Top 5 Games To Play With PSN Down

The PlayStation Network is still down, Sony can't yet provide any new update, and you're sick of reading all the articles and rumors online. You want to play.

Well, if you need any help, we're giving you the top 5 games to play when we don't have online access. Obviously, we're picking some of the best single-player experiences out there, so pay attention-

5. inFamous

It remains one of our favorite games of the generation, and let's not forget that the sequel arrives on June 7. This is a fantastic game to play when you're forced off the PSN; it's just endless fun, and playing the original (again or for the first time) will pump you up for inFamous 2. An endlessly entertaining blend of superhero powers and a sandbox/GTA structure, Sucker Punch's original title is just a blast and a half.

4. Alan Wake

Yes, Xbox Live is fine but maybe you don't play the 360 much, or maybe your friends spend all their time on the PSN. So it's time to take a break from anything multiplayer-related and if that's the case, why not sample one of the most fulfilling thrillers of the generation? Incredibly well-written, awfully creepy, and boasting excellent performances, this was sadly overlooked when it released last year. Thankfully, though, we hear a sequel is in the works and if that's true, you'll need to be familiar with the first story. It's very well done.

3. Most anything from BioWare

Just pick one. Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2; there has got to be something from these RPG masters you can enjoy. If you like a sci-fi setting, ME is for you; if you're more of an old-fashioned fantasy-type guy, go for Dragon Age. All of them offer sufficiently long campaigns and will undoubtedly see you through this no-PSN crisis. Plus, if you're new to RPGs, you might just discover a new-found love, and you'll cultivate it in the near future.

2. Portal 2

The campaign is plenty long enough and you'll continually test your problem-solving ability. Valve's ingeniously designed puzzler includes some of the best voice acting you've ever heard, unbelievable puzzle and level creation, and awesome balance and pacing. The critics are raving for a reason so if you need something new that will tide you over, Portal 2 is a no-brainer. Don't be intimidated; it's not that hard. It's just rewarding.

1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

As we look forward to Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception in November, we look back to what is widely considered to be the greatest game of the generation thus far. And unlike many other titles, its popularity was almost entirely due to its unparalleled single-player campaign. If you're looking for the definitive solo experience of the era, it's right here. So what if you've already played it? Play it again! You won't be sorry.

I'm about half way through the single player campaign. It is pretty fun, but you do see alot of the bugs that the reviewers were talking about (cutscenes and music that "skip" tend to stand out for me) but it is quite fun. Def not revolutionary but pretty solid so far. I want to be able to get online with my leveled up snipers though.

Merc - It's definitely lacking in the visuals, and there are a few minor bugs here and there.

It is much funner then any shooter out there currently due to the Weapon Mod system. It's a blast replaying the missions with different weapons.

The custom campaign is really good as well. My only complaint is the fact that there is only six maps, when there should have been 14 (the same number of single player levels).

No for real it's not a very good story and COD has away better story then socom 4 in my opinion. SO far I think Black Ops really did justice with the story mode it felt like a movie to me same with World at War. Now with Infinity Ward, their story is decent but it could have been a lot better. Best thing about the COD series story is it's easy to follow, which brings in the sense that it could be corny to some people. Socom I just didn't fell it had a good introduction and story. That's all I saying.

you can finish it in 5 hours, theres bugs galore, the graphics are dated, the gameplays as repetitive as hell, the AI is dumb as bat sh*t, its less of a tactical shooter more of a take cover and clear the area shooter, controls are really sluggish, why do i have to hold L2 then select a grenade before i can throw it? why cant it be like every other game and just assign a button to a grenade? surprisingly for a DTS game it sounds CRAP!
i could go on for days!
if anything the games lucky it got the scores it did, if it only had SP no MP, or if the MP was crap, id be surprised to see this hit a 6!
sooooooooooo disappointed!

shadow - Truth be told, I have yet to see a story in any shooter be something to talk about or another rinse and repeat.

"______" - What shooter isn't repetitive? Plus, since when is the cover and clear mechanic a bad thing? Gears of War is heralded for that very thing?

... And Dragon Age 2 has, surprisingly early to me at least, dropped in price now and is available for £17.99. And that *is* a bargain indeed.

I'd also like to expand that list to include Crysis2, the single player campaign is darn cool imo. At least if you like a sci-fi setting to your games.

crysis 2 is a great multiplat title. it starts slow but improves as you go plus it has a lengthy campign.

fallout3, and mass effect 2 are also great single player games.

one game that i think gets overlooked is CASTLEVANNIA LOS. i absolutely loved that game. it's a beautiful game with gorgeous expansive vistas. it also has a lot of depth and a lengthy campign. i loved the story and it has a kick ass ending with a cool twist. i actually regard it more highly than gow3.

i'm also a big metal gear solid fan so mgs4 has to get a mention as well.

