Activision: Guitar Hero "Just On Hiatus"

You didn't really think Guitar Hero was gone forever, did you?

Activision said they wouldn't release any new installments this year, and none are planned for the near future. But that doesn't mean it's gone forever: in a recent GamesIndustry.biz interview, Activision VP of developer relations and acquisitions said the blockbuster franchise is only on "hiatus:"

"Actually, just to clarify, we're just putting Guitar Hero on hiatus; we're not ending it. We're releasing products out of the vault. We'll continue to sustain the channel; the brand won't go away. We're just not making a new one for next year; that's all."

What began as a multi-billion-dollar series has now become a liability in many ways. Activision cited music licenses as one of the many disagreeable costs associated with the games in question, and gamers and analysts cite over-saturation of the market. Music-based games were everywhere and eventually, interest just died out.

That being said, it could rebound. And that appears to be Activision's plan: wait for a better time and perhaps more advanced technology.

So I'm guessing the next one will release January 1st 2012.

Now if only they would learn that over producing a game isn't subject to genre. hmmmm.

I'd still rather have True Crime, but whatever it is what it is I guess.

Hey, speaking of True Crime... What's United Front Games up to nowadays? They seem to be a decent studio with Modnation, and the aforementioned, and now sadly cancelled, title under their belts. I don't think that they'll be silly enough to partner with Activision again. Maybe they're the new HS2 developer? I'm intrigued now.

My music genre activity these days almost entirely consists of Expert Pro Keys mode in Rock Band 3. Being a lifelong pianist, it's a dream come true, two of my favorite activities combined into one.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is this: Take your time, Activision. I'm not going to miss Guitar Hero one bit.

they did not stop it, artists stopped it!
antivision made allot off the series, but the lawsuits from artists claiming unrightful use is through the roof!
this is what i cant understand about antivision.
they have heaps of really popular series that have the potential to bring in COD like sales!
so they sit on them.
but then they release sh*t after sh*t after sh*t!
the bond series if done well could be freaking massive!
true crime HK was looking fan freaking tastic so why the %$#@ did yous cancel it!?
they say its a fantastic game, we have confidence it could rate in the high 8s.
so why the hell can it?
it defies logic!

So wait, you're telling me this PoS series is just on hiatus, yet you guys cancelled the excellent-looking True Crime? I'm astounded by the lengths to which Activision will go to milk their series dry. And the sad thing is, with this kind of strategy (milking it dry, then waiting a while and starting the cycle of popularity and milking all over again) it'll be hard for them to not make even more money off of this kind of crap.
