Sony: There Is No May 31 Deadline For PSN Restart

We've said several times that various reports about the PlayStation Network outage cannot be trusted. Now, Sony is saying the same thing.

Several days ago, Bloomberg reported a date for the full restart PSN services: May 31. This caused the Internet to erupt in a series of false assumptions and yet another round of Sony hatred, but not only were the words "full restart" and "unchanged" ignored, but there was another problem. The information wasn't accurate. According to Sony Sr. Director of Corporate Communications, Patrick Seybold, there is no such date in place. As of now, there is no new information pointing towards a delay and the confusion came in the Bloomberg interpretation of Sony spokesman Shigenori Yoshida's words.

It seems he said the company's goal was to "restore the service in May," which prompted Bloomberg to put a May 31 date in their headline. Hence, it was widely thought to be a deadline, and some erroneously began to believe nothing - not even online play - would be up and running until the last day of the month. While it's true that it's taking a little longer than initially estimated, any articles proclaiming May 31 to be of any real relevance are incorrect. As Seybold said:

"I agree. Trying to clean it all up now."

Gotta love headline writing for the sake of attention.

*sigh*

Has no one ever heard of an internal target date? You set goals and targets ahead of time and refine them as you go. Those are internal to the organization and do not relate to customer facing dates or goals. Even if there was an internal target of May 31st, it's simply a notional target for the teams working the problem. It's not a date for customers. If there was a date for customers, Seybold would have communicated it already.

What's so hard to understand about that?

All of that said, since we are now entering the fourth week of the outage. Gamers have show more than extraordinary patience, and we do deserve some more information. I think that Sony needs to move heaven and earth to give some solid estimates about actual restoration of online play. Even if they cannot be specific about the store and other commerce aspects of PSN, gamers need to know when online play will be restored.

I agree, I hate turning my Ps3 almost everyday on just to see if PSN is up and running up again. I kinda just gave up now. Hopefully we all keep our patience just a little longer because it is running short. I feel Sony will give us some answers in the next couple of days, I just feel it. Hang in there people!

BTW, I hope you find that link to deactivating a dead PS3 after PSN is up. I will greatly appreciate it!

@Killa,

Oh, I completely agree. I've kind of given up on turning the PS3 on and hoping for PSN to be available. I'm sticking to the PSP games I need to finish for right now. It's sad really, the knowledge that PSN is still down is like a thorn in my side. It actually detracts from my enjoyment of my games on the PS3. which is why my PSP is getting all the love.

Regarding the story in general....

This is an interesting quote from Seybold regarding the supposed third attack that CNet broke the news of and then claimed credit for averting; “There is no accuracy to that report. We’re focused on ensuring the security of the network before bringing the services back online.”

Some have suggested that Cnet has sufficient reason and links to Microsoft to have an inherent reason for bias against Sony, and that they are therefore spreading the usual FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt), which is a classic tactic used in the business world. I have to say that considering the nature of the rebuild Sony is undertaking, and the possible reasons for anti-Sony spin from that particular source, I have to wonder about their credibility with respect to anything Sony these days.

Either way, it seems that there is some kind of anarchic civil war erupting inside 'Anonymous' right now, and that some elements of that loose group of nut-jobs may have taken actions that go beyond the rather less illegal, but still annoying, DDOS protest attacks. Perhaps not a surprise since an attack of this nature, if it involved Anonymous in any way, directly or indirectly, is certain to earn Anonymous members the close attention of various law enforcement and security agencies. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch if you ask me.

Either way, this story has more twists than a plate of fusilli.

I blame Sony's lack of information on the internet gaming community. Certain websites are nothing but the National Enquirer or some type of experts in fishing.

Sure, the supporters of Sony deserve a date, but unfortunately if the date was not met, there would be internet backlash everywhere.

I am with Sony on this one in saying "soon".

@maxpontiac now that I think about it, even if Sony game us more information on when PSN will be restored, that doesn't change how long we will have to wait for it to be up.

Let's say today they told us it will be up in 2 days we will have to wait 2 days.

Let's say they didn't say in two days today, we will still have to wait two days.

