EA: Battlefield 3 Designed To "Take Down" Call Of Duty

When facing down the most popular franchise in US history, confidence is essential.

And while DICE has issued confident words before concerning the upcoming war between Battlefield 3 and the new Call of Duty, EA CEO John Riccitiello has just made the boldest statements yet. In an investor's meeting, the EA boss acknowledged that they have a "big competitor" but at the end of the day, DICE has the best horse.

"But head-to-head with Call of Duty in Q3, we have the superior game engine, a superior development studio, and a flat out superior game. Our goal is to significantly gain share in the huge FPS category and to put the other team on defense."

As most everyone knows by now, Battlefield 3 utilizes DICE's new Frostbite 2 engine, which has looked amazing in early game footage. On the flip side, CoD has used the same engine (oft-upgraded, of course) since 2005 and Activision has said it's "counterproductive" to build a new one. Added Riccitiello:

"A lot of people are telling us they want to play this game on day one. This game is designed to take that game down. If you’re looking for a battle of the titans – Red Sox vs Yankees… Microsoft or Google – and what the tip-off point is for this holiday season, this is it."

Well, even the most optimistic analysts aren't willing to say Battlefield 3 will outstrip the new CoD (likely Modern Warfare 3) in the sales department. But as far as many gamers are concerned, what matters most is the overall quality...and at this rate, it's hard not to put DICE in the driver's seat.

Just bear in mind that the new CoD should be announced very soon...

I agree it probably wont, CODs fanbase is too large and COD wont change the formulae anytime soon so they'll keep gettin the same game over and over and think its amazing.

Have you not realized yet, the COD masses care nothing about graphics. It's all MP perks and maps.

COD will outsell BF3 2:1, I can just about guarantee that. It is sad because Battlefield is a great game and you can tell that they try to put the best game possible on the shelf. Unfortunately, it just doesn't matter to most. Especially todays 'twitch' crowd.

Don't get me wrong, it will still sell good but no way it comes close to COD.

And yet again I think we'll see a higher quality FPS sell less than CoD. I'm hoping Battlefield 3 can pull off an upset, but I'm not holding my breath.

I do know one thing though, and that's that I'll be owning BF3 come this fall, and not CoD: whatever the hell it is now.

It's insane... I hope COD goes down. Battlefield 3 is partly the reason I am moving over to PC for these types of games, but keeping the PS3 for exclusives.

It looks superb and I can't wait for it...

This is why I love DICE! This is good guys, this is good for us all because its all competition. Last time I checked competition was a good thing because when there is competition, there tens to be a quality product. If DICE is competing with Call Of Duty, then guess what? Call Of Duty will return the favor and maybe, just maybe, Call Of Duty might change their engine and it might be a playable title.

I'm positive it will be a better game, but the problem is they admitted they won't "dumb down" the game. CoD nuts kind of need the game to be as simple as possible. If you add one single change to the controls from the CoD set up then the game becomes unplayable to those fans.

Quality does not equate to high sales the way it should. Mediocrity is popular.

I only just watched that 12 minute gameplay vid on youtube. Holy cow I had no idea. I'm not big on fps, the last one I bought was Killzone 2 but heck, I may just get this.

Either that or show it to my fps inclined brother, then he can buy it.

I don't doubt for a minute that 'Battlefield 3' will be superior to whatever 'Call of Duty' brings this or any other year. Heck, I've yet to play a 'Call of Duty' that was superior to 'Battlefield 2', so this is about as sure as it gets.
Of course, 'Call of Duty' still has a name brand to sell it's games in considerably larger amounts than 'Battlefield' will likely ever reach, but that won't matter to non-bandwagon first-person shooter fans.

Sales no, but BF:BC2 was better then Black ops.
I still think that COD4:MW is COD's best game. I loved it. Hated COD ever since because they can't improve on there game.

I hope FPS players(COD ppl are not gamers)will wake up and realize that the last 3 games all have been the same thing. Battlefield and Kill zone has been the number one FPS for years now.

BF3 is day one buy for me!

