"No Difference" Between PS3 And 360 Versions Of Battlefield 3

It's a common question amongst gamers these days: "Will the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions be the same?"

When it comes to Battlefield 3, most all the footage we've seen thus far has been taken from the PC version. Then there was one little tidbit from the developer, who said the PS3 version "has a lead by offloading GPU w/SPUs." But in speaking to MSXBOX-World, DICE boss Patrick Bach seeks to reassure everyone by saying the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the highly anticipated shooter will be the same.

"Our philosophy is to not to talk about things we cannot prove and this is true also when it comes to the quality of the Xbox 360 version of the game. All of the core game systems (animation, destruction, rendering, audio etc.) are the same on all platforms so there will not be a difference when it comes to the general experience of the game. Some technicalities will of course be different due to larger memory and the graphics cards you can have on the PC. We are trying to push the envelope of FPS games in general and this will be obvious in all versions of the game. Looking back to what quality we achieved with Battlefield Bad Company 2 last year we do know how to make high quality games on all platforms."

Now, there's little doubt that Battlefield 3 will look fantastic on every platform; it's really only a matter of small things that may excel due to hardware differences. Currently, it seems the graphical benchmark for multiplatform FPSs has been set by Crytek's Crysis 2, but from what we've seen of DICE's project, the bar could be raised yet again by the end of the year.  And all gamers on all platforms should be happy.

I know the difference, whether you see it or not.

Difference is, I'm playing it on the best console on the market.

Agreed Underdog. I'm pretty stoked for this one, it will likely be my last Military Shooter for awhile. I really have no doubts about DICE Bad Co. 2 still runs well on my PS3 when the PSN isn't bugging out, anyone else having issues?

If you buy Battlefield 3 instead of MW3 you rule, plus you won't support mediocrity by skipping CoD, a win/win!

Definately note the bolded text, especially the word "generally"
Also note the source is speaking to a Xbox userbase.
It simply isn't in the pubs/devs best interested to cause social unrest by declaring platform superiority. There's tender and easily irratable feelings out there and I'm sure devs dont want to answer, or look at, the hate mail.

Now I dont think its beyond the realm of possibilty that the two platforms could have near identical BF3. But in light of DICE dev presentation slides it is curious.
Though, I will say, games like Split Second and Blur offloaded lighting and rendering tasks to SPUs and, yet, the 360 version still edged them out, with Split Second dev,Blackrock, giving credit to the "very powerful" Xenos GPU.

This will be an interesting development to watch.

yes, there is only so much those spus can do becuase of their limmitted memory. i think the weak gpu in the ps3 combined with its limmitted vram is why we always see the 360 version edge out the ps3 version.

sorry, don't believe any multiplat developer when they make this claim. crytek said the same thing about crysis2. the ps3 version came in at a lower resolution, and an overall less stable framerate. ea has been good to the ps3, but most of their games still look better on the 360.

if you look at the the multiplat face offs on places like the digitlal foundry the 360 has won 229 faceoffs vs 11 for the ps3. as a ps3 owner i have become conditioned to expect the ps3 version to be inferior. i guarantee the 360 version will be better somehow. i'd bet my house on it.

Dang man, your house?
DF does use proprietary technology to capture images directly from the frame buffer. They also use state of the art video capturing technology that counts frames and screen tearing.

I will say it's fair to acknowledge that many of those wins are scrutinized under the most detailed conditions. Conditions that I'd image many gamers wouldn't care too much for either way.
I, for one, would like having the best version of multiplats so I do go out of my way to determine the best version before I plan a buy. And, as a result, the majority of my multiplats are on 360

yeah, i think there is a noticable difference between the ps3 and 360 version of crysis 2. the ps3 version is at the lowest resolution, and that's why it looks so blurry. it looks good for a multiplat, but nowhere near as good looking as the 360 version.

@jawk

i'd still bet my house the ps3 version will be inferior somehow. unless their name is squareenix or konami i never believe them. didn't dice do bfbc2? that game didn't look so great and had a lot of screen tearing. moh didn't look so hot either, and dice was part of that.

multiplats have improved, but i still see differences. i don't think i'll ever be able to accept inferior multiplats or stop complaining about it. especially when we get these reassurances from developers. i think its a valid topic of concern as a ps3 owner. you might feel the differently about the matter, and i would not presume to tell you how to feel about it. you call the differences negligible, but i feel differently about it. i did not say they were big differences, or that ps3 multiplats are terrible. i just feel they are not up to parity yet. mulltiplat games just look bettter on the 360. i would call the differences small, but noticable.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 looks the same on both consoles, i looked at both videos of it on high resolution and i don't see any difference about it.

