42.9 million this research indicates are active. Yes, XBL might be a haven for hardcore gamers for a particular genre of game, but in reality, it doesn't even represent the majority of Xbox customers.
I think that you are overstating the importance of XBL, and overstating the market share element. The market that has really let Sony down this generation has been the US. In Japan the PS3 to 360 ratio is silly. Just last week, the PS3 outsold the 360 by more than 14:1. In Europe, the SP3 is 1 million units sold ahead despite the 360's 18 month head start. If you exclude the US market, the PS3 is annihilating the 360 (it'd be even worse in Europe but for the UK which also apparently has a soft spot for 360). However, you can't exclude the US market. Microsoft has pulled off an incredible feat, they have hoodwinked the US gamer population into buying multiple units of a product with acknowledged design flaws. What I don't understand is why Microsoft has not been the subject of a huge class action law suit yet.
However that's beside the point. the point is that XBL may be the crowning glory, but it's only enjoyed by about 17 million gamers (the larger 30+ million figure includes all Silver XBL accounts as well).

i think you are downplaying the importance of xbox live to hardcore gamers in na. i also think it's far more the case of sony fumbling away the na america market to ms than any hoodwinkng. they should have taken more of a hit on rrod issue, but there was so much negativity around the ps3 they pretty much walked away unscathed. i blame that ridiculous price point of the ps3, and the pooly handled multiplats.
sony had all the momentum going into this gen controlling over 70% of the console market. now it's in the mid 20"s. the 360 didn't take it from sony, sony just dropped the ball with overpriced hard to develop for hardware.

Sorry? What? I didn't understand that.
@Excelsior. The air of negativity that surrounded the PS3 was partly the ridiculous price. A price that was - BTW a steal considering the cost of building the thing and what you actually got for your money. Expensive, yes. Bad value for money? Absolutely not.
That air of negativity through was extremely suspicious because it emanated long before the PS3 arrived and had a distinct spin to it. When the PS3 did arrive both the system and it's games received disparate reviews. The more balanced sites reviewed fairly, and the less balanced ones looked for every minor thing they could and promptly castigated the machine over it. For the first two years we had to hear how it had no games, and then how gram the multi-platform ports were, then how SOny was ramming BluRay down our throats and how superior HD-DVD was, and how XBL was so worth the money and PSN was nothing, then Home was nothing and so on and so forth. Every Internet forum around had legions of US based gamers with seemingly infinite time to bait and troll Sony fans. That media campaign - yes I said campaign - may, or may not, have been coordinated, but it had almost as much effect as if Microsoft had specifically commissioned a campaign of good old FUD against the PS3, exactly as they used to do in the business software world. FUD = Fear Uncertainty and Doubt.
But, hey, whatever. XBL is or marginal importance since the gamers that use it would simply use another network if XBL wasn't there. I dare say that if the majority of them realized how good - and free - PSN is, they might consider a PS3 instead of paying to play their toaster online.

if you want to keep everything best thing to do is google YLOD fixes, or have a look around your local area should be able to find someone who can fix it for you.
or if you want to get a new one theres a program out that lets you decrypt your HDD and copy everything off it.
id try and fix it though, 60GBs are so rare so id do anything i could to hold onto it.

You will only get a measly 3 months warranty on a refurbished ps3 that will most likely fail sometime in the near future and will pay 3/4 of the price for a slim just so that Sony can make a profit by kicking you when you are down.
My advice is to get it fixed yourself, backup everything once it is up and running and start saving for a slim.

To all those suggesting the You tube, 'in-home' fix for the so called YLOD, please just stop, stop telling anyone to do this. All you're doing by telling someone to do this is consigning their PS3 to a very early and permanent grave.
The so called YLOD is a general hardware fault with many potential causes. So adopting a specific approach to a YLOD fix is difficult without more information.
One point to note, you *cannot* reflow the solder in your system without damaging it. The temperature required to make the solder reflow is such that you would bake the other components on the motherboard and induce thermal warping of the motherboard while attempting to heat it sufficiently to re-flow solder.
If the YLOD is caused by a poor contact or joint, then doing any of the usual take it apart and heat here 'fixes' will do nothing. The most they will do is cause the motherboard to flex slightly which temporarily causes the bad joint to make contact again, and you might get some further use until the same fault repeats. But you're not fixing anything, and in fact you're really inducing further cracks and/or separation of joints on the motherboard every time you heat it. The HSF in the PS3 sucks the heat away from the motherboard to prevent this type of flexing as well as the more obvious chip damage, normally the motherboard will not flex excessively because of the heat removal.
But seriously, if you have an old 60GB system with BC, then you have a system that's in the order of 4 to 4½ years old. If you've used it heavily, the HSF will probably need a bit of a clean, and perhaps even a replacement. Send the poor thing to Sony and pay for their service. They'll send you back a 60GB system, probably not the original one you sent them, but one that has been thoroughly reconditioned and soak tested.
Imagi
Friday, April 01, 2011 @ 1:15:19 PM
Paying so much money for a refurbished product that failed due to a manufacturing fault with very limited warranty comes dangerously close to being labelled as a scam. Course there are other causes for the YLOD, but most instances are because of the lead free solder they used.
Highlander
Friday, April 01, 2011 @ 1:49:51 PM
The problem there is that during transit, anything can happen. I've had two refurbs - from other sources that I do trust, and one of them arrived and was essentially DOA as it YLOD'd within 2 hours of turn on.
When the guy got it back, he found that even with the packaging it had been in (it was *well* packed) it must have sustained one or more heavy jolts in-transit as the HSF had somehow got loos and was moving slightly and not maintaining good contact to remove heat.
So it's quite possible for Sony to ship a 100% reliable replacement unit, but by the time it arrives it could have developed a fault thanks to the handling it receives just getting to you.
Certainly, the refurb you receive from Sony is under warranty so although it's inconvenient you can get a replacement for free from Sony.

The PS3 is 1 million units sold ahead of the 360, and this is despite the 360 having an 18 month head start in Europe (remember the PS3 launched in Europe 4 months after the Japan/NA launch). Really and truly, apart from the US, the PS3 is doing great. In terms of HD gaming, it's a two horse race, and the PS3 is moving ahead. People can include the Wii all they like, it's not an HD device, and in my opinion serves a completely different market to the PS3/360 HD gaming and video market.

On topic- its not too surprising. I imagine with a price cut announcement at E3, Sony could further pull away from MS by the end of 2011 with a strong first party line up. They just need to market Uncharted 3 as a "absolute-must own system seller". And it seems that Naughty Dog is already looking to expand the multiplayer, so that's definately a good start. Sony just needs to market that!

""Microsoft's head start will give them the market share lead through 2007, but Sony will win in the long run with almost 60 percent of the market by 2012. That's the determination of research firm Strategy Analytics, whose Connected Home Devices service predicts Sony's 121.8 million PS3s will dwarf Microsoft's 59.7 million Xbox 360s in this console generation. The company sees the Nintendo Wii as almost a non-factor with only 23.3 million units sold through 2012.""
I do believe Strategy analytics is the gospel truth right?
