PSXE Poll Update: Sony Fans Log Plenty Of PSN Hours

Our poll two weeks ago found that the vast majority of Sony followers were willing to stick with the PlayStation Network, despite the recent downtime.

But what do those results matter if we have a readership that doesn't really utilize the Network's services all that often? Hence, the second poll: and as it turns out, the majority of gamers are on the Network at least 3 hours per week, and more than 1/3 say they spend over 15 hours - i.e., the brunt of their entertainment week - on the PSN. Therefore, it really does seem as if the fans stuck by Sony through all of this, and the traffic spike after the Network returned in the past 24 hours is even more proof of their loyalty. Of course, one could make the argument that because it's free, it's easy to stick around. Yeah, well, consumers were plenty ticked off but it seems cooler heads prevailed.

This week, it's back to full-on gaming, and just in time, too. One of the most anticipated titles of the year lands on Tuesday: Rockstar's L.A. Noire. We can't wait to get started; how about you? Have you been anxiously awaiting it's arrival? Are you on the fence? Waiting for reviews? Just don't care at all? Let us know.

FWIW I find it tougher to read comments which don't follow grammatical standards, so I tend to gloss over them. If you want to be heard, it might be best to avoid capitalizing every word.

I wanted to mention it earlier, but you've been a welcome addition and I didn't want to be dickish.

This in from the PS blog....

Update on Service Restoration Rollout

Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

We’re currently experiencing an extremely heavy load of password resets, and so we recently had to turn off services for approximately 30 minutes to clear the queue.

As such, a large number of people are attempting to change their passwords at the same time, it’s taking longer than expected for all those emails to clear all of the ISPs.

If you’ve requested your password reset, please give it a bit of time to reach your email. Thanks for your patience as we work to get everyone back online.

@Underdog,

Yep. It seems that in most cases as long as you've activated the PS3 on your PSN account and downloaded something from the Store at some point on that system, you can. It doesn't have to be the very first PS3 you ever used.

I was able to change my main (Can) account's password via PS3, but had to use the e-mail method for my alternate (UK) account, for no reason that I can see. I created both accounts on the same system, in both cases before it YLOD'd and was sent for repair.

I'm waiting for the review, it's a new IP, new game mechanics, I just have doubts.

I'm hoping for a solid 9.2 average review score, but I just have a feeling that people are going to be surprised and it's going to fall flat and end up with an average 8.

Not that 8 is bad, but I have money set aside for Infamous 2 and White Knight 2, so anything else will have to prove itself first.

PSXers in Japan and Asia may be in for a slightly longer wait for PSN to return. The Japanese government apparently wants further assurances about security. I'm sure that other Japanese companies operating entertainment networks will be utterly entertained by this governmental interference since it will no doubt visit them next. You have to wonder what kind of assurances Sony is supposed to give considering that no one really knows ahead of time how a hack will happen, or when.

Either way, here's the story;

The servers are getting hammered by password reset requests, apparently the emails resulting from the resets are taking time to clear because some ISPs are not processing them quickly. So they queue up on the server and Sony has had to take the system down for short periods to allow the queue to clear. It's clearing gradually though.

so what use is a expired link?
they know some instances have taken 30 hours, so they put a limit of 24?

This was to be expected... maybe Sony should have turned PSN on over a period of a week, 2 states per day... rather do it slowly and not have anymore issues...

It just ends up harming Sony's image more, which is what is not wanted. All this remains in the customers mind... long term effect rather than short term, especially when it comes to purchasing the next PlayStation...

Sigh... I hope it all goes well... I am still not able to get onto PSN!

Qubex, I think Sony wanted the entire network back up for online play as soon as possible. dragging this out over days or weeks would, I think, have made things worse. It's bad enough that Japan's regulators are currently blocking the restoration in Japan.

The password reset traffic will gently fade and the short outages needed to clear the backlog will be forgotten.

Sony did the right thing. I havnt had any issues everyone I know hasn't. On twitter people from Europe were getting pretty irate that the PSN restoration went smoothly in the US, yet they hadn't gotten it up their yet. Prolonging it would make things worse. The types of problems people are having because of heavy traffic is the types of issues you get with every CoD game at launch. This is nothing big at all.

im lucky if i put in a hour a week PSN time.
only use it for downloading demos, or sometimes downloading PSN games.
i get enough abuse at work then to sign on and have a 8 year old screaming in my ear and crappy RMB playing so loud my windows feel like there going to break, lord knows how his feel!

speaking of LA Noire it got pushed forward a day!
woot!
knew this would happen, games NEVER release on fridays!
in fact i dont think a game has released on a friday this gen, last game that was suppose to release on friday was ninja gaiden sigma but then that ended up being pushed forward to thursday too.
sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cant wait to play LA Noire, after reading the GI review of it im even more excited to play it!