@little big midget, eventually, enough outdated installments in the franchise will send player's some where else. I've said it before and i'll say it again. Any industry that's prime focus deals in sales of electronics are always going to have to innovate in order to continue to appeal to the masses. Codmw3 will likely out sell BF3, but what is going to happen if the new cod does nothing to innovate and all people start trading the obsolete "activision doomed" franchised for something a bit more advanced? That would be a stat that i'd like to see. (ratio of people whom after playing MW3 are most likely to switch to something like BF3)

People will not care if the next COD and the next is the exact same. The drones will continue to buy from Activision no matter what. My point is that EA has this ridiculous dream of taking COD down, which is never going to happen. Also, if DICE doesn't STFU, they will continue to alienate their console audience. Doesn't need to be revolutionary with every installment, but we are 6 years into this console generation and that game has remained unchanged since it's first installment on current gen consoles. In some aspect it's actually regressed. You would think by now they would at least try to make the game look better. It's like they are stuck in 2005.

They could add a dedicated server and make a new engine or something for the new Modern Warfare game (if it's called that). I'm kind of burnt out on CoD, not sure how the next one will pull me in, I only play with buddies on that but if they didn't play the game I really don't think I would play it to be honest.

It's an alright game, but nothing to boast about.

I am eager to see what both games have in store for gamers though.

Don't see this as a BF v COD because I'll be snagging both day 1 - MW3 for my PS3 and BF3 for my 360 - that way I can switch between the 2 with out getting of my ass!

The only thing that can stop Battlefield from knocking off CoD is the god awful turning speed. A new engine has me crossing my fingers there. Another thing is there are a lot of people that just refuse to adapt their playstyles or switch brands. Personally I prefer the ol' "two hands and a gun" feel because then its a battle of reflexes and who has the better position. Say what you will about CoD's engine and graphics, but I play games for their entertainment value as well.

I saw the 12 minute teaser and it truly is the best looking FPS I've seen, not to mention the part of the campaign I saw it seemed like a real squad maneuvering a warzone instead of the walk here and shoot this style that nearly all other FPS' seem to think we enjoy. I hope they do a demo a week or so before launch.

Heard it before Riti... What I've seen of BF, it certainly looks superior to what I've played of BlOps so far, but I'll make that judgement call for certain whenever I get around to opening up Bad Company 2 (which probably won't be before the release of BF3 at this rate).

But it's good to see that the publisher has such strong belief in the game. It may be slightly misguided, but it should be great nonetheless. Loving the look, but as with any FPS, it'll be a cheap purchase at best. They simply don't hold my interest all that well.

Im not saying cod doesn't have its loyalists, but saying that a reused and recycled game wont start to alienate people would be an unwise statement. Its common consumer behavior when, when a product chooses to become obsolete, then it subjects itself to be left behind. MW has garnered the largest fan base out of any game ever. MW fans likely wont be swayed if MW3 isn't any differrent than the last 4 installments, but if activision doesn't start figuring out ways to keep up with the competition, fans will indefinately get tired of the series and quit buying. The reduction in fanbase will be a slow and steady one, but mind you, it will happen and it will happen soon at activisions current pace.

COD is a tried and tested formula - if it aint broke - dont fix it - since COD4 the sequals are basically new map packs - and that suits me just fine. Im 40 and dont get the time i would like to devote to gaming - so like a lot of other older gamers who get on the PS3 a couple of nights a week with their mates - playing a new version of a game we love and already know how to play makes sense.

As to Activision catering more to the 360 - yes MS pays for the DLC releases first on the 360 - but the 360 live is full of annoying teenagers/kids that I cant be bothered listening too - PSN is not as bad - and PS3 is what most of the guys at my work have. - if it wasn't for Gears of War I could quite easily dump my 360 entirely.

The 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' motto seriously needs to be eradicated. Sure, it works in terms of some things, but gaming is not one of them. As I began my Dead Space review, it all comes back to evolution. Everything needs to progress if it wants to survive. That progression may take five years, or five million. But in today's fast-paced society, everything needs to change quickly, because of, to quote Ben, the instant gratification associated with modernity.

CoD, as good as it may be, is no exception to this rule. Sure, new consumers may buy into it because of the immense popularity of it, but anyone who really plays games knows that there are other options out there that are more advanced in many (every?) way, and sooner or later, they will move over. CoD will stagnate and die if all it has to offer year in, year out is new maps and slightly updated graphics. Everything changes.

lol i already read that pre order from bfbc2 to bf3 are up a whopping 700%. im thinking a wholesome ammount of these people were former cod fans? anyway with that stat. (if u want proof just google bf3)it sounds pretty obvious that while cod is still going to hit heavy this year, its stagnation is starting to wear people out. That tried and true formula only goes so far and with something that, to a lot of people is considered an investment, gaming is expensive and eventually cod will will stop being worth the 60$

There doesnt seem to be any sign of stagnation so far ...
COD is a simple formula - it may not be challenging enough for serious gamers - but as i said before - for the older crowd with limited time to play - COD is a blast - you can get right into it without needing to learn anything new.

