PS3 To Receive Google Chrome?

I personally have no use for it, nor do I want to use my PS3 as a browser. Already have a good PC.

However, anything that makes the PS3 a better and more well rounded system, the better.

So obviously, I'm all for this.

The only benefit to a great ps3 browser would be using Hulu on your tv, but most of those shows are available OnDemand with most cable services, and a large amount of people who want to watch old shows on their ps3/tv have NetFlix anyway.

I dont think i've ever opened my ps3's browser.

I concur. There have actually been times when I was playing a game and wanted to look up something online real quick, then get back to my game. I can honestly say that if the browser was better I would actually use it more. The browser is still horrid imho so that is what stops me.

i'll take chrome or firefox, i just ask that they allow the ps3 to play youtube videos or other sites in hd, its annoying when something with hd output isnt allowed access to something so simple

A better browser would be huge. The PS3 with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse is a very viable browsing platform on the main TV in a home, and it allows that TV to belong to the new Internet TV fad.

My wife has a crunchyroll membership and we watch a fairly decent amount of anime on our TV, more or less simulcast with Japan, despite the TV being about 5 years old now. Google chrome as the browser would be very helpful in maintaining that.

The other aspect of Chrome being on PS3 (if it comes to pass) is that it opens the doors to Google's cloud based applications, which extends the PS3 even further.

Indeed it would, Highlander. And providing it's a full version and not a gimped one the firefox/chrome plugin library makes the browser almost a software platform in itself, giving an almost endless amount of apps for the ps3.

This would be *awsome*. Here's hoping it comes with java support too. :)

last time i watched on crunchy roll, its videos were compatible with the ps3 browser. now i just download. i just found out recently that its compatible with facebook player now too.

No one should have to pay for basic online usability. To be a PS+ feature, it had better be much more than just a browser.

Can you imagine if we had to pay to play our games online? That would be awful. It would end my career of online gaming.

I use the browser quite a bit, I always catch Conan and sometime the Daily Show and Colbert Report on CTV's site here in Canada. The quality is very good (Netflix quality) and I'm able to watch it full-screen. Other networks, even though they use Flash, don't seem to work on the current PS3 browser, I'm hoping Chrome with change that!

Also, I would be nice if Youtube wasn't locked at 240p on the PS3 browser.

When I first got my PS3 I did go online through the browser quite a bit. Just to see if it could be done and for goofs really. It was indeed painful. I got to wondering though... could the PS3 get viruses? I did visit a few, you know, pawn sites. I wondered if I would mess up my PS3 so I stopped. Anyone know if it can get infected?

I believe the technically correct answer is that there are no known viruses developed for the ps3, and possibly unlikely it will be made. But theoretically speaking I do not believe the ps3, or any other computer OS is immune to exploits.

PS3s running firmware 3.6 are effectively immune to traditional viruses since only properly signed and encrypted executable can run on the system. A malware script (often included in the virus classification) could run inside the browser, but it's highly doubtful that it could remain on the system, or active once the browser is closed. Also since the browser runs within a non-privileged executable, there are limits to what the system will allow any malware script to do.

Firmware 3.55 and below could be open to running an actual virus since a homebrew executable can be written and signed and run on any PS3 that does not run firmware 3.6 or above. Firmware 3.56 is something of a halfway house because some of the keys it uses are known and some are not. Either way, on a fully up to date PS3, there's virtually no chance at all of a virus attack.

Like I said though, a browser based scripting attack could occur, but I don't think it can do anything to damage the system.

... provided that there are no holes to exploit, High. Theoretically it's not required to execute any code on the system outside the browser if there is a security flaw in the browser itself. And the ps3 is likely to be in a (local) network with other computers. The browser can do calls to those machines. Could you make a script that made the browser do a local network call, and return the reply? How could that be exploited? Perhaps the microsoft filesharing protocol running on that laptop in the livingroom has some funny little security flaws too, and will respond to a browsers call given a specific port?

I'm pushing it far now, but my point is that a security flaw may not only be a danger to the machine it's featured on.

That was kind of my point though, the danger from viruses on the PS3 is limited to script based malware attacks. Sure it's possible there could be holes in the browser security that might allow a properly written script to obtain some information about the local network. However, a traditional virus cannot attack the Ps3, and a malicious script is extremely unlikely to be able to harm the PS3. It's possible that an attacker could use an exploit in the PS3 browser to fire requests at other systems on the local network, But that is a relatively remote danger since it's much harder to script an attack against an unknown local network through an intermediate host. That doesn't mean it's impossible of course, I just feel the danger is extremely remote at this point.

I would love for this to happen. Sometimes my wife likes to use my laptop, but I want to get online too, so this would make life much easier. I use the ps3 browser on occasion and it can be a hassle.

A good browser would make it a lot easier to tell people that you can surf the web on the ps3 and not have to add, it sucks, but it's doable.

i use the browser on mine every now and then. my cousin uses it a lot as he doesnt have a computer. a few of my buddies use it also. would be nice to see an update to it though since i cant remember the last time they actually did something with it.

