PSXE Poll Update: Readers Express Diverse Tastes

We figured the vast majority would go with Movies/TV, as it's the closest to gaming, but our readers have diverse tastes.

When we asked after your second-favorite hobby (after video games, of course), most of you did choose the Movies/TV option, but both Sports and Music weren't far behind at all, even if we had hoped for a few more big readers. At any rate, considering the wide range of ages we cater to, we probably shouldn't have been surprised to see such a variety. As they always say in life, it pays to have many different interests; waking up and doing exactly the same thing every single day gets tiring. Worse, it puts you in a rut where motivation and ambition tend to die out. The more you try new things and the more you expand your horizons, the more likely you are to experience the best this world has to offer. Consider it a universal human rule. :)

This week, we'd like to take another step and see how involved you guys are with social Internet sites. You know, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, MySpace, your own blog, etc. Sometimes, it almost seems as if you don't participate in some form of "social" entertainment online, you're seen as an outsider. So how do you keep up-to-date? Or do you simply not care, and just don't bother with any of it?

In my age group it is. 14 year olds. Or maybe its just the people i know....
There is the ridiculous relationships that occur, people who try to act philosophical, the pictures and poses are strange, certain status' are stupid- the BEST example is when somebody posts a sad face, i then ask what is wrong and they say dont worry. WHAT!?
People post pointless things where CLEARLY nobody cares, it is extremely time consuming, and people are CONSTANTLY bored ALL THE DAM TIME, i can go on.
Facebook to other people is probably better because those people are actually mature and reasonable. But the facebook I know is just ridiculous.

Yeah my son is 12 and him and all his classmates are on facebook, chat with eachother via the chat client, play games, etc. I guess it's what you make out of it.

As for me I find Facebook to be a good tool to stay in touch with friends and family, in addition to the groups and event invites. *Finally* a "social site" without the stupid "dating/flirting"-focus.
Plus, as a techie I enjoy the site also from a technical point of view. I'm impressed with the technical achievement of handling such an *enormous* amount of users.

Music's my thing. Always has been, always will be. Been playing piano as long as I can remember, drums for about 12 years now, been teaching myself guitar over the past 5 or so years. I have 90 vinyl records, and over 100 CDs, and I stay away from iTunes or any other digital music distribution service.

As for social things, it's pretty much facebook for me, and I say that with a disclaimer. I don't have many apps and I don't play the games like Farmville and etc. I just use it to keep in touch with friends I don't get to see that often, and it's a quick way to share things with people. I love youtube, but I don't really use the social aspect of it that much...

Same here, music all the way, right after is writing, I've been playing piano for about 8 years now and violin for about 2, man is that a difficult instrument to play.

Well I voted facebook, but because that's the only one I really spend any time on. I basically check it once a day to see if anything interesting happened to anyone in my family, but usually I hate it too because it's full of dumb comments about people's boring lives.

Like I care that someone painted a shelf or made some cookies.

You have to understand I have a couple of family members that repaint their cabinets, shelves, rooms, every day of the week.

They post pictures of table clothes they bought at yard sales, a glass of iced tea.

Don't get me wrong, you spend a few weeks working on something cool, that's all well and good, but if you choose to do something 5 times a week, I don't need you posting it every time, like the people who tell you their kids went pee pee. Hate to break it to you, kids do that.

I hate facebook, i really do. But it's a way to keep people around that I don't see often. It's like a friendship respirator. Plus it's good for exposure, and now that I'm monitoring developers twitter feeds for potential news stories I have to use that too.

BTW, did you know Quantic Dream only lets select people they approve see their tweets? I hope they approve me.

Agreed, while I find facebook to be most often annoying it does keep me in touch with friends I have all over the country, not to mention friends I made while playing MMO's that live in Denmark.

I voted Facebook on this one just because I link a bunch of stuff I like to it. I use the stumble app and love to share stuff I find.

On the last poll I picked tv/movies but I really do enjoy reading. Right now I'm reading Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings. I can't wait for the final book in The Wheel of Time series later this year.

I don't Facebook and only use Youtube to watch, never comment. I do use twitter quite a bit, mostly to follow game developers and sports teams and such, but I do post quite a few tweets. You can follow me @pastenuggs

Reading all the way. I love Music, but I love reading more absolutely.

Facebook, Twitter, Myspace etc... they're all evil. I haven't had a Myspace account in many years, I will never have a Facebook or Twitter page. End of story.

How do I keep up to date? I read the news. Lots, and lots of news.

I have Twitter, but only to use it as an extra gaming tool.

I have almost every major gaming company/developer/publisher listing all their "what's new" & "what's up" info on my twitter page.

Plus I've won lots gaming swag from some of their gaming contests that they post there too, just by having me re-tweet their message.

I actually have all of those except MySpace haha, I know I know, but I absolutely hate texting so I use those instead to talk to people. Should of included Tumblr, I have some pretty cool stuff on there, you guys should swing by and see if you like anything. I use a couple of those but with not hooked on any. Maybe youtube for the rare video game music tracks, but not much else.

Id say reading and music are both tied for my 2nd favorite hobby. I really like reading. But it has to be certain types of books. Fantasy mostly.

