Mass Effect 3 Pushed Into 2012

Many have called 2011 "the year of the RPG." ...but it's just so hard to embody that phrase when you lose a BioWare gem. :(

It was guaranteed to be one of the biggest titles of the year, and destined to be near the top of the holiday sales charts. Sadly, BioWare has announced that Mass Effect 3 has been delayed until the first quarter of 2012. Maybe they're just going for symmetry; ME2 launched for the Xbox 360 and PC in January 2010 and for the PlayStation 3 in January 2011. Of course, January would be an optimistic estimate, considering the rather vague first quarter window. Said series executive producer Casey Hudson:

"The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone's expectations."

So unfortunately, we won't be able to assume the role of Commander Shepard until next year. That's bad news for role-playing fans but hey, there are still plenty of RPGs scheduled for 2011, including The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which is set to arrive in November. And besides, it's not like there will be a lack of games during the holiday rush...

That is disappointing news, but like you said, there are other offerings to hold us over until it releases.

Once again, there are way too many great games coming out this year anyways. And even though I think this game would have sold well in the holiday season regardless of what other games it may have gone up against, it'll definitely sell better now in the barren month of January.

And now all the *other* gaming websites have to decide which other game to annoint as GOTY before they've actually played it. :P

I was looking forward to hiding out in my room playing this and Uncharted 3. I guess it's now Uncharted 3 and Batman Arkham City to play during the holidays.

Honestly that is never going to happen. I believe that Microsoft has a death lock on the original title. They did bring the interactive comic ot the ME2 disc and while it wasn't the same as playing the first game it did a decent job letting you choose story relevant paths.

If that's your sole reason behind not playing ME2 and planning on skipping ME3 I feel bad for you. You really are missing an excellent story.

Pretty much this, ME3 could never get released and I would be happy with those two.

Darks Souls is unproven, but if its anything like Demons Souls...I'm all in.

And to the guy who doesn't care about ME3...yeah, your speaking for yourself.

Not surprised one bit considering the two GOTY contenders in Uncharted 3 and Elder Scrolls V coming out in November.

Too many games....wallet overload...boom! haha. I'm glad it got delayed. June 7th is going to bankrupt me. Operation Flashpoint, Infamous2 and Red Faction Armageddon. Which the demo is really awesome on the xbox.

Take your time bioware, I can wait.

I want this mass effect to not be inferior to the xbox 360 version.

For the most part, ME2 already accomplished that. Granted, both versions had their strengths, but laying down a definitive "inferior" claim for any one platform is just wrong.

The ps3 looked way better with mass effect 2. Mainly because it used the thirds graphics engine.

It was inferior due to the frame rate that was my only problem.

I absolutely don't mind. I can respect any decision to forgo the holiday rush of sales to take the time to make a better product. Besides, the later half of this year is jam packed with excellent games as it is.

This year is so good anyways. Also, this indicate that they definitely are not just wrapping a new story on an old engine, but creating something genuine. I dig that.

So, ME3 will be goty 2012 instead then. :)

This is in my top 5 for sure. It's definitely dissapointing, but you're right, there will be plenty other 30+ hour time consumers this year. They can take all the time they need to polish this baby up.

Truth is if they're using this time to make it better then I will keep my mouth shut. I'm still hoping it will be released reasonably early next year though.

However as it's been mentioned there are numerous titles to still look forward to.

Okay, so I just read a statement made reported by Joystiq:

When asked about the delay, EA boss John Riccitiello said, "Essentially, step by step, [BioWare is] adjusting some of the gameplay mechanics and some of the features that you'll see at E3 that can put this into a genre equivalent of shooter-meets-RPG, and essentially address a far larger market opportunity than Mass Effect 1 did and Mass Effect 2 began to approach."

Man, I thought the delay was to make a "better" game. Instead, visions of Splinter Cell Conviction are running through my mind. I trust Bioware but this decision looks like one being made more by the publisher than by Bioware.

Truly, was last gen (PS2/Xbox) the final largely unfettered console development environment?

Kind of a mixed bag. ME is popular because of it storytelling. But if they can enhance the gameplay, great, but I hope Bioware isn't catering to action heads while forgetting to create a great story. They most likely won't, but one has to wonder. Michael Bay killed Transformers for me, EA don't ruin ME for me.

Man this was really the only game I truly wanted this fall. UC3, Batman AC and Skyrim are up there, but I was truly anticipating this. But the delay works out, buy other games during this time and hopefully have a great game in January.
