Sony Announces Phased Restoration Of PlayStation Network
We never see press releases on a Saturday night. ...but when Sony said they were working around the clock, they probably meant it.
Today, Sony Corporation and Sony Computer Entertainment have announced that Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI) will begin a phased restoration by region of PlayStation Network and Qriocity Services. This will begin in the Americas, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East.
The first phase of the restoration will include the following:
- Sign-in for PlayStation®Network and Qriocity services, including the resetting of passwords
- Restoration of online game-play across PS3 and PSP
- Playback rental video content, if within rental period, of PlayStation Network Video Delivery Service on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
- Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity, for current subscribers, on PS3 and PC
- Access to 3rd party services such as Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and MLB.tv
- 'Friends' category on PS3, including Friends List, Chat Functionality, Trophy Comparison, etc
- PlayStation Home
Sony has also noted increased security measures "that strengthen safeguards against unauthorized activity, and provide consumers with greater protection of their personal information." This includes "considerable enhancements to the data security," more software monitoring and penetration and vulnerability testing, and higher levels of encryption and additional firewalls. Said Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President of Sony Corporation:
"I'd like to send my sincere regret for the inconvenience this incident has caused you, and want to thank you all for the kind patience you've shown as we worked through the restoration process. I can't thank you enough for your patience and support during this time. We know even the most loyal customers have been frustrated by this process and are anxious to use their Sony products and services again. We are taking aggressive action at all levels to address the concerns that were raised by this incident, and are making consumer data protection a full-time, company wide commitment."
Please view Hirai's full announcement at the PlayStation Blog.
As another step, Fumiaki Sakai, president of Sony Global Solutions, Inc., has been appointed acting Chief Information Security Officer of SNEI. He will "work to further reinforce overall information security across the company's network infrastructure." As for the return of the Network, Hirai wanted to stress they they "did not rush" to bring it back; they aggressively tested the enhanced security measures beforehand. Finished Hirai:
"We want to assure our customers that their personal information is being protected with some of the best security technologies available today, so that everyone can feel comfortable enjoying all that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer."
Phased restoration will be announced for Japan and other Asian countries "in due course. Overall, Sony expects to have all services fully restored by the end of May 2011.

Also I'd like to once again thank PSXextreme for being the only site I could go to without having my blood pressure rise and for being a safe haven from the rest of the crazy internet during this whole ordeal. Thank you to the staff and the members for being awesome.
Enjoy everyone!

It's hard to keep a 2.55 k/d ratio with a terrible connection, or play anything well online at all for that matter. See you online soon, maybe we can kick around some SSF4 if you still have it.

Ha, funny you should mention that, cause today I just picked up a couple of those "Shhh...don't tell anyone" games myself....
"Disney presents Tigger's Honey Hunt"
and
"Tiny Toons Adventures: Plucky's Big Adventure"
But, I needed them to help fill some gaps in my PS1 collection.

I get the PSN being down for 3 weeks but seeing people talking that crazy crap of switching to the 360 is nuts to me. If 360 fans can replace one 360 after another when they burn out people can hold out playing online for 3 weeks.

And "today" it still rings true for our PSN relaunch too......
"Happy Days Are Here Again"
So long sad times
Go long bad times
We are rid of you at last
Howdy gay times
Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past
Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again
Altogether shout it now
There's no one
Who can doubt it now
So let's tell the world about it now
Happy days are here again
Your cares and troubles are gone
There'll be no more from now on
From now on ...
Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So, Let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy times
Happy nights
Happy days
Are here again!
***************
Yup, that about sums it up!

BTW, the song is still popular today, but it now has an updated, more faster modern beat.
In the US, you will "always" hear the updated version being played by almost every winning political candidate, either at their party headquarters, &/or during their celebration party after the final votes have been tallied & he/she's been declared the winner.
Anyway, Here's Charles King old recording of it way back when, in 1930.

Thanks Sony for taking the time to do this right. As much trouble as it has been for them with all the public pain and financial damage, I feel like they have performed admirably in a very difficult situation. Certainly they will be aware that there were things that they could have done differently, it's a learning process. There really isn't a playbook for this sort of thing. Or rather, there wasn't until Sony wrote it.
Thanks for being patient and keeping it classy PSXers.
