Sonic Turns 20 Soon, Sega Teases "Something Big"

There was a time when this news would've been some of the biggest of the year. ...my, how the mighty have fallen.

But we always have this tiny spark of hope that Sonic the Hedgehog will once again become part of an elite game. Maybe they'll do something special when the fleet-footed icon turns 20 this summer:

Sega has revealed that "there's something big coming this week to the Sonic Facebook page," and the company will begin celebrating on "Thurs 7th April." Okay, that's tomorrow...if there is an announcement, will it have anything to do with the mysterious Sonic Generations websites? Superannuation found 'em earlier this week and we'd love to know what they're all about. And these days, Sonic isn't really in dire need of resuscitation; he's been doing better this generation, with a few nods to the past and better mechanics. It's still a far cry from the Genesis but then again, everything now is a "far cry" from that period.

We're hoping that whatever Sega wishes to unveil will also cater to those outside the Nintendo universe. Sonic on Nintendo...man oh man, that triggers some arguments back in the day about which was better, the Genesis or the SNES. "Yeah, well Sega has Sonic!" ...things have changed.

Often the problem with 2d side scrolling games, when the rest of the world has gone 3d open worlds and HD realism, blue cartoon hedgehogs have a hard time finding a place to stand.

I loved Sonic games at one time, but now it would have to be a lot different for me. Side scrolling doesn't hold me for more than a couple of minutes anymore.

No, if done right they work. LBP is a testament to this.

2D fighters are also.

It just needs to be done RIGHT. The last Sonic release was 2D if I'm right but it only had like 20 levels?

I mean seriously? 2D platformers need at least 50+ levels to truly be worth the price.

You make a good point with LBP, I haven't played the latest sonic titles, does it have the platform style of lbp or is it still running like original sonic?

I just don't get SEGA. Sonic was nothing but a stinking Mario wannabe. Why can't they just keep the tradition alive and give us Sonic Galaxy one and two? Instead of stars it would be rings, you know the routine. But noooo, they're going to make some big facebook announcement.

Is it so hard to give us 50+ levels and challenging levels?

HA! That picture and the opening paragraph. Love it.

I used to love Sonic. Back in the days of the Master System. Maybe they'll announce the rest of Sonic 4. Sega are doing fairly well lately, and I do like their games, so I'm hoping that whatever this is is worth both their name, and Sonic's. To think... the blue blur is as old as me. Wow, I feel... young.
Peace.

Takes me back when I first played the original as a kid. Can't believe it's been 20 years. The classic Sonic games are the best to me. Who knew back then that Sonic would have the same staying power as Mario

Two words - "Sonic Colors". For those who haven't played it, this game is a hidden gem. Possibly the best outing for Sonic and quite possibly the one title with the greatest potential to bring back the Sonic series to AAA status. I say potential because this title came out only for the Nintendo Wii and NDS. The game play is awesome and so is the World you get to enjoy it in.

With the great reception Sonic Colors has received, Sega only needs to continue the magic it delivered within this title and expand it to HD. Simple as that.

If only they could pull it off on a current-gen console.

The Wii is a great console, but I still feel like the truly hardcore games just don't/can't sell in the West.

I bet it sold well in Japan. But for hardcore games to actually catch on in the West they have to come out on the current-gen consoles.

I feel bad for Donkey Kong Country Returns because it could have sold so well if Nintendo's console wasn't outdated (catered to casuals).

I'll try to get Sonic colors as soon as I can though. Thanks for pointing it out.

Hey look, its the series that just won't die.

Sorry if that's a little harsh for some of you, but this series stopped putting out quality titles a long time ago. Its time for it to end, IMO.

It took Netherrealms more than a decade to get Mortal Kombat right again.

Let's give Sega a chance.

Are people forgetting Sonic 4? One gigantic leap in a great direction and Colours was a gigantic leap in a great AND new direction and both came out at the same time, it should of been the big comeback, but it's up to the controlling media to do that.

Sonic 4 Ep. 2 might be an announcement. And that deserves hype. Sonic has been good again lately.

Happy birthday, childhood maker.

Sonic 1 on genesis was the first video game I ever owned, so Sonic will always be close to me. I hope Sega gives Sonic something special.

I can't believe he's that old, man time fly's by. At least he adapting by getting a Facebook page.
