Some services are restored this week like listed in the article. However normal PSN will resume soon after. I'm sure it won't take them a month to get PS3 store back up so you will be able to take full advantage of PS Plus.

I'm pleased about the news though although I will be back in my university home, so PS3 stays in my family home... I guess I will have to state clear orders to them to download every single freebie for me :D

This is good news, be glad to be able to chat with friends again and getting a free month of ps+ is nice.

Personally I don't think Sony owed us anything, but I'm not surprised. That's just how they are and that's great because it's great customer service.

Is it just me or is Sony really not out anything by giving everyone a free month of PS+.

Think about it. The people that get a free month, get some free games and avatars or themes, then when the month is up, all the games, avatars and themes go away.

I guess it is a way for Sony to show people what they have been missing by not buying the PS+ but I don't think it is any kind of goodwill gift either. That's just me.

Yay! I suppose this means that the headlines will no longer be dominated by doom and gloom about the PSN and we can resume normal services. Sure, it won't really be back to normal until all services are functional, but it's a step.

I think this is overly generous of Sony giving away free content. I was a returning customer anyway and I hope Sony realizes that not everyone was crying for free stuff. I wish Sony the best with their network and I'm looking forward to having regular service restored.

Or this week meaning anywhere from mon - sun?

Does Sony mean by tuesday or by sunday?

Kaz said the initial (limited) version would be rolled out to the various regions and that the roll out would begin "shortly". Given that he said so around 24 hours ago, I would bet the first region (likely Japan) might go live any time now, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's Tuesday (or even later) before it's live everywhere.

Remember, the average month of PS Plus means at least 4 free games...and it's likely to be above-average, given that items originally set for release during the down time will be pushed forward.

The ones already scheduled for the next month or so include Crash Commando, Alien Zombie Death, Streets Of Rage 2, and Golden Axe 2, plus at least 1 PSOne classic.

I would bet Sony sweetens the pot a little, as well.

However, I wouldn't expect a full $60 (third-party!) game like ME2. :P

I just realized something... If we're all getting PS+ when this comes back, doesn't that mean we need the PSstore in order to get those extra features?? Unless Sony means they'll start the 30 day thing after PSstore is back up. Otherwise that seems like kind of a waste... I'm excited to be able to have PS+ for a month, but won't the PSstore being down cut into that time? Just a thought...

Im pretty sure it's after the Ps store is up, you have to activate + anyway so...

My theory with this is Sony is trying to get people to purchase Ps+ that normally wouldn't have in the 1st place. People will see that the service is worth it.

More people buy + = Money for Sony, people without + get free content.
It's a win - win.

maybe thats why sony is giving out free month of psn plus. they're making it up to plus subscribers and figured to extend it to everyone since they're thinking that the store will be done for about a month. its a good move too, they let people have a taste of what plus has to offer and lets them choose whether they want to keep it going for all the things we get.

give it up on the cross game chat already, no offense. we really dont need that feature in my opinion. would you rather have someone talking into you ear about a game while playing a different game? when i play, i want to immerse myself in the world. if its a really good game, i ignore everything. messages, chat invites, and game invites gets ignored. there are already chat features on the ps3 by the way. you can even do a video chat.

It means that for a start they fully patched the Apache servers used to host PSN...known vulnerability!? Despite everything I've written about the security and encryption and hashing of data on PSN, the flaw in the armor turns out to be a patchable flaw? *sigh* I know that most organizations have many servers that are not fully patched, it's almost inevitable on a large network. On the other hand, if you know you are a target, you take precautions - like patching servers. Of course they were more than likely doing a global upgrade to patch the servers as part of the data center move. Which might explain the timing of the attack since the data center move was approaching fast. The attackers were clearly aware of the vulnerability, so they may have decided to attack while they felt the servers would remain vulnerable.

Let that be a lesson to all security professionals, patch all known vulnerabilities as soon as you know they are there and there is a patch available. If there is no patch do what you can to mitigate the vulnerability and remain vigilant.

Oh I can't help myself, gather your downthumbs, folks. Here goes: They were damn lucky if this was done by some hackers (Anonymous?) that just wanted to spank them. If this was done by (typically) russian industry hackers aiming for their customer database they would quite possibly have been above their heads in uglyness now. And that's probably why Homeland Security is on this case.
Keywords: Sloppy & unfocused.

However, creds en masse for the quality of their information flow from Sony lately. I think this is the work of the external consultants too, lets hope Sony have learnt from this - I think they must have.

But they did say 'chat' so there might be an upgrade/improvement coming by. If you don't want it, then don't use it. You don't have to join every invite and you can make your party invite only. Not a lot of features in general are 'needed', but don't you think it's cool to take to your friends no matter what game they're playing?

The poor excuse of a chat that is there today disables the possibility to play *any* game. They could just as well remove it. I'd love a cross game chat, cause I got a lot of friends on my list, and I do not only play complex games that require me to focus on the game. Plus we could share experiences while playing the same single player game. Or whatever. I would love it, so would The Doom, so *we* really would enjoy such a feature. So just stfu, no offense.

