I have plus also and in one of the ps blogs sony said that plus memberships would be extended for as many days as the service is down.

So even if we get the same perks as everyone else we're not losing anything either.

PSPlus members still do not pay to play. What you pay for is access to free games, cheaper discounts, early betas, demos, etc... You are not paying to play. Ok if you want to get technical, about purchases that's fine, but it is free to play regardless. If you never bought one thing off PSN, you would never spend a dime to play. Outside of what you bought the system for of course... Seems free to me. But what do I know?

Also as kraygen said your plus memberships will be extended.

I put between 8 to 14 hours but now that I think about it I actually use it more than 15 hours. I use netflix, shop the store quite a bit, and play online.

I can't wait to be able to sync my trophies again to see how much I've gone up. I'm so close to adding a third plat since PSN has been down.

I'm sooo ready for it to be back, but I can be plenty patient still. Ready to upload an onslaught of trophies to the servers :) That and I have a few friends on PSN I can't contact any other way and miss chatting with my gaming buddies. Outside of that I personally haven't been that upset about it other than the ignorant and poorly (if at all) researched articles on other sites.

This site is the only place I feel I can come for a professional journalist insight. I use to go to Kotaku alot as they are quick to leech others' stories for me to link back to them, but I can't stand the garbage spewing from them as of late. They even had an article recently comparing the PSN outage to MS's RROD fiasco. In the end they were referencing the cost to the company itself however through out the article they were merely using it as a means to bash Sony. Obviously the two are incomparable in terms of anything but the cost to compensate for the trouble of the ordeal and shouldn't even be mentioned.

Its been a while since I've posted on this site until the Thor review so I'm probably back to comment instead of just reading Highlanders awesome posts.

So sorry if I seem like some random guy.

I won't hold any "grudge" against the PSN. I just miss playing FIFA 11 with my buddies.I miss a little gta 4 ALL night until the sun comes up. But what does worry me is the fact that when the psn IS up, the games that we play online will have half , or maybe even less than half of the online players it had before this mess. Games as old as GTA IV will probably have no online users at all. I just hope this is not the case , or it will ruin alot of my online games experiences

I'm actually holding a pretty decent grudge against this. Because it's required to sign into the PSN in order to use your netflix account and watch a movie, I haven't been able to use it for quite some time now.

You can log in to Netflix on any web browser, so you can access Netflix from any other web device. Also, you don't need your PSN account for web access from your PS3. I don't use Netflix, but I was under the impression that once you get your PS3 past the failed logon, you can still kick the browser into action and access things - including Netflix.

I actually signed up for the netflix stream only account just for the PS3 use for my kids through my TV. I don't want to watch it through a computer and the PS3 shows it well. When I use the netflix app, all it does is repeatedly ask me to sign in and won't let me watch movies.

Whenever you start Netflix and it asks for the login go ahead and try, then you get the maintenance message you just press o and it asks you to log in again and press o again after you get the message a second time and you should be good to go. It took a couple tries the first day to figure it out, but thats been about 60% of my ps3 usage since the outage.

Hmm...Have you googled the problem, I've read numerous comments by people who said that they were able to get their PS3 to access Netflix despite that issue. I don't have Netflix myself so I can't test it, otherwise I would to see if I could offer any further advice.

Oh man, I feel for ya!
This is the "trick" to get into NetFlix without PSN.
Go in as you normally would, let the PSN sign-in fail 2- 3 times while NetFlix is loading. And you're set!

Been working for me and my friends this whole time. A bit annoying, but it works.

I agree for the most part, however, there is a part of me that remembers that locks only keep honest people honest, and anyone that isn't willing to encrypt all of their data is asking for some schmuck to come and get it. Long have I shaken a fist at all of the hackers and virus creators and malware and spyware, but even I know if you're smart and take precautions, you can avoid it.

Unfortunately for me, a person who doesn't do much MP, I felt the urge to play BlazBlue and Motorstorm online JUST when this happens. And I haven´t played MP in lke 5 months before this.

Anyway, I beated Dead Space, got to chapter 7 on Ninja Gaiden Sigma (it is REALLY hard) and I´m about to beat Ratchet&Clank: A Crack in Time.

I only used the PSN to check out new trailers, & demos.

But then there was that once upon a time that I put in 66 hours in the KZ3 MP the first two weeks it was out.

Since I'm now suddenly in the unemployment line
it's going to take a long while to get another PS3(barring my USPS insurance claim), but I'd still like to see the PSN up & running with their new & improved Fort Knox sized security.

It would be like giving the ultimate middle finger to all the nay-sayers.

