PlayStation 3 Tops 50 Million, Move Over 8 Million

Sony has just released the updated sales numbers for both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Move.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) has announced that cumulative global sales of their flagship console have reached 50 million as of March 29. They also revealed that PlayStation Move has hit 8 million units worldwide, as of April 3; both statistics are "sell-in numbers." They also reconfirmed the 75 million PlayStation Network accounts we heard about earlier this week, and added that currently, the PSN features 105,988 total pieces of downloadable content. In reminding us of the PS3 bonuses, the release talks about the inclusion of stereoscopic 3D and says there are currently 89 software titles that support the fancy new feature.

As for Move, which launched in September 2010 in North America, Europe and Asia, and in October in Japan, the 8 million sold is encouraging. As of now, there are 155 games that support Move in some fashion, and that includes titles like Killzone 3, MLB 11: The Show, and the upcoming SOCOM 4. Overall, thanks to "strong support from third-party developers and publishers worldwide," the PS3 boasts an impressive library of 2,128 titles, with over 480 million units sold. And oh yes, the exclusives that distance the PS3 from the competition.

Okay, there's your update. Does the PS3 have a chance of catching up to the PS2 at some point down the road? We say no...

No the PS3 doesn't have a chance to catch the PS2 because the PS2 didn't have the competition like the PS3 does.

It's not the competition. It's the price. PS2 by its 3rd year or so was like $150.

More people in other countries could afford a ps2 at that price too.

OK, but in a 10 year life cycle it's hit 50 million units after 4 years. The PS3 can most certainly sell at least another 50 million units in the remaining 6+ years of it's anticipated life. I can remember when just about every 'respected' analyst and commentator doubted that the lifetime sales of the sp3 would ever even hit 50 million units. About two years ago I wrote a long post here and projected 50 million by the end of the 4th full year (including Europe) and suggesting an eventual sell through of 110-120 million units. I'll definitely stand by that projection. It may not eclipse the PS3, but 110-120 million units is still a heck of a lot of product. considering the WiiHD will be announced in June, Wii sales are about to fall off a cliff. In the long run, the PS3 may well stand triumphant as the best selling games console of this generation. Actually, I'll go one better than that, and say that it *will* be the best selling console of the generation.

Max has a point but beating the Wii and XBox360 this generation will be a piece of cake, MS and Nintendo (to a lesser extent) will drop support for their consoles the moment the new ones come out but, not Sony. I doubt the X360 will ever reach 100 mil or the Wii for that matter, even thou its more likely for the Wii...

PS3 won't be another PS2 because quality Japanese games which actually decorated PS2's library were far and few between this time around and now with the recent crisis there it's virtually impossible to achieve the same goals(there was an impact to everything there). Still, if Nintendo just releases a Wii HD instead of a completely updated platform and Xbox 360 is blinded with Kinect shovelware, PS4 will crush any competition.

Not so rare as you might imagine, you simply have to know where to look. The biggest issue is the major producers of Japanese games were poached by Microsoft before the PS3 even launched. Plus, remember that PS3 games are region free, and even if the online portion prevents you from playing with people outside your region, you can still play PS3 games purchased from whatever region you please.

Happy to contribute, after saving for a few months I finally got a slim. I now have a mgs4 b/c model and a slim.

That is awesome. Glad to be along for the ride. I also like that some of the games you can use with the Move can also be controlled with a regular DS. I have a Move and sometimes I just like to use a controller. It helps open it up to more variety of people unlike the Wii were it's motion or nothing.

I just got my new GameInformer and it has an article that talks about the Kinect/Move sales. It said that the Kinect has SOLD around 10Million units whereas the Move has only SHIPPED 4Million units to retailers.

Those numbers are seriously flawed if what Sony said is correct. I would definitely lean towards what Sony says. It seems like all forms of media love to project Microsoft sales are burying Sony sales.

Personally, I don't know anyone that has a Kinect but I know several people that have a Move. That's just me. I love these numbers for Sony though. Keep it up.

Well, Sony counts this thing we call "world" and MS counts only North America and England since the X360 barely exists outside these two places. No doubt by the end of the year the PS3/Move combo will be way ahead of X360/Killnect...

Yeah, you really have to take into account that since the Kinect was hacked on only the 2nd day of it's release, that since then, tons of modders & hackers bought the Kinect just to use on non-360 side projects, like that Kinect sensing Roomba vacuum cleaner.

There's tons of YouTube videos of the Kinect's that have been hacked & used for everything, but it's original M$ purpose.

Hard to say, their defect rate is so high it might have at least a few million consoles in the dumpster plus the 1 million or so they banned because of the mods... I'd say right now if you are talking about hardware you can still play games on, the PS3 is at least even or ahead by one Million or so...

