Ridge Racer Unbounded Sneak Peek: Driving And Destruction

A new Ridge Racer is in the works, and here's a sneak peek at the action.

Bugbear and Namco are teaming up to deliver Ridge Racer Unbounded, which marks the return of the long-running and ultra-popular racing franchise. This time around, the developers are seeking to greatly increase the size and scope of the game, and as they say in the video, it's all about "driving, destruction and domination." Check it out:

Their goal is to satisfy veteran fans of the series and earn new fans...to do that, we'll need a damn fun game. We'll have to see more of this racer in action before passing further judgment but for the time being, we just like to say, "a new RR is coming!"

The first multi-plat Ridge Racer? Hmm...

Sort of. I mean the franchise has been on several platforms. Nintendo, Sony, MS and even Apple iPhone.

It's not often to have a multi-plat for a single title. R Racing was one, but RR6 and RR7 are essentially the same game. RR7 was the more robust and refined version of the same game.

It's games like this that reinforce in my mind that some devs really need to just make something new.

Alienage, they are doing something new, right now, with Unbounded.
This isn't RR8, it's some sort of off-shoot title in the RR universe, not dissimilar from all of EA's various NFS games.

Why not just give it a different title if it's so different. I know that branding can help with market penetration, but it runs the risk of alienating core fans. Like Operation Raccoon City, DmC or even the FF spin-offs.

Exactly. Devs can just create a new series or go dig a decade-old one out of its grave. To take Ridge Racer, a series with seven installments and multiple spin-offs, and turn it into this is disgusting.

What the hell does Unbounded mean?

But this is looking nice. I've never played a Ridge Racer game before, and this reminds me of Burnout with destructible environments, based on what I've seen here. Could be good, 'cos Namco is hitting those heights recently.
Peace.

Oh, you know. Unbounded as in no boundaries, go anywhere, do anything, drive through buildings, flip your car, eat nachos, and feel free at last.

Ha. But isn't the 'ed' suffix unnecessary in this context?

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I'm slightly leery of this game. I saw 360 dev kits in that video, but no PS3s. Kind of makes me fear that it'll be a port.

Theyre also "unbound" by the rules of writing. Maybe they're going for a zany, stand out vibe. But they need to get with the times,it's cool these days to make things in LEET. It should read: Unbound3d

Oooooh, modern and catchy =p

This is sort of reminding me of a Burnout game...set in a City....Paradise City...

poor kaz is going to be so disappointed!
oh well, i think its in there best interest to ditch the sim and go to a more arcade street racer.
no one is ever going to do a better sim then PD, ridge racer was always in its shadow, so its time to move on onto newer ground.
since were not getting a new retail burnout game for a while, this will be the perfect substitute!

Ridge Racer in GTs shadow? Not so much. The original PS3 Ridge racer runs in 1080 modes. It's a great game that really doesn;t get the love it deserves - such is the price of being released so early in the PS3 lifecycle. Come to think of it, if Namco would re-release it as a PSN game for $19.99, and give it a light content update, it would sell like hotcakes.

it is, both are sim racers and ridge racer will never be as good as GT so whats the point in trying?
they will sell allot more copies going for a arcade racer, especially a highly destructive one like this.
theres no game out there that looks like this, slightly burnout but that does not have destructible environments like this does.
bringing something fresh and new to a old well worn genre.

I really liked the arcade over the top drifting driving style of previous Ridge titles so I hope that hasn't changed.

Please don't try to make Burnout as we already have that. It's called BURNOUT.

Keep RR true to what have always been the core mechanics.
