Portal 2 Likely Valve's Last "Isolated Single-Player" Game

Besides a great co-op feature, Portal 2 doesn't include a multiplayer option.

That makes it an odd duck by today's standards, regardless of the obvious excellence of Valve's puzzle-based masterpiece. Many are wondering what the developer's approach will be concerning possible new titles like Half-Life 2: Episode 3, and "Portal 2: The Final Hours" writer Geoff Keighley gives us a hint concerning the single-player focus. Thanks to a new blog update, we learn that Portal 2 will probably be Valve's last foray into an "isolated single-player experience." When asked to explain this, Keighley responded:

"Good eye! This is coming from Valve, although I don’t have a lot more to share other than what is in the story. I agree it’s a provocative statement, especially given the amazing single player storyline in Portal 2. Keep in mind Valve said 'probably,' so I get the feeling that this could change."

There are many ways to interpret the term "isolated single-player." Perhaps they're merely talking about adding competitive multiplayer for any new game they do, or - and this likely won't go over well with the fans - they're referring to the possibility of never creating another story or campaign that is only single-player in nature. What do you think their intentions are, and better yet, what do you think their intentions should be?

If the multiplayer aspect of any new game is worthwhile and not just a tacked on part just to draw in more players then I wouldn't think there would be an issue with it. When done right, multiplayer games can be loads of fun. However, I don't want to see any worlds I've grown fond of have MP added on just to do it.

Half Life is so story driven that it has to be single player only.

Yes, but Half-Life MP was very fun. I can see them skipping Ep3 and just coming out with a new Half-Life 3 that has MP. What kind of MP I have no idea. I would think since it's Valve that it would be something new, different and intelligent.

It really depends how long you take on each puzzle. If your a mastermind you can probably beat it within that 8-10 hour slot. But if your like me and have a hard time figuring out even the simplest things you can double that time frame lol

I'm pretty sure that would mean that they won't be doing any more games that are single player only. Meaning from now on everything they do will have multiplayer.

Not really a big deal because there are very few games that don't have multiplayer.

I hope you are right, Kraygen. But if that was the case, then why do they use Portal 2 as example? Since it also have network coop support and is not single player only?

Because they are talking about typical online multiplayer. In the gaming world when people talk multiplayer they aren't referring to co-op.

When devs announce multiplayer, no one automatically goes, "yes, co-op!"

Portal 2 was excellent. If Valve chose to they could continue considering how it ended. I hope they mean no single player ONLY games. I am not always in the mood for play with others. I am now playing the co-op campaign and it very entertaining. This game is worthy to pursue the Platinum trophy.

It seems like there are alot of CO-OP trophies...which always make it difficult to obtain trophies. Then there's the trophy where you have to finish the CO-OP and then play the CO-OP intro with someone that has never played!! That seems like it could be tough for some people...

What do you think??

I think the hardest co-op trophy is the one where you have to hug 3 different people on your friends list. I only know 2 people that have it.

Some of them are quite easy and amusing like throwing a portal under someone gesturing or taunting GLaDOS.

I'm not sure how Portal 2 is such an isolated single player adventure when we have a coop campaign that can be played online with PS3 or PC owners or with splitscreen. Not exactly the definition of isolated to me, unless they're talking about not being able to play coop with the main campaign.

thats never going to happen!
valve stopping storytelling is like blizzard stopping WOW, MMOs, and goes on to make stealth games!
valve are one of the very few developers who do stories flawlessly, so there never going to leave that behind!
adding MP will probably definitely happen, but there never going to leave the story behind!

i have no doubt that valve would have included some sort of multiplayer if they could have. but portal is a puzzle game, and would be very difficult to build a multiplayer around. it would be like tetris having a team deathmatch mode.
but, fortunately, portal 2 does not need multiplayer. it is a monnument by its self. the co-op is some of the most fun i've had on the ps3 in along time. if valve added maybe a DLC with additional puzzles, this game would be perfect. in my opinion, of course.
