Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3 Possible For Sony's NGP?
These days, portable gaming is a big deal.
EA has listed "handheld/mobile" releases for both DICE's Battlefield 3 and BioWare's Mass Effect 3. Now, they could only be referring to spin-off titles for the iPhone or Android, but there is the slight possibility that we could be looking at Nintendo 3DS or Sony NGP releases. The latter might be powerful enough to run both full next-gen titles (although we imagine even the NGP couldn't quite handle the insanity that will be Battlefield 3). Both "handheld/mobile" versions of the games in question are slated to arrive at about the same time as their full counterparts: Q4 2011 for DICE's shooter and Q1 2012 for the epic RPG. I can't imagine who would want to play ME3 on a freakin' iPhone, but whatever. I know I'm out of the loop.
We'll have to learn a bit more about the NGP's planned launch schedule before making any further predictions.

Games are too complex, often forcing the player to use eight buttons and two analogue sticks almost as soon as the game is begun. While this poses no issue to veteran and 'core' gamers, it really does become a problem when trying to draw a ner set of people into the hobby. Sure, fingers are unused, but if it means an added layer of complexity and ingrained difficulty for all players, and not just casuals, then how is the requirement of using more a good thing?
That being said, I hope that the NGP does allow for new gameplay techniques. There's really no reason for it not to, considering the myriad of input options. But if it comes down to blowing into the microphone to simulate blowing up a balloon, that's where I'm crossing the line.
Peace.

If these games were to be full awesome games on the NGP and were similar to their PS3 brother, holy moly that would be an epic launch lineup next to uncharted and modnation!!!
Battlefield 3 on a handheld!?!? Even if it is downsized slightly, if the gameplay is the same as the conse version (cept with touch screen functionality) that would make me go out and buy am NGP day 1!!!

I think it's a good idea to get big name franchises to help push the NGP on launch, then once there's a large base start pushing new franchises and games designed for the NGP exclusively.
I trust Sony. They know what they're doing. It's not like if MS were to release a handheld gaming device, all that would be on it are Live Aracade ports, Gears, Fable, Forza and Halo portable. Problem is, the ignorant masses would still buy it, even if Halo and Gears portable were the only good games on it.

I won't underestimate the power of future handheld technology.
I have an iPhone 3GS and I'm utterly blown away by how good Infinity Blade looks. We're talking razor sharp looking UE3 quality graphics. It has to be seen in person to be appreciated. Now, it's a fairly simple game, linear etc. But the fact that this coming from a flipping cell phone? I can only imagine what a dedicated gaming handheld device that's larger in dimensions could churn out. This will be an interesting market to watch and see develop. Even Sony seems to think that a big future of their gaming market is with the handhelds.. perhaps they know something we don't.

But it's just a gimmic indeed. I'll bet it's not even the same developers behind it. It can't be.
That being said... ME on NGP? Oh yes please ma'am. I'd friggin' buy a NGP first day was a Mass Effect bundled with it. And I am not kidding.

Nevertheless, I'd buy a Battlefield for the NGP before the CoD that's supposed to be coming out for it. I just hope that the device follows in the footsteps of the PSP and is laden with RPGs.
Peace.
