"Multiplayer-Focused" Mercenaries In The Works At EA?
The Mercenaries games were always great fun; sorta like a less organized, more out-of-control version of Grand Theft Auto.
But since Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, which released back in 2008, we haven't heard anything about another installment. That's probably for two big reasons: firstly, this sequel wasn't received nearly as well by the critics and therefore didn't sell well, and secondly, developer Pandemic Studios is no more. However, it appears an overhauled Mercs will be headed our way: according to the latest issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine UK, EA is currently cranking on Mercenaries 3:
"EA is making a new, multiplayer-focussed third-person shooter using the Frostbite engine. Smart money says Mercenaries 3."
Well, of course it's multiplayer; the entire planet only wants multiplayer now, right?! ...anyway. It'd be interesting to learn that EA planned to use DICE's Frostbite 2.0 engine; Black Box is using it for Need for Speed: The Run, and it appears to be a versatile and extremely effective engine.
I always liked the highly destructible environments and madcap missions in Mercs, but I do admit the sequel was seriously lacking in a number of different areas. Maybe it really does need a revamping in order to succeed.

The sandbox style was great and it had it's own uniqueness in that setting, but it had several flaws that needed to be worked out.
Hopefully they work out the kinks, and just add multiplayer to a great 3rd installment. Let's not completely change it so that we lose what was good about it.

anyway, id love to see another mercenaries game and FB2 would be the perfect engine for it since its a heavily physics orientated game.
no one does physics engines better then DICE!
only if it has a sp campaign though, i really enjoyed mercenaries 2.
its exactly like just cause 2, f*cked up in every way but you just dont care because its so much fun!
one of the very few series where the ps3 iteration is better then the ps2 one.
