PSXE Poll Update: PSN Outage Bad, But Not Crippling

After the nightmare week Sony had, we wanted to know how the lack of a PlayStation Network has affected your entertainment.

For many who use the PSN to download movies and TV shows, and tend to play a lot of multiplayer, the loss of those services was bound to chafe. But in our recent poll, the majority admitted to being a little upset about the whole fiasco, but they're trying to be patient. In fact, a great many said that because they still have their single-player fun, things aren't so bad. We do tend to have older gamers (and a lot of RPG fans), who aren't too hooked on Network-related entertainment, but the lack of a PSN has definitely affected just about everyone to some extent. As you've already heard, some services will be back online this week, which is good news (even if we'll still be missing the Store).

But now that you've had time to process the whole situation and some time has gone by, how do you feel about the PSN in general? Has this ordeal shaken your trust in the service? Are you convinced this is an isolated incident and Sony has taken appropriate strides for the future? Or have you determined to spend more (or all) of your time with Xbox Live as a direct result? Let us know.

I'll say this. The only thing I'm not going to trust are all those pro-Xbox, pro-MS websites that claim to be neutral but are clearly biased.

From now on, no more visits to IGN, GameSpot, 1up or any other so-called "neutral" website. I've had enough with the arrogant & cocky "journalists". I've had enough of the idiots and grammar-mangling morons who frequent the message boards and comments sections. I've had enough of the people who take video gaming way too seriously that it dominates their life. I've had enough of the liars who blamed Sony and not the hackers for the PSN shutdown.

It's amazing what a handout can do for somebody's credibility.

I'll stick to websites like PSX Extreme where honest opinions and the truth can be found.

Everybody else here should boycott all these other websites as they are garbage. Let the people who don't know any better continue to be made fools of. If they want to spend $500 for something that you can buy for $300, well, you know the proverb.

Kotaku doesn't even count in my book. It's just some place run by an arrogant, no-talent jerk who bans people who don't agree with him. I don't know why people visit that site but WorldEndsWithMe's theory seems to fit the bill. Again, some people are way too obsessed with video games to the point that it dominates their life. If they're not playing, they are on a hundred websites talking about it.

Those Google pictures of Brian Crecente...he looks like Russell Brand from Arthur.

Completely agree there.

PSXextreme, while skewed towards PS3 fans, is the most honest and trustworthy and intellectual site I've come across. It's the only site I bother to frequently comment on.

There are so many Wii and 360 fans here as well, but we all share the love of Playstation along with it. I love Gears, Halo Reach (not other Halos though) and Alan Wake. Hey, even Ben, the editor, suggested playing Alan Wake while PSN was down!!

So while we may be fans of PS3, we are far from fanboys, and Ben's consistent work on maintaining that culture here is extraordinary. Keep it up Ben!!

I actually visit IGN once a day, but that's only after visiting this site. And when I do, I only read their news. Their so-called "editorials" are absolute rubbish!

IGN, Gamespot, 1Up, Kotaku, and other sites on the same vein are pretty much only good at spreading FUD anyway. 2007 maybe a distant memory to PlayStation fans, but the "news" those sites put out back then can be a little difficult to forget.

Still love it. The down time didn't really bother me. I don't play online all the time as my main love is SP. I love getting sucked into stories.

The only part that made me itch was the money I've been wanting to spend. I had $38 in my PSN wallet and then I bought a $20 card the day it went down. Now I may have to wait another 2 weeks before the store is back up. What am I to do. Oh well they'll probably have some good sales when it's back.

Hell with it down I actually seemed to nock out 2 platinums faster than usual. Maybe that to is because I came off of retirement from being a achievement whore and now I'm trophy hunting. I do like the trophies more though because there is no point value.

Hacking can happen to anyone, I don't blame sony in the least.

If for example someone managed to steal your credit card number and charge stuff, you wouldn't blame the credit card company for having poor protection.

I'm looking forward to getting the psn back and I don't see any reason to distrust them. If anyone is leery, well start utilizing psn cards and keep your personal info to yourself. Easy.

Eh, the PSN debacle doesn't affect my trust any. I'll keep using it the same as before. I'm not going to live like a paranoid invalid. Sony is putting all of the latest security measures in place to help deter future attacks.

Paybacks for killing 3 of my close buddies who were in the World Trade Center, and my 343 Firefighting brothers who responded.

