Rocksteady: The "Batman Experience" In Arkham City

Batman isn't all about beating on baddies. He has to play detective, too.

Many are looking forward to Batman: Arkham City this year and while we all love that streamlined, enjoyable combat mechanic, the game will also boast other elements that make up the "Batman Experience." In speaking to UK publication XBOX World 360, Rocksteady's Dax Ginn spoke about the more slow-paced aspect of the production:

"When we think about all the things that make up the 'Batman Experience,' one of the great things we're doing at Rocksteady is that we're not just satisfied with having him beat up people and fly around. We want to deal with the detective and forensic side of him. It's the unexpected elements that are really intriguing and loaded with unique gameplay potential.

Everywhere that's open to the sky-is open to the player from the off. They can go anywhere they want. That was the emotional feeling we wanted to convey: you're Batman so you can do whatever you want. It's an empowering feeling that Arkham Asylum didn't deliver on because it was such a linear, tight and tense story. We pace out the narrative through internal encounters, we use them to bookmark the experience, but there is loads of content out there on the streets and you can engage with all that in any way you want."

Being in Arkham City will indeed be a lot different than running around the Asylum; the extra freedom involved will be entertaining, and that forensic stuff acts as a nice contrast to the beat-'em-up portions. And the end result? Yeah, we're guessing it'll be sweet.

Sounds like a good way to grow the brand, some sort of natural progression as opposed to forcing the franchise in one direction or another.

It's game on now with LA Noir. I was actually pretty disappointed with this aspect in Arkham Asylum. It didn't feel like I was a "detective" at all.

I have so many doubts about this game, an open world running on UE3? Do you get to drive the batmobile? The batwing? I've never seen a UE3 game with good driving.

I want a great open world detective style Batman game that is dark and gritty. I'll definitely be waiting on the reviews though.

You've got a point. Driving in the UE3 is terrible. See Borderlands and Enslaved for recent examples.

Me too. But I was disappointed. I want to play the game, not create it.

I am excited for this this but they are really starting to sound like they are reaching for the stars with it a bit. Hope it doesn't over reach and come off unpolished.

Hopefully there is no morgue this time. That creeped me out every time I had to go in there.
