PSN "Welcome Back" Program: Free Games, Movies, Music

When Sony announced the phased restoration of the PlayStation Network, they said we can expect details of the "welcome back" program in due time. That information is now at the PlayStation Blog; this applies to North American PSN customers, who can take advantage "shortly after" Sony has fully restored the service.

First, all PSN customers can select two PS3 games from the following list; they'll be available for 30 days after the Store has been resurrected:

  • Dead Nation
  • inFAMOUS
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Super Stardust HD
  • Wipeout HD + Fury

Those are some great titles right there. For PSP owners, they can download two free games from this list (also for 30 days after the Store is back):

  • LittleBigPlanet (PSP)
  • ModNation Racers
  • Pursuit Force
  • Killzone Liberation

Oh, but it doesn't end there.

-- A selection of “On Us” rental movie titles will be available to PlayStation Network customers over one weekend, where Video Service is available. Those titles will be announced soon.

-- 30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non PlayStation Plus subscribers.

-- Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive an additional 60 days of free subscription.

-- Existing Music Unlimited Premium Trial subscription members will receive an additional 30 days of free premium subscription.

-- Additional 30 days + time lost for existing members of Music Unlimited Premium/Basic subscription free of charge for existing Premium/Basic members.

-- To welcome users Home, PlayStation Home will be offering 100 free virtual items. Additional free content will be released soon, including the next addition to the Home Mansion personal space, and Ooblag’s Alien Casino, an exclusive game.

Okay, so some users might remain bitter. But this isn't a bad program, is it?

Also if you own a PS3 and a PSP you get 2 games from each list. They answered the question on the EU blog.

Cool I was about to bring that up.

This sucks because I literally just bought inFamous to play while the network was down and now they're offering it for free

Nice.

If I didn't already have Infamous I'd be there. Looks like I'll be going after LBP on both platforms and/or ModNation racers on PSP.

I'll be interested in the home stuff too, I'm a bit of a virtual hoarder...

I already have infamous & dead nation too. I always wanted a little big planet game too but I've been on a budget lately so this is great. I'll probably end up downloading that & super stardust since it has local co-op. I only get psn games that have co-op.

Sony could've very easily just had you pick 1 or 2 games from a lot of 5 PSN titles. The fact that they threw in 2 full retail games is really impressive. Kudos Sony, I wasn't going anywhere because of this cyber attack but you really did go above and beyond with this "Welcome Back" program. Three weeks of down time for the PSN wasn't worth much more than a free month of PS Plus, in my opinion. Thank you Sony/Anoyomous/GeoHotz!!! (that's a joke, people)

I'll most likely get Wipeout HD as I've always wanted to download it, but was always scared off by the $20 price tag. Since I already own inFAMOUS I think the other game I'll download is LBP. Never played it or the sequel, and even though it doesn't look like my "type" of game, I can't ignore all the praise and accolades it received.

Dan0mite,

I haven't gone over to the PS Blog as of yet, but I'm thinking that those 30 days just mean that you'll have 30 days to pick & download them for free once they're up.

And that they'll no longer be available as "free" games, after that 30 day period.

Wow, that's a very nice "welcome back" package! Not to mention you get two free games for both your PS3 and PSP, and you'll keep them forever! And those multimedia rentals are pretty good as well, though I cannot avail of them since I am not in the United States.

Those who doesn't have Infamous yet ought to take advantage of this one. It's also pretty clever of Sony to offer it for free, since the second game is just around the corner.

I'm not sure yet as to what I'll be getting, but at the moment I might get Dead Nation and Wipeout HD + Fury for the PS3, and Killzone Liberation and ModNation Racers (or maybe Pursuit Force) for the PSP.

Anyway, I'm glad that the PSN is finally back (just waiting for the Store to be up as well). All these incentives are just cherries on top. Thanks Sony!

I figured they'd offer maybe a regular PSN title and maybe a mini or two which I would have been fine with. I think this is really awesome of them and the developers.

I already have the Platinum on Infamous but I'll still download that and then Dead Nation as I have LBP and Super Stardust HD. Wipeout isn't something I'm interested in.

For the PSP side I'm going for LBP and Modnation Racers. I have Killzone Liberation and I'm not sure what Pursuit Force is but I'll probably still go with my first picks.

Not really into the free movies since I already have Netflix so I can watch whatever movies they list whenever I feel like it already. Don't use Home so that's pointless as well. I Was curious about that. A lot of people feel like being a loyal fan and owning them all are getting left out. So I'm curious as to how they will respond to that. The 5 games listed are incredible games and more than worth it, but that's more the reason people would own all them already. So I'm curious to see what happens. I though they would give us not digital money but a free transaction of some sort to purchase something.

Either way I'm getting dead nation and wipeout!