Exactly, Excel. Most games of this genre is usually a string of cliff hangers in an almost hysterical tempo.
One of the main reasons I love Crysis 2 is that it has self confidence enough to let things stay low key for a while to give the story room to develop. it rewards patience. Let you get familiar with the game and mechanics.

At first I didn't pay much attention to the story at all. Then at a certain point I started going "hmmm... Now what's this?" and now I am at a level where I really pay attention to the cut scenes. Masterly done.

Castlevania LoS is a fantastic game. Completely loved it and bought the Reverie as well. Looking forward to Resurrection. I want to plat it but will wait until later on this year to go through it again. Totally underrated game!
Finishing up Portal 2 and will be hitting Mortal Kombat next.

i just got through the game on supersoldier, anyone can get that with a maxed out super suit. most levels i just walked passed everyone and carried a HMG, LMG, and a sniper rifle or a microwave gun just in case i run into aliens, humans were easy. online is pretty fun too, just gotta get past the fact that everyone is using cloaking online. once you know how to move around and how to use your armor/stealth, its a great multiplayer game.

I've been playing Mortal Kombat non stop just to get better..

I'm actually playing the Killzone 3 campaign since i was always on the multiplayer part of it and neva had the chance to finish the campaign... I also just finished the GOW Collection, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, And Tekken 6... I almost forgot how fast i go through games since i'm always playing online... But it feels good to catch up on the games i haven't played

Also, at least for those with PS Plus, now is not the best time to play games with locked saves...which eliminates DA: O as well (why, Bioware, why?).

I just wish Heavy Rain would let me finish it. I get to the last scene and it crashes every time.

Comrads, can anyone help me out with this issue? It all started on Friday.

The game freezes on the Press Start screen on WWE All Stars and Mortal Kombat Ladder Mode. Had to turn off the console by its back switch. Now I only get a slow moving lava lamp look alike wave from the XMB boot up screen. Nothing is happening so I decide to do a reset. Now my system turns on with no picture and my HDD light is fully light and can't do anything. Does anyone know what does this mean?

I'd reset the video settings and see if that at least gets you some picture. You do that by keeping the power button pressed until the second beep from the PS3...

If that doesn't get you some picture then I'd call Sony. They'll probably have you enter safe mode and clear some files..

That sounds a lot like HDD corruption. Trye looking up the steps for running the recovery menu to fix the corruption. The PS3 has a chkdsk like utility that allows it to fix file system corruption (not disc surface corruption though). That may help. Also try disconnecting your PS3's network cable or disabling the wireless connection (if you're wireless), that may help with starting some games that perform certain online checks at start-up.

I've been spending the last 2 weeks on FFXIII.

I finally got the platinum last night, and it was probably the most satisfaction I've gotten out of obtaining a platinum yet.

Hopefully going to start Portal 2 SP tonight or tomorrow. But I'll have to wait to co-op with my brother on PC till next week I suppose.

Ha, yup. I'll see how I feel once I am done with the game. Right now I'm just farming as much Incentive and Credit Chips as I can. I still haven't moved on from those hallways in the airship you save Vanille and Sazh in. I suspect when I finally move on I'll have enough CP to max out my characters every time it allows me to upgrade them further. I have almost 100,000 CP collected for each character. Just kinda sucks I can do anything with it. I don't like the limits it places on you. In all other Final Fantasy games I would be a God by now for how much grinding I have been doing. For example, in Final Fantasy VIII, I would be close to level 50 before I even left Balamb Garden for the first time.

Haha, well, I don't mean to discourage you, but 100,000 cp is a drop in the bucket to what you will need. As you advance in the crysterium, each move will cost you 30,000, 60,000, and even 120,000 cp points. So the 100,000 you have now doesn't get you far. Get to chapter 11, do your missions, and get that growth egg!

best place i found to farm is that with a giant turtle with a bunch of soldiers around it in some city, i dont care what its called now. anyway, its the place where that giant turtle falls through the glass. just summon to knock the turtle down, spam death with vanille, then beat the soldiers to build up tech points or whatever you need to summon. I dont feel like going back to platinum it. mission requirements and enemies for the stones are retarded.

John, using summons is the brutal way to go, cuz as you say, you then have to build up your TP after each battle. You just have to learn how to beat them without. I was beating them in 1:50 without summons and no buffs. And the area you were talking about is Eden. I don't blame you for not wanting to go back for the Platinum trophy. It is a grind fest to be sure.