Here's to hoping for that USPS insurance to get you back to your gaming. I'm also wondering whether the Csinos where you are might be in more of a hiring mood since the casinos in the Mississippi valley are out of action for an extended period thanks to historic flooding. Their patrons may go elsewhere and boost business in other gaming centers.

Thanks, my local postmaster told me it takes at the very least, 2 months to go through the claim procedure. And with the recent string of bad luck I've been having lately(just found one of my Harley's 2 front brake rotors is cracked straight through), I can almost see the USPS denying my claim & then I'm forced to go through their appeals process & I have no idea how long that one takes, or if they'll finally pay for me to pick up a refurbed 60 gigger.

Anyway, about the casino's....Nahhh, those Mississippi casino's have very little bearing on Atlantic City as a destination market.

What's killing us besides the economy, is that the big populous state of Pennsylvania has gotten full fledged casino's.

But casino's have always screwed their employees regardless, even in the best of times,
and since Trump up his 3 casino's here, the bondholders have gotten it through the courts after a fight for them by Carl Icahn.
But Icahn was smart, he just turned around & bought all the loan notes on the 3 Trump properties, so if they can't make just one of the bond payments, then he'll call in the notes & get possession anyway. (and I'm sure he's do his own 10% cut of staff too)

And so the bondholders have gone crazy chopping everybody & everything ever since. They started a completely unexpected second round of chops yesterday with dozens of employees getting the boot, and even I was caught in this one. And as the longest running employee at the Taj Mahal, that automatically put a big fat target on my back).

These guys are effing crazy, this is the time that we always gear up for the summer season & hire extra help, now that the Memorial Day weekend is close in hand and we're already seriously short-handed.

But we(the fired employees) all see what they're really up to.....they're saying that they're eliminating our positions, because they're not needed but in 2-3 weeks they'll create those same exact positions as new ones filled with cheap seasonal help, & without benefits. Hell, we're already at about 85% Asian workers(mostly Chinese) in the Atlantic City casino's already.

Yeah, a lot of employers do that to avoid benefits. IBM has a practice of keeping certain contracts to just under the term length to entitle the employee to employer benefits, and then, their contract is not renewed - of course. IBM then rehires others to the same roles and the cycle begins anew, and you know they are not the only ones doing it.

if u have a ps3... yea u REALLY dont need online. Im even more patient now then ever since I preorderd infamous 2. Got the 1st infamous platinum, and now im debating on going back to DS2 and DS1 or working on medal of honor trophies. Either way, all i gotta do is wait a month for a new game. Not a big deal to me if i dont get online back within the week, hell the month even. As far as grudges go... haha yea, like thats possible. Ive been using the playstation since 2001 so im kind of in for the long haul. I was proactive (unlike a lot of other people) by protecting myself and keeping my credit info safe after all if you are going to put your personal info online, its your responsibility to know the risk involved. Sony is far from being at fault here. Hackers can basically do whatever they want. Sony sued geohot for good reason and hackers are just a bunch of useless anarchists so the fact that there was hacker backlash is pretty unsuprising.

In other news, I went to gamestop, talked to the guy over the counter and had to correct his information on the psn hack about three times, so yea, its good to stay educated on the matter.

To sum it up... no real grudges here.

The PSN is free so anyone holding grudge is ungrateful and also really needs some hobbies outside of gaming. I only use PSN for KZ3 and I grew tired of that game a long time ago, but when I do get bored...I like to pop in some KZ3 and hopefully I can play this week. If not, I could careless. Funny thing is, I know alot of casual gamers who just think PSN is down just to be down and not sure why. Seriously, people could care less. It's the nerds who have no life and rape PS forums who are pissed PSN is down. Them and excited Xbox 360 fanboys of course. Hopes its on this week though and I feel sorry for the people who actually bought MP games during this time like Socom, etc.

The only thing I want is the time my DCU is wasting away for and not even the extra 30 days they're going to toss my way. That Batman inspired helmet we're getting looks bad@ss though.

Well hold on there, I would like to point out that yes, access to PSN is free, but they make their profit in game sales and advertisements. If you're going to call a spade a spade, they make money hand over fist with PSN. That being said, they are losing money right now with it down, but don't go on the note that PSN is some "charity because they are being nice" sort of kick. That's like saying Android is cool cause you can find free apps or Apple is cool cause iPhone has a free app store.

Want to know who's online systems are the most secure? Look for the large networks that were recently hacked because you can be *extremly* sure that their security will be as close to 100% as humanly possible when they come back.

