Techland: Dead Island Won't Be Heavy Rain With Zombies

By now, just about everyone on the planet has seen that crazy cinematic trailer for Dead Island.

It really served to amp up expectations but developer Techland doesn't want people jumping to conclusions. Brand manager Vincent Kummer told GamerZines that obviously, the trailer isn't representative of actual gameplay. None of us are surprised, really, and he adds that by now, gamers know the difference between CGI and in-game action. But some just haven't learned, and have made interesting assumptions. Said Kummer:

"We had feedback from people who were like, 'this is going to be Heavy Rain with zombies'. We want to make sure everyone is aware of what we're doing. But then again we have this element, the emotional stuff that people are actually attached to; we have that kind of appeal in the game.

And again, you have to say CGI and in-game is never the same. I think gamers know that by now; that CGI is just to show you a couple of gameplay elements. But in the end it's not going to be the same as what the gameplay is going to be."

That trailer exploded across the Internet when it first arrived and since then, Dead Island has been on everyone's radar. It was also controversial for its depiction of dead children, and allowed everyone to wonder: "what the hell is this game, and what's it really about?" Well, it won't look like that, but it certainly served it's purpose as a promotional trailer, don't you think?

Who was so daft that they thought this was going to be Heavy Rain with zombies?

My money is on it being either a TPS or FPS.

They have already come out and said that the camera would be first person, but it will far from a FPS. It is more action/RPG as you will have to level up your character to access certain things. You will start out just like a regular joe but by the end of the game, you will have leveled up to a beast. I can't wait. I think you should read up before you post what you think it will be.

True, but I was closer than thinking it would be anything like heavy rain.

Yeah God forbid someone make a guess about a game instead of doing a bunch of research to be sure. Sheesh.

its not a shooter.
there is guns in the game, but ammo is verry scarce so most of your killing will be done with melee weapons.
think dead rising but with a story and much more drama!

It was a great trailer. I didn't think the game would be anything like it. I thought that since it began development back in '07, many zombie games have come out and they needed to stand out so they hired a bunch of artists to do a trailer. That's all it was.

I always said, the more emotional the trailer, the more it impacts. Trailers are mostly cheese fests these days with their epic choir, fade in - fade out sequence, quick cuts, music cut to que a terrible one liner which in turn ques in climatic music for the fast cut remainder of the trailer, all ending on some sort of projectile heading towards the camera, but cuts to black and then title before impact.

Something like Journey's trailer, TLG trailer, MGS4 or Silent Hill 2's debut. They stay with you forever.

Techland did good.
From what i understand of the game anyway, it looks good.

So basically every trailer that has a little epic music and some quick cuts in it to get people excited is garbage to you? How much of an artsy fartsy critic are you?

I think this game is going to be more like Condemned 2....but with zombies on the beach. Day one purchase for me so far.

There are still people basing game play off of cgi trailers? That's pretty sad considering every genre of game has cutscenes and they are all done in the same manner.

That's too bad. "Heavy Rain with zombies" actually sounds like it could be pretty good.

Havnt read up on this game which is a shame. Normally id be jumping all over anything zombie related.

But just by reading the psxe communities comments about it, it sounds wicked awesome. Kinda sounds like l4d ( which I effing love ) mixed with a hint of some elder scrolls. I mean if it is a fps/action rpg. So just that and the fact that its got zombies? Friggin sweet.

Ill definately be keeping an ear open about this beastly sounding game now for sure.

Actually after seeing screenshots, brief gameplay and details on how the game will play I'm disappointed because it doesn't seem to have the same serious and emotional tone as the trailer. I've had enough with these goofy zombie games, I want a zombie game that's dead serious and story driven.

It's funny but it's almost like the game has to live up to the trailer.

Well, It's good they're doing they're own things... But there's something about 'Heavy Rain with zombies' that sounds really appealing to me... Well, to be fair, anything related to Heavy Rain is very appealing to me, If only we'd get a 'Heavy Rain with something' for every 10 FPS that come out, I'd be a reaaaaally happy gamer.

There's no way something can be Heavy Rain with zombies.

How can you be like,"Oh Sally what in blood's name happened to you!!!??!?" *Run around the island for 3 days* "Oh Sally you leave me no choice but to kill you!"
HELL NO THAT'S HAPPENING!!

One thing's for sure, that trailer is gonna win "Best Trailer" on PSXE.

hope they still have the texture system they showed off in a tech demo 4 years ago.
showed a zombies head slowly deteriorating as the character attacked it with a axe!
slowly showing the layers of skin cutting through, then the muscle and bone, was really graphic!
thats one thing i wish games would have.
you can shoot your enemies, slice and dice them but you never really see the damage your doing!
i want to see limbs hanging off by a thread, huge gashes, and intestines hanging out!
if that dont get the game banned nothing will!

Guess I'm one of the few people on the planet that hadn't seen this trailer until now then, can't say I've heard anything of the game before either.

Pretty cool trailer though, with the whole rewind-style, but really it says absolutely nothing about the actual game, what kind of game it'll be or how it will look for that matter so I have a hard time getting excited about the game based on that trailer...

Now if you'd tell me it's going to be like Heavy Rain with Zombies - Then I'm in!!
