Sony Announces Phased Restoration Of PlayStation Network

We never see press releases on a Saturday night. ...but when Sony said they were working around the clock, they probably meant it.

Today, Sony Corporation and Sony Computer Entertainment have announced that Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI) will begin a phased restoration by region of PlayStation Network and Qriocity Services. This will begin in the Americas, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East.

The first phase of the restoration will include the following:

  • Sign-in for PlayStation®Network and Qriocity services, including the resetting of passwords
  • Restoration of online game-play across PS3 and PSP
  • Playback rental video content, if within rental period, of PlayStation Network Video Delivery Service on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
  • Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity, for current subscribers, on PS3 and PC
  • Access to 3rd party services such as Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and MLB.tv
  • 'Friends' category on PS3, including Friends List, Chat Functionality, Trophy Comparison, etc
  • PlayStation Home

Sony has also noted increased security measures "that strengthen safeguards against unauthorized activity, and provide consumers with greater protection of their personal information." This includes "considerable enhancements to the data security," more software monitoring and penetration and vulnerability testing, and higher levels of encryption and additional firewalls. Said Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President of Sony Corporation:

"I'd like to send my sincere regret for the inconvenience this incident has caused you, and want to thank you all for the kind patience you've shown as we worked through the restoration process. I can't thank you enough for your patience and support during this time. We know even the most loyal customers have been frustrated by this process and are anxious to use their Sony products and services again. We are taking aggressive action at all levels to address the concerns that were raised by this incident, and are making consumer data protection a full-time, company wide commitment."

Please view Hirai's full announcement at the PlayStation Blog.

As another step, Fumiaki Sakai, president of Sony Global Solutions, Inc., has been appointed acting Chief Information Security Officer of SNEI. He will "work to further reinforce overall information security across the company's network infrastructure." As for the return of the Network, Hirai wanted to stress they they "did not rush" to bring it back; they aggressively tested the enhanced security measures beforehand. Finished Hirai:

"We want to assure our customers that their personal information is being protected with some of the best security technologies available today, so that everyone can feel comfortable enjoying all that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer."

Phased restoration will be announced for Japan and other Asian countries "in due course. Overall, Sony expects to have all services fully restored by the end of May 2011.

104 trophies synced. It's so awesome to have it back. I probably won't play online games for awhile. But knowing I can and knowing my trophy data is current is such a peace of mind. I do wonder if any of you know whether or not we'll be able to redeem codes (Motorstorm Apocalypse came with some codes I'd like to input) or if that will not become available until the store is back up and running. Any ideas? When I go to account management right now it says "under maintenance".
Also I'd like to once again thank PSXextreme for being the only site I could go to without having my blood pressure rise and for being a safe haven from the rest of the crazy internet during this whole ordeal. Thank you to the staff and the members for being awesome.
Enjoy everyone!

I don't believe there will be any code redemption's until the PSN store is fully up, whenever that will be up(my PS3's now broken, so I can't check)

Just remember to "NOT" all jump in at once!

You have to remember that there's also millions of others that will be trying to get on too, so we really don't want to be rushing the site & causing it to go bonkers, or any other unneeded problems.

It's hard to keep a 2.55 k/d ratio with a terrible connection, or play anything well online at all for that matter. See you online soon, maybe we can kick around some SSF4 if you still have it.

I guess it hasn't got back online in the midwest just yet,I'm just taking my time collecting trophies and trying to get my first plat in Batman AA. I hope it kicks in tomorrow cuz I'm hoping to get MLB 11 the show as a birthday gift and I don't want to try updating the rosters myself.

I get the PSN being down for 3 weeks but seeing people talking that crazy crap of switching to the 360 is nuts to me. If 360 fans can replace one 360 after another when they burn out people can hold out playing online for 3 weeks.

A lot of you youngun's might have never heard it, but this song was used way back when for F.D.R.'s Presidency.

And "today" it still rings true for our PSN relaunch too......

"Happy Days Are Here Again"

So long sad times
Go long bad times
We are rid of you at last

Howdy gay times
Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again

Altogether shout it now
There's no one
Who can doubt it now
So let's tell the world about it now
Happy days are here again

Your cares and troubles are gone
There'll be no more from now on
From now on ...

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So, Let's sing a song of cheer again

Happy times
Happy nights
Happy days
Are here again!
***************

Yup, that about sums it up!

Yeah, even with me being 58, that song still precedes my birth by over 22 years.

BTW, the song is still popular today, but it now has an updated, more faster modern beat.

In the US, you will "always" hear the updated version being played by almost every winning political candidate, either at their party headquarters, &/or during their celebration party after the final votes have been tallied & he/she's been declared the winner.

Anyway, Here's Charles King old recording of it way back when, in 1930.

Thanks Sony for taking the time to do this right. As much trouble as it has been for them with all the public pain and financial damage, I feel like they have performed admirably in a very difficult situation. Certainly they will be aware that there were things that they could have done differently, it's a learning process. There really isn't a playbook for this sort of thing. Or rather, there wasn't until Sony wrote it.

Thanks for being patient and keeping it classy PSXers.

Well that is good news for geing back up but a week too late for me. My PS3 was crashing and finally my HDD crashed and I lost my copy protected game saves and my recently earned trophies. I tried restoring my system and no luck. I waited and waited for the system to be back up in order to back up my saves and sync my trophies.

The same day my PS3 crashed, I received my sons new PS3 system. I am still gaming and waiting for my replacement HDD.

Welcome back online PS3!

How much money do you think they were losing US vs Aus? Even though the store isn't back up I don't think they wanted to risk anymore people trading their systems in. Other than the obvious fact that they also wanted to restore service as quickly as possible to everyone safely. At least you know it's coming. :)

Try using the forgotten password option, it will email you at your registered email address. Alternately contact Sony Customer service - though you may need to be patient with them, I suspect that they are a tad overwhelmed right now. The final thing you might try is going to the Qriocity main web site, you may be able to reset your password there - again using the email address registered to your PSN ID.