FUD indeed. I don't even think MS is pushing people to do it. I think most of these sites are doing it willingly because that's just how biased they are. Especially CNET. PCWorld too. They have been writing some of the most misleading headlines I have ever seen as well as defending Anonymous with really no evidence to support their defense except what Anonymous tells them.

Killa and Max make a good point, but it's always a bad idea to let a deadline, even an approximate or perceived deadline, expire without first providing new information. Sony has done so a few times so far.

Control the message and you will control the expectations. Be silent and expect all to run amok.

Highlander,
Yeah, posted about the Anon hack last night on another thread, but it's all good that "what comes around goes around", so here it is again for all those that didn't see it....

Anon's servers get hacked by one of it's own

The hacker's hacked: Main Anonymous IRC servers invaded

War rages between competing factions within the hacker collective Anonymous after this weekend's drama-filled takeover of the main Anonymous IRC server network. That network, used by Anons to plan and conduct attacks, was taken over by one of its own, an IRC moderator known as "Ryan."

His attack has sparked a debate over the "leadership" of Anonymous.

I read that biker, isn't it fun to see the cockroaches scurrying around because one or two of their number were stupid enough to be seen when the kitchen light was turned on? Now the householder has called in the exterminators... and they're all doomed.

Kind of ironic that the hackers get hacked by hackers best described as their own compatriots, and then describe the hacked sites as compromised and dangerous.

Just like the cockroaches, I'm not sure that anonymous has a real leadership, so how they struggle about it I don't know. Perhaps the leadership is whoever is in control of the communication channel that the media recognize as 'Anonymous'?

Anonymous also remind me of the Locust. Locusts are not an issue when they appear in small numbers and do not swarm. In that state they are little more than annoyingly large grass-hoppers. However when Locusts swarm, they undergo physiological changes becoming much larger and more destructive. They develop rapacious appetites and move as a group across the land devouring all vegetation in their path. In small numbers, Locusts don't even count as a pest, in large numbers they can become a nuisance, and even transition into a swarm. When that happens, they are downright dangerous.

Anonymous is little more than a nuisance when they are in their usual mode of occasional civil disobedience, with low level DDOS attacks. Every now and again their numbers grow and they are behind some more dangerous stunts like hacking into a law firm's systems for information. In this case it seems that their numbers grew to such an extent that a 'swarm mentality' took hold. Even a high impact DDOS attack was insufficient. Some of the members of the swarm went further, and now that has happened, those affected are bringing in some flame throwers and pest control and the swarm doesn't like it. But, just like the Locust swarm, Anonymous has no real control over where it goes now. Parts of the swarm may be destroyed, parts may splinter off and disappear, and other parts may simply run out of things to eat and be stomped out.

I can't say I'm upset that they finally garnered some negative coverage in the media either.

Yeah, I love how they've suddenly imploded from the middle.

And with the FBI, Homeland Security & all those other 3-lettered agencies on the case, I'm sure it's scaring at least some of their loosly organized members away from hacking for a while, & into hiding where so they are no longer a factor.

Let's hope the LEO agency's can capture all of them involved in Sony's hack, & them put a serious smack-down on all their a$$es, and not just another that tap on the butt like geohotz got.

This is the one reason I stick to PSXextreme for my PS3 news. No stupid sensationalized news stories, a smart community who don't jump to conclusions based on assumptions and all news is displayed at either a neutral or PSXextreme community viewpoint.

And let's face it. Without Ben, Arnold and Highlander to set things straight, we would have to face those dumb masses on a daily basis when getting our gaming news.

As for this article, I think I speak for everyone when I say, "Well, DUUUHH!!!"

We knew from the beginning that PSN restoration wasn't going to come back all at once suddenly on the 31st. It was a steady roll out starting soon, geez guys, just be patient!! Sony have given us a tonne of great single player games, now is your best chance to explore them!!

Highlander, I do realize that there's no set date. But to announce one one week after the other, then have no comment for a set date. Rumors or reports that the system will be up and running at or by may 31, to a no set date is disturbing.

Not to mention at this point, I'd rather have everything on at once, instead of a few free games, friends list, and no ps store.

With all do respect, it must be huge pain in the butt for them, considering e3 is less than 30 days away. I know it's possible, but how can they have an e3 without the network being up? Aren't we up at 4 weeks now after this week, or is it 5?

