PSN Outage Q&A #2, Sony Hints At "Goodwill Gesture"

For all of you keeping a close eye on any official updates from Sony, it's time for Q&A #2 at the PlayStation Blog.

First off, they confirm your download history and Friends list won't be affected by the downtime and secondly, for all of you who have played more single-player lately, your Trophies "are intact." As soon as things come back online, they'll be re-synched. Furthermore, any data on the cloud for PlayStation Plus members will also be restored, and to repeat Sony Online Entertainment's comments earlier in the week, they issue the following clarification from SOE concerning MMOs like DC Universe Online:

"We apologize for any inconvenience players may have experienced as a result of the recent service interruption. As a global leader in online gaming, SOE is committed to delivering stable and entertaining games for players of all ages. To thank players for their patience, we will be hosting special events across our game portfolio. We are also working on a “make good” plan for players of the PS3 versions of DC Universe Online and Free Realms. Details will be available soon on the individual game websites and forums."

Lastly, as far as a "goodwill gesture" for this whole mess, the answer is vague, but Sony says they're "currently evaluating ways to show appreciation" for our patience. No idea what that might be just yet, but we're sure users have a few ideas.

They could make cloud based saves a standard, free, PSN feature....that would be a very nice gesture to all, though Plus subscribers might want something else since they already have that...

Cloud based saves should be for all so long as they allow jerkoff devs to lock saves. I mean what's the point? It's not like you can use another person's save to get trophies anyway.

They really are doing the right thing here, releasing all these Q and A's! I felt theyve done a good job anyways, but these recent updates of communication really helps! I also think it's great Sony would even think about some sort of compensation, even though they really don't need to. We shouldnt be holding out our hands fr something we dont even pay for. None the less it just shows Sony doesn't want to be in this situation and they will do what's necessary for their consumers.

Anyways it really seems the storm is blowing over. Yesterday I didn't see many headlines on this subject of the PSN outage and this morning I havnt seen any. This is the only thing closely related as anything else Sony has said on the matter! Seems to me people just wanted to get a jump on bashing Sony, anything they can use to dismiss their existence. But again I just wanna see this all dissapear!

It's been a hot topic and I'm glad Ben and PSX have kept us updated even though I've seen a few comments get a lil rowdy! ;) so thanks for keeping us informed through all this as well!

sony just told me within a week. they said it's definitely not coming up on this weekend. they told me 2-7 days when i phoned them last saturday so i don't even think they know.

Well, remember they are issuing a new firmware update, everything has to be fully restored, rebuilt and tested. The Forensic teams have to be 'done' with the systems, and the new SDKs will have to be distributed to developers. Lots to do in very little time.

And what Highlander stated as well, so I believe May 3rd won't be a concrete date what the person told me. What the person told me is probably false.

Since Sony has concentrated on having great single player games to go along with popular multiplayer games, unlike some consoles that concentrate faaar too much on multiplayer (*cough* Xbox *cough*), I am totally fine with Sony taking their time to get all the kinks ironed out.

I would much rather they get it right and get the PSN so secure that hackers would take days to even just get a name. With MGS4, Infamous, Uncharted 2, Dead Space 2, Killzone 3, Heavy Rain with Move, Modnation racers story mode, LBP 2 story mode, Final fantasy XIII, Red Dead Redemption, Gran Turismo 5 and Assassin's Creed 2 to keep me company (along with many great Wii titles I'm yet to finish), I think I'll be fine for whatever length of time PSN is down for.

I also have a 360, and am currently having a few go's of Gears 3 beta. Fun, but the shotgun is WAAAY too overpowered. Also getting into Fable 2, big time! Love that game. Just ignore everything that prat Peter Molyneux boasted about and you'll find it's a good game.

I like that they thank their customers for their "extraordinary patience". Sony is very correctly recognizing the patience being shown. I hope that their customers continue to be patient because at this point, the biggest victim of the attack is Sony.

LOL! Well, if you analyze corporate statements and the language used, I've never seen a company use that phrase before. I've seen plenty of "thank you for your patience" statements before that were simply off the cuff, throw away statements meant for nothing but PR.I just think it's an interesting turn of phrase because it does indicate that whoever is behind the communication has made some attempt to recognize the frustration of the customer. I know you'll say I'm looking too deeply into it, but when you've seen as many corporate thank you's as I have, you get used to the form letter phrasing. At very least Sony isn't doing that.

I learned a very important life lesson working for the UK's Civil Service a long time ago. When things go wrong - and they will - running around like a headless chicken and trying to 'do' something about that which you have no control is pointless. Every time there was a crisis of any kind, the most productive course of action - for those not directly involved - was to be patient and adopt a wait and see position. The simple truth is that what will happen, will happen, and generally speaking things do work out in the end. The trick is being patient and catching the crest of the wave at the end of the event so you don't miss the end-game...

I don't think they need to compensate us either, but it's mo def a nice gesture. The issue now is it's generally not good to bring something like that up and then not follow through with it. They were better off not mentioning it at all until they just did it. Now with all the discussion about it, there will undoubtedly be people pissed at the compensation.

I think a good thing would be to sell psn money for half off. For example, we could buy $10 for our 'wallet's' and Sony could give us $10 for a total of $20. That way, we get free $$ and they get us to spend more money. It looks good to people because they are giving money for 50% off. (And based on their margin, they'd recoup some of their gifted $10 by having us spend $10 so it's not as bad for Sony). Plus, it looks great to the outsiders. And certainly not all 77 million accounts will take advantage of that.

Or they could just put everything at 1/2 off in the psn store.