As long as it would support flash, it's perfect. I know Chrome does HTML5, and there's a flash plugin, but I'm not sure if they'd need to make a new plugin just for the PS3 version or not.

Let me tell you though, I'd reinvest in a wireless keyboard and mouse and use the browser way more than I currently do.

I do all of my web-stuff on PC, but Chrome addition to the PS3 can only be a benefit. I've used the current browser several times (just kinda seeing what's what really), wasn't hugely impressed with how it functioned with the rest of the web though.

Good on Sony, keep finding new ways to support the PS3, that makes it accessible to a wider audience.

Chrome on my PS3 would be a BIG deal for me! I don't have a laptop or a computer anywhere near my home theater, it's all up to the PS3 and that PS3 browser just plain stinks.

This is a long time gripe for me and I, for one, would be really excited for an upgrade like this.

I would probably use it if this was true or did happen. Not sure though as like some have said I have a laptop and a desktop in the same room. It would be nice to have a 46" screen though.

It would also be good to be able to sync it since I use Chrome on both my comps.

I would be ecstatic with Google Chrome on the PS3. My PC is old and hoary and my PS3 is faster but the current browser is poor. With Google Chrome and it's plug-ins, perhaps I can once again see DailyMotion videos on my PS3.

You know I'm not going to lie...I'm a pretty big Firefox fanboy. Well at least I used to be...but now the tides have changed as I see that Firefox continuously lags when I have add-ons on and such. Firefox 4 has made its improvements, but it's just no where near as fast as Chrome is right now.

I've love nearly everything Google provided before and now I can say I fully love Chrome despite my early Firefox fanboy days.

I have yet to get an Android phone...though to be honest I'd take any Japanese Cell phone such as the SHARP SH 05 over any American/Korean/Taiwanese smart phone.

But if this were to happen, I certainly feel it would be great. Besides aren't there a bunch of Sony-Google partnerships going on? Wasn't there some Sony TV that runs on Google software or something? I'm pretty sure it's going to happen. And then the whole XPeria Play Android thing?

Hahaha same, I love how the ps3 can process a cutting edge, blu-ray 3d video game flawlessly, but when you try to load a webpage you have wait 30 seconds per page, only to find out half of it can't even be displayed, or the ps3 can't handle all the javascript, I mean seriously?...

This wouldn't be all that surprising if it were true. Sony and Google are currently on very good terms. And besides, it would be very beneficial to both companies. Google's fledgling browser could certainly use more exposure, and the PS3's web browser still has much room for improvement.

On a side note thats kind of related, the other day I was just thinking about ps4, I know it won't be here for a LONG time, but I was wondering how they would be able to revoluntionise the ps3.
I mean it's a beast, has been a beast and will continue to be a beast.

So how can you top it?
So I came up with a theory that ps4 will be a desktop replacement, obviously aimed at video games but able to serf the web just as quick and easily that your laptop or tower does. Maybe they're using google chrome as a test to see how well the ps3 can handle it, and then use the same idea as the chrome os (Where everything is online, the laptop is simply a modem that connects you to the cloud.)

I'm talking about never going to a videogame store, unless obviously you like a physical copy of a game.

Everything will be in a cloud, you turn on the system it logs you in you jump in a game on the cloud, no downloading, no installing, no PATCHES :D

I mean to top the ps3 you kinda gotta do something as amazing as cloud gaming would be, like onlive, I demoed it and it was flawless. What the future should be.

I just hope retailers don't throw pockets of cash at sony to stop an idea like this. I wouldn't put it past gamestop to keep the next gen system's mainstream games physical. But I also wouldn't put it past sony to say f-u we're going to do what will revolutionize the industry.

No I've heard this as well, but I think the os is intended more for gaming, I have a feeling the ps4 will be a cloud console, much like chrome os is a cloud operating system. Imagine never having to go out to buy a game, never installing game data, or install a update patch :)

Plus I think chrome os will hold it's own against windows 8, though sony's support can't hurt.

I'd totally rock out a better web browser. I have a perfectly fine pc with a 24" monitor, but that's weak sauce compared to my 52"... Nothing like Epic Mealtime on the big screen! I also would love better script support that a new browser would bring on. Pandora seems to treat my ps3 as a mobile unit, giving me a less functional layout. When I'm jamming out, I like to keep my living rooms 5.1 busy streaming/networking my audio, so my ears don't explode when I frequent back to my pc..

So yeah, a better browser would make my living room and guests much happier!

Well my point is Chrome isn't as great as it's cracked up to be, it's frozen on me numerous times with a stable internet connection and a brand new SONY VAIO Z Series 2011 laptop. I have every browser installed, IE9, Opera, Safari, Firefox 4, and yes Chrome. I personally prefer Opera and Safari, the most reliable and honestly with the PS3 it could benefit greatly form Opera's compression technology Opera Turbo. With the lack of a decent amount of RAM on board it would help a great deal for something like the PS3.

Seriously, the Chrome problems you're having are more than likely not the browser's fault. My wife's laptop refuses to run Firefox reliably, and yet my ancient XP system runs it flawlessly - if a little slowly. From what I have seen, Chrome is not quite Firefox "stable", but far better than Internet Explorer "stable".