Spike TV used to do something with it. Personally, I'd stick to G4 online or if PSN and Home is back, you can keep up with Sony's news via their E3 location in Home.

I believe that Joystiq usually has relatively live blogging of the main pressers, and several people here regularly post updated summaries of those events so you can keep up here also.

You can blame all that negative press on bad, immature and un-informed journalism. I get updates via twitter from PR guys at Sony throughout the day. I then see articles coming up from various websites completely changing the meaning of what they said. The only articles I read on the matter anymore are here at PSX. Otherwise I just follow Sony on twitter, that way I get my updates, and the I'm not strayed by what's really going on by a 3rd party.

I will admit a date would be nice, in tired of my friends asking me when it'll be back up and not having an answer. But withthat said of Sony doesn't know, or can't say, then so be it. "Bring the PSN back when you feel it is safe for me" is all I have to say to Sony.

Ok Im confused. sony said they planned to have everything up and running (everything means ps store as well) by the end of may.. now theyre saying there IS no deadline? But wouldnt "end of may" = deadline?

By them denying such a deadline are they implying we can forget about even playing games online at all this month? I would hope sony would be wise enough to have this whole problem over and done with by June 7th otherwise I can only imagine the media backlash theyll be getting at E3, they might as well forget about all their other e3 reveals and announcements because if PSN isnt up by then I can assure you thats gonna be the ONLY thing anyone cares to hear about.

I think the problem is that;

a) Sony says things like "we expect to have XYZ operational by DATE". It's expected but not certain. Most people ignore the word expected, many sites paraphrase such comments in their news and it becomes a deadline instead of an expectation.

b) Last Monday, while testing the new PSN, the teams who were continuing the investigation and audit of Sony's systems found evidence of the attack on SOE. At that time, whatever testing Sony had been doing on restoring PSN was stopped and suspended pending the further analysis of the SOE hack. Once that analysis was complete and any changes to the network rebuild plan were made, Sony had to implement whatever changes were needed and restart their testing.

In other words they were set back at least a week. Sony had expected to have basic PSN online play up last week, I'd expect that to happen this week sometimes. But, it's an expectation. Patrick Seybold has said the same thing in his official statements. If he could give a specific date, which I'm sure he'd love to do, he'd give it. We'll see what happens, but do not be surprised if PSN returns in the later part of the week.

youre correct Sony never said may 31st, they said "end of the month" end of teh month = may 31st AT THE LATEST, so even though sony never said may 31st theres nothing wrong with translating "end of the month" which they DID say to "may 31st" Also highlander as for you expecting it might be back up this week, dont count on it... Sony just posted yet another useless update on their blog today.. they said "at LEAST" a few more days.. now if they said "at MAX a few more days" then Id have hope fbut at "least" a few more days in sony speak means you might as well forget about playing games this week or even next week for that matter lol

I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong about something. Though I didn't say it would definitely be back, I said we should not be surprised if it comes back on by the end of this week, and also explained my reasoning behind that guess. But, yeah, I'm optimistic about PSN coming back this week, but if it doesn't you can be sure I'll openly acknowledge that.

Fane,

What I was saying under (b) is partly the simple facts - discovery of SOE hack, at about the same time as they're saying they plan a phased re-introduction. Said re-introduction never materializes and about a week later, Sony are still doing final testing. And partly educated guess-work based on my own experience. If I was in the process of rebuilding and final testing before restoring a network and found a previously undetected hack, I'd stop, analyze the attack to see if there is anything else I need to do to foil, and re-check everything I'd already done in light of any new information. Then I'd start testing over again. I remember reading a report about the situation where it was mentioned that Sony was in the testing stages of re-introducing PSN when the discovery occurred, and that everything was in flux while the newly discovered attack was investigated. If i can find it again I'll post a link for you.

Based on the apparent facts and apparent week long delay (based on Sony's own statements) and the prudent approach to dealing with re-building/re-launching a network after a hack, I wrote what I did. I think it's based as far as possible on the known facts and best practice in security. Of course there's a little speculation, because not all the facts are known outside Sony.

Oh, here's a quote from Patrick Seybold's May 6th statement that more or less says what I'm saying above minus the technical analysis;

"When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system."

