Konami Seeks To "Close The Gap" Between PES And FIFA

Over the past few years, EA's FIFA franchise has been the reigning king of the soccer genre, in terms of both sales and critic reception.

But Konami says they're "closing the gap" between their Pro Evolution Soccer series and FIFA. UK general manager Pete stone admits PES may never top EA's extremely popular franchise in the sales department but in regards to quality, they believe they can reclaim the adoration of both gamers and critics. Remember, at one point, Konami was outstripping EA... Said Stone:

"I donít think thereís a massive gap in terms of the playability. There are certain areas we need to improve, but itís not a huge gap Ė and weíre gradually closing it. We may not outsell FIFA, but we can sell enough so that itís good from our point of view. Donít think of it as a battle where weíre trying to Ďwiní, or outsell them, because thatís not necessarily the case.

Weíve made progress and thatís beginning to be noticed, but weíre also going to spend a few years rebuilding PES and sales. Itís a long process."

Soccer fans can be a demanding bunch, so it's important for developers to put their best foot forward. ('cough') It can be difficult to take on a name that has become synonymous with video game futbol, but Konami has proven themselves before in this department, so why can't they do it again?

I used to like when the series was called Winning Eleven. The name always seemed to grab my attention. It gave me the feeling that no matter what team you chose, it was the best. I stopped playing the series when it jumped to the next gen consoles. They seemed to gotten framerate issues. As for PES 2011, WOW! they have really made a change for good. I can't wait and see what the 2012 will bring to the table.

all my mates used have pes and only pes, now weve all switched to fifa. Pes say the same thing every year, yet every year (this gen) its not been anywhere near as good as fifa. Online with pes is a joke.

Well this is an American site and it's called soccer in the US. Yeah, calling a game football when only 2 players on a team touch the ball with a foot is stupid, but it isn't gonna change the name. Soccer isn't even that bad, SOCcer = asSOCiation football. Not that horrible of a name.

in america, its soccer, since ben lives here, and quite a few readers are from here, the term soccer is applicable. Not even worth getting mad over it, its been this way for a long ass time now, deal with it

By all means, Ben can call it whatever he wants.

As long as I can call American football eggball. :)

someone needs to knock EA off the podium, maby it'll be konami.
until EA loses the rights to any top name sports brand, like nascar for example.
EA has nothing to worry about, hopefully konami will make heads turn and make people take notice that their are other devs that can put out a great sports game other than EA.
good luck konami

I don't think EA lost the Nascar license. They probably gave it up since they were not making any profit off of the games. I don't think that many people bought Nascar games. I tried it and did not like it at all.

I personally reckon that FIFA's overrated - played FIFA WC 2010 after hearing how much better it was than PES these days, and was bitterly disappointed - there's input lag, the plays are scripted, the AI can't read the play for quids. Went back to PES and sure, the graphics weren't as snazzy and the animations were clunky, but the actual game of soccer felt far more like a real game of sport.

Fast forward to PES 2011, and FIFA's still the one with something to prove. FIFA is the CoD to Pro Evo's Brink or BC2 - FIFA is wildly popular, and more polished, but PES provides deeper, more satisfying gameplay and a more dynamic, sports-like experience.

Agreed, I try real hard to like FIFA10 like I LOVED PES 2005, but it just doesn't come off. A.I Is tottaly scripted, and are programmed to be cheating litte f***s :(

However, playing fifa10 with manual controls against someone with a decent connection, is better than PES by some stretch.

But FIFA10 has some real big problems I personally can't ignore (the manger mode is a total joke. I can beat Manchester Utd 5 - 0 with Birmingham then the board is saying 'meh..' then I can lose against Chelsea and all of a sudden I'm close to losing my job! Awesome!), among many, many other annoyances.

How is it a slow process considering EA went from crap to excellence from 2008 to 2010/11. PES fans took it hard when they saw Fifa pass their game at the speed of light lol.

Anyway I don't like their attitude. Sounds defeatist. Like ''meh we're not really trying to go for the win y'know... We don't aim for better sales... We don't really care about giving our customers the better experience...'' XD

The are missing some drive and it is not motivating me to buy their game over Fifa lol

The most ridiculous thing about this is Konami have said the same thing for at least the last 3 years. Its been bad for them though because while they have being saying these things they have failed to deliver a product to appeal. The reason FIFA has been so succesful especially over the last 3 years in different reasons is because they finally got it right and made excellent games.
Konami on the other hand have just been trying to keep up with yearly releases and as a result their produt has greatly failed and disappointed.

There's nothing wrong with PES taking a year out if that what it needs to be at least competing with the competition. Cant see that happening though

ya i agree. if they take a year out, and sort everything then they can take back the crown from FIFA.

yea, good luck with that!
i really enjoyed fifa 10, pes on the other hand............

just got back from the infamous 2 launch party in sydney.
my god that games going to freaking ROCK!
got to play a massive boss battle half way through the game, and the first 3 hours from the game except the beast battle of course, they did not want to spoil it which was good i want some surprises.
got a few pics with the devs, and tried to squeeze out whats happening with PSN but of course they played dumb.
cant believe they still have not got a date set yet!
how can you announce a date for the US months ago, be 3 weeks away from its release, and not know when everyone else is going to get it?
this is what pisses me off about sony so much!
US gets everything, and first, everyone else later, if theres any crumbs left!
they get the entree, main and desert, and everyone else gets the leftovers!
devs a smart a$$ though, was constantly grilling us on choles makeover.
i understand they wanted to make this feel like a new game, but come on this new chole is a douche!
he looks so ugly, and hes voice is annoying as hell!
bring back our beloved chole!

I loved PES when i was younger, but Fifa suddenly became better after 2008, and i just switched. PES doesnt really game good dribbling among other things. but i really hope it becomes better than Fifa soon, because i feel most of the hardcore football fans played PES and it also has that ridicuously addictive Master League.