World you don't have Ps+?
Anything you get from PS+ you will keep forever... weather it's a free game or a discounted game... If the Kz3 map pack is still in the store, hurry and grab it cuz' its free with Ps+. Even avatars you get, anything you get you keep. Cloud storage goes away when your PS+ expires. If i were you I wouldn't use it because if you do you will want it forever unless you plan on buying Ps+. Cloud storage is hard to resist.

To my understanding, games you BUY at a discount, you keep (ie any of the 50% off for plus members deals). Games that are labeled FREE that you download, you lose after your subscription expires. Hence why I don't think it's entirely worth it.

Anything that is 100% free is only playable while you are a subscriber. Anything you pay for, you keep. So, PS+ get a lot of really huge discounts on things from DLC to games (mini's, PSP, PS3, and more). The free month may be beneficial to you if you find any discounts you want to invest in.

I find the discounted games are often the best. Remember those DLC awards from a month or two ago? Those games are all discounted. Plus, you might get to try a BETA or some demo's only available to plus.

Might be a good month for free!

Everything you get from PSN as a Plus member you keep. Now once your Plus subscription expires that content will be unusable until you resubscribe to PS Plus. Also, you have to remember to cancel your subscription because it does have automatic renewal.

PS Plus looks like a great service, I'm just really concerned that people will kick up a stink when they buy free or discounted items and won't be able to use it when the free 30 days are up.

It's a great way to hook people onto PS Plus, but for people without credit cards or the funds to keep their Plus subscription, I can foresee a lot of problems with people getting peeved that they can't access their discounted or FREE items.

I just hope the Xbots don't get all over this. IGN and Kotaku have been having a sensationalist journalism field day with all this PSN stuff going on. I'm sorry, but while Live is a good service and all, PSN has the better content. Also, Sony can match Live's service anytime they are ready, they just prefer to give gamers what they want for free. (cross game chat excepted - I know, I know, many of you here don't care, but amongst my circle of friends, that 1 feature is such a big deal breaker between 360 and PS3 that they ignore other great PSN features and focus on the 1 important thing missing, claiming it is the reason PS3 is still far from dominating)

There are alot of other things that Live does that PSN doesn't, from a universal party system to VOICE messages to being able to watch The Seven Year Itch on Netflix with your wife who's visiting your son 300 miles away. And cross game chat is mighty handy when you don't want to pause your game every five minutes to type a text response. Both services allow you to play games, but there the similiarity between the two ends.

No, you don't. Most of the free content is unusable if your subscription lapses. The stuff that remains usable is pretty much fluff (e.g., themes you'd never buy).

...which is why Sony added a free gift not tied to PS Plus to the package.

I think it's genius: give people a reason to pony-up for a subscription.

About this xgame chat - I can't chat at all while gaming. If someone walks in and says Hello, they'll have to wait 2 to 5 mins before they get a Hello back. It's just xbots grasping at straws. I'll keep the awesome games and those guys can keep chatting to their friends while waiting for kinectimal adventures 2.

But then again, they have NO reason to complain if they actual bother to read. The PSN reminds you that most items you obtain for free by being a Plus subscriber would be deemed unusable if you end your subscription. The PSN always informs you about this before allowing you to download.

It is NOT true that you permanently keep the 100% free ones. You only get to play them while you are a PS+ subscriber. Yes, you techinically keep them forever, but you CANNOT play the 100% free titles once you cancel your subscription.

Was waiting for the updates on this site. Finally some positive information regarding Sony. Most everyone has Negative spins on everything Sony has done so far. It's like jeez guys like no other Company in the history of man has ever been hacked into or far worse. I'm just glad to hear it'll be up this week so I can get some serious gaming done. I still want to play with my Steam buddies with Portal 2 online. Game is ultra fun.

Because Sony LOVES throwing that inflated number around to make it seem like there are that many users to the layperson. Hey, 77 million people can't be wrong, right? And it came back to bite them hard when the crap hit the fan. I figure a conservative estimate of about 40 million actual users connected to PSN. Factor in the people that made fake accounts just to get an LBP trophy, it's a little less than that.

Agreed, Porkchop. I mentioned that in an earlier post. Sony as recently as a month ago started sprouting out that there are "77 million unique PSN users". Well thats the number that the general media- including non-videogame sites- latched onto when they reported user info being compromised. Makes it sound alot worse than it is.

Oh ok... so because Sony was wrong, we can be wrong when it benefits us also. I had the same criticism before with Microsoft fudging sales with shipped and also with Sony when they bragged about all those accounts, also. I continue to have that criticism. Why can't people say "78 million accounts compromised" instead of saying 78 million people got screwed?

There will be free "content" besides the PS Plus stuff, which will likely be a game (rather than, say, add-on DLC) so that everyone can use it, but it looks like it will differ by region.

It may even be distributed via voucher code; a lot of the free stuff is.

I would like to point out that I'm pretty sure Sony is intelligent enough to wait until the store is up to hand out the free ps+.

Seems to be a lot of people questioning the free month and the store not coming back up. I highly doubt they started our free month of plus today only to put the store up in 3 weeks.

