Namco Confirms Soul Calibur V, Set For 2012 Release
Soul Calibur IV was loads of fun, but Namco Bandai has been mute on the subject of another installment.
All we've had since is Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny for the PSP, and the long-time fans have been begging for a new console entry. Well, it's coming: Soul Calibur V will be headed to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 some time next year; it was revealed by Project Soul producer Hisaharu Tago at Namco's annual Level Up event. They're calling this fifth iteration a "true sequel" complete with new characters and a "generational shift." Namco also revealed a few other titles, including a currently untitled Dragon Ball Z game for the PS3 and 360 and Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Impact for PSP. But right now, I'm most excited for SCV; I'm not a big fighting fan, but I've always been able to get into the accessible, fluid style of this franchise.
Pretty sure I did everything in the Dreamcast original. Gotta love Ivy. More info on SCV when it becomes available.

Hang on, are we talking about the same game? You could get through a ridiculous amount of the game simply spamming the attack buttons. Talk about a button masher. Regarding the Star Wars characters, the speed of the Apprentice was ridiculous. There wasn't really sufficient time to recognize his moves and react, it was a game of pure chance whether you managed to hit your attack button in the brief window before his next attack began. Don't even get me started on Yoda and his immunity to throw attacks.
I found the game really very frustrating and the critical finishes were near impossible to pull off, so much so that I simply didn't bother trying because the frustration level was too bloody high.
The tower was alright, but as you neared the top, the game's cheating increased dramatically to the point where it's executing attacks and combos faster than a human can and reacting faster than a human can. It often felt like the game was essentially reading the player's mind by reading the controller input. It would react so quickly, predicting the player's action and reacting to it before the on screen character has even started the actual move. The only way to explain that in my mind is that the game's AI really was reading the controller input and reacting instantly instead of waiting for the move to start.
Either way, there was too much broken in the game foe my preference. Even so it had it's plus points in create a Soul, the arcade mode and online play. But when I compare it feature for feature I miss the more immersive style of SC3 where you level your character class, earn gold to buy items from the in-game shop-keepers and of course play as many battles as possible to unlock all the unlockables. Even though lots of people didn't really like the Chronicles of the Sword, as far as I am concerned it beats the living crap out of the tower of cheat in SC4. Still SC4 is a beautiful game.
Perhaps SC5 can bring us the best of both worlds?

The only thing is I don't like the sound of a generational shift, that had better not mean pandering to the FPS crowd in some fashion. I also hope that this generational shift doesn't mean leaving behind all the characters we've come to know and dare I say...love? I mean, Soul Calibur without Sophitia, Xinghua, Ivy, Seong Mina, or Taki? That would be bad, and would kill a lot of gamer's desire to get the game. Perhaps it's just a new game mode or something?
The True Sequel bit is interesting. I hope it means that they will return to some of the elements from Soul Calibur 3 which was a much deeper game and had more content than SC4 by a country mile. SC4 brought HD graphics and online, but little else. If we can have the HD graphics and online with the story and depth of SC3, and perhaps even the pseudo RPG elements too? That would be great!
Oh yeah, I nearly forgot. Can we please re-instate KOS-MOS and her Type X armor? She was a hidden bonus character in SC3, and was reported to be included in SC4, but in the end, she was no where to be found. I mean seriously, if you're going to own the rights to a beautiful blue haired red eyed combat android who's more fun to watch than beach volleyball, why not at least include her as a hidden guest character?

Gamsutra is carrying a report that Soul Calibur 5 will be set 17 years *after* Soul Calibur 4.
I'm telling Namco right now, if they do away with the main characters of the game by aging them out of the game, they may as well age me out of the audience for their game.

Looking at the older Sigfried, older characters might not be a bad thing...
A am curious to know about Sophitia's daughter Pyrrha though, because in SCIV she couldn't live without Soul Edge