Well, the thing is if you look at the spread of genre, these games cover a very wide range of gamer. None of the games sold in the numbers that something like MW2 or Black Ops sell, so there's a good chance that a lot of gamers, the majority in fact, don't have these games. Certainly few gamers will already have them all.

But, if you do, then now you can get them as downloadable, so they will be on the HDD instead of you having to put the disc in. Not to mention the PSP games and the free 30 days of Plus (60 for Plus subscribers) and finally a yard sale worth of Home items. I'm sure many will already have lots of them, and some won't like all of them.

I guess that the point is that the vast majority of PS3/PSP/PSN customers will find something in all of this for them. Some more than others perhaps, but that was inevitable.

Oh, another point. Everyone get's 30 days of PlayStation Plus membership. During that time you'll get a free edition of Qore, as well as several free games and several heavily discounted games as well as access to any Plus exclusive content during that time. Sony has pledged to update the store several times in the first month coming back online, so there may be many more free games to come via Plus and the Store. People need to remember that 30 days of Plus doesn't just mean 30 days to try cloud storage, there are free and discounted games to consider as well.

Not complaining here either just pointing something out, 2 months ago PSN had us vote for some games that became "fan favorites". The downloadable game that won from the PSN exclusives was Dead Nation picked up that and Castle Crashers, that won something else, that week. All I'm going to say is it wasn't on sale that long ago, but it was worth every penny if you ask me. Dont know how many others are in the same boat or even feel the same way I do. For anyone that hasn't played it Dead Nation is great game. I played alot of it while the PSN was down with custom playlist running, cant go wrong with that, especially not with some cannibal corpse. Hah guess I'll grab Infamous just for insurance if anything ever happens to my physical copy.

You shouldn't even have to download them. Just go and "purchase" them, then it will take you to the download screen and you can just exit out of that and that little red bag means its yours. Then you can come download it whenever. I do that with the Plus stuff I don't have the games for so if I get them later I can come back and download it whenever I want.

Good Luck LBP is amazing.

You can even cancel (not start) the download by backing out of the process once you've "bought" the game. Once the game appears in your Download List, it should be available for re-download when you get the new HDD.

I believe that you are correct Fane. once the transaction has gone through and the game is on your download list, you can download it as many times as you need to. Just remember to actively manage your activations of consoles so that if you dispose of a console somehow, deactivate it first so that the game activations are not lost. You generally have 5 activations to work with, sometimes fewer, so you need to be careful not to squander them on a console you're letting go.

That's a good question. I do not know with certainty, but here is how I understand it to work.

Just as you can have up to 5 PS3 systems active on your PSNID at once, you can only activate a game 5 times , or rather, you can have 5 'active' activations of a game at any one time. I think if you deactivate a system that the game is installed on, you get that activation back. But, I could be wrong. I've never had cause for more than 4 activations.

I believe that if you deactivate a PS3 for games with your PSNID, that *may* take care of the activation count. In fact, I think this is the reason that Sony are so sticky about system deactivation.

Oh, if you visit a friend who has a PS3 and create an account using your PSNID on that system and play something, that automatically activates that system on your PSNID, so it will count as an activation, even if you only ever played one time. This is important to remember so that you can remove that activation on that Ps3 when you are finished playing. Otherwise you will end up looking like you have more PS3s than you have.

a new HDD doesnt count as a new ps3. when you deactivate gaming and video features on one ps3 using your account it wont be able to download dlcs and video. it also takes that ps3 out of your 5 ps3s list. your psn id can be tied to 5 ps3s for gaming and 1 for videos. at least thats what the playstation support sent me. i'm still pissed that they cant remove my old ps3 that yellow lighted and SENT IN TO SONY. i mean i couldnt turn it on to deactivate and i sent it back to them. they should know that it needed to be deactivated when they sent me a refurbished one.

John, I've read comments about that from a number of people. I'm not sure why Sony wouldn't deactivate systems that are not sent back when they receive one for a repair and send a replacement instead. I'm gonna guess it's simply one of the cracks things slip through, but Sony will deactivate it if you contact the customer services folks and persist. It shouldn't be too hard since you have indisputable proof that the system was sent to Sony and a replacement was sent back to you.

Well, wouldn't you know it, what a coincidence...my original 60GB launch system decided to Red light today. I'm going to nurse it back for long enough to deactivate it, and then it's off to Sony for some TLC, and no doubt a replacement with a refurb unit. At least I've got a cruddy old 320GB drive that I don't trust, so I don't have to send the good WD unit back with the console...

I may have to take my PS3 down to my sister's place and d/l Wipeout HD Fury, KZ: Liberation and LBPSP. Nah, I wouldn't take advantage of Sony that way. They've provided me with more than enough awesome content that I've willingly paid for.