What sort of life would have led a person to get the point where he did all the terrible things he did?

I find the whole thing tragic. With all his abilities and charisma, he could have been so much more. Yet, for whatever reason, he revelled in committing atrocities that led to people celebrating his death.

I find the whole story tragic. When you think of it that way, it is a little sad. It's not like he was a murderer from birth. Something happened. I don't know what. But something. And the long story that led him to having his death celebrated is likely a sad and tragic one that, I for one, wish had been different for so many people's sakes.

The saddest part of all is that he likely never realized how wrong he was. He likely never had the chance to understand how wrong and evil he had behaved.

That is why I weap. It suggests that not everyone can be redeemed... That there is a point of no return. And that is depressing.

So we get a free month of playstation plus, but we presumably don't get access to the store to use it for the next 3 weeks or so? I don't care, I'm still pissed off. It is too high. lol. When you consider it.. put it this way...

78 million PSN accoutns.
50 million PS3's sold worldwide.
approx. 80% of PS3's connected to the internet

Which means... that's about 38 (80% of 50 = 40 + 28 multiple accounts over the 50 actual ps3's = 38) million additional accounts held by people at LEAST. (I know there are 5 on my PS3).

38 million wasted accounts x $30 per wasted account = $1.14 billion to no one... Plus another couple billion to real people.

Yeah... was never gonna happen. Little return for huge investment.

out of all the times PSN could of gone down it had to be when the infamous 2 beta my most anticipated game of the year was out!
now were going to miss out on that, the red faction Armageddon demo which is out this wednesday, and the DNF demo is apparently suppose to be out this week too!
looks like its time to sell the downstairs ps3, and get that 360 ive been waiting for.
no freaking way am i waiting till the end of the month to get store access back!

Just a curiousity, on PS+ after the 30 days, does the stuff we download become locked when the trail is over?

IIRC all of the games that I've gotten for free but two (Stacking and Flying Hamster) show an expiry date (in the "Triangle" menu on the XMB) which is the end date of my subscription. When I added more months, the date changed.

I think none of the other free stuff (e.g., the KZ3 maps) has that expiry date attached but the file format may just not be able to display it.

For each item that will expire, a screen pops up before you agree to "purchase" it telling you it will expire.

Anything that costs you money (and a lot of other lesser free stuff) is yours permanently.

p.s. Come to think of it, I think Sam & Max 1-5 also have no expiry date.

Bloody hell, SHUT UP! It's been a day since they announced that PSN would be restored within the week. That leaves a whole six days, and Sony only knows how much longer the Store will take to go live again. We get it, okay, you miss being able to play online, but there are a ton of offline games out there. Enjoy them in your time off from Black Ops, or whatever the hell your MP poison is. And you'll get your free Plus whenever it does come back, so stop whingeing. No wonder they call the youth of today the generation of entitlement (Implying of course that you are <16, and if not, you're certainly acting that way).

Sony should give all the dead psn games away for free ie. calling all cars,mortal kombat 2 & a few others that i cant remember,as the online aspect of these games are virtually barren.
Not saying anything bad about these games infact calling all cars was awesome with 2 player splitscreen online play & MK2 is a classic.
It would be cool if an online community was created for underrated/unknown games out of this psn outage!

Interesting choice of "Goodwill gesture".

To make use of it you will no doubt need to sign up for autobilling once the free period has expired. Cancelling is something they will be hoping many users either forget to do, or get hooked and remain as paying subscribers.

Yes I am being cynical.

How much is 1 month of PSPlus? I'd rather have that in store credit so I could use the goodwill to purchase something which would still have any value AFTER the first 30 days is gone.

1 month works out to about $4 or $6. at $50 plus tax its around $4.50 a month but at the 3 month its almost $7. provided they want you to buy it for the year.

Joystiq just posted details on how many PSN accounts are registered in each country. The U.S. has BY FAR the most accounts, followed by the U.K., Japan, France, and (I believe) Canada. Some of the accounts in the top three countries are no doubt secondary accounts of people from other countries, but it's clear that the U.S. has the most users (31 of 78 million).

It's still on the front page for PlayStation news, if you want to see for yourself.

It makes no sense to open service in the biggest market first. You start with a smaller group in case something doesn't quite work right, so you have time to fix it before more people are affected, just like with a beta test.

hey lm sorry about whining .... lm 53 not 8 .... l dont have no idea how computers work .. l dont even own one ... had a friend bring a lap top over ,to turn my internet box on.... l read press release ... l thought they be turning on online gaming now & the rest when they figuure it out .... remember they said a day or two at first .... that was SONY too.... if they said 2 weeeks .. l would of been fine with that . this ps3 is the only reason l have internet on ..... so if it was going to be off for a month or 2 ... could of turned off internet a month r 2 .... if l knew .. l guess l miss playing online golf miss competition .... single rounds is not cutting it , l guess ----- SORRY AGIAN l will shut up to .... signed the POB

I'm really interested to see how the inFamous 2 beta is gonna be any help to the devs at all, seeing as how people had at max two days to actually play around with it. I really hope they extend the deadline on it, especially since the store's coming back online at the end of the month.