Yeah - I definitely think that step 1 is getting the growth egg from spamming death on Neochu. Step 2 is farming CP from the Northern Highplain with the Behemoth King and Megistotherian fighting each other (with the growth egg, a nice party and a few upgrades to weapons you can get almost 800,000 CP an hour here). Then step 3 is platinum ingot farming in Eden with the save station (no Summons - just use fang and Highwind, and get some Earth Resistance). Step 4 - Annihilate the game...

It's worth it as long as you have about 20-30 hours or so to kill ;)

I'm away from my PS3 anyway, But I tell you what the PSP has been used this last 2 weeks more in more than a year. With the release of The 3rd Birthday, I played through Parasite Eve I and II before.

I'm now waiting for Final Fantasy IV, to arrive in the post, in the meantime I have been playing the Final Fantasy I remake and I love it. If FFIV gets this qaulity of treatment It will be fantastic.

Once I get my PS3 back I intend to play through MGS3 before I stat Peace Walker, So my PSP has actually turned out to be a fantastic investment, The PSN being down does not affect me what so ever.

It's well worth it. You'll spend at least 20+ hours completeting the new story mode with all the new characters then the original game unlocks with new perks. I'm almost done with the original game and have clocked about 45 hours into it. Good thing to is you get to carry over your Prologue and Dissidia 1 save data. All your items and leveled up characters will carry over into Duodecim. I will probably end up logging over 100 hours into Duodecim like I Dissidia.

I have 10 games with me I have yet to beat in particular order.
1.) Killzone 3. I beat the cooperative mode with my brother but not the single player.
2.) Yakuza 3
3.) Fallout New Vegas
4.) Castlevania
5.) EA MMA
6.) Prototype
7.) Dragon Age 2
8.) White Knight Chronicles
9.) Mini Ninjas
10.) Assassins Creed Brotherhood.

I've started all of them except brotherhood. It hasn't touched my ps3 once.

Get on LBP2 and design a game! I'm still hacking away at the ultimate LBP2 RPG....just you wait.

U2. Tech wise unbelievable, but i never full enjoyed the game. Very cheesy run, cover, stick-to-the-script shooter with the occasional stick-to-the-script platforming. And before you all cry, i admire it for what it is and totally understand your reasons for enthusiasm, but understand my opposition too.

I was also trying to get into Home when the lockdown occurred. I've been working my way through Sodium 1 / Salt Shooter and am bummed that I can't finish it.

I also want to see the changes that come with 1.5. Installed, but not successfully launched.

In the meantime, I've been playing Prince Of Persia. I think Folklore is next.

Also, my weekend was eaten by a Doctor Who series 6 (?) marathon, leading up to the debut of the new episode.

add gow3, dead space 2, fallout nv or fallout 3, kz3, read dead redemption, ac 1,2, and brotherhood, and moh. there's plenty of games to play while psn is down. im just replaying some of those games i said cause i still need trophies on some of them and need to beat especially dead space 2 which is a pain in the arse to beat on zealot especially when im on my first play-through still.

It's ironic that 3D Dot is a throwback to old RPGs, and yet defeats most new RPGs.

One of the best i played this gen, despite it throwing back to Zelda a bit too much.

I'd say Vanquish is a good game to play for the SP. Such a kick ass, balls to the wall game. LOL. I agree with Portal 2 and even Crysis 2. I'd actually love to play Red Dead again. That game has a special place in my heart. LOl. I, myself, have been playing a little bit of everything. Fifa, Fight Night: Champion "Be a Legend", Crysis 2, and Portal 2.
I have to be honest, I holding back on Portal 2. I only play a puzzle or two then i'm done. I hate because i want to play it longer. I just enjoy it so much, i don't want it to end! LOL.

Vanquish is something all adrenaline junkies should give a chance, they should love it. Very intense, plays well, looks good and is cleverly made.
It was too intense for me, I initially loved it but it quickly became simply "too much". However, if you can stand the heat then Vanquish deserves your attention. Also, there are really good deals on that game out there now.

Vanquish RULED! It was a very solid but short shooter. It was short because it was so good I didn't want it to end. I am going to have to go through it again. Fast non-stop adrenaline rocket slide love! The bosses were epic!

I personally think that Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, God of War III or any of the Collection titles should've made this list rather than a spot going to a game that doesn't even appear on the PlayStation. I know Alan Wake is a good game. I've played it at my buddy's place. The thing is, though, not everyone who owns a PS3 also owns a 360 and with this being a PlayStation Web site, it's rather strange to see a Xbox exclusive title on this list rather than one of the numerous amazing PS3 exclusive titles that are out there.

I traded in some PS3 games and got a 360 with Alan Wake and Splinter Cell. Not going to pay for XBL anytime soon, but have been very busy with those games. Alan Wake is a darn good game and the reason I got a 360...again.