And you can't forget some people usually use color correction to make the videos look more better than what they really are.

There are multiplats that look better on PS3 than 360 and vice versa, it's not really that bad as you claim it to be. GTA4 was better on PS3 than 360 as Crysis 2 was better on 360 than PS3.

Excelsior, Apologies. Ignore my internet banter. I just don't think all your worrying and complaining about it is worth it. You don't need to keep reminding us how disappointed you are. We are all well aware of the how a lot of multiplats have turned out. It shouldn't matter that much to you since you own both consoles. Most PS3 owners simply don't care anymore. It just gets tiresome hearing all the complaining about something that really is no big deal and only serves to fan the flames of fanboy wars. This isn't 2007 anymore and most games turn out equal. You say the PS3 version of Crysis is blurry, I say the 360 has screen tearing. They both have their faults so it all comes down to preference.

Thank you for resolving that civilly, but I just want to add something-

I've seen Crysis 2 on the PS3, 360 and high-end PC. I only noticed anything significant on the PC version but for the record, I'm not about to shell out what that person paid for his monster rig. The difference wasn't THAT gigantic.

As for the PS3 and 360 versions, people can say what they want. I saw very little difference, and especially none that hampered gameplay. I went all the way through Crysis 2 on the PS3 and never noticed an unstable frame rate. It remained entirely smooth throughout.

I'm not sorry I played it on the PS3 and I seriously doubt I would've gotten any more enjoyment out of it if I had played it on the 360. This isn't Bayonetta; that was a port problem that affected the gameplay, and it was a definite issue. Whether or not a brick in a building is a little sharper doesn't bother me. I'm playing a GAME. :)

inferior multiplats and short games spammed with dlc are 2 of my biggest gripes about this gen.

The differences in most multiplatform games on the 360 and PS3 is so so so so miniscule. They be slightly better on the 360 for one reason or another but its so hard to tell.

What everyone should be more concerned with is how the 360/PS3 version will look compared to the PC clips that EA keeps releasing.

If they manage to offload enough of the tasks to the SPUs, they should have no problem in achieving platform parity, as exclusive games have historically shown. However, multiplatform devs just don't seem capable of realising that, and so the PS3 version usually comes in with just a tad less detail than the 360 version. Doesn't worry me, it's usually not that noticeable when the games have been developed side-by-side, though ports are shocking. I hope Battlefield 3 offers a decent length campaign, because it's looking amazing, and that's the only way I'm picking it up day 1.

What some of these lazy-a$$ed developers should be doing, is truly learn the PS3's working architecture, inside & out.

Then by making their game for PS3 as the leading console & then porting it over to the Bot Box, it should the best of both worlds.

And everybody comes away happy.

And to top it off, he post office has giving me the run-around about my claim although I put an additional $500 insurance on it.
The repair shop emailed me last night, saying that they CAN replace my PS3's whole shell, but it's going to be another $75 to do it. I hope that won't change my serial # cause I want to keep the same numbers for some security reasons.

Anyway, the repair shop has put all of my PS3 repairs on hold till I get back to them about the added repairs.

I gotta say too, that i saw shots taken of each console side by side, even next to the PC. the difference is there, but its minimal... really. DICE imo has a much better chance of really creating a multiplat gem that everyone is gonna want day one.

I am sure it will look great on the PS3, but I am still resigned to get these types of games for the PC once I get my new machine up and running end of year. Its the only way while I wait for the PS4...

I can't think of a game where the ps3 version was superior to the xbox 360 version. Like in terms of graphical advantages and framerates, anti aliasing and screen tears always get in the ps3's way.

i totally agree with that. a lot of ps3 multiplats are at lower frame rates, lower resolutions, and struggle with anti aliasing issues. if people can not see that with their own eyes...well let's just say they probably never seen the 360 version in person and are in denial.

there are 2 multiplat games that i know of that came out better on the ps3. ff13, and castlevannia. it's sad but true. 99.99% of the time if you're playing a multiplat on the ps3 it is the weaker version.

So basically this will be another multiplat that doesn't take full advantage of the PS3's capabilities?

Ah what the hell, it still looks good. I just hope its not inferior to the 360 version is all.