Well maybe tools wasn't the best description, maybe people who brag too much about knowing so little. <---That equals a tool for me or maybe a Browser fanboy if you will. Everyone praises Chrome like it's the holiest of browsers when in my experience and a few other friends of mine really can't stand it. My friend Quinn Chrome works flawlessly on his XP system as well Highlander. IDK in my personal experience it's not the best one out there. I just hear so much about how great it is, and I'm just like Dude it's a browser...chill. And honestly IE9 has treated me better than Firefox and Chrome, it's actually a nice experience TBH. I just wish it had add-ons like Chrome, Firefox, Safari , and opera haha.

I think it would be a good idea if they have a macbook like trackpad on the ps4 controller for surfing the web and selecting menus. Maybe something like the trackpad on the back of the ngp.

Firefox. But I also work on a single closed network (user/admin), so the critical programs are protected from viruses, anyway. I got a virus a little while back but it only nailed the user side; the Admin side was fine and I could work until the user account was fixed.

I would love Chrome on the PS3, as it isn't very resource heavy and it's fast. Plus I don't have a computer 5 feet away from me =P

I would love this simply because what if I need it and I'm too lazy to go grab my laptop or go to my pc? Especially if I have plugged my ps3 in the living room and not my room. It's always good to have a good browser at hand to check facebook updates (See who wants to have a match?) or simply to look for gameplay hints whilst being stuck on a certain level for hours.

It would be great if we got this and perhaps in the near future skype for chat if there's no gameplay chat :S

This would be great if we could have a better browser as I've complained about it for some time now.

But if I had a choice, I'd rather see my Firefox4 with AdBlock+ on the Ps3 too.

Would be great. Not necessary but would be great. Even if we don't get Chrome at least the ps3 is the only console where you can actually browse online. You can with the Wii, but seriously?

I prefer Firefox, but hey Chrome's not bad.

I used it a lot when I didn't have my own laptop. But now it really sucks, it's slow and it freezes. I only use it if I'm on my bed and too lazy to get up.

I may late but I believe I read somewhere that Chrome is currently the most secure browser. That is definitely a determining factor. Not to mention the low memory footprint.

Chrome= Apps, Android, Google Voice...ect. Keep advancing my PS3 Sony.

The issue for me is Sony lambasted us with hype that were buying an "all in one" wonder machine... while it is a very capable machine; the one crucial component missing was a really good able browser.

3 reasons for why the browser fails:-

1] Lack of internal PS3 ram - if you open up task manager on your PC and look at how much memory is eaten up having multiple tabs open in Chrome or Firefox, it is similar on the PS3. The PS3 has to use a lot of internal ram when browsing, and part of it being so slow and unresponsive is when you see the PS3 thrashing the hard disk madly due to having to use virtual ram on disk. I have run many tests by going to challenging websites to see how the PS3 copes with a lot of multimedia components running on the page, and due to its lack of ram, it fails pretty spectacularly.

2] Lack of support for the latest web technologies. No matter how much you deny it, it is in Sony's best interest to be a few iterations behind when it comes to Flash and other web based technologies so as to have some level of control on what you can do through the browser. There are many many browser based Flash games available on the latest Flash iteration that the PS3 browser does not support.

3] Sony, like any corporation, would rather you not play free games through the web browser... they would rather you purchase all your entertainment through them on their machine. Therefore a cobbled browser goes some ways in achieving that. Make the browser bearable, but don't make it comfortable to use.

As I have said before, the advertised features initially tempted me to purchase the PS3 for the sole reason that i could conveniently have PC and Gaming functionality in one device, reducing clutter and really creating an awesome "all in one" piece of tech - of course all that blew up in my face...

If Sony fix the browser up by including Chrome, it will go a long way in repairing the lost Linux that I was happily using before I was forced to update.

Points 2 and 3 I wouldn't srgu with. Point 1 though, I have to argue. The PS3 is designed to be a high performance media machine biased to games. For that purpose the high speed XDR RAM is perfect for the job. Remembering how expensive the system was to build, and how expensive XDR memory was when the PS3 launched, you have to see why there's only 256MB. Not to mention that for a system that is only running a browser and minimal resident OS, 256MB isn't really *that* bad for the majority of browsing tasks. The only time my browser memory commit jumps past 200-250MB is when I'm running a FLASH application, they're just system hogs.

Sure more memory would have been nice, but 5 years ago when they started manufacture, doubling the memory would have cost Sony another $50 per unit (at least), and so it was just not going to happen.

I'd prefer Firefox (the source is there for them to do it), but Chrome would also be a lot better than the glorified mobile phone browser they currently use.

I use the PS3 web browser a lot. I download podcasts from gaming sites straight to the music section. I also use it to go to Crunchyroll.com (subscription anime site that does simulcast with Japan, it's amazing!) (though it can only run 480p, it's unable to do 720p) and megavideo (<--- alot). Occasionally youtube. That browser truly needs this google update as a person who uses it often.
