Mass Effect 3 Pushed Into 2012
Many have called 2011 "the year of the RPG." ...but it's just so hard to embody that phrase when you lose a BioWare gem. :(
It was guaranteed to be one of the biggest titles of the year, and destined to be near the top of the holiday sales charts. Sadly, BioWare has announced that Mass Effect 3 has been delayed until the first quarter of 2012. Maybe they're just going for symmetry; ME2 launched for the Xbox 360 and PC in January 2010 and for the PlayStation 3 in January 2011. Of course, January would be an optimistic estimate, considering the rather vague first quarter window. Said series executive producer Casey Hudson:
"The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone's expectations."
So unfortunately, we won't be able to assume the role of Commander Shepard until next year. That's bad news for role-playing fans but hey, there are still plenty of RPGs scheduled for 2011, including The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which is set to arrive in November. And besides, it's not like there will be a lack of games during the holiday rush...

If that's your sole reason behind not playing ME2 and planning on skipping ME3 I feel bad for you. You really are missing an excellent story.

When asked about the delay, EA boss John Riccitiello said, "Essentially, step by step, [BioWare is] adjusting some of the gameplay mechanics and some of the features that you'll see at E3 that can put this into a genre equivalent of shooter-meets-RPG, and essentially address a far larger market opportunity than Mass Effect 1 did and Mass Effect 2 began to approach."
Man, I thought the delay was to make a "better" game. Instead, visions of Splinter Cell Conviction are running through my mind. I trust Bioware but this decision looks like one being made more by the publisher than by Bioware.
Truly, was last gen (PS2/Xbox) the final largely unfettered console development environment?