However, I'd definitely suggest being careful with CC or debit card information online, not just with PSN.

I've been a Playstion user since the PS1 and I own all 3 PS's...I'm not holding a grudge or even thinking about going to the RROD box (Xbox). Yes...it would be nice to play some multiplayer online but I can think of a hundred things to do in the mean time. As far as Xbox fanboys are concered...um yea...they think PSN is dead and wont come back for a long time, but in the end, when the new PSN comes back better than ever ( always been better the XBL) they'll jump ship saying how great it is. The one thing that makes me mad is all the PSN users who say they are selling their PS3's to get a 360 yet they still post on the PSN blog...if your gonna go...good bye...you are the weakest link! I say good luck with that..and when you get the RROD 2 weeks into owning it dont be surprised that Microsoft won't replace it...just know this...you'll be back to using the great PS3 and PSN!!!

I just miss trading messages with my friends list people, aside from that I use PSN for netflix which works fine anyway. I'm considering trying some multiplayer game modes at some point probably over the summer cuz I don't see much after inFamous 2 and Alice Madness Returns until the holidays. So July could be wide open.

This whole thing has forced me to beat MOH:Fronline on hard for that Plat, beat Bulletstorm sp, beat Portal 2 sp, beat Resistance 2 on Superhuman, get the tomahawk challenges on RDR, and go for(and still going for) Dead Space 2 HC mode. All that plus work, school, and 3 kids has kept my mind off of it. Otherwise, I'm sure I would be pulling out what little hair I have left. Either way, my support is behind Sony all the way. Take your time and do it right. One long outage is better than constant outages.

I don't understand why a lot of people are being so impatient,its like they don't care about the security.I like that sony has they're priorities straight & isn't switching the servers on until they are 100% safe.

I do miss PSN,i met my girlfriend on uncharted 2 & though we talk on the phone we would use the chat functionality 99% of the time,so i miss that.

Being a gamer since the psone days i have no problem kicking back and enjoying good single player games,I've gotten like 3 platinums already and currently working on red dead redemptions.I do miss PSN but i don't mind waiting longer if it means a secure and safe network.

I play once in a while but my kids play for hours when there home and what got me mad i didnt spend 1000+ dollars on the systems, the games, etc for this happend now i gotta deal with my kids mad about this!! sony i want a refund so i can get them a wii or something!

Well, either that, or you could grow a set, tell your kids to be quiet, and teach them that sometimes you have to wait and show patience for good things. That, and sometimes the nasty men in black hats spoil the party for everyone. Whining about being entitled to a refund for a non-essential, free service that is not sold as part of your PS3 might be the fashionable thing to do. But what kind of example are you setting for your kids when you can't even deal with such a slight difficulty in life?

ROCKWORLD, you may be over reacting to some extent. No doubt people are frustrated and angry, in fact some PS3 owners are ditching their PS3's and going the 360 route, but I feel that is really going to the extreme.

Surely you can sit down with the kids and explain. If they are very young it may be difficult, but sometimes these things need to be worked through.

those poll results don't surprise me considering most here are ps fans. i do wonder how such a poll would go out there in the real world. consumer confidence is a funny thing. bad impressions are made really fast, and public perception is so hard to turn around once it starts going against a company. there are a lot of angry and upset people out there right now.

Just curious do you mean gaming online or just how many hours am I typically signed into the network.

Technically it would be over 15 hours that I'm signed in, but the time spent on the network doing multiplayer or home or something like that would average out to less than 1 hour a week.

I play alone most of the time with just a note here there with people on my friends list.

Yes I found that to be a tad confusing too. Cause the ps3 is logged on psn whenever it is turned on (as long as psn is up of course). He must mean the amount of time we actively use any feature that is related to psn.

For me I'd estimate that's about 70% of the time the ps3 is on.
It has to be a really, really good single player game for me to bother playing it for a longer time - it is so lonely compared to tag along with a friend.

btw there is a logical flaw in the poll: You assume that Everyone has over 15 hours game time a week. I can say that my total gaming time a week is nowhere close to that. Three, four hours, maybe five on a good week.
So if I was on PSN my entire time, 100% dependent on psn, I would have to vote for "not much time, really".

Those with multiple consoles will already be getting their online fix from the 360/pc.

Those who only own a ps3 have little or no choice in having to wait. In this instance it's not retaining faith, it's a case of just having to suck it up.

Personally, I'm getting a bit bored of not having it.

Latest news: Shigenori Yoshida tell Bloomberg that Sony has 31st of May as a kind of internall deadline to get Playstation Network going again. But he also say that we will probably be well into june before all features are up and running.