This is a magnificant year for games - KZ3,Crysis2, DNF, Homefront,Brink, R3,GOW3,MW3,BF3,U3 - and you can only sneak so many games past the wife under the guise of "but its for the kids" - MW3 is the first on my list (already got KZ3 and Crysis 2) after that I will sneak in BF3 and as many others as I can - but COD will always hold that special place in my heart ...

Stagnation means for something to remain the same without changing, and judging from what I've heard from many CoD players, that is exactly the term that should be used to describe the series, and indeed FPS games in general. There is only so far that the same formulaic nonsense can be pushed.

Go here, shoot this, drive a vehicle here, shoot that, watch a poorly directed cutscene, wash, rinse, repeat. And yeah, I'm talking about the offline, but the online is no damn different. FPS games have really nowhere to go, unless the parkour mechanics of Brink show us something new. Yes, the genre is stagnating, and if you can't see that then you are blind.

Thankyou! But then, how else can you incorporate FPS mechanics into a story? War is the go-to story, and it always makes sense. Now if they could make the war the background of the story and perhaps give us a powerful, emotional personal story of a soldier, I'd be much more interested.

As I've mentioned above, I don't really see how the gameplay can be changed or improved by any great amount, which I find saddening.

Agree. I expected KZ3 to provide a story based shooter, but they dropped the ball in the most predictable way. Not sure any developers going to take time and resources to create a war based story thats actually worth writing home about. The only shooter with a great story is Bioshock, but I can't name one great War story feautured in a game.

And as far as gameplay goes, yeah I don't see any further enhancements unless the world is as dynamic as the player is supposedly going to be. This new engine sounds promising and the new engine in action looks great, more fluid, more personal...so yeah

Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway, Medal of Honor(2010), and Homefront have good, personal stories amidst the chaos of war.
Metro 2033, The Darkness, Singularity, Prey, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, Condemned 1 and 2, and F.E.A.R.. have great stories in FPS form, in my opinion.

Yeah, none of those games have "great" stories especially FEAR. Never played Condemned so I can't speak on that. As far as military shooters og, never played either of aferomentioned games, but I never heard anything great about any of them as far as storytelling goes.

The sad thing is that most of these gamers buying Cod games are not looking for quality. They are looking for simplicity, ease of use, nothing new, same ol' everything. They want to pick it up and not have to learn anything new, they just want to get online and be on top of the mp gameplay.

The truth is that Battlefield games are usually designed to have better graphics, more difficult gameplay, requires more strategy, and is just more battle-like than other games in many ways.

Battlefield will always have a strong following, but Cod is what a large mass of people want. Cod is like the World of Warcraft of FPS. Both of these games are huge because people don't need a large amount of time to learn to play them, it's hop in play a couple hours, come back again when you've' got free time.

Personally this isn't for me, but then again I guess there are a lot of people playing video games these days, not for a challenge, or a story, they just want some combat against other people that doesn't require them to learn something new every time they purchase the next round.

I have no doubt that Battlefield 3 will be the better quality game, but I think Cod will continue to sell better because of who it appeals to. There's nothing wrong with that and I think EA needs to come to grips with that, because if it's all about the numbers, then they're going to have to change battlefield in a way that will lose most of it's followers. I prefer to keep things as they are.

So your upset people like playing games that are playable from the get go....lol j/k Seriously, I get what your saying and agree with it. KZ3 is no different as well, but its better than CoD and BF2. I'll have to see how BF3 turns out though. These guys better stop talking if they can't back it up because if they don't deliver, they'll end up just like Shift 2's developers...embarassed and possibly broke (unliky, FPS sell like crazy)

I'm not really upset over it, just how it is. It's fine, I'm glad we don't all enjoy the exact same thing. I'm never going to run out and pick up a copy of Cod and a millions of other won't either.

However I will rush out to buy Infamous 2 with millions of others, but there will still be millions who don't.