Music though, that's a whole different ball game I pretty much like every type of music with a few exceptions. For instance, I like oldies such as little richie and the big bopper, riichie valens (spelled wrong) and other old musicians, all the way to johnny cash and hank williams sr. I also like the doors and the rolling stones and other bands from that era. Some of my most favorite music would have to be classical or operaa, although I don't get to listen to it much. ALLLLLLL the way to bands such as nirvana,and sublime to metallica and the older avenged sevenfold.

So needless to say my musical interest horizon is very broad. As is my reading horizon, only not as much.

So yeah, that's some of my interests/ hobbies in a nut shell.

I voted for "None Of Them"... don't know if I agree with "they are all stupid" though.

I think they serve their purpose for people who want to expose themselves somewhat to the biles of the internet... either way I personally do not belong to any social network hubs. I am simply, not that social, and do not have the time either...

Personally though, I enjoy gaming, retro gaming too, trance music (Digitally Imported - great site) and reading. Just start out on my first read through of JRR Tolkiens' "Lord Of The Rings"... its a fat bible of a book...

That is all, a simple life for a simple guy... for some quite a boring life I think :)

I listen to music a lot, rarely watch movies watch some gaming clips on YouTube and read books on the side. That's basically it for me. I haven't watched a movie since The Expendables.

I regret I didn't vote "reading" on the last vote. I voted "music" simply cause more time is spent listening to music than reading. While I work, do other stuff on the PC or simply just browse the web there's always some favorite tracks on the playlist.
However, reading is more like a true "hobby", can't really say I'd call "listening to music" a hobby...

Nowadays its "The mammoth book of best new sf 23", a collection of short sci-fi stories, thats being enjoyed.

ive lost interest in movies and TV shows because there all drama now.
what happened to cartoon?
only cartoons that are not from the old generation would be family guy, american dad and the clevland show.
which all suck donkey balls!
same goes for movies, i use to go every week and always left enjoying the movie.
went to see limitless the other day, it was ok, but not worth the 20 buck entry fee!
then went to see the adjustment bureau which was pure crap!
last movie i saw that i can say i honestly enjoyed and was worth watching was inception.
i must admit though i am looking to seeing scream 4 next week.
finally a horror movie thats not all about torture porn!

Reading wins with me.Quite rare in my age group,but I couldn't care less.Music is right behind it.Been playing an ancient acoustic quitar for about 2 years,I need a new one.Can't afford a drum setup yet.

On the new poll,Facebook.It's the easiest way for me to check news about things that might interest me.Friends I have there are actual friends in real life.And they're not that many.Facebook games are something I will never play.
After that is Youtube,there is some quality user content there.

I'm a reader, somewhat. The workload is hectic so I spend most of my time awake studying, some things you cross are quiet interesting. I have a couple'a novels gathering dust. I wonder way Socializing wasn't one of the choices though. Hahaha.

I'm a screenwriter, so I'm a complete social network whore. I use Twitter to chat about my projects and follow my favourite celebrities, I use Facebook mostly for family and friends as well as for making fan pages for my projects, YouTube is mostly for posting videos of concerts or Just Cause 2 gameplay (I plan to use that site for more soon, though) and I use Tumblr for posting news and just general thoughts. The only one that I no longer have is MySpace because unless you're a musician, that site is pretty useless. All these sites are plenty useful if you know how to use them as tools. I use to be a complete anti-social guy, too, so I know where a lot of you are coming from. They're handy for spreading the word on certain subjects, though, and when you're an inspiring writer, you quickly become thankful for them.

Outside of being a father, work and gaming, I am heavily involved youth sports and have been coaching for quite some time.

When it comes to being an athlete, well, not so much!!

I loathe the online Social networks. I'll use specific services, like watching something on YouTube, but not the social aspect.

First of all, these places are like a primordial soup of phishing and social engineering malwares. Secondly they are generally about as secure as going to sleep at night with your front door ajar. Third, they take away from game time. Finally fourth, they all -Facebook especially - lack any real positives. Most folks I know use two facebook accounts, one that they allow their family and most friends to see, and one that they allow only specifically selected close friends see (plus all their Facebook gaming buddies). That way they can indulge in their Farmville addition without anyone that matters knowing that they spend their waking hours farming virtual goods.

Considering that the Internet hosts the Eye of Moron, I also cannot understand why people expose themselves to that threat in things like Facebook or Twitter. It's just not worth it. I feel like there's just no return on the time and effort invested.

Facebook mostly to keep in touch with family & friends over sea, IM for free internet calling-especially international. Boarding and music is all the way up their for me, both have a great connection when it comes to way I ride.
Reading and TV/movies, I love to watch Everybody loves Raymond.

I think PSXE can be classed as a Social Netwoking Site but it is mainly our networking site if you get what I mean us regular readers and commenter's speak to one another. Sometimes we get new people that stay and become a regular part of the community.

I come here for my gaming news and also for the different peoples reviews and opinons on stuff.

I use the forums too, you should try it out those that havn't it's a great place like the front page is great here too.

I use Facebook and Twitter and Youtube to look for stuff, post less on twitter though and even less on Facebook. Facebook is used to send old friends a quick message and see what members of the family are up to. Sometimes I'll post a pic of my holiday if I have been anywhere decent or seen anything or anyone special that's it. I used to play some of the games on there but they got boring quickly.
