PSN Update: Additional Testing And Checks Still Required

We had heard some PlayStation Network services would return this week but obviously, that hasn't happened.

Sony has been updating on a fairly consistent basis since this thing exploded, and their latest report can be found at the PlayStation Blog. As you might expect, the company is desperately trying to insure the security of their rebuilt Network:

"As you may know, we’ve begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online."

They say their "utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe," so that's encouraging. What's a little discouraging is the fact that they "were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers." ...although, that does raise the question: is the PSN and SOE problems more closely related than we thought? The SOE security breach wasn't discovered until later, after all.

I said it before and I'll say it again...

Take your time Sony. I'm in no rush to get back online. I'd rather PSN be fully tested and restored in 100% working condition than rush it and have it fail once again a few days later.

As an old-school gamer, I love single player games. They help me escape reality for a brief moment while online competitive mulitplayer slaps me in the face with harsh reality of competition. If I want competition, I'll challenge everyone in the real world, not an imaginary one. Let me play a hero in my own time.

Anyways, I am appalled at how many people on sites like IGN, N4G and Kotaku and saying they're trading their PS3's towards 360's. It's just a harsh reminder of how people these days prefer "quality" service over a quality product. Hopefully, once they realise Gears 3 is the only good game to come out this year and there's nothing better to play, they'll buy back their PS3's and jump back on PSN again.

It really amazes me how addicted this generation is to online and social connectivity that they are willing to switch consoles cos it is down for a few weeks. Anyone seen the episode of South Park where the internet is down and the entire world goes into chaos? Yeah, similar thing.

I hope they think about backup servers or something if this is ever going to happen again... They keep adding anti pirating software to our games and they keep reducing the content they give us on discs for us to activate those little vouchers but then when their shit goes down we cant play our games anymore... Wish they realized that and stopped making everything DLC all the time. Just like old times... 1 cartridge... 1 full game with full resale value... No complications yay

I've been perfectly content with the PSN down. It has given me a chance to dust off games I probably would have never played again. I started replaying Final Fantasy 8. I can't put it down, i'm about 14 hours in and expect to devote at least another 30-45 hours.

you know what would be nice is a statement that goes like this... we are runiing internal testing on psn and if everything goes well it will be restored by insert time. i guess we are down to 2 days since they said a week last sunday.

i hope everything goes smoothly and we can put this ordeal behind us. this whole psn mess has been like a blackhole in gaming. sucking up all the regular headlines and spitting out anti sony headlines instead. will it ever be the same? how much has this impacted ps3 sales? how long before sony gets consumer confidence back?

i guess only time will tell.

I just don't think anyone can say with confidence when it will be up. Testing will always reveal more holes to patch up and more security concerned to be addressed. It's the kind of thing that can't be seen without raising Nostradamus from the dead and asking him.

Hey all. I'm new to the comments so just wanted to say hi first. Second, what is up with all the so called "fans" of the PlayStation? I hear all this about switching to a crapbox if PSN is fixed immediately! I say go, ya bums. Do you want the PSN to be unsecured so the hackers can have their way with you? Then by all means, start it back up right now. Geez people, get a life. Have you ever heard of this crazy thing called "outside?" Maybe you should try it out.

I think a lot of those people are either kids or Xbots who finally got around to buying a PS3. As you can see most of us around here and on some of the other Playstation dedicated sites are waiting patiently for PSN to come back online.

@Jawknee: I'm sure you're right, but it still annoys the crap out of me. I've actually been following this site since I got my PS3 and know that most of you fine folks are very level headed and put a lot of thought into what you say. Which is why this is the only gaming website that I come to. IGN and their ilk are so biased toward the s***box it makes me sick. Anyway, glad to be here and look forward to more great comments from all of you.

Indeed. I've decided that I am not going to even bother with those sites any longer. The only thing I like about IGN still is their video previews they do every now and then but other than that, I'm done with that site along with the rest of the biased sites. This site is indeed the best place to get fair news and it has the best community.

I just want to use my Netflix, don't care about gaming online right now. My Netflix was working at first but a week ago it stopped loading movies saying I need to be connected. It sucks because I like to turn on Netflix on my PS3 when females come over and sit back drinking.

Dude just sign in and when the maintenance message comes up hit O, then it will ask you to do it again, after the 2nd time it should load up. Sony needs to put that on their blog I've told like 60 people already. lol

That's what I've been doing since PSN first went down, it doesn't work anymore. The same thing happened to my friend yesterday, eventually it asks if you are a Netflix member and makes you put your password in again. After you do that the movies won't load anymore.

Hmm might want to check and make sure everything's ok on the subscription end of things then. Other than that I really don't know why it would do you like that. There was an instance where I had to re-register my netflix so I could stream to ps3, but that was pretty self explanatory as far as what to do.