Bin Laden was apparently killed in a "human operation" that was based on actionable intelligence in a mansion outside of Islamabad, Pakistan.

He was killed in a highly secure compound, built in 2005, that was a virtual fortress of 15-foot-high walls and barbed wire.

The entire operation lasted only 40 minutes and was conducted by an elite team of US Navy SEALS, CIA officers, and other special military commandos.

I will say this - the only reason my Ps3 is on right now is because Im checking PSX :)

I haven't played my Ps3 at all but I have been at the gym regularly :)

I downloaded the Infamous 2 beta as soon as i got the code and i was happy that psn went down cause sucker punch extended the beta and i started doing some really good missions so when the beta is online i can upload these missions and play other missions.
But i wanted to play GT5 Multiplayer also so missed the psn.

Never had an xbox so...

I have been playing single player games, White Knight Chronicles And I just started Final Fantasy 13...

No harm done to my financials as of yet.

No harm done to personal data as of yet also.

Also been playing fighting games to take a break from the rpgs, super street fight 4, marvel vs. capcom 3 which was ruined to an extent in my opinion, and tekken 6.

no money for Mortal Kombat yet, or maybe wait till it gets cheapy

Ya know, I hardly need the thing but I did start to miss it just cuz I like to see who is online, send messages, and just "feel" hooked up. That's probably bad, but I guess I just get annoyed when I'm not plugged in but that doesn't entitle me to stuff.

My credit info is safe like they said and this hasn't shaken my trust in Sony at all.

i was pretty bored when the psn went down. my tv isnt connected to anything but my ps3. so when psn went down, no netflix for me. it wont connect no matter what i did. bought myself a $20 dvd player to watch all my dvds. i dont like playing dvds on ps3 since i want to limit disc drive to a minimum. now its gonna take a while to update my trophies with these offline trophies i got.

i'd still gladly play/buy on playstation network. that outage was due to an outside party. i dont hold sony at fault at all. i read all over other sites i keep reading people blaming sony for it because "they left the key on the door and let the hackers walk in." right, sony did have security in their network. people make it sound like your info was just a word file in their hard drive.

While I'm removing all my credit card info and changing my birthdate on all online services, I still continue to trust Sony and their quality service.

Xbox Live is no more secure. If anything, it'll probably be less secure now that Sony have stepped up their security to ridiculous levels.

Like I said in a previous article, it's not Sony's fault these hackers have a grudge against them. Sony had every right to sue Hotz cos he did something technically illegal. Sony had every right to remove Other OS since it was a gateway for piracy, and even then, it was optional to remove it!!!

I hope many people feel the same as I do in that there is zero sympathy from me. Attacking Sony because they were suing a hacker is the most outrageous turn of events I've heard!! It's like a bunch of thugs attacking your house becuase you beat one of their mates who broke in several days before!! Which side is the law on? Who is the good guy and who is the bad guy in this situation?!?!

I think, with the way Sony have handled this, it will only strengthen Sony's image in the long run. Maybe not over the next 3 months, but like the saying goes, time heals all wounds.

BTW, I know Sony and the Playstation brand has a lot of hardcore followers, but I don't care if there are more Xbots or Nintendo fans compared.

Sony fans are the most mature and intelligent fans I know of, even if they are more outwardly loyal to a brand than some sports fans.

I'm not worried about it. I'm just going to follow protocol and change my password and not sweat the details. I check my account at least three times a week. I use a debit card instead of credit cards. I stay out of trouble by avoiding unnecessary credit.

i was in gamespot on saturday and somebody traded in a ps3 and 11 games towards a 360 squat, it was one of the weirdests scenes i've seen played out in a gametop. when this man who looked at least 40 finally got his 360 in his hands he acted like he won the lottery and started to jump around like a little kid.

My best freind Omar Vazque was just killed by a IED in Iraq on the 24th of April and what a great thing for the American forces to accomplish a week after he past away. Lt. SONY will cop alot for this, there is no hiding from it, but people need to realise that this is a hackers doing & SONY are just trying to fix the issue. I am pretty certain Xbox Live had a problem like this a while back (although not quite as big as this). Stress less, our service will resume eventually, for now just play single player or go outside & kick a ball. Here's hoping the PSN security is more stable this time around.

So Bin Ladin is dead? I guess he used his real details when signing up to the PSN.

Main reason the PSN attack is a bigger deal is cos all the pro xbox websites that claim neutrality are reporting about Sony's fail left right and centre, and writing articles in an attempt to finally sway the ignorant public back into the xbox camp.

