Pachter: Portal 2 Console Sales Pass 1 Million In U.S.

If we had to pick a Game of the Year right now, it'd probably be Portal 2 (with Killzone 3 in second).

And that's why we're happy to see Valve's latest doing well on the sales charts. Well, the numbers aren't official just yet, but Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has revealed that the masterful puzzle title has sold about 4 million worldwide (excluding Steam sales). Approximately 1 million were boxed copies for consoles in the U.S. during the NPD's April period. Thus far, these console sales alone have generated around $60 million, which is good news, right? We're hoping more people continue to reward Valve for this game, which may lack in the replay department but offers an unparalleled single-player adventure that is both challenging and immensely rewarding. We'll see if the game can continue to garner sales - and new fans - in the months to come.

As for GotY...well, it's a long year. There are a whole lot of games coming. We can pretty much guarantee Portal 2 will at least be nominated, though.

i will be buying this and i would have if i had the money when it was $35 on amazon. the network being down has made it less appealing to get til it comes back up. though i may end up getting it this week if i have the money, network or not. cant wait to play portal 2.

here are the monthly console sales for na. source cvg.

360- 315,000
ps3- 210,000
wii- 215,000

i didn't pay attention to the portables but patcher did note that the 3ds is off to a slow start due to lack of compelling software titles.

Lack of compelling software titles? That's been the story of nIntendos life over the last 5 years =p

I guess "compelling" is a very relative term. Perhaps the audience Nintendo banked on has moved in to the next fad. That, or the 3DS Is uncharacteristically expensive for Nintendo. What parent would buy their kid a $250 handheld when theyve been conditioned to buying them stuff for less.

My copy should be in later this week- it was on sale for $34.99 at Amazon and I had $10 off from my Socom preorder....$24.99 for possible GotY? Sounds like a good deal to me! Gotta love Amazon.

Hey now, where does LBP2 stand in your GotY rankings? You scored it higher than KZ3. Still interested in this, but other games hold my interest more. Sorry, but maybe around Christmas time, or next year.

It's a gem of a game, this one! For the first time, I am tempted to buy the orange box so that I could play the original one.

As for GOTY, this game, along with LBP2 have been my best experiences this year so far...

People overstate the shortcomings of the PS3 version; it's totally playable.

Portal alone is worth the current price of The Orange Box.

Most likely LA Noire will steal the show when it comes out. It's a really exciting year for gamers, at least for PS3 gamers. I haven't seen Uncharted versus a Rockstar game before. My bets are on Uncharted. The multiplayer gameplay looks insane already, also I hear nothing but good things about the 3D.

I'm sure P2 is good, but how could it stack up against L.A. Noire, inFamous 2, and Uncharted 3? (And to a lesser extent Resistance 3?)

To some extent I'm not surprised that 360 got more sales so far because PS3 owners just have no previous reason to give Valve any money, but it pleases me to see that so many xboxers like a game that makes you think.

P2 is quaint. Played it and finished it over the weekend (though I still have to play the mp). Owing to the genre, things like story and environmental variety, and cutting edge visuals are not as critical. And for 35 bucks, it wasn't a bad deal at all. However, if it is your first run with the franchise, prepare to be pleasantly surprised, as there isn't anything quite like it this generation (with the obvious exception being the prequel).

I'm pretty sure Excelsior's numbers are hardware sales, not copies of Portal 2 for each system. I don't think there's a Wii version.

The game is just so *incredibly* charming, World. It's more than just puzzles, it's... Personality all over it.
To use another game, Uncharted: Bottom line that game too is a sort of a puzzle game, right? It's all in the eye of the beholder.

That being said, Portal is of course *more* of a puzzle game, but the puzzles themselves are also a lot more rewarding to solve, imo. And like being mentioned over and over, the voice acting in Portal really is *amazingly* good. Think exclusives - it's *that* good! ;)

Hell yeah. This game deserves these sales. Finally, good games selling well.

Btw, IMO GotY right now is a toss up between Portal 2 and DS2.

this is a VALVE game it should be up to at least 10M by now!
it should be illegal to own a ps3, PC or 360 and not own this gem!
same goes for the original!

Though I agree for the most part, the original Half-Life is the only Valve game so far that has surpasses the 10 million sold mark and still sells about a million copies a year. Not bad for a game that came out in '98. Think I got three copies of it here somewhere lol. Half-Life 2 should be approaching that number if it hasn't passed it by now. I know it was getting close last I looked.