Games are starting to bore me now. I cant seem to insert a disk into my Ps3 and play it and enjoy it like I used to. Anyway, i did however managed to get all trophies for Socom 4, exept two. Play all multiplayer modes and play all 6 coop maps ( i can do all 6 maps solo but i prefer to play it with fwiends). Two trophies to platinum, just need PSN.

Been replaying U2 and it's kept me captivated even though I know what's going to happen. I played for a solid 5 or 6 hours and my friends just watched me because of how cinematic it felt.

Alan Wake was a pretty good game. The atmosphere was awesome. Portal 2 is one of the most entertaining games I've played. Already on my second play through. Can't wait to try out the co-op.

I've been playing Fifa10. I don't know why I do...whenever I play it I just want to rip my hair out. BUT I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT!! (0_O).

Yeah, I've completed Uncharted 26 times and counting, so I mean it when I say I'm ND's #1 fan, lol. Luckily, in Britain we have had really good weather so I've mostly being enjoying it, so PSN being down only troubles me in thinking about the long term effects of it being down (E.G the servers taking a long time to get back to full speed, because it will have, oh I don't know, 40 million people logging on at once?).

Oh and I've just being surfing the net about Uncharted 3 info. Is anyone else ridiculously excited for it now? Almost as much as UC2 beta..CAN'T WAIT NOW!! I've actually lost my intrest in the Infamous 2 beta because of UC3 now lol. Oh yeah, case no-one knew it will be on the PS store on July 5th.

Borderlands is *so* much more fun with a friend! I just have to say this, if you got a buddy with ps3, save it for coop - Borderlands is also dirt cheap nowadays, you can buy the game for the buddy to play with :)

One step ahead of you, Ben.

Since PSN's been down, Uncharted 2 is the only thing I've played. I lost all my save data when I lost my 60GB beauty, so since I hadn't platinumed it, I'm basically starting from scratch.

So far, I've beaten it on hard, collected 83 treasures, got most of the weapon trophies, and am on Chapter 22 on Crushing. With the exception of the two online trophies necessary for platinum, I should have it completed within the next day or two.

I beat him on crushing last night. I fluked into finding a really cheap way of killing him. I almost died and kept clinging to a pillar and just keeping him on the opposite side. He never left the pillar and couldn't hit me... and blue resin kept popping up next to him over time. lol. HAXORS WIN! lol... was satisfying though... I beat him on Hard legitimately. Got lucky on Crushing. lol

Hopping around like a bunny in a circle around the map helped me, if I could hear his breath I didn't dare look back. I'm less than 10 treasures away from platinum right now, though I can't ever seem to load Chapter 23 again to get the last few (forever spinning needle). Frustrating to be this close :(.

OFF TOPIC. It seems the reason PSN is down it's because there is a custom firmware that lets you log in to PSN and download games for free, basicaly SONY was losing sales.
I wonder how SONY feels about online distribution now.

My top five while PSN down

1.NBA 2K11: The association mode
2.Mafia II: Trying to finish it before the two week time window of May 17th
3.NHL 11: Be the GM mode
4.InFamous: trying to collect all the dead drops and blast shards
5.Uncharted: treasure collection and higher difficultly trophies.

I've actually been playing Uncharted 2 through again, trying to get some more Trophies. It's a shame that PSN is down, but perhaps we will see a much stronger system/firmware come out of this. One feature I would like Sony to implement is the ability to delete Trophy information from your list, as there are some titles I've sold, and won't ever play again, and it would be nice to remove them. Apart from that I've got Heavy Rain and InFamous, OOH and NBA 2K11 to play through. :)

GT5 should be number 1, no matter how many hours you put into it you will never be finished!
2 should be alpha protocol, takes forever to finish, and once you do you can play through again to get different endings.
3 heavy rain for the same reasons as 2, and because theres so little like it!
4 just cause 2, because who does not want to strap a jeep to a fighter jet and use said jeep as a wrecking ball?
5 saints row 2, simply because theres no bigger laugh out there!
i would put portal 2, but its too repetitive, and allot of the puzzles its so hard to see where the exit is it can make you see red!
doing what you need to do is easy, finding out what you need to do is the hard part.

Yah, well, he insulted me and called me some pretty nasty names a while back that got him a warning. He accused me of not doing my research and contradicting myself like a 4th grader. He was way off mark, and no one agreed with him, but still... hell hath no fury like an Underdog scorned!

I promised him I would track his contradictions and come after him every chance I got. Unfortunately, most people do it before me since he does it so often, but still. I don't forget. lol

Man I played Fatal Frame 3 last night and because we live in the country now it's so much scarier than when we lived in town. I almost died at a few places scared the crap out of myself.