The press conference was held on the Sunday. It was on Monday that the SOE attack was discovered. The statement by Seybold is addressing why PSN hasn't been restored even though Sony said it would be. So this is offered as part of the explanation of that delay. Then Seybold says that they are taking the opportunity to conduct *further* testing.

As I said, I'm offering a more technical analysis of the situation based on the public statements by Sony, and my knowledge of the process that you have to go through to recover your network after an attack. But it's all based in what Sony says, what is reported by credible sources and what actually happens.

the only thing that bugs me is they said some services would be restored last week but now that's been delayed becuase of soe attack. i don't even need an exact date. how about an update that would give a rough timeframe? it's kind of indefinite right now.

an update on the timeframe by sony would probably go a long way to reassuring gamers, and stop a lot of the speculation.

i've kind of imagined an update that goes like this... we've begun internal testing on psn, and if everything goes well you can expect some services to be restored within insert timeframe.

I would be a bad move to set a date or even a timeframe for that matter. Considering the sensitive and complex nature of rebuilding a network a deadline is the last thing anyone should ask for. I would never chose sooner than later at the expense of my security. I'd love for it to have been completed yesterday but I'm not going to go into convulsions because it hasn't.
My suggestion is that Sony should take ownership of the news that is out there. The updates they give are being twisted to tabloid levels. If I were Sony I would call out all the sites that continue to put a negative spin on this situation. Fact versus fiction. It is high time these so called game journalists and the sites that employ them learn some lessons.

Things to do while PSN is down:
Play a real game...basketball, baseball, football, hockey, etc.

Go to an arcade...for those of you who don't know what that is...it's a place where we older folk used to have to go to play REAL video games

Meet a girl...take her out for dinner ( maybe get lucky)

Workout...come on...you know you have been sitting in front of your T.V. all winter playing Black Ops gettin fat like a pig!

Clean your place...you know there are bags of Doritos and cans of Mountain Dew just piled up everywhere 'cus you've been playing online for hours and hours

Have a BBQ...invite REAL friends over and actually have a conversation other than "Dude, I totally noobed that guy off the map"

Tes, the world is backwards. I could write a 10 page essay on this topic just based on two events and how the media and Internet has reacted to them. I won't, but if ever I decide to do a masters I may try to do a piece on the impact of the internet news cycle on reporting and consumption of world evens by the public, and how the online distribution of news has heavily impacted the mainstream.

However, for now, the world is backwards. Instead of being allowed to be the victim - which they are - Sony faces a trial by media and Internet that puts them in the position of attacker, not victim. In a fair world people would acknowledge the simple fact that attacks like this happen and succeed every day, and therefore complimenting Sony on their -actually - quick and effective response to the attack. They would acknowledge that Sony's customers and Sony were all victims of this crime. We don't live in a fair world, and so Sony get's the treatment it's getting. What I find completely offensive is the way in which the majority of media outlets treat Sony with such hostility. Yet they reserve none of that hostility for the attackers, or for that matter for Anonymous, some of who's followers may have participated, and who's actions provided a window of opportunity.

The world is backwards.

Well, PSN has been down for 3 weeks, so I guess it's time to analyze the situation. My impression is that someone really was hoping for something like this to happen to Sony: I mean, reading most of the articles on various newspapers and websites, with false or inaccurate statements (like.. "77 millions of credit card numbers stolen" what a huge lie.. how can anyone even say such a thing without facing any consequence?), it's obvious that some of the more gullible users would have ended up switching off their PS3 and maybe buying an Xbox. Sony being in such a trouble, is a big gift to competitors. That said, i also feel that Sony hasn't done enough to prevent all this.. If a very well organized group of hackers wants to break into a system, no matter how "secure" it may be, it will.. The biggest proof of that is the whole "wikileaks" case. So, this means that Sony probably couldn't do much more than it did, to prevent the theft of certain data. At the same time, I think that there was some kind of lack in communication from Sony. It seems that they were not prepared to face the consequences of such an event, with news sites bombing the world with catastrophistic headlines. A lot of people will understand that the press is overestimating the problem, but some won't. And this is where Sony should step inside with more strenght and provide the customers with more detailed and possibly reassuring informations. All the rumours that have been circulating deserve a better answer. 3 weeks have passed, and i was hoping that by now we would have had a full report of what has really happened and what we should expect from the future of the platform, while now we're still in doubt about a lot of aspects.
As for the practical consequences involving PS3 users..
Of course, there are many things to do to kill time while the PSN is down, but these things can be done even with the PSN being up. Actually, for 1 year I've owned the PS3 barely using the network features (because of my bad internet connection). And i grew up with single player games, when the internet was just a dream.
Still, nowadays videogames rely more and more on their network features.. This is the age of MMORPGs and 21 days (and counting) of no internet are a big deal. Those who were hoping to spend part of their vacations playing their favourite games online have been out of luck. And their frustrations shouldn't be understimated, because some people make sacrifices to buy a gaming platform for their kids or for themselves, and they expect it to be fully efficient