I am afraid not... When I posted the first post this was a story on a norwegian site, but now sites like Gamespot has picked up the story, and it is spreading.

From the looks of it, we should not expect psn to be fully up and running until sometime in june.

And I gotta say, now I am really unsure what to believe about what *really* happened during that attack.

well, the fact that other sites re-post the same story is no indication of factuality, you know how the net works. A hot story gets reposted and takes on it's own life regardless of it's veracity.

Wheher some features are absent for a while or not is a open question that Sony have yet to address. they's said it will be a phased re-introduction and that some features will take longer than others.

As I've tried to make clear to many people, restoring a network of this kind is not a trivial task.

You guys come on, this isn't a conspiracy theory. You are letting this drive you insane an I hate watching it happen. May 31 is the date they are shooting for to have te PSN fully functional, as in all PSN services will be restored. Online Gaming is the first step of this process, and that part of the PSN will be up long before that date.

This is a quote from US Playstation community moderator, Cardinal Rose, via twitter- "For those of you asking: the 31st is the aim for all the PSN services to be restored....(cont)...& restoration of Online game-play across the PS3 & PSP is the first phase of that restoration plan. Online gaming will return before May 31st"

@Highlander: Your loyalty is adoring, but really, no matter how intense one loves Sony, right about now is indeed the time to allow oneself to at least dare consider asking what is *really* going on here.

You don't need a MONTH downtime just to enhance security on a gaming network unless something has gone really, *really* bad, or was in such a poor state that both hardware and software had to be entirely replaced. Something a *lot* worse than the sparse and vague things Sony has posted so far. And if so, you don't need two weeks before "whoops, it'll be a month, gee who'd guessed". Seriously.

One should even dare considering if there isn't at least an *essence* of truth in the stories out there, about obsolete hardware, serious flaws and missing security measurements.

@Bigrailer: At first it was 3 days. Then a week. Then two weeks. And *now* you are telling me we should unconditionally trust what Sony post? I have absolutely no problem in believing that things will take longer than Sony estimate in public. In fact, if we are to learn from experience, that is higly likely.

Actually I don't ever remember them saying 2 days... But regardless they have always, ALWAYS, said that the PSN would not be fully functional when it does come back up, and that only a couple services, including online gaming, trophy syncing, and friends list, would be among the first services to be restored. That was posted on the Psblog in the first weeks. The also said the rest of the services would be up towards the end of the month. All this does is re-emphasize what's already been said!

You do realize they are rebuilding the PSN security, right? They also are moving servers to a new location. Also they will not put the PSN back up until they feel it is safe for us. If this is such an easy task I highly suggest you offer your job expertise to them and get employment through Sony.

At the very beginning psn were said to be back online around the coming weekend, and that was about 3 days.

But when do you think it is likely that they realized this would be a month of work instead of a week?

If I read correctly the stories out there, now it is a question about psn not being up *at all* until the end of this month, with the less important services going live during june.
And this is completely weird in my opinion. It's not like msn was one huge transaction service - a major part of it was just forwarding game requests to game servers!

From the little I know about software and servers, this sounds like the former psn was a nightmare of a patchwork, where every task were intervened and nested into each other. A code base so messy that they had to start all over with clean code. And if so, well, then you have to be a *lot* more than a Sony sympathizer to think this is fair enough, or that "Sony is not to blame".

Im not a Sony sympathizer although I may seem that way because of my abundance of patience. Which is fine by me. But keep in mind if this happened to any company other than Sony I would react in the same manner. At least at this point I can say that.

But stop reading all these articles and actually follow what's going on at Sony and you'll get more clear answers than a misguided judgment article. If you don't have twitter sign up for it just to follow the Sony PR guys. I follow them and get clear answers in 40 words or less. Not a bunch of non sense spread out to make an article out of it. And yes from the first week Sony said they will have online gaming up first as it is the first part of restoration, and full functionality will come at a later date which includes PS store.

Let me clear something up also. Sony controls their future, and yes they control when the PSN will go up and yes I'd much rather it be sooner than later. But I will stand by the fact that Sony is not to blame for the PSN hack or any thing related. It's in their hands NOW, but in no way do I blame them for this terrible terrible incedent!

My loyalty isn't adoring, or endearing. Nor is it loyalty, it's realism. If they were simply restoring PSN from backups, I'd have expected most services back in a couple of weeks. But since they're rebuilding from scratch, issuing a firmware update, securing/checking the security of their new systems and moving to a new data center all at the same time as conducting a large forensic audit of their systems, and participating in multiple ongoing criminal investigations into the attacks; I'm cutting them some slack because I know from my own experience that simply rebuilding a network from the ground up takes weeks if it's a big network. Rebuilding, re-engineering the security and authentication, moving physical location and complying with multiple teams of investigators and auditors stretches resources very thinly and I wouldn't want to hazard a guess at the time it would take.