one habit thats been going on allot lately that i hope stops is reviews.
whats going on?
games use to get reviews weeks before release, hell i remember reading the enter the matrix review a good 6 weeks before release!
WTFs happened?
pretty much every single game released this year has had its review held back till the week of release, if not the day of release.
what gives?
are publishers that worried crappy reviews will hurt there sales?
well simple solution folks, dont make crappy games!

allot of people rely on reviews to base there opinion on whether they should buy it or not.
kinda hard to do that if the reviews come out on release date, especially here if you want to pick up a game you pretty much have to preorder it!
even with the 6+ stores around me, if i dont preorder a game good luck finding it within a month of release!
hell i was lucky to get BRINK, i went in on release day JB were sold out, EB were sold out, GAME were sold out, Kmart were sold out, target were sold out, bigW were sold out!
i was lucky though, i went back to EB to grab fallout NV instead and the manager told me a customer came in and did not want his preorder of brink so i could purchase it.
tis why i make sure i preorder my games at least 2 weeks in advance because if i dont good luck finding them!

not many people buy them thats why they sell out so quickly.
u read the latest GI yet?
theres a article in there about the R18.
if its not passed at next months SAG, apparently there going to do it by state.
only bad thing is if they do it by state they have the power to remove the MA 15+ rating in there state.
so everything MA will become R,totally stupid!
imagine how much this is going to hurt game sales!
they dont exactly sell well as it is, but restricting what 80% of the sales to 18 and over?
not exactly a brilliant idea to boost the economy!

Oh that's stupidity. The ACB is a country wide standard, so how can they get away with restricting it to each state? More importantly, why do away with the MA rating? It's not as though EVERY game is deserving of an R18+ restriction. It can be argued that many are, but most of what's in my collection doesn't come close to touching the R rated films I have (Predator collection and A Clockwork Orange). Politicians... There's scarcely a brain cell among them.

not all deserve a R rating, bug most do.
IMO assassins creed, GOW, GTA,MK, ect,ect are not suitable for 15.
a better idea would be to remove the M rating, and just have g, pg, ma, and r.
dont need m, bump pg up to where m use to be.
restricting games to a m or a r rating is just stupid!
oh well, if thats what it takes to get a r18 rating in, then so be it!
stupid thing is if they dont pass it at the SAG, then its up to each states attorney general to account it.
so QLD may not get it, but SA could, but NSW does not.
its just stupid, what one state has, all states should have!
this is just dividing up the country.

I think a big factor as to why people are still willing to stick with Sony is because they have a track record of supplying us with quality products.

Plus they are a company that has shown us that even when they are down, they will what ever it takes to build back up. ei all do the critism in the start of this gaming gen and 360 getting a head start. Also this whole hacker issue with their online services. They have demonstrated precisely what a stand up type business should be doing to let their customers know they are a business that you can put your faith in.

Barring terrible reviews, I'll be getting it eventually, but I almost never buy games at release (just Rock Band 2/3 and Uncharted 2 so far this generation).

Too much backlog to need new games on day one.

Do want muchly though.

ahhh... PSN is back on & suprisingly i used it but not as much time before it was cut off. it feels GREAT now i no longer have to hear folks complaining over the folks who was jus saying.

i hardlynotice the polls on this website i missed plenty previous 1z i will make effort to participate in them more. jus did my vote for Noire. it looks incredible & promising looks like a combination of Heavy Rain & GTA.

Have you played any of the early PS3 exclusives? Like Resistance Fall of Man, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, MGS4? You know, the classics. Anyone of those games are must haves, can't imagine missing out on these ones.

InFamous was great fun, can't wait for 2. Also there is Valkyria Chronicles, as you can see by my pic, I love that game. Also it goes without saying that Killzone2 is a must, could not believe my eyes when I first started playing that game, but the gameplay is also amazing, very different in feel from other FPS. That's all I can think of right now, if anything else pops up in my head will let you know.
Happy gaming!

I bought the "old" games when I first got my PS3 last year as well. I bought Uncharted 1 and 2, inFamous, Killzone 2, GoW collection/GoW 3 (these aren't really "old" games though).

Me too, been on an "old games" buying kick myself the last 6 months.

Matter of fact, I've been able to pick up 23 Intellivision games & the voice attachment so far

Oh snap,........ here I thought you said "OLD" games

Now that Sony has given into our demands and restored the network, we can release the hostages.

No, we should not release the hostages. They are a threat. ;)

My wife saw the commercial for LA Noir last week when we were watching some tv together.

She asked me to get it... I just stared at her... she is anything BUT a gamer. She said, "What? It looks like it might be fun like Heavy Rain!" I half-jokingly responded by saying, "I've never loved you more than I find myself loving you right now."

Obviously, I'm getting it Day 1 now. lol

LA Noire just isn't my thing. Will probably be a great game though.

Considering the fact that I love noir to a possibly disturbing amount I have little to no interest in this game. I don't know why but nothing about it reaches out to me. Hopefully they will give the noir genre its due respect and glory and I can save up for inFamous 2.