A fair & accurate PSN timeline,

If you see the PSN is up, then it's up.
If you see the PSN is still down, then it's down.

So if you aren't Sony or one of the many developers who are hemorrhaging millions of dollars just because some self-righteous f*cking scumbag hacker's self-serving pipe-dream of entitlement, then just go do something offline.

HEY EVERYBODY, SOME GREAT NEWS FOR A CHANGE....

FYI, this is slightly off topic, but still related just due to the fact that this will certainly help to give Sony a much needed boost for their Playstation brand during this turbulant PSN down-time....

GameStop is issuing a "$100 off for a new PS3" coupon to PowerUp Reward card members

A couple of hours ago, I called GameStop's Customer Service Center's USA number(877-676-4263 8AM to 8PM CTS) to inquire about their new "$100 off a PS3 coupon" that some PowerUp Rewards customers have gotten, but I haven't received.

(See this link started by PSXMAX, in our own PSXE forum here:
http://www.psxextremeforums.com/gaming-discussion/9265-good-deals-gamers-10.html)

Anyway, according to the guy I spoke to at Gamestop, there's very good news for EVERYBODY who needs a PS3 or want's to add an additional PS3 to their home(and including myself, since I have a USPS smashed up PS3, with 127 PS3 games now sitting in my huge backlog that I still need to play)

Here's all the info that he just gave me on this $100 off coupon deal...................

#1. Everybody holding a PowerUp card "Will" be getting a $100 off a PS3 coupon(if they haven't already gotten one).

#2. He also stated that since millions & millions of these coupons are going out, GameStop is doing a phase-in of these coupons, a bit at a time, area by area.

#3. Everyone should have their own coupon by this Friday night (5/13/2011).

#4. Plus, since these coupons are still going out till 5/13, they WILL NOT expire till Sunday, 5/29/2011

(NOTE: As far as I know, this has been going on in Canada & the US, but there may be other areas involved too, I just don't know about that for sure).

I hope this news helps some of you out(and hopefully now I just might be able to juggle some bills around so I get back to gaming with a brand spanking new slim by the end of next week, using this $100 coupon & another $25 GS card that I got free, YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!)

(Saint's note: And if you don't have yours by the 14th, I'd definitely call & find out why

Hey, that is great news Biker. Any chance you might get a resolution to the USPS thing and be able to take advantage of that?

Highlander,
I'm not sure, as I was in my local PO to send all the claims paperwork in yesterday, but the guy at the counter said I may have a problem if the repair shop didn't alert their own PO of the damage right away.
So now I've got to contact the shop & hope that they did so.
Anyway, I did get them to send me a letterhead stating all the damage when they received it, so now it's basically a 3 month "wait & see" if I'll be awarded my claim.

As it stands now, once I get the $100 GS coupon, I'll try & juggle some bills to get a new slim, and if the USPS Ok's my claim, then I'll use that money to buy a "Refurbished 60GB" from GS(with 2-3 year extended warranty from Square Trade) to replace my Phat Princess.
That way, if one goes down, I'll still have a 2nd one as a back-up.
Plus I need both models for my collection.

So wish me some good luck, as I could really use some now since I've had this horrible series of bad luck ever since my PS3 first red-lighted back in March.

Normally, this time of the year, I'd recommend waiting until after E3 (or all of the big shows) before buying a new console, but $100 likely bests any deal that Sony could announce.