If this were to happen to xbox live, the network would be put back up within a few days with only a tiny change to security, and all the gaming websites would hardly report anything cos they don't want to tarnish the image of America's favorite console.

I swear, it's almost become a fashion to hate sony for no reason this gen. MS have a 60 percent fail rate, hardly an eyebrow was raised. Blu ray popularity skyrocketed, no one reports anything. Developers complain about consoles holding back on graphics and game size while everyone is too scared to name 360 as the reason, so the public turn and blame Sony for making the PS3 too complex.

Let's face it, we're surrounded by ignorant morons with more money than sense. They'll support any fad even though the competition is better in so many ways!!

i ended up with a free one month gold membership for xbox live when i created a new profile.
i have red dead redemption for ps3 and 360.
i'd sooner buy dlc for rdr on psn rather than xbox live. i don't know why, i don't feel secure signed into xbox live or making purchases. once i get my ps3 back, i'll have no hestitation making purchases again on psn.

I won't lie. I would be playing some Live on my 360....IF IT WOULDN'T HAVE CRAPPED OUT A WEEK BEFORE ALL THIS! (RROD. What else? This is number 2) Cancelled my Gold not long after. I won't be replacing anytime soon either (out of warrenty anyway). Companies only get stronger after incidents like these. Smart people should know that they should trust a company after a big problem like this even more now because, of course they don't want something like this to happen again. So they take the extra percautions to do so.

Ugh, man it seems people just aren't satisfied with anything Sony does. This article is proof that Kotaku just needs to vanish.

The Headline doesn't even relate to the article much at all. The whole thing pretty much is telling folks Sony's bow meant nothing. I'm like did they need to bow? Did they need to give out free content like they have? No, but they are doing it anyway. It's not anyone died from this whole Network downtime. Jeez.

Well, since the PSN went down...I really had no reason to play my PS3 allday anymore since I spent alot of my free time playing KZ3 online. Then I stopped playing my PS3 and then when I wanted to get back online...it was dead and I just said..."GOOD, now I can get out of my house"...lol I played everything I wanted too already this year, and most games have low replay value for me, so GT5 and random MP matches in KZ3 were all I had until the next big release...which is LA Noire for me. I've been playing GT5 on most nights before I go to sleep, Infamous here or there, tried to play ME2...got bored (too story oriented to really replay and have fun, still the best game ever in my opinion), and actually playing KZ3 campaign over and over...great replay value. Oh yeah...and owning my friend in NBA 2k11. Glad PSN is going to be back up...I want to play some MP here or there and it's free...thank god for that. Not sure why Xbox charges and why people pay for it. That's poor money management.

just finished watching a article on the news.
they had a sydney hacker on there proving what sony and CC card companies is a crock of sh*t!
he showed several sites with PSN account info, CC info, PSN IDs, passwords, whatever the hell you want!
then he showed how easy it is to hack into servers and do whatever you want, he even went online and purchased a 5K TV, then did some text editing and the price magically changed from 5K to 0!
then did the same with movie tickets, ordered 3 adult gold class passes and he did not get charged a cent!
just proves you cant trust what these fat cats tell you!
one things for sure, im never putting my personal or account info on a site ever again!

I haven't been affected by this at all, minor worries about the credit card ordeal, but other than that fine. I've been so buys with my PSP on Dissidis Duodeciem and Final Fantasy IV i havent even been on my PS3 for 3 weeks.

Yeah, I'm not gonna lie.

SOMETIMES ill just read an articles name and not the articlee and then make a post.

But only for articles that I :

1. Know about (sometimes that I THINK I know about)
& 2. Have have heard about or heard rumors about the topic.

So sometimes I just share my thoughts before reading. But never about the article I don't know about. I always read those.

A good example of areticles that I only read the name of is anything wkc2 related. Than I just post that I can't wait for it and how stoked I am.

On topic : I'm gonna have to sign on to psxe on a computer more eften so I can take part in these polls. I don't think I can from the mobile site...
I'm glad sony will be putting parts of the psn back up for all those who sorely miss it, but it being down still doesn't bother me. Even if it was up I wouldn't be ale to sign on.

For I am internetless. So I've been playing wkc offline.

As for the service, I've got faith in sony. I'm sure they took neccessary securtiy steps with the new and improved psn. So I'm not to worried about that.