I am sort of getting annoyed as I was excited to play Socom with some old Socom friends. "I'm in a glass case of emotion!"

Chill, dude. We are not punished. We are getting a safer, better psn. That's what we want.
I reckon the potential danger is over, all looks to be good, now give them time to make a good, stable update that make our psn safer than ever and no rushed patchwork.
I've not been an unconditional defender of Sony in this case, but if there's one thing I will defend it will be their right to "publish when it's done" - it's the only way in this case.

We do not want a repetition of this, can it be avoided.

free game from the psn store only think i can really think of, not some high price game but like a game under $7dollars a game that no really plays much. other than that nothing i would really want, plus members don't need anything, except maybe expand the cloud memory bigger, only got 30mb left now.

on the sony website on the blog section sony states that SOME of the features on PSN will be back online by may 3rd, a week from yesterday but im hoping for a miracle and that it comes back online by tomorrow or sunday, i need to get my GTA fix in lol =:^P

BUt for real 2 weeks is quite the time the estimaeted tiem back on is tuesday and 13 days is pretty close to 2 weeks.

Some people around my area have sold their ps3 and gotten xbox 360. Stupid fools.

For a big company this would redeem all the fault and down time people expreienced.

Why would I get thumbs down maybe for cap locks?

ANd people who have clamied without psn their ps3 is useless, it's not without online.

Here's an idea: cloud saves that aren't cripplingly small.

Seriously, give all members something like 60 gigs... storage is cheap (I mean like less than a quarter (yes, $.25) for a GB on Amazon). That's less than $15/person.

OK folks. Let me give you an example of the kind of lengths some 'journalists' are going to in order to target Sony - still.

The link below is to an extremely speculative piece based on paranoia, some tweets and a few comments from GeoHot. Excellent sources of information if I must say so myself. No, but seriously, this kind of unfounded speculation and fear mongering is utterly reprehensible, and to my mind at least is motivated out of a hatred For Sony and a desire to do the company harm.

No offense to any 'journalist' like the author of this piece, but there are 1000's of people who's livelihoods and families depend on their income from working for Sony. What does furthering the agenda of a bunch of anarchic hackers or Sony's competitors have to do with responsible journalism?

I really really don't want to see them set a precedent that bad behavior from some third party, will get people free stuff. To foks who're paying for subscriptions and truly lost uot monetarily, yes, I feel something should be afford to them. But, other than that...I don't need anything.

If I am compensated then Thank You Sony but what I really want is all this to end and a more secure experience. As secure as possible that is.

I am curious. The security that did exist for the personal information. Was it insured? If it was implemented by Sony then probably not. But if they had an outside vendor that assisted with it I would think there should have been some type of insurance for it. Not sure how it was done but I would like to know.

Somehow, I just dont think most of the people out there won't be happy with whatever this gesture is.

I just heard on TV that the group responsible for this Is bragging about having 2.2 mil credit card numbers. But they didn't say who it was. Personally I cand of find that hard to believe after hearing what Sony and the credit card companies are saying.

The same claim supposedly involves the credit card verification number off the back of your card too. Sadly - for the claims - Sony never asked for, or stored that piece of information. So whatever these people are claiming to have, I find it really difficult to believe that it came from Sony.

I've read a few articles this morning that in some underground forums there is talk about CC numbers and apparently they are wanting to sell them for $100,000. I Guess my whole thing is, regardless if it's underground or not. Why would anyone able to Hack the PSN then advertise it publically by telling people what they wish to do with the information.

But on the flip side to that if this is an act by someone else making these claims that wasn't involved or doesnt actually have this info, why would they be dumb enough to involve themselves in this mess? It's just outta control.

Hopefully your right highlander that these people are claiming they have the 3 digit security code also. That just solidifies they are not factual claims since Sony did not store that information!

Maybe I'm being too kind but I don't really need a "goodwill gesture" from Sony, even if I am a Plus subscriber. Sure, it will be appreciated and most other users would be happy that Sony is at least considering one. I guess what really matters to me is that Sony take their time in beefing up the security of PSN before bringing it back up.

I don't know why people disliked my comment up above maybe it's all caplocks, but really it would be nice to have all of those things up there. 2 weeks is quite the time, for people and lot's are complaining. I got my single player games to play, but what sony should worry about is beefing up security and the people that are pissed off. There has to be a sense of good customer service and valuing customers that's why my list up there should come into effect as soon as psn comes back. Maybe not the cross voice chat, cross video chat, custom soundtracks, they are nice features and why wouldn't you want them????

disliking it is almost like pre-ordering a game but not taking the bonus special pre-order code.

Obviously better security is a must, but as a goodwill sony has said to be done, that wouldn't be bad. A guy can dream can't he?

i think a months free PSN+ subscription is more then fair!
plus it could turn from a loss to a profit, it could convince allot of people to finally jump in.

Noone needs this "get well soon" sympathy love letter garbage, people just want the PSN fixed. Get that done as quickly as possible with more stable security & that will be the best gift you could give your consumers.

Cute thought though.

everybody look on the new blog bost like fane1024 has said to get the update on what went down at the sony conference. reading peoples comments after the conference still on other sites, people still upset and not please what sony has said. they still think sony doesn't care about the consumer. really sony is giving non ps+ members a free month trial and current ps+ members a extra free month and giving all of us free content which of course means a game, so what more could sony give us. also them saying, psn will be up and we be able to play online again next week, should shut up most of us complaining that we cant plan online. imo sony did a great job at describing in better detail on what went wrong, even showing how the hacker hack their network and last they actually bowed and apologize which to me is all i ask for was apology nothing more really.