Getting upset over other peoples gaming habits would be like getting upset over other peoples eating habits. As long as you're not snacking on me eat what you will. =)

I prefer realism in my war games ie.brothers in arms & operation flaspoint(more realistic)
Very few people in real life have survived openly running around in a killzone,so if i was to purchase either of these games my money would go to battlefield 3.

It will need some sort of co-op mode or something like zombie mode and online split-screen MP. Battlefield 3 looks great but at the of the day content is king

i am not hating, but Call of Duty after Call Of duty 3 it has been Over rated, I mean I love WOLD AT WAY but anything after that... Battlefield Franchise as always been the ssshh

I run a local game store and started letting people reserve BF3. It might be because its still early I don't have any pre-orders. I know I have gotten plenty of pre-orders for other games this far in advance. I don't have people coming in asking about BF3 they are asking about MW3. Now its not just your little kids asking, its every age group. I'm not sold on BF3 yet, haven't seen game play for the PS3 and well I'd like to play it before I buy it. Graphics doesn't mean anything now its all about game play that's why CoD sells more and more each year. CoDis released every year with the same graphics and pretty much the same game, but each one out sells its predecessor each year. CoD isn't going any where.

When it comes to FPS games, Battlefield in my opinion is the best shooter out there. With so many kids on Call of duty, their will be another round of huge sales again. People who are serious about shooter games it's all about the quality in a game.

Lets face it fellas, the shooter is an extremely saturated genre. i mean with so many devs working in that game type, a food chain is going to start to develop, and the most attractive games out there are gonna swallow up the competition.

I just did a marketing project on games like cod and why they are considered quality. Devs make it "Accessible" to attract casual gamers into playing it, and i respect that a lot, but games constantly change, and when you've been playing games for 10 years like I have, nothing is really unaccessable or difficlt to pick up anymore. Shooters all have similar control schemes, so saying BF3 is too advanced, cod's better because its easier to pick up. Well i've played bfbc2 and cod simultameously and there really isn't a jump in difficulty. The only thing that makes battlefield harder is the scope of the game and the realism, none of which should be considered crutches but reasons to check it out. Cod is very limited as to what you can do in game, bfbc2 is quite the opposite, especially with vehicles and a much wider ammount of armaments at your disposal.

Cod just like every other product in any product line will have its decline stage and it will happen, but when? is the question. Eventually, activision is likely going to put the franchise in such a rut that people will eventually start to discredit that tried and true formula. Its just a primitive game and realistically activision isn't trying to make cod "all it can be" its simply another way for Activision to line its pockets. Case in point would be the fact that activision isn't even following supply and demand pricing. Who want's to spend 60$ on a year old game? They're just trying to suck the consumer dry. Its more about the money for them and less about evolving the industry, and activision has been that way for as long as I can remember. IF I WERE A COD FAN, i'd be worried that my game of choice is being controlled by a mediocre producer like activision. Start looking somewhere else guys because soon enough, COd is going to give you a reason to expand your horizons.

The final point im going to make in this prolonged rant is that consumers should put their money toward a game that proves the dev's are passionate about the hobby. DICE has already proven its committment to excellence. So, as a fellow gamer, wouldn't you rather put a 60 dollar investment towards a game that developers are passionate about, a game that doesn't stop at profit margins or whathave you, but a game that devs have worked tirelessly on in order to perfect. To sum it up. DICE deserves to rake in the greenbacks for its committment to excellence so long as cod remains to be a franchise that is more about the profit and less about providing an experience for the consumer.

Consumers will put their money towards what they find the most fun. If you dont get a lot of time to game - and want a quick blast of FUN - then Im afraid COD is without peer.

Not everyone has the time to play the more 'challenging' games - obviously COD is bags of fun or people (the 'sheep' as gaming snobs like to refer to anybody who likes COD) wouldnt buy it.

Maybe one day that will change - but no time soon.

Ill be buying BF3 as well - as I hope most people will and keep this genre at the top.

Personally, I found Black Ops fun for the first three hours of playing, and since then it has simply been drudgery. I really fail to understand how people can sink hundreds upon hundreds of hours into it, but we obviously have different tastes. I firmly believe that the FPS genre NEEDS to be knocked from its lofty pedestal so that we'll get some more games that actually let you have fun through using your brain. The perversion of all genres into the quick, brainless action of FPS is most certainly NOT a good thing for anyone who likes to take their time.