LMFAO. seen most of yall comments bout tha matter i been lol. man im glad i was referred 2 PSX in 07 this community TRILL layed back & 95% mature.

i finally decided 2 beat GT5 been at it these last couple of days & im at 48%. i been going threw the game differrently i dont buy no parts for my cars i just run stock with something thats equal to the car events & suprisingly AI was a challenge untill the proffesional events.... they brake to early. other then that still haven't purchased MK or any other game my $$$ vanishes when i get it.

PSN cant lie i miss it.... its like a oversized kid who is given ice cream but not even half way threw it gets snatched away & the kid looks like i know this MUH F%$# did not just take my ice cream..... lol visualising that setting seen it plenty times. really though im doing ight without PSN jus wish i had a better income to enjoy alot of campaigns i missed this gen of gaming.

Sony take yal time with the issue as much as i would appreciate PSN bk on i rather yal make sure its securely legit rather than it being bk on & the same or diff monkies hack again tryna make a point.

i like to look at life & things in life from differrent perspectives & i couldnt help but think wouldnt it be funny if Micro was behind this..... if they are my opinion thats a BI%$# move if so.

I am not the type of gamer that plays my ps3 all day every day but this is getting ridiculous. I do lots of other stuff, i went camping all last week but I'm getting real fed up with playstation and the corporate jerks feeding us playstation customers nothing but bull sh*it. Its damn near a month with no online game play. I enjoy comming home from work and playing online for a little bit befor going to bed to wake up and go to work all over again. Sony you are really fu*kin up

I've been reading PSXextreme for a while and I haven't posted on articles before today but I thought it was time to post here about the psn downtime.

If you're whinning about PSN being down still or complaining saying it should be back like many of you I see here and around the web are, just stop already b/c you're clueless.

Being someone who has worked in the field for years managing a very large network myself, though not near as large as PSN. I can tell you that the task Sony is faced with is beyond 99% of all PSN users comprehension.

To get a network the size of PSN backup and running is no easy task. Now if all they were doing was getting current servers back up and running due to a breech it would probably be back up by now, but maybe not.

The problem you have with PSN is not only are they implementing a hardware & software firewall among other security measures because they didn't have one in place to begin with!! (face palm) They are also migrating the servers to a new set of servers which they "supposedly" already had in the works prior to the attack.

They have to make sure everything works properly with all the new security measures in place. That you can download games, avatars, addons, movies, to the cloud, voice chat, video chat, etc. That transactions go through safely & securely, you can add PSN cards & codes for games/addons. Connecting to home, music services, hulu +, netflix etc.

They have to test that games can connect to PSN through the firewall correctly and gamers can connect to one another, voice chat etc. It's a lot more complicated than most of you can imagine.

Then what they cannot test is server load that is going hit the servers with a massive influx of people trying to connect all at once when the service is backup. Servers aren't built for your entire user base to be on at the same time.

People jump on and off and at any given time, even weekends or big game releases I would say the servers are no more than 60% capacity if the number is even that high.

You have probably 50million individual accounts or less b/c lots of the accounts are where people have more than one on a system I'm sure. If half of those sign on at once that is going to be a huge load on their servers.

If you've played World of Warcraft then you know about servers going down as a result of big patches or expansions due to everyone logging on at once. It causes problems, slow down, lag, people waiting in a que to login, crashes and it's only 12million subs, not 77million.

So don't expect a perfect PSN when it does come back up, it's going to take a while to iron out the bugs of new servers and to get everything working like it should be.

Now I like PSN, my PS3, PS2, PS1 & PSP but I don't believe they were already in the process of moving the servers. I think that is something they decided to do as a result of the attack as well as the servers being over 5yrs old now and probably in need of a major update.

When Microsoft for example migrated their servers to improve Xbox Live it took them many month's to do so. Just to give you an example of something comparable to PSN.

I could go on and on about this, but bottom line is, people aren't aware of the scope & scale of this project and the amount of time it takes to do something of this size.

I'm not defending Sony b/c their lack of communication to the community has been laughable and their PR department has done a horrific job just like it has in the past many times.

I wouldn't expect PSN back up anytime soon and if they do get it back up by the end of the month it would be a major suprise and a welcome one. Just don't be suprised if it goes right back down due to things they couldn't predict.