That depends on how much more powerful than the PS3 it is. If it's just as powerful, supports 3D and has motion gaming, and has a Blu-ray drive, how different is it really from a PS3? It needs to be something really special or it will fall short this time around. Not saying its impossible, Nintendo knows how to surprise the heck out of the industry :)

there are several articles saying that it will be more powerful than the ps3/360, and also support blu-ray. there is also mention of some kind of screen built into the controller.

looks like next gen is coming soon. it's hard to imagine nintendo getting the hardcore gamers back, but stranger things have happened. nobody thought this gen would turn out like it did.

Please describe what exactly a more powerful Wii HD system will be capable of delivering to gamers that the PS3 does not already deliver.

It will not matter whether the hardware is as powerful or more powerful than either 360 or PS3 if it delivers nothing more than the PS3 and 360 already provide. Especially as both the PS3 and 360 will have lower price points and a large library of games and teams of developers familiar with them.

wii 2s suppose to have a HD LCD screen in the controller.
now thats going to suck in allot of people!
i seriously doubt this is true, but your suppose to be able to use the controller as a handheld device.
transfer games from your console onto it, and play your wii 2 games on your controller!
oh now that would be so freaking cool!

If what you say about their controller is correct, I have to wonder about given the cost of putting an HD screen plus gaming hardware into a controller shaped object (hello PSP). That's not a cheap exercise and if the console is supposed to be more powerful than 360 or PS3 it will be costly enough as is without making $100-$150 controllers.

yea, wont be cheap.
but if the rumored specs are right they would compensate for it, there in between the 360 and ps3.
that hardware was outdated 4 years ago, so ninty would be stupid to release with it now!
i was excited when i heard there releasing a new system, common sense told me it wont be that powerful but i did not want to believe it.
how are they suppose to keep up with the competition with releasing hardware so similar to the competition?
ok they have different games, but if your going to run in the same market as someone you have to outdo them.
releasing 4 year old hardware is not a way to outrun your competition!

And for the record, black ops is now a rare sight in the ps3 recently, only in when others are with me. Final fantasy 13, dead space 2 are my main games at the moment.

Yup, I certainly know that feeling ever since my fat 60(640GB now) PS3 died & threw me off KZ3, with my disc still stuck inside in mid-March.
You ever see a grown 58 year man cry????

But my departed fat princess just left the USPS sorting facility in St. Paul, MN on her trek to Mecca(Minneapolis) to be resurrected.

And she should be in the hands of the repair shop doctors later today(that is, if their Playstation-3 Trauma Unit is open on Saturdays).

just wanted to add. as far as i know the 360 has always been on an even lvl (sales wise) with PS3 here in the UK. I honestly dont remember ever seeing the 360 outselling PS3 since PS3 launched. Even with the high price point here in the PAL regions PS3 has always faired better than 360 but still slightly behind the Wii. The biggest problem for Sony is trying to make up the 1 year head start in NA where M$ was able to build up a solid fanbase very quickly from people waiting for PS3 to launch. EU and Japan have always been considered Sony teritory because of software adoption rates and sales of consoles in the past.
All in all these are very positive numbers and even though they took a hit to start with SCE stratergy seems to be paying off big time.

As for project sales for 6 years ahead i reckon that at the current price point Sony will reach the figure of 100 million easy but i reckon with a few price drops, even if it's one ever 2 year for the next 6 there is no reason why PS3 cant do simular numbers to PS2. That is assuming of course that the PS2 stops selling so strongly and more price drops on ps3 actually happen.

I think that Sony (and MS) will have a $50 price reduction on the models including HDDs this year. That will put them at $250. PS3 selling at $250 will definitely generate an additional push in sales, and I think that will push PS3 to the 110-120 million mark.

naw 4real though im jus enjoying the ps3 run & i still havent interacted with move or 3d yet.

*of topic checked my email today & there some speculation nintendo is in process of wii 2..... u kno... i think the wii was created for the Japs cause of there environment since its so packed over there. if wii2 is true i take back my beliefs that there working on something that could run with ps4 & the next xbox.

I think the PS3 has hit it's stride and will continue due to future price cuts (along with amazing exclusives). The only thing stopping the PS3 from selling more, I believe, are gamestore employees who keep telling people to get a 360 and/or Kinect over the PS3 and/or Move.
Also, on the Wii2 thing, I'm starting to feel that Nintendo created the Wii as an experiment (a low-cost, high-profit one) that shocked even them, because they were a little battered from the previous gen with the Gamecube, and now that they've made enough bank, will introduce themselves to the current gen with the appropriate system. With the Wii they knew they were gona be behind all along in terms of raw power, and with limited funds, still needed to compete in the current gen market. Slickest move in the gaming industry I've seen. That was like a Hadouken to everyone's chest.

hahaha!!! the same people comment on this forum always (loser), I got a question how many ps3 sony gave free everytime wen they sold a sony tv. that's why a got a ps3 (to be honest I just watch blu ray movies on it) multiplayer is better in xbox 360 plus "ESPN" after 6 years now you guy say ps3 is "the shit" I think is to late and everybody is ready for the new consoles generation bluray came too late. so the future is donwload,stream etc. just look the music market everybody got a Ipod