I'm going to buy Brink. It's the only online game I plan to purchase this year (aside from inFamous 2 [Hero Edition]). I hope to God that PSN returns soon. If it doesn't return soon, then that's just fine with me. I'm not going to get a f@gbox just because of this. I'm a loyal PS3 fan(boy if you will) and this isn't going to change my view on PSN or Sony ONE BIT. I just wish that they would give us some sort of estimate.

In other news Anonymous says they will be testing the new security thoroughly, so Sony better be up to the challenge. It wouldn't help anyone to bring it back online incomplete.

So right now the main reason I want it back online is so this epic fail of a story (that most sites have gotten all wrong) can just go away.

I read some CNET rumor that a third attack was being planned for the weekend. It's ridiculous what they'll print for hits. If it's to be taken seriously though I don't think they'll restore the network while they're being threatened.

I know as much about building a PSN as I do about building a spaceship. The thing that worries me is hearing all the smart people saying nothing is hack-proof. It doesn't bode well for PSN mkII. After all, the xbox fanboys responsible for this still have plenty of time on their hands (no games). Perhaps Sony should throw a few scraps their way to distract them.

I'm not even going to lie, I'm pissed that the PSN is still down. Reason being, I bought SOCOM 4 for some intense team tactical multiplayer and a day later the network is shut down....WTF MAN!!! lol. I mean I beat SOCOM on elite mode and everytime I look at the game case, it laughs at me saying "Haha you can't play me"

In other words, they've rebuilt the network and it's presently closed to the outside world. In the meantime Sony's third party security consultants are attempting to hack the system using whatever means they can to test the security. I kind of get the feeling that Sony is taking this extra precaution after discovering the SOE hack early this week, and in light of the threatened third attack by Anonymous. Frankly, at this point, they don't know how long, because the testing will take as long as it takes. Once the third parties are satisfied that they can't hack the network as it stands, they'll give Sony the all clear. I hope they do a good job.

I read on Kotaku just a few minutes ago that some members of Anonymous told the Financial Times that it was indeed some of their members who did this despite some of them claiming it wasn't. Their basic point was(besides the fact they saw some members discussing the exploits they found that made this possible in the IRC chat rooms)that anyone hacker can attack anyone and claim they are Anonymous. That's the point of being...well, Anonymous. So naive for people to assume it wasn't them or take their word for it when they claim it wasn't them. I have no idea why people are so willing to believe anything those low lifes say.

I don't care how long it takes as long as I know that Sony is doing everything they can to make it safe from hackers. I know nothing is hack-proof, but I'd rather Sony go all out now while it's already down, then to have to deal with it being up one day, then down, then up, and so on.

It's down now, so fix it, make sure it's right, then put it up again.

Here is my idea, knowing nothing about security architectures: Let the hackers into some sort of dummy space that is moderately difficult to hack, and loop destructive virus packets through it so whoever thinks they got in just busted their whole command centre.

It's from Neuromancer; it refers to Intrusion Countermeasures [Electronics] which are capable of terminating the intruder.

There's apparently real-world security software with that name, but I meant the fictional, lethal variety.

it was apparently suppose to be up today but there was a third attack this morning so thats not going to happen.
they have not announced a new date, this does not exactly strike confidence in me.

Actually as far as I can tell there has been no such attack. As I understand it word of such an attack came from an ultimately unreliable source and therefore there is a strong possibility that it was just hacker bluster.

In any case there is no doubt that Sony is tackling this from every possible angle and taking every possible precaution. As far as I'm concerned Sony can take all the time it needs to make sure the network is as secure and safe as possible from these arrogant, hypocritical, no-good, self-righteous bastards.

I want the new PSN to be as secure as possible so Sony can take all the time it needs. I have many games to distract me from the outage so I will live. When it does goes up though I expect that it may crash simply because everyone and the Mother will be logging on and syncing up at the same time. So don't ring the alarm when you experience a slowdown when signing in.

I hope that Sony is implementing some sort of intruder detection program along with a way to trace back to the source. If there is only one thing that I demand through all this chaos it is JUSTICE.

What would be nice is if they implement a system to check incoming PS3 connections, and block any that come through a proxy server in order to terminate those connections made by CFW users who are trying to hide their access via a proxy.

Oh, wouldn't it be a shame is the result of all the attacks on Sony and PSN resulted in a fairly effective and permanent locking of PSN as far as CFW is concerned...

New mock trails are still being impletmented? Well, once the network is restored i'm going start playing Demon's souls, Killzone 3, and Warhawk once more.
Ive acquired myself a HD PVR and have been meaning to record some mutiplayer gameplay.