That's not loyalty, that's realism and patience. Am I frustrated? Yes, of course I bloody am, but what does creating conspiracy theories gain anyone? I see no conspiracy, I simply see a major network, who's security was totally compromised and the service provider has decided to take the long and difficult route to provide as secure as possible a service on restoration; instead of the quicker approaches that result in less security.

It's not that they post info not seen elsewhere it's that it's not getting a re-constructed meaning. So many websites are taking the may 31 date, and making it seem like we won't have PSN back until that date. Which is not what Sony is saying at all. Anyways if you want up to date info straight from Sony you can follow these guys. They update as often even if there is no updates they'll let you know and they answer questions from followers via twitter as well.

well im on 15 hrs. plus,some might say i am addicted to psn, I say it keeps me from firing everyone that works for me, I am surrounded by a sea of idiots .I will be waiting as long as it takes for psn ,because as I see it there is only one gaming network for me,and not cause it is free it is because it is the best.As the old saying goes"the best things in life are free",somewhat.

But ah yes! inFamous is out soon! Now *that's* a highlight in an otherwise pretty darn dark times for PS3 owners.
And Sucker Punch has no IDEA of how clever it was of them NOT to include multiplayer in their game :D

Got to admit I'm not thrilled with the whole thing. I'm a PLUS member and also paid for alot of DLC that is not available for my games and I have several games that have been rendered useless. I also pre-ordered LA Noire, and if that's like Heavy Rain I won't be able to play it until the network is back online. This is a complete and total cluster f' of epic proportion. I don't blame SONY, but I can blame them for not having the resources to handle this from the get go....having to hire firms after the fact?? I'm not an IT person, but shouldn't they, given the nature of their business, had a high-level security team in place to handle just such an attack?

They didn't bring any one in "after the fact". They did bring outside sources in when they learned of the intrusion though. The reason why is for more man power. It had nothing to do with incompetence. Sony has the resources but considering it was a sophisticated attack why not get more hands on...?

There is another reason for independent third party teams involved in this. It became clear that it was a criminal attack very quickly, and any court action in the future will call into question evidence investigated by Sony. Third parties make the collection of evidence a much more reliable and defensible proposition.

Can you imagine the field day a criminal lawyer would have calling into question expert testimony and detailed technical evidence coming from Sony in relation to the attack on Sony? The third parties engaged provide a level if isolation from Sony that makes the evidence found safer and less subject to that kind of doubt or attack in court. Just like in a physical crime you don't want the evidence contaminated or tainted. Clean hands - so to speak.

@Darwin why would Heavy Rain not be able to be played without the PSN? I was JUST playing... Not to mention unless games are online only i.e. DC Universe I don't see Sony (at least this gen) making games that use the DRM that Capcom used on a few of their downloadable titles for disc games. I can understand why Capcom did as you have to buy them with an internet connection, but I still don't agree with that method whatsoever.

PSN, Sony online entertainment could have worked on a new system prior to the breach. They were warned that their security was outdated and failed to prepare a updated network. Upon the warning Sony had a chance to at least writing a new program in event of a data breach. this would have saved Sony a lot of money in the long run and time. as they say (Time is money)

I'm On About 10 HRS A Week Mostly Miss Video/Text Chating With My PS3 Bro's. Only Games I Play MP Really Is Uncharted 2 & Resident evil 5. Co/Op On Mercenaries Mode. Used To Play GTA IV MP But Not Much Anymore.

15+ for me more depends on how long im online for sometimes it's 8pm othertimes it's 10pm cos I want to do some SP stuff online.

Then I'll jump online with my clan/or buddies who are online.

Now online on the Xbox and cross party chat is brilliant, hopefully we get it on the PSN at some point in the future once it's back :)

I put 3-7 hours a week, which would be a normal week. Occasionally, I might play online more, but I don't have a regular online habit. The week before PSN went offline was 15+, though.

This does not include time connected to PSN when I'm not doing anything that uses that connection. I don't use auto-log-in and am therefore not usually connected when playing SP games, but sometimes I am.

Most of that 3-7 hours involves checking in on various areas in Home (Novus Prime, Aurora, the Community Theater). I used to do a weekly "SOCOM Saturday" session, but my clan mostly lost interest.