Unbelievable deal though.
Peace.

they should of instead given us x amount of funds and let us choose what we wanted, instead of offering games 99% of people already have!
shame they did not put joe danger on there, would of been the perfect boos for the game!

It's not the case at all. PS plus expires after 30 days so everything you've gotten through plus will expire with it, unless you subscribe of course. But of these 5 games you have 30 days to download your choice of 2 before that offer expires. The games are yours for life after you download them.

Like I said in a previous post, there will be some people that are just never happy. I cant believe how many people I saw complaining about this package. There argument wast the lack of compensation for a FREE service, it was the lack of compensation for their information being stolen. I think Sony did plenty, first off there are still, as far as I know, no confirmed credit card thefts from this, as well as Sony is giving you $1 million theft protection. People are suggesting that Sony give us brand new games for free, or Netflix for a full year. People just don't understand that though Sony has seemingly an unlimited amount money, it is definitely not unlimited. Just look at how much they spent on rebuilding the network, I think they did more than enough.

You're spot on there. No confirmed card information theft beyond 900 active card details stolen from SOE. Banks and other financial institutions are still confirming that assessment. The only information obtained was names and addresses, DOBs, PSN IDs and email addresses. All of that is available publicly via the Internet on the majority of people in the world if you do some digging. It's not like Social Security numbers were lost, so there's little chance of actual ID theft, and with no apparent card number theft (excepting the 900 already mentioned), there really isn't a great deal of impact on people's information security here. There have been far larger thefts of data including social security information, CC and debit card details and other information from other organizations that have gone nearly un-reported. If I were going to worry, I would worry about those incidents before the PSN attack.

Unfortunately I don't have a PSP so that list is out, and I own every single one of the titles that they are offering for PS3. It is a great deal for people that don't have those titles or only have one.

I think they could have taken the price of the the highest sticker item and lowest sticker item combined them and let people either take that in store credit or take two titles. I don't know, it would have probably been harder to work out that way, but it kind of feels like if you already own all the titles you just have to make due.

Meh, I'm just happy the PSN is back up.

Please bare in mind unless they waive the PSN+ subscription thing where you get it for a month and then anything you download you cannot use if you don't contiue to subscribe.

What I mean is my mate got PSN+ while it was there he got LBP once his subscription ran out he could no longer access the game.

Seeing as they have given it to us as an apology there maybe no need to worry. They may let us be able to use the games after the free month has run out. Unless they are hoping we will re subscribe to PSN+ once everyones tried it for free that is.

Either way it's good of them to offer the stuff they have done even if I do own most or have done in the past I'll d/l something im sure.

Welcome back PSN we missed you :)

The free PS3/PSP games on offer with the welcome Back package - LBP, Infamous, etc.... remain yours forever, they are not the same as the free games you can get through Paystation plus.

With regard to PlayStation Plus, anything you *buy* (even at a discount) with Playstaion Plus remains yours, even after the subscription ends.

Games you download under PlayStation Plus for free remain yours forever, but are only available to play while your subscription is current. If your subscription ends and you don't immediately renew, you lose access to the free games. However if you re-subscribe later, your free content remains yours to play once you re-subscribe.

Regarding anything purchased (even at discount);
From the PlayStation Plus announcement - "PlayStation Plus subscribers will also be given exclusive PlayStation Store discounts each month that are above and beyond the current PSN Store discounts available to everyone. These discounts will range from 20% to 50%, and anything you buy with these is yours to keep and enjoy forever."

Regarding other things like premium avatars, themes or game DLC you get for free;
From the PlayStation Plus announcement - "Each month there will be dynamic themes, premium avatars and premium game elements/add-ons for you to download and many will be exclusive to PlayStation Plus members only. These are yours to keep forever once you have downloaded them."

Sounds pretty nice if you as me, but then I am already a subscriber...

Some people are stupid enough to anonymously thumb down people without giving a reason. In fact it surprises me how many ps3 fanboys/fangirls simply moan about stuff without getting their facts straight. Being a ps3 owner, I read psn blogs, especially now since the network went down, so I already know the rules regarding the free games and the difference between them and those that are given through psn Plus. Simply read the official stuff. It's all clear.

Therein lies the problem parasitic, reading. Most people don't want to take the time to research and learn the facts for themselves, and that goes far outside of just gaming. People want the quick answer that sounds right even if it holds no bearing on the truth of matters. Dress a lie up pretty enough and tell it to people and they will latch on to it even if the facts are completely contrary yet have to be researched to find.

Well, the only one on that list I don't have is KZ:Liberation, so I'll be getting that one.

I'm actually pretty surprised at just how all-out Sony went on this. I figured we'd just get a free month of PS Plus and one free game, but at max we can get 4 free games for life, PS Plus for a month, and a bunch of other stuff. IMO, we didn't need any of this, but its still awesome that Sony cares this much about the consumer (and its public image).
